It has been eighteen months since Ed Brown the "Stiletto Killer" of nine women was caught after he kidnapped and tortured Canadian model Makedde Vanderwall. All the women he butchered wore stiletto heels like his mother used to before the incident he caused that put her in a wheelchair because she no longer had legs. Mak is leaving Canada and heading to Australia to be the star witness for the prosecution since she was the only victim who survived Ed's torture.

She testifies on the first day of the trial but in the middle of her testimony Ed Brown confesses that he is guilty on all counts of murder. In exchange for certain privileges, he leads the police to a place where he says a victim lies that the police never discovered. It is a trap and when an incendiary device explodes, Ed escapes. Makedde is scared out of her wits because she knows Brown is fixated on her. She hops on the first plane to Hong Kong for a modeling assignment. Ed, with the help of the prison guard he befriended, follows her and the two come together in a confrontation in which only one of them is left standing.

Tara Moss is Australia's answer to Patricia Cornwell. Her characters are multi-faceted and run the gamut from pure good to pure evil. The scenes in which Ed Brown is the prime player are the most interesting because readers get to see how his twisted mind thinks. Makedde is a beautiful amazon with a high IQ who runs from danger that makes her even more believable than the rest of the characters because she knows Ed Brown is too dangerous for her to be on the same continent with. This is a fascinating crime thriller that contains a feeling of ever spreading danger.

My 21 month old son loves this book - he has me read it again and again - then reads it to himself. Little text, rich pictures. The pictures are full of subtle humor that parents can enjoy - for example the baby brother banging the pots and pans - then you notice that he has also placed some of the cookware in the trashbin...Oh so real!

i stumbled upon CTM in a big bookstore in my homecity. since then it has been a constant companion as i design and facilitate workshops, from a single session to a monthlong comprehensive training. this book gave face and name to several needs i felt as a trainor in the recent years. i've always been a self-directed learner and Creating Training Miracles proved to be a very effective tool and companion. as one discovers the gems in it, there is always the excitement to try things as soon as one gets the chance. fear is transformed to excitement, uncertainty is transformed to adventure and expectation. concepts and principles are clearly presented in simple and straightforward manner through highlights and visuals. i won't ever part with this book. it is similar to how one relates to one's Bible. it presents a new learning everytime one moves a step forward in his training and facilitation experience. Mr. Rylatt with Mr. Lohan did a great job, Congratulations!

The Cultivation Of Whiteness: Science, Health, And Racial Destiny in Australia is a region-specific, college-level collection which is strong in anthropology and which Australian or multicultural studies will find to be a revealing survey of science and racial destiny. In 19th century Australia doctors were the main commentators on race and biological differences - this examines their perceptions of racism and differences between whites and other cultures, using the foundation of science and medicine as a basis for surveying and even experimenting upon other peoples. An eye-opening set of revelations.

I loved the movie, and I loved the book. The book built on the movie, adding parts and info on scenes and the characters, explaining technical info, and more. It went more into the movie, adding on what happened at Mount Baker in the 1970's (Mentioned in movie, but not explained), and going into other Cascade Volcanoes (Rainier, St. Helens, Baker, Crater Lake). Anyone who loves disaster stories, volcanoes, or Washington State should read this book.

This is the first book by Colvin Jeffreys I have read, and I will certainly read more by him. I found Dark Ghosts of the Night at random while searching the web and once I started I couldn't put it down. Eventually I ordered it direct and then re read it all again. What can I say ? BRILLIANT ! I first read this in 2 sessions, and the only reason I stopped the first session was because I had to go to work. The book is fast paced, the characters are well developed and the suspense of what is actually going on is great. Unlike other books I have read, I could not have guessed the ending of this one.

I can't say that I found this a particularly horrible scary story, more captivating and compelling, and a wonderful insight into Australia. For pace and action, if anybody asks me for a recommendation this is certainly top of my list. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did

One of the best yarns I have ever read!

I AM A FAN OF COLVIN JEFFREYS FOR LIFE! This book is real bad! I am definitely going to OZ! What a great story! Fell in love with Louisse; Jake, you're real bad! This book had me captivated from start to finish. Ever heard the term 'cattle duffing'? That means rustling to us mavericks over here. Would you believe it's a major criminal industry in Australia today? This book will open your eyes, entertain, teach, stimulate, and just pure thrill you from start to finish. Where have you been hiding this guy? Give me more!

I read this book a year ago and found it such a compelling but chilling read. If it were not so painstakingly researched and the history it reports were not so recent and about a time I remember well, it would be possible to read it as a dramatic nail biting political thriller. The characters that as Australians we know so well are depicted so vividly, their actions so self serving and callous. Given the current political climate in Australia and around the world this book should be compulsory reading for all those who wish to not live through another term of the radical right wing conservatives. Frighteningly history is repeating itself with another election soon, the same campaign tactics exploiting the politics of fear and greed are being played out in the Australian media, fueled by now well seasoned politicians and business interests.

Profound contribution to Australian journalism

This is a book for the ages. In closely recounting the Tampa crisis, the "children overboard" affair, and the whole sordid mess of Operation Relex and its role in the 2001 federal election, Marr and Wilkinson have made a profound contribution to Australian political journalism, and to documenting the shameful record of Howard, his government of moral degenerates, and their distressingly inept Opposition. What might surprise some of Marr's critics is that this book shows an admirable lack of editorializing: he and Wilkinson don't need to seize the moral high ground and lecture the reader. The facts just speak for themselves. They make abundantly clear Howard's shameless tactics (such as 'dog whistle' and 'wedge' politics), the complete lack of independence in the Australian public service, and the contemptible weakness of military officers who refused to speak up with 'frank and fearless' advice even when they knew the government was lying. What the book also demonstrates is the terrifying gap between daily media reports and the reality of what goes on - and this in a country with a reasonably free press. To be fair, Marr and Wilkinson had the luxury of access to ministers, the detailed records of naval vessels, the reports of various inquiries and more than a year to write their book. But it does make you wonder: are most journalists just lazy? Or does the "news" move at such speed these days and get presented in such a format that it disallows the kind of close analysis a democratic citizenry deserves? Thankfully, people like Marr and Wilkinson are around to reassemble all the pieces for us - their role is essential in a country which seems to be suffering from collective A.D.D. when it comes to Howard and his kind. I was particularly impressed by the authors' meticulous research and referencing, helpful glossary and thorough indexing. This is an important book about a very important issue. I encourage all Australians to read it, and any potential illegal immigrants - sorry, foreign nationals (the Liberal's rhetoric is catching) - who might be interested in understanding the mockery of enlightened democracy that is Australian politics today.

'Death in Childbirth: An International Study of Maternal Care and Maternal Mortality 1800-1950' is a researched and detailed account of the risks of childbirth over the past two hundred years. It documents the changes which have taken place over that period of time and the reasons for the improvement in maternity care.

What I have learned from the book is that the teaching I received in midwifery was, from its criterion, very good but I wish that I had the knowledge derived from 'Death in Childbirth' while I was still actively engaged in obstetrics and teaching general practice.

Much of the medical profession is reasonably well-versed nowadays on the subject of midwifery but some misconceptions heard by me have been rectified by the information given.

I would recommend that 'Death in Childbirth' be required reading by medical students, doctors interested in obstetrics, and by ministers of health.

A monumental study.

This is an utterly stunning work that should be required reading for all midwives, obstetrician-gynecologists, feminists of all persuasions--anybody involved in the health care of women. Not only does it take the wind out of the sails of those who believe childbirth is without consequences (part of the natural history of natural childbirth is maternal death), but it demonstrates how the industrialized world dropped its maternal mortality ratios nearly 100-fold in a century. This has important policy implications for international health work--providing that the international community can persuade developing countries to take women's health care needs seriously. Highly recommended.
