still one of the best books available, on small craft handling.
--- would prefer the older edition , as it was more portable !
and much of the new material will be dated before the year is out!
---this is a volumne at once , serious , and readable,
many an old trick , well preserved , well presented make it quite useful for nearly all navigational tasks,
did remark , a lot of typos , and was surprised , but then this is the cyber era !? so it goes !? --- a real tool !, however!

A MUST FOR NEW BOATERS AND A GOOD REFERENCE FOR ALL

I just replaced my 54th edition with the 64th. Much of it is the same but much has also changed in the past 16 years. If you are new to boating this book might literally save your life. If you're a seasoned skipper you'll find yourself using it for a reference more often than you'd imagine. Covers every thing you need to know for boating in either sail or power. This book is "the Boater's Bible". If for no other reason than learning the "rules of the waterway" Chapman's is worth it's weight in gold.

CHAPMAN'S PILOTING AND SEAMANSHIP is one of the half-dozen or so "essential" technical texts that any sailor should own. Coming into it's 65th edition in September 2006, CHAPMAN'S is the only book that offers serious competition to THE ANNAPOLIS BOOK OF SEAMANSHIP as an overall guide to sailing fundamentals.

Unlike Rousmaniere's book however, CHAPMAN'S is just as applicable to power boating, and because it is updated much more frequently, it's information on changeable topics such as boating regulations and new technologies, among others, is far more current---CHAPMAN'S is in its 65th incarnation, ANNAPOLIS in its seven-year-old third version (Where's the Fourth Edition?).

Did I say "competition"? Actually, the two volumes complement each other, and both are absolutely crucial for the serious skipper.

Direct Marketing Powerful But Often Underused By Many Businesses

This is a fantastic book to any business person who wants to improve their bottom line and make their advertising and marketing more measureable and accountable. Bly thoroughly covers every direct marketing medium: print, radio, tv, telemarketing and the Internet. And he shows the key differences of selling to the general consumer versuses selling to other businesses. He succinctly explains how to use direct marketing for selling services, information products, fundraising and lead generation. I especially like Chapter 5, which is all about how to measure and monitor your results so you know what's working and what isn't. I've consulted this book numerous times when creating my own promotions, especially the sections on postcards and sales letters. It's a must-have book that should be on the shelf of every business person, whether you're an experienced direct marketer or a complete newbie.

I thought this was a good reference guide that outlines the basics of direct mail as well as defines a lot of the buzzwords I was always hearing. I think the most valuable part was it gave me a place to start in learning how to design direct mail peices and gave me several tips and good ideas on what to do and what not to do. Now I know what direction I need to start focusing on. I really found the book helpful!

Whether you are new to DM or a 10 year veteran, Bob Bly's Complete Idiot's Guide to DM is the right resource for you. This book cuts to the chase by presenting simple, easy to understand topics. And, it is very comprehensive. If you are a novice or a seasoned professional in need of an update, I highly recommend this book.

Robert Bly does it again in this excellent, easy-to-read book. I read it over one weekend and couldn't put it down. The language is simple, direct and honest. Examples are practical and compelling. For me, it was especially helpful because I have been engaged in Internet marketing for years and thinking about diversifying into direct marketing (DM). Well, after reading the book I realized that I have successfully executed a number of direct marketing campaigns, using the Web as a direct response tool. Additionally, he gave me new ideas to put to use and the confidence to break into new forms of the discipline. Whether or not you want to get into DM, or are a seasoned veteran, I recommend this book to broaden your knowledge base. It will certainly help you design and execute more creative and profitable campaigns, and improve your marketability in the profession.

Bob Bly has hit the cover off the ball again! This book is a no-nonsense, roll-up-your-sleeves, hold-your-hand-from A-Z look at how to make more money selling your products or services via Direct Marketing. There are many "how to" books out there that tell us what to do, but not HOW TO DO IT! This is not one of them. You will quickly learn "insider" tools and techniques that bring home the bacon no matter what you're selling. I have highly recommended Bob Bly's nuts and bolts books to my business clients for years and this one is no exception. In fact, it's a no-brainer investment. Pretty Good Recipes

Review Date: 2002-05-07
Not the best toddler cookboook I have found but suits it's purpose. A lot of the recipes seem based on British/ European foods that I am pretty sure my family would not like. I wished that there were more independant recipes for kids rather than breaking down the family meal into adult, toddler and baby. But, the suggestions I have used are simple and tasty, great to amuse the kids and healthy to boot. Some pretty good ideas in here.

Excellent source for nutritious, tasty meals for kids!

I like to make sure my child is getting great nutrition and eating all the right foods. Who said that every child has to eat hot dogs, french fries, chicken fingers, etc. If you follow these recipes and get your child eating these types of foods early on, your chances are much greater that they will be excellent eaters as the get older. I borrowed my book and have to return it, so the publisher definitely needs to go back to the printing press.

It's complete, informative, illustrated-in-detail, and fun! I really enjoy this book. It's too bad it's out of print, or I would buy a copy. As it is, I have to keep rechecking it out of the library whenever I can get it. I'm the mother of 5 children and I sure wish I had had this book years ago!

Review Date: 1999-05-04
A great resource for any CEO, business manager, marketer, pr or advertising person. Howard brings a fresh approach to managing your corporate image from much more than just a design point of view.

The corporate image and the process of managing it is a discipline that affects all areas of your business. Now you can find out how to turn this to your advantage.

The use of live examples throughout the book helps to clearly illustrate the effect that the mis-management, and pro-active management of your corporate image has on the public, your customers and prospects.

It is a unique book in the subject of corporate image.

I have read the book three times. It was very useful for my doctorate thesis. It brings a new approach to the corporate image subject. It supports the idea that corporate image is not just a graphic design, it is also a marketing and a management discipline. For this reason it is not enough to design corporate image, it also has to be managed. This is a new idea that nobody thought it before. I also like the new idea that with this new approach corporate image has some functions as being a catalyst for change, as a filters in the communication process and as being 5.P of marketing mix. By having a new ideas about this subject, it is a unique book in the subject of corporate image. This book is also very useful for companys which want to take an advantage in the global world by building an efficient corporate image. Lastly, the book contains new ideas and new approaches about corporate image. And whoever interested in this subject, he should read this book. Ireally recommend it.

One of the most interesting book i have read about the importance of corporate identity. It is absolutely important to know how to build a good identity and how to communicate the same to the client.

I'm 100% accurate that in the next years to come, identity, image, communication will be the most important assets in guatemalan companies.

Excellent! A 'how to' approach to the new paradigm
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1999-09-07
The new paradigm being promoted by Howard (and an increasing number of others in the field) is the view of Corporate Image as a completely integrated discipline - reaching far beyond the traditional (logo/font/colours/packaging etc) design approach. It's summed up in the quote, 'if it touches the consumer it's a Corporate Image issue'.

The book goes on to provide, along with a host of case studies and examples, practical steps to performing everything from an initial audit to executing a full Corporate Image program. Includes check-lists, best-practice suggestions, and some serious points on change management that must also be heeded if any such programme is to succeed!

I'll use this book for years to come as a reference and guide.

Just as her handbags are incredibly unique, her book is a one-of-a-kind treasure. Every page is filled with scrumptious pictures that I've gone back to look over again and again. Robin tells fun stories of her childhood and how it (and her family) helped form her style. Interesting little tidbits that I've not read about in the magazine articles. You'll want to take your time with this book as Robin walks us through "Living Beautifully". Truly my favorite decorating book by far!

I have long been a fan of the Magnolia Pearl style, pre-ordered this book months ago (February 2008) and counted the months until it's arrival. No disappointment whatsoever... This is a book filled with luscious photos and beautiful reading for the soul. I have savored each page from the very first photo of Robin and John's home at Twilight to Robin's last words of remembering to be true to yourself in your decorating style (somehow these words set me free - you'll understand after you read the book!). Beautiful antiques, peacock feathers galore, welcoming porches, enchanting lighting, gorgeous windows, lush beds with layer upon layer and even a section for Pets. This book is truly a feast for the eyes and Robin's easy writing style feeds the soul. I did not want this book to end. In other words, I highly recommend this beautiful book and feel you will want to put aside a few minutes each evening to truly take in this book... "Enjoy"!

I've been waiting months for this book and it hasn't disappointed. This book is different from any other "decorating" book I've seen. It's one part decorating, one part biography and one part philosophy, sprinkled with wit and warmth. This is the first decorating book that I've read cover to cover! Robin Brown clearly put her heart and soul into this book. After reading it, I feel as if I've spent the weekend at her beautiful home. The photos give you a true sense of being there and her text is personal and honest. Robins ideas are unique and accessible and can be applied to any home. I'm going to be decorating my yurt in Magnolia Pearl style!!!!

This is a fun and entertaining book which pretty much thumbs its nose at traditional interiors. "There's no such thing as too much color" (p 91) Magnolia Pearl decided.

Certainly her choices color are astonishing--layer upon vivid layer, one explosion of red and gold piled on top of pink and purple--yet she manages to pull it off. Laces and velvets, damasks and bits of feathers combine to dazzle the eye in every room.

If you are, say, a college student living on a shoestring, and wish you could think of some way to liven up your shoebox of a dorm room, this book will fill you with ideas. This is certainly the way to turn trash and flea market treasures into colorful, intensely personal style. Also there are great hints. She very carefully explains how to tea stain any bits of lace you may have.

Buttle's book is a comprehensive coverage of CRM, without the bias of a particular "magic bullet" solution to push. The author covers several models of CRM, each with relative strengths and weaknesses, then explores important related topics such as customer experience and the role of systems in CRM programs. This book provides the best overall treatment of the subject for anyone interested in understanding and applying customer relationship management concepts in the real world.

Expanded and updated second edition
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-11-03
Hello! I'm the author of the book, and would like to explain how the second edition has been expanded, updated and enhanced.

The publishers contacted adopters and readers of the first edition and asked them what changes they'd like to see incorporated into the new edition. Thanks to everyone who took part. This resulted in a number of important improvements to this edition.

The book is significantly expanded. At seventeen chapters, the second edition is seven chapters longer than the first edition. There are three new chapters dedicated to operational CRM applications - sales force automation, marketing automation and service automation. The chapters define important terms, identify the main vendors and actors, and set out the benefits CRM users can expect to experience and the functionality that is available.

There is a new chapter entitled `understanding relationships'. If CRM is about developing and maintaining relationships with customers, it is important to have clear understanding of what a relationship looks like, and how, if at all, it can be managed. This chapter defines the term `relationship', examines whether customers want relationships with suppliers and vice versa, identifies attributes of successful relationships and reviews five different schools of thought that have influenced relationship management in a business context.

There is a new chapter on planning and implementing CRM projects. This takes readers through a disciplined 5-stage process designed to promote successful CRM outcomes.

There is a new chapter on `customer experience'. Customer experience has become something of a buzzword in the last few years. This chapter explores the concept of customer experience, and addresses the question of whether CRM can or does enhance customer experience.

Many new case illustrations have been added to every chapter, and all other content has been revised and updated. An added feature of this edition is the inclusion of a large number screenshots from CRM software applications. This is designed to give readers a sense of the CRM user's experience.

A final enhancement to this edition is the provision of an array of enriching online content, targeted at meeting the needs of readers and adopters. Adopters have access to a comprehensive set of PowerPoint materials, case studies, learning exercises, and links to CRM vendors, ASP's and analysts.

This should be considered for any curriculum through the master's level as an overview of CRM. I've been steeped in marketing and management texts for months and most of them miss the mark entirely on CRM.

Buttle's writing is clear and his organization of the material is even better. I especially appreciated his discussion about quality and the importance of understand that the market's perception of quality drives satisfaction and competitiveness. This helps fill in what is a chronic gap in CRM: Most companies look for ways to find the right customers and fire the bad ones using data analytics that they call CRM, based on some of the most insidious principles of customer value management (CVM), viz., that it's the value the customer has to YOU that matters most. That's not the full picture. It's the value YOU have to the customer and prospect that makes sure you're going to be around for any length of time.

This is but one example of how Buttle has laid out CRM as a complete view of the organization, inside and out.

My only "ding" is that it needs to be updated a bit: The next part of CRM will be customer experience management (CEM), which starts with a business rules layer driven precisely by perceived value metrics, so that the right value components of your value proposition are expressed in the right channels in the right way. Another trend that should be emphasized more is the value of using a multi-channel approach for gathering the voice and behavior of the customer to drive innovation, operations and marketing.

So, if you're interested in a well-written, documented, rich and yet broad view of CRM and its implications for your organization, Buttle is a great buy. But also pick up something on customer experience management.

Dante's Devine Comedy is one of the greatest philosophical reads I have ever laid my eyes on. The art work and narrations are exquisite! This would make a great addition to any Philosopy textbook.

Long I have been looking for this book, recommended by one of the greatest teachers in my school. This piece of work its perfect from beginning to end. You will immerse yourself in the epic journey of these two great characters and their moral conflicts when facing every stage that hell has prepared for most of human kind. The grammar is astonishing and elaborated to the point that not even one word looks out of place. Truly a masterpiece of all times.

NOTE: Barnes and Noble sells it for only $17.98 in store or online.

Great translation. The classic black and white illustrations by THE master Gustave Dore. A must for your classics library. I bought it at B&N, very happy with the quality of paper and the lay-out.
This title is quite large in size, almost coffee table book style. Not for dragging around the beach.
Highly recommended!

I must confess that the large format makes reading the formal translations a bit easier on the eyes. The volume also includes a preface and section introductions/interpretations in contemporary english which make the text much more approachable. And the woodcut illustrations are simply gorgeous - it's worth getting the book just for these. They really bring to life the imaginations from when they were created in the 19th century all the way back several hundred years more to when Dante wrote the text. They also help to explain the perceptions that our predecessors had of religion, sin, and piety. This is a terrific volume - highly recommended.

One tangential note - if you like the illustrations in this you should also check out "Barlow's Inferno", published a few years ago. Wayne Douglas Barlow synthesizes interpretations of hell from many cultures and periods into illustrations of terror and frightful beauty. Barlow is the spiritual inheritor of Dore's vision.

More Understandable Than the Bible

This book was well researched and well written. It took a subject that is often confusing and frustrating and made it truly a story. A story that is understandable and not forgettable. Could this story be more accurate than the short ones we have read in the Bible? Jim Bishop skillfully brought together historical data from archeological digs, literature, and linguistics that may give a well-rounded account of what really happened. The four authors in the Bible have provided our best view of the amazing birth until this book was written with the help of thousands of researchers. Before any person tries to tackle the Biblical story, this book should be read thoroughly.

Jim Bishop has given new, rich meaning to Christmas and Easter with these two wonderfully vivid accounts of Jesus' birth and death. His research and beautiful writing style has helped these stories come alive for me in a very memorable way. I enjoy reading these books every Advent and Lenten season to prepare for the joy of Christmas, the pain of Good Friday and the amazing joy of Easter.

A truly humanistic perspective of our Savior's last days.

The Day Christ Died is a detailed - intensely dramatic story of the times, thoughts and prespectives(which have been thoroughly researched)of the Savior, His Disciples, religion, govenment and the world in general during last hours of Christ's days on earth as God in the Flesh. It has given me deeper strength in my faith through understanding what He endured because of his love for us sinners. A God in the flesh with all the pain and emotions of man, but still a diety. A must read!

In reading Jim Bishops' book and referring to the maps included in the front and back as I read, I found that I was there. I was transported 2000 years back to the most infamous day in history and watched the events of the last 24 hours of Christs' life unfold.

I have given away dozens of copies of this book over the years since I discovered it and have never had anyone not come back to thank me. I reccommend this book to ANYONE who will read it regardless of their beliefs. In it's own way, it has sometimes had a much more profound effect upon those that choose to read it than that of the bible itself. If I were told I could no longer read the bible but could choose one book to take it's place, Jim Bishops' book would be the only choice I could make. It contains within it the complete story and reason for His coming and His murder.

I take time to read it every Easter season and have not yet failed to experience again the awesome chills and overwhelming emotions I felt the first time I read it. It is the most incredible single work to come from the 20th century.
