I found it difficult to get into this book....too slow for my taste.
This was my fourth book by this author, and my least favorite.
Try "Neverland" or "You come when I call you"

Creepy story not for the faint of heart

Breeder is the first book by Douglas Clegg that I have read and Clegg certainly lived up to his status as one of the best horror authors out there. The story reminds you a bit of Rosemary's Baby meets It's Alive but the character development is strong and the work stands on it's own merit. It took a while for this story to get really scary but once it does, it doesn't slow down until the end. There are some descriptions of violence in this book that are really disturbing and graphic but that's all part of the "horror" in my book. Just be prepared when the hammer comes into play. Overall, a good, quick, read. I'll continue to check out other works by Mr. Clegg

This was a messed up little story! Interesting characters with real conflicts, people trying to find themselves... and of course
cannibalism, nasty ghosts, and even a demon fetus! A very fast read with plenty of scares and violent happenings. HOUNFOUR...

Clegg's best....I'm sad to say!

BREEDER was the first Douglas Clegg novel I ever picked up and after reading some of his other (more recent) books I thought I'd drop in a few lines.
I must say however that, after BREEDER, mister Clegg seems to have gone a little downhill. His later novels like YOU COME WHEN I CALL YOU and HALLOWE'EN MAN were interesting, but a little bit to intellectual and literary for my tastes. That's why I think his second book BREEDER is (still) his best.

BREEDER is about this young couple who move into their new Washington home and, with a baby on the way, start looking towards a happy future. There is none however when all kinds of 'skeletons' start popping up, and with frightening results.
There's this really frightening baglady cowering through the neighbourhood, their landlady isn't all she says to be and soon the couple are involved with the resurrection of a powerful, and evil voodoo priest (but then again, aren't all voodoo priests evil?).
Without giving too much of the plot away I can say there's chills and twists aplenty here and I must warn the weak of stomach since there are some pretty disturbing scenes involving foetusses and childmurder.

I remember reading FANGORIA in the early nineties and at the time they were making Clegg out to be a big promise for the future. Giving his popularity he certainly has made good on that, I just think it's a pity he strayed away from the writing style that made books like BREEDER such winners.

A truly freaky horror novel

This is the first novel by Douglas Clegg that I have read, and it's, well, great. It's about a young couple fresh out of law school who move into an old townhouse in the D.C. suburbs. They slowly discover that the house has an evil past, and that their downstairs tenant is not who she seems to be. Lots of gore, like most good horror novels, after all, what could be more horrifying than a man driven so far into madness that he bashes himself to death with a hammer? But it also has a lot of really non-gory scares, too, for instance, the children in the park. Read it if you're a horror novel buff. It's much better than I expected.

I love Diana Palmer, because her old books hooked me. Now it seems she makes mistakes about the rich rancher Mack Killain, asking a underpaid school teacher Natalie Brock if she is slumming,(pg120 he calls her a penniless two-timing orphan) when she comes to his ranch. She is the only one
Mack had few friends who could pronounce Mckinsey Donald Killain, I don't understand what is so hard about pronouncing that name.
Mack had an accident that blinded him when he was gored by a bull.
On page 9 Natalie is living with her aunt Mrs. Barnes when Mack is hurt, on page 98 she is living at an orphanage. Neither likes her tending to Mack.
Natalie lived with her aunt in a one bedroom home on the outskirts of Mack's ranch. Where she slept when her aunt was alive is a mystery.
But Mack takes her to bedroom in her aunt's house. (the one with only one bed room pg 27) pg 171 Afterward there was a mad dash out the door-done leisurely to accommodate Natalie's still slow pace. ???
I still say Ms Palmer wrote better books before she went to college to learn to write.
Anyway I will continue to read her books so I guess I need to quit belly-aching.

Terrific Diana Palmer book

I have read Diana Palmer books for about 12 years and even collect them. Overall I like her books b/c I'm familar with her storyline formula, it makes for a comfortable reading experience.
The Wedding In White is one that I like to read again periodically. In fact I reread it just a couple days ago! Her books normally focus on a very young, timid virgin and a much older man (12-15 year age difference in most cases) and the man is almost always verbally cruel to the lady. But this book is a little different. There is only a six year age difference between Natalie and Mack (22 vs. 28 - same decade YEAH!). Natalie is a strong female who knows how to stand her ground with Mack and shows him that he doesn't scare her. His meanness is mostly based on a lie he was told. Of course, he should still know Natalie well enough to see the truth but he is also fighting his feelings for her which makes it easier for him to just push her away. When something terrible happens Mack realizes what his life would be like without Natalie and his heartache makes you forgive him for his cruelty.
For me Diana Palmer books are very similar to each other in plot/style but when you think about it many romance authors have a particular style used in their writings. Some of her more recent books have been a little disappointing to me (for instance Outlaw and Boss Man) but I like this one b/c it is very down to earth without all the "hokeyness". By the end you realize that Natalie and Mack are really made for each other and their love is very strong.

Description from the back of book:

Sweet, gentle schoolteacher Natalie Brock's life changed forever when handsome rancher Mack Killian branded her with his masterful kisses and gave her a tantalizing taste of true passion. Ever since that first sensual awakening, Natalie knew Mack was the only man for her. Trouble was, the rough-edged loner had sworn off marriage - especially to an innocent rose like her - and told her so on more than one occasion. But Natalie wasn't giving up. For Mack had taught her the best was worth fighting for ... and Natalie would not settle for anything less than all his love!

* This was my first Diana Palmer book & I really enjoyed it. This book will hook you right from the start. It gave me many laughs & a few tears along the way. I did find some of the phrase & expressions to be very repetitive. She used some of the sayings over & over again. That's my only real complaint. I would certainly recommend this book.

Annie On Dogs is a compilation of magazine articles written by Anne Rogers Clark...one of the most respected judges in the dog world. When Mrs Clark spoke, you listened!! And learned!! Her death in December 2006 was a blow to all who knew her and she may never be "replaced".

If you wish to learn how to conduct yourself in various dog show situations (some very funny), then this is the book for you. If you wish to understand what goes on behind the glamour of televised dog shows, wish to understand things about those crazy people in the ring and just WHY that judge chose that dog, get this book and start reading at the beginning. The wisdom on the pages will astound you.

I was fortunate enough to both show under and steward for Mrs Clark and base my own judging format on her example. Read Mrs Clark's book and you'll never regret it!!! A 5 star rating is not high enough. Make this a 20!!!!!!

Scottish kennel owner, John Cunningham, his spouse Beth, and their new neighbor Ben Garnet go hunting together. However, John's enjoyment turns to anger when he realizes that the unprincipled Ben has set up a mating between his canine and John's champion dog. Later, the two men argue in public over the pedigree of the puppies as John refuses to sign the papers acknowledging the valuable bloodlines. However, the world is just starting to turn ugly for John. Ben is found half-dead on a roadside near John's house. Everyone knows John's animosity towards the victim and concludes that he is the culprit. Before the police accuse him of attempted murder and to regain his tarnished reputation, John begins his own investigation even if it means confronting a brutal individual.

BLOODLINES is a great Scottish who-done-it that showcases the immense talent of author Gerald Hammond. Like the other stories in this fabulous series, the story line is brisk and the mystery remains mysterious until the end. The characters are all wonderfully developed, especially the feuding canine owners. BLOODLINES is a top pedigree of a novel that brings Scotland to life.

Thought this was a well written short story. Would like to see more about the Breeders. Shayna, taken from Earth and brought to Eliscean Prime to be a Breeder is bought by Tyrone, the High Regent. The Queen, who had years before, stolen Shayna's Father to be a breeder, and was rejected by him, does not want Tyrone to Mate with Shayna and sets out to have her taken to the dragon pits to be executed. But Tyrone and Shayna are Calling Mates, and if she dies Tyrone will change to a dragon, who will destroy anything and anyone in his path. I would like to see more about this story line. It would make a great series.

It was really short, more appropriate for an anthology,

Considering it was large type and just a little over an hour's read, it wasn't too bad. But let's face it, you can only pack so much action and character development into a story that's only 102 actual pages long. Personally, I was disappointed.

I used to think that vampires were the most sensual, dark characters around. But dragons give them a run for their money. Together, its the most exciting, sensual and steamy time when reading Breeders. Vampires and dragons, who could ask for much more. This author gives it all and Breeders shouldn't be a book to be missed. I hope this author is writing more dragons, I'm hooked!

Jay Privman, Breeders' Cup: Thoroughbred Racing's Championship Day (Triumph, 2000)

Gorgeous photography is the focus of this monstrous coffee-table book; Jay Privman's commentary is interesting, but sometimes a minor drawback (there's some repetition, and a bit of fact-fudging when it comes to the infamous 1998 Breeders' Cup Classic, though Privman redeems himself somewhat when he at least refers to Frankie Deottri's ride on Swain as "ill-considered" when discussing Daylami). Few Breeders' Cup winners are not given at least some space, and a number of them are given multi-page spreads. If you're a Breeders' Cup fan, this one's a must. ****

I received my long-awaited copy of this book, and I must say I enjoy it very much. This is a coffee table book with numerous beautiful color photographs of the races from the Breeders' Cup inaugural (1984) to the present. The triumphs, the tragedies (for example, Go For Wand's breakdown and death in the 1990 Breeders' Cup Distaff), and the upsets (such as Arcangues' longshot win in the 1993 Classic) are beautifully chronicled in this book.

The only thing preventing me from giving it five stars was that it was a little bit on the skimpy side with regard to the commentary. I always enjoy good commentary as well as beautiful pictures in any oversized book. It is still a worthwhile purchase, however.

A Gardener Touched With Genius: The Life of Luther Burbank

This book is a very readable and well-researched biography of Luther Burbank. Dreyer outlines the main events of Burbank's life, from his family ancestry in Massachusetts, his early interest in plants, to his move to California and successful career as a plant breeder. Dreyer also discusses how Burbank's reputation was built and some of the controversies surrounding his work. Historical facts are well documented with endnotes. There is also an index.

I found this book to be an excellent introduction to the life and work of Luther Burbank. Dreyer discusses some of the influences on Burbank's life. He also provides much historical background to put Burbank's work into context. It was fascinating to read, for instance, how much Burbank was influenced by Darwin's work, and how he rejected Mendelian genetics yet developed an intuitive sense of how traits were passed from generation to generation. Dreyer's discussion of the importance of Burbank's genetic discoveries was particularly interesting, especially when juxtaposed with George Shull's descriptions of Burbank's less than meticulous documentation of his methodology. Overall, the book provides a well-rounded overview of the life of one of the leading horticulturalists of the 19th century.

In recent move for consilience of the sciences, I found myself in search of "A Gardener Touched with Genius: the Life of Luther Burback". He has made tremendous changes in American and international fruit and vegetable variety and acceptance. As physician I must say this improves our nutritional choices. I was thrilled to see the photograph of Luther Burbank together with Henry Ford and with Hugo de Vries in California. Hugo de Vries of the University of Leiden, in the Netherlands brought to light the writings of Gregor Mendel, furthered the genetic research, and wrote on Mutation theory in 1910. The life of Luther Burbank is good reading and will encourage future scientists to reach out and ask questions.

Even-handed definitive biography of Luther Burbank.

The "revised edition" (1985) is almost a completely new version of the first edition. Peter Dreyer has done remarkable work interviewing primary sources and unearthing new material. In Dreyer's telling of the life of Luther Burbank, the great American horticulturalist, it seems that no stone, no document, no illuminating background material is ignored. This is Luther Burbank, warts and all. The flavor and sense of this complicated man come across vividly, and the result is we see Burbank in all his paradoxical dimensions: successful plant-breeder who had two fruitless marriages; public image as sage and saint but seen close-up by some as a cold, defensive person; a man who could display profound modesty then sudden blatant self-praise. In this biography there arises a sense that he was a man way ahead of his time, Luther Burbank as the Patron Saint of the New Age.

As a professional women, I think women should do whatever makes them happy as long as they can afford to financially support their choice.
But please, This is not God's work, this is Fu**ing and getting knocked up.
I personally feel the smarter you are, the less kids you will chose to have. I have never desired children and cannot stand to be in the presence of other women that do. Strangely enough, women today seem to be the worst mothers ever. The kids today are so ill bred, no wonder there are so many of us happily childfree out there.
And the women are obnoxious, entitlement seeking, fat, and loud. NO wonder your husbands are screwing around on you from day 1.....
think about how happy you and your spouse would be without any damn kids, I know we are.

I can't get over the guilt or whining of some of the soccer moms. The majority of the parenting books cater to YOU! This book was a refreshing anthology of different mamas, different breeders. I usually buy this book and _Mothers Who Think_ for my pregnant friends under about 35. I think this book speaks to various people and not just the mini-van crowd, who have shelves of books to choose from in any bookstore!

I guess being unprepared for having kids makes you hip.

I can't say that some of the essays weren't well-written, because they were. My problem was the content. I'm not Mrs. Brady by a long shot, I thought I was forward-thinking, a feminist, a hip-mama, but apparently, if you want to stick to the confines of this collection, if you aren't on welfare, a single-mom, or a teenager, in an alternative relationship or all of the above, you aren't from the "New Generation of Mothers". Personally, that's okay with me. I'll just go on being a good mother with a secret punk rock past & realise that by having planned out my pregnancy with my husband when we could afford it that I'm just one of those supposed-SUV driving soccer moms that all the other parenting books cater to. Shame on Ariel Gore for being so narrow-minded in her view of the new generation of mothers. Shame on these supposive feminists for being irresponisble in their breeding & then claiming it a victory for feminism.

Pardon the cliche, but big waste of trees

I would give this zero stars given the chance. First, the title is very misleading. These are not essays by "the new generation of mothers," but rather teen, welfare and wanna-be hippie moms. These flighty, immature, irresponsible writers do NOT represent my generation. (I am 30.) Just take a glimpse at the biographies in the back before you decide to read this drivel. One author is described as a "second generation welfare mama." Now there's a source of pride. These essays include the story of a teenage birth mother who led a potential adoptive couple to believe she was going to give them her baby, then changed her mind after the baby was born, as well as the story of a woman who aborted her baby after she decided to let her body be a pawn to the patriarchy. I am paraphrasing, but trust me, the actual language is even more ridiculous. There are a couple of semi-decent essays here, but it's not worth wading through the rest to find them.
