Story had lots of potential, but delivery fell flatReview Date: 2007-09-13
- The heroine behaved like a shrew towards the hero for 4/5 of the book. While I appreciate feisty and independent-thinking heroines, this one was unnecessarily rude, bitter, and sometimes even downright cruel to a man far too deserving for her.
- The amount of tension in the novel between the hero and heroine (mainly caused only by the heroine herself for ridiculous plot-contrived reasons) really took away from the romance of why I even read romances to begin with.
- The plot was very predictable, there was really no "villain" or secondary characters to speak of, and I doubt I will remember much about this story after a couple weeks of reading several more romances.
All in all, this book gets 3/5 stars for me for its original storyline, background, and the fact that it was well-written. Minus 2/5 stars for the unnecessarily shrewish behavior of the heroine, and the predictability in the deliverance of the promising storyline. I would recommend it only if you merely want to pass your time -- you won't find a ground-breaking, heart-wrenching story here, but I suggest checking your local library or buying a cheap used copy.

More than one stud in this storyReview Date: 2002-12-28
She ends up bidding more than she can handle and to get the rest of the money she goes to London to find a husband. What she doesn't count on is an embarrassment from her past showing up as well as her neighbor Tye. What ensues is a great romance story!
Mary wins The Studand a horse tooReview Date: 2004-04-13
Tye is just as determined to win, because it would secure his stable's future as well. And he believes he has a good shot with the amount of money he's willing to bid. In the end, Mary outbids him but he's suspicious, because he knows there's no way she could own that kind of capital. Mary's winning bid is well beyond her means, but she makes up a fictitious, wealthy fiancé, and then convinces the seller she needs a little time to make her payment. The independent Mary, who never intended to settle down, sets out for London and the marriage mart to snag herself a rich husband. Tye discovers where she's gone, and follows with the intention to foil any possibility of her paying for the horse.
Their complicated history resurfaces, as well as their desire for each other, which of course has always been there in the form of a battle of wills. Together, they may discover the real prize isn't the horse, but their love for each other.
I've read three or four novels by Maxwell, and this is my favorite so far. I enjoy romances that involve the battle of wills, which is done well here. Although, I did think Mary's obstinance over her independence did go on a little too long, but that's only a minor issue. Even though there's not much new here for a romance story, I still found it refreshing and the witty dialogue probably had a lot to do with that. Mary and Tye were both headstrong characters and well matched for each other. There's nothing heavy-duty about this story, it's a nice light, recommended read.
Great -hate you, but I really love you romanceReview Date: 2006-08-02
Great romance. I love fiesty females and Mary takes the cake! She causes scandals just by breathing, a real tough cookie that doesn't take it from anybody -including Tye. He's just that man to lasoe this filly in. One of my favorite Maxwells. If you liked Falling in Love Again and You and Only You, you'll like this one too.

Logical and Simple MethodsReview Date: 2008-08-30
A ridiculous critique of the incomparable Beyer speed figuresReview Date: 2008-07-26
First of all, under the Beyer method, times are adjusted so times for different lengths, different tracks, and different track conditions can be compared. Beyer only translated the time to a figure to make it easier to compare, and the figure scale was arbitrarily chosen. For example, a time of 1:12 for six furlongs on an average track condition will get a Beyer figure of 94. There is nothing special about the 94. Beyer could just have easily given it a 114 or a 74 and adjusted the rest of the speed rating chart accordingly.
But this book, which derives their speed figure in an entirely separate way, maintains that the Beyer figure for a particular race is inaccurate if it isn't the same as theirs. As if a methodology with an arbitrarily chosen scale should have its figures match up with a seperate methodology. This is illogical and off the wall.
What's worse, is that this book's figures use, and are an offshoot of, the Daily Racing Form's crude speed figure, which makes them not only incompatible for comparison with Beyer's, but it makes them practically useless as well.
AMAZING!!!!!!!!!Review Date: 2008-07-12
This author is really Joseph J. Tuttle, and as per usual (with his standard M/O of only writing around 100+ page booklets) he is leaving me wanting more. His writing style is a bit like a punch in the face! He's simply telling us (his readers) exactly how he sees things. That, I do appreciate. He recently wrote a book called "Eight-N-One: The complete works (pseudonyms included) by Joseph J. Tuttle". I think that book is probably the best value out of all of his books, and not solely based on the price. I've purchased almost all of his booklets and I've had great results. But, I truly believe that if he were to placate his readership, just a tad; he'd sell a lot more of his books. He's is honestly borderline arrogant in his writing mannerisms. In closing out this review, I must say that his accessibility is by far his greatest asset. How many times have you had an I-M conversation with Andrew Beyer, or Dave Litfin? Or better still an actual phone conversation? He's great in that regard. He always puts his email address in his books. And, I think he actually likes people such as myself that constantly bombard him with questions. That's his best trait!!!
p.s. To R. Malloy and Rod Allison,(Men that wrote poor reviews of "Speed, Speed, and Nothing but Speed)
I had a sweet score today (Aug. 30th 2008) on a 5-1 shot in the 1st @ Toga, because of Joseph J. Tuttle's progression/regression system. 200 to win, and a 20 dollar double wheel. Since buying his first book....."The Ultimate Guide to Beating Baseball", I'm up well over 9k in about 4 or 5 months! This has been the best stretch of gambling on horses or games, in my entire young life.
I GO BY RESULTS AND SO SHOULD ALL OF YOU! THE MAN IN A WORD, IS SIMPLY A "WINNER"! Now, so am I.

I think this excerpt is all that needs to be said.Review Date: 2008-10-20
".....Using a hypothetical Q & A survey; you should be able define yourself as a horseplayer.
Q. Do you consider yourself an avid horseplayer?
A. If you answered yes, then, you probably go to the track three times a week or more, and/or bet from home on almost a nightly basis. That is my definition of an avid horseplayer. If you are a beginner (but you aspire to become an astute and avid horseplayer); then this book will most certainly help you as well.
Q. Can you afford to allocate a minimum $200 a week (or weekend) towards future horse playing endeavors?
A. In the event that your answer is no you may want to use this book for firewood. Because, in order to properly utilize my system, it takes a minimum $200 investment (per 10 races wagered on), and nothing less will suffice.
Q. Do you know how to properly calculate odds?
A. If your answer is no, it will soon be an emphatic yes! I will teach this later on, and other inventive ways of determining value. Because, knowing how to properly calculate the odds; is the first step to putting the odds in your favor, quite obviously.
Q. How lofty are your goals?
A. If you aspire to become a professional (as I currently consider myself one), then this book will certainly help
you achieve that goal. Assuming, that you have the adequate initial capital backing, you'll be fine. If you're goal is just to start winning more often; because you're just completely incensed with continually losing, then, this book will certainly help you achieve that goal.
Actual Q & A from a recent Webinar
Q. I only get to the track once a week, and I only bring $100.00 with me, every time, is this enough to implement your system successfully?
A. If you're only planning to stay for 5 races, then absolutely. The system is based on the average 10 race card, and allocating a bare minimum $20.00 per bet, per race.
Q. The economy is quite bad right now, and I'm looking for a way to subsidize my income. Do you feel betting on horseracing can become a stock market type of outlet?
A. Absolutely. In utilizing my system; you will learn the value of highly underrated and even disregarded wagering strategies and techniques. My background happens to be in the world of finance, and I employ a lot of hedging strategies, on a daily basis.
Q. How complicated is your system?
A. In my humble opinion, not very. And I might add, that once you learn it, and you're dedicated to it; your level of consistently picking winners will increase dramatically.
Q. I noticed you just used the phrasing "staying dedicated to it", what exactly do you mean?
A. As is the case in 99% of all systemic theorems and/or endeavors; it takes a high degree of commitment to achieve any real success. It is a contention of mine that without being "fully-committed" my system will not work for you.
Q. What guarantees, if any, can you promise?
A. There are no guarantees in life, and especially in any type of business dealings. Furthermore, if you have a high degree of discipline; I believe that my system will work wonders for you. And, that is the only "guarantee" that I can give.
I sincerely hope that this chapter has helped you to make a few determinations (about yourself as a horseplayer), and it is also my hope that some of these actual or hypothetical questions might have given you a better perspective from which to judge oneself."
The idea of a Q & A is something that I'd like to start doing with my books. To see my complete portfolio of books selling here on Amazon.com; just type in my full name (Joseph J Tuttle).

Only 4-stars because I thought it was a little shortReview Date: 2008-10-19
It's a highly entertaining read, but a bit too short to give it more than a 4-star rating. Just being honest. The writer does pack a major punch for 92.5 pages...if memory serves me correctly; my PDF version read it at almost 20k in words.
