Shamanic Art Images

As a life long artist who is always looking for inspiration, I was impressed with this collection of images from
the aboriginal people of Australia and New Zealand. In looking at these line drawings, we get a sense of how
they perceive their world and express deep connection to their reality. I was also impressed by the sense of
"sharing" that this generous collection reveals. From a purely mechanical aspect, I believe the images will be
very useful, altho I wished for a few more in color, as well. It is easy to imagine using these images for all the
avenues suggested on the cover.

"The Plight and the Culture of Australian Aborigines with Photos"

"Aborigines of Australia: Illustrated with Photographs", by Olga Hoyt 1969. Lothrop, Lee & Shepard Co., N.Y., ISBN 72-81754. HC128/122 pgs. Gossary 2 pgs. Index 4 pgs. 40 B&W illus./photographs. 9 ½" x 7".

A fine book, an adult level treatise encompassing 15 chapters describing the life of Australian Aborigines who first inhabited Australia more than 25,000 years ago, Peoples who when "discovered" by the Dutch in 1623 and thence again by Capt. James Cook in 1770 who then took possession of their lands in the name of Gt. Britain, were looked upon as "Barbarians" and "Unfriendly Natives" and described as "still living in the Stone Age".

The author does a worthy job in describing their original living status of numbering 300,000 and their decimation to some 10%, and having gone from having all of Australia as "their Land", they eventually were given 353 Governmental "Reserves" on 190,000,000 Sq. Miles. More recently, c. 1950, provisions were made for their medical care, education, food, lodging and some work opportunities with some pay in various trades or industries as mines, ranching and agriculture. In general they are better off than 50 years ago when embittered killings on both sides were rampant as both sides sought to keep their lands. In all likelihood, the Aborigines will be assimilated as a Race despite attempts to maintain full-blooded Tribal status on the Reservations. In many ways this reflects the same general plight as American (Native) Indians.

Quite importantly, the author addresses the cultural life of the Aborigines, their religions, "the Dreaming Time", Societal Structures, Childhood and Adolescence/Puberty of Girls and Initiation of Boys from Childhood into Warriors via triad of initiation rituals completed as they became 20-something. Excellent sections are given on gaming & herbal gatherings, tools as spears and boomerangs, marriage-birth-deaths, music-song-dance-art, and an exposition of what the future brings to these Aborigines - described as a discrete race of moderately tall, proudly erect, muscular black-skinned peoples with their discrete numerous dialects and totemism. The illustrations are superb. The movie "Australia" makes the reading of this book most timely for those wishing to learn more of these Peoples.

I just recently returned from Australia and I visited the Aboriginal Cultural Center. I purchased the book at the center and found it to be a good introduction to the culture and the poetry. Although the book is presently out of print, it is well worth the effort to secure a copy. I am presently searching for additional copies for gifts. The photography and the poetry are quite exceptional.

Outstanding book, a hidden gem.

If you had a hypothesis that the quality, usefulness, and, most importantly, ability to contribute to profitable trading, of trading-related books are inversely related to their price, this book would be strong evidence in your favour. At the risk of over-selling this book, it is simply outstanding. By all means spend a lot of money on some of the better known (better marketed?) trading-related books out there, but this book provides value far beyond its price tag.

Most books that purport to give instruction on trading techniques (trend assessment, entry and exit points, and so forth) usually include a section at the end on "money management", "risk management", or some such topic. This book turns that practice on its head; the first 51 pages, headed "Philosophy" are devoted to understanding how to become profitable, by finding the common ground among profitable traders, then explaining expectancy and how to use it to create a profitable trading approach. This section of the book alone is incredible and will change how you think about your trading.

Part two of the book (the next 100 pages) gives practical advice on applying the philosophy, with sections on defining the trend, price-patterns trading, using confluence to lower risk and increase the probability of a profitable trade, using micro-patterns, and so on.

Part three of the book applies the information in Parts 1 and 2 to real examples.

One thing I do not understand is why the author titled the book "...for Australian Stocks". The philosophy and the practical applications of the analysis are all relevant to any exchange-traded financial instrument. All of the examples are Australian stocks, so maybe thats why. On another note, I don't use all of his analytical techniques, there is enough in this book to pick and choose the techniques that suit. I believe that the philosophy as discussed in part 1 of the book, though, is non-negotiable and should be used by all traders.

Classic adventure tale

This book details the life of a shipping investor shipwrecked off Australia's coast in the early 1800s. He struggles with loneliness, develops relations with indigenous peoples, weds an aboriginal wife, has children -- and all the while tries to find his way back to "civilization."

de Rougemont uses clear, inviting, inventive language to describe his triumphs and losses. No hidden meanings or complicated subtexts here; just a ripping good yarn based on this fellow's endless adventures. And no analytical coldness or floods of facts, either -- this guy lived fully and completely on every level and conveyed his triumphs and disappointments stoutly and directly.

Fine verse

Review Date: 1999-06-17
It is crazy that this book should be out of print. What are publishers thinking of? The verses are a delight, though they become increasingly tragic as the book progresses - "The Sea Bell" is a devastating account of something like clinical depression, yet like many of the rest it has a strange beauty. On the surface much is easy-to-read verse, but often has subtle allusions to deep matters. Many links with "The Lord of the Rings" for those who know where to look, and, I think, an unusually personal account of Tolkien's own struggles to find beauty, wonder and enchantment in the bleak modern world - it is only coincidence that "The Sea Bell" is the only one of his major works for publication written in the first person?

A Good Introduction to Percy the Park Keeper and His Animal Friends
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-01
The title says it all. Percy the park keeper wakes up one day in the aftermath of a heavy storm. His animal friends are displaced. He helps them find a new one. The story is simple and pretty straight-forward. Its execution however is heart-warming and well-paced. Living in the Philippines, you do see the damage and destruction caused by typhoons. This book will certainly help children understand the effects of natural disasters. Furthermore, it presents the young readers of what to do in these cases as an individual and as a community.

This book is recommended to all.
