This is a very fun book, though most of the story is via illustrations due to the limitation of only using a ten word vocabulary.

I read this to my daughter once. Then I made ten flash cards and we practiced with them until she knew them backwards, forwards and upside down. Once she learned them, she was "allowed" to read the book all by herself and thus began the "backwards" tradition of her reading to me instead of me reading to her.

She is 25 today and a voracious reader, so this book worked! And it's *fun* to read!

As a toddler this was my favorite book (my parents tell me). Now that I am a parent, I looked to find this part of my childhood for my own toddler. It was difficult to come by, but worth the time spent searching. It is a very simple book (uses only 10 words as the series denotes), but simplicity is its strength. My toddler is quickly learning to say "pickle" and "popped" after only a few reads.

Just a cool book

Again, a memory from childhood. This had to be one of the very first books i check out of the school library in kindergarten. I can't believe how hard it actually was to track down over the years, but again the internet and amazon save a collector again. This is a funny little story about a town and their king gathering pickles and piling them high, until suddenly they explode and a huge pond of pickle juice is made. It simple, easy to read, and you can have a heck of a lot of fun with it reading it to your kids...or if your board in the office. So please consider this book as a funny piece in a kids collection that could be passed down from generation to generation. There are other versions available of this book, including a 10-word reader series book, as well as the original scholastic hard back (and this paperback). there is also a paperback reissue available at some places online.

This was the very first book I ever checked out from the library at my school when I was in kindergarten. Make it the first book you child wants to read and hear every night. It is a ridiculously simple book, and utterly entertaining. Plot: Peter has to pick some pickles... Then fun and chaos ensues. The artwork nicely compliments the story and still makes me giggle to this day. Well worth any price you pay for it.

Simply the best book out there on PR -- written for all walks of life. Having graduated with a degree in public relations and worked for the past decade in agency and corporate high-tech PR, with mixed experiences and mixed feelings about the industry, I now feel revived in my chosen career path after feasting on Mr. Saffir's book. Intriguing, down-to-earth and clearly written, Saffir's guide to utilizing proven public relations skills in any field or business -- indeed in life -- has already affected me deeply.

Mr. Saffir's does not mince words with numerous practical tips (Rule No. 1: Read, read, read!), entertains with many short stories, and ends with touching personal advice in the final two chapters. His parting stories include a moving PR drama he experienced with Filipino president Ferdinand Marcos, and a thrill-of-victory-agony-of-defeat attempt at pioneering a newspaper in New York City. Add Saffir's involvement with many U.S. presidents, senators and celebrities - all told in the humble spirit of PR lessons learned - and this could be a public relations memoir for the history books. But it's not. It sticks to its promise to the average man or women in business: here are proven strategies for getting noticed - free, cheap, and worth the money.

PR on a Budget is re-invigorating me in my career. It's a confidence booster like nothing I've experienced before. Having been asked recently to teach public relations to a group of small business owners, can you guess my text for the session? It was all PR on a Budget, of course. And don't take lightly Saffir's offer for personal advice and help. He was good on his promise. This man is for real.

Here's the Basic Rules

This book could also be called something like: 'Everything you wanted to know about PR but didn't know whom to ask.'

The real secret to PR is that you need to establish a relationship between yourself and the media you'd like to tell the public something about you. As Mr. Saffir says, this doesn't need to be an out to lunch and drinks friendship. It's an understanding that you can help each other.

I do the PR for a series of non-profits under the auspicies of the local arts council. The various organizations do plays, choral concerts, children's theater, special arts shows and the like. We want people to know about the events we put on, otherwise noone comes. The local newspaper and radio stations have an equal need. To do their job, they need to tell people what's going on in our community.

After that understanding comes the work. I write up a press release, a story if you will talking about the play or whatever. I print out the story, I put it on a floppy disk (to save them the time of retyping), I take a few pictures and put them on the paper and on the disk.

This little book demystifies how businesses of any size can use similar techniques to work with the media they'd like to give them some ink.

One last comment. Sometimes the media will make a mistake. DON'T COMPLAIN! You never want to argue with someone who buys ink in 55 gallon drums. It was your fault, not theirs.

In his latest book, PR legend Leonard Saffir shatters the well-worn myth that big PR firms deliver superior services to small PR firms. He gives practical and effective information and absolutely levels the playing field for small business on a PR budget. He explains the importance of mastering the "New PR," and clearly explains how to put this new discipline to work in conducting a full-fledged PR campaign -- even if you're not a professional PR consultant.

And, if you'd prefer not to do-it-yourself and hire a PR agency instead, Saffir leads you safely through the minefield of choices. Leonard Saffir excels at showing small business owners who value PR how to stay ahead of their competition whether they conduct their own PR campaign, or hire a pro to do the job.

I have over 10 years of media relations experience and have read hundreds of books and articles that have attempted to summarize (for business owners) the effectiveness of PR. For the first time I've actually found a PR book I'd send to clients, prospects and fellow PR practitioners! Leonard Saffir's "PR on a Budget" does an excellent job providing a 'behind the scenes' look at how to effectively leverage PR and more important (and challenging) - the media. One of the reasons Saffir's book hit home with me was his ability to address the new tactics necessary to break through the clutter created by many businesses jumping into the PR arena. If you're not there or just starting be sure and pick up this book...it's a necessity!

I really enjoyed reading Erika's book. It was an easy and enjoyable read. I picked up some new ideas and tips towards building my business. I also was reminded of ways to market myself that I had forgotten about. Some notes/quotes I took from the book: "Stop looking so hard. Look easy. Be open.", "Who is served when you stay small?", "How can I be of service?", Smile before you pick up the phone. Thank you Erika for inspiring me right when I needed it!

Erica Nelson clearly has a thorough grasp of the Law of Attraction and all the nuances of putting it into effect in order to attract success and happiness! Her writing style is fun and kept me fascinated and wanting to know more with each page, and her ideas flow smoothly and are easy to understand, which is so important if you want to actually put new concepts and habits into your life! I'm a professional psychic, and I've been using and teaching the Law of Attraction for years - it's been around about 5,000 years at least - Buddha said "What we think, we become". I feel Erica is a wise teacher. I'm very impressed with this book and I highly recommend it to anyone who desires practical help toward happiness and success!

Review Date: 2001-07-24
1st & foremost, this is the BEST book i've read in a long time. Kennedy acheives what Gates & West do NOT ... an intelligent discourse on important issues currently facing racial minorities that is rooted in fact. he offers facts & precedent to support his opinions, views & hypothesis ... as opposed to rhetoric supported by rhetoric.

the book dissects the historical perversion of criminal justice/law enforcement to perpetuate the oppression of racial minorites. then it uses this historical context/premise to draw a picture of the current state of the relationship/role of the criminal justice system & law enforcement in minority communities. The book has brilliant sections on racial profiling, the war on drugs and the death penalty. each of these issues are dissected from a viewpoint of the critical legal issues ... and Kennedy finds time to interject his own opinion, SUPPORTED BY FACTS. Kennedy presents his material in a logical & organized mannner ... but not always concise. although i'm not a lawyer, it felt very much like a legal brief at times ... but it was still easy to read.

... highly, highly recommended, although it is a bit thick.

A great book!

As a graduate student in criminal justice - I find it enjoyable to read subjects that directly impact my course of studies and my profession. Race, Crime and the Law is one of the few books that I would STRONGLY recommend to every criminal justice, sociology and law student. In fact, I would recommend this book to anyone concerned with the current state of race relations within the United States. Kennedy's style and in your face writing is powerful and persuasive. This book is not written in the typical, arrogant style of many professors. Instead Kennedy writes this book for the masses.

This lucid work of kennedy's is a comprehensive and beautifully written examination of race and its ralation to the criminal justice system and the law. Kennedy's arguments are superb, and he supports everything that he says with hard evidence, leaving his sound biases and premises the only things left to be considered. Kennedy is, even in this last matter, careful to make this book an exploration rather than a persuasion, and while he does make arguements and try to persuade the reader, he does not condemn his opposition and he certainly does not limit the scope of his thinking in any way possibly detrimental to the flow of ideas.

Schools in America have always taught us with blindfolds on. It's up to the American people, [mainly people of color] to find the truth. The negative race relation state that America is today, is a direct result of the pre 1900's. Randall Kennedy shows us in this book how slanted the laws were during slavery times and what do you know, things haven't changed all that much.

For those of us who have this quest to visit every state in America or on a more local note, to travel Hwy 101 from border to border (and not starting in the middle somewhere) or stop at every State Park and Historical Monument in CA (and get your stamp in that State Park book), this book is for you. The layout of this spiral-bound book is so simple. For one, you can flip it over just like a notebook. There is no spine or glue to break down with pages falling out from bending the book backwards so much. Secondly, the lakes are diagrammed and labeled from top to bottom, North to South. The author just knew this book would be for those us who want to start at the Oregon border and work our way down, visting every lake in CA. Lake amenities such as availability of campsites and boat ramps are listed under each lake. For those us who live for camping and/or boating this is a must-have.

Clerly illustrates the necessary info about all lakes and places to enjoy boating. Easy to understand and use. We have purchased three editions over last ten years. Always in our boat. Suggestion, use a large zip-lock type bag to keep dry. Listen to the voice of experience. Also, it is not an effective storage method to leave on top of Jeep as you drive away from lake. Has a habit of not staying on top of car for 50 mile trip home.

This is a valuable reference and will save you disappointments in chosing the wrong lake. Call ahead to the individual facilities and ask questions. This is helpful in planning trips to the lake for your family. Enjoy.

Maribeth- Great compilation of simply terrific ideas. This book will help you develop some great ideas that won't cost you an arm and a leg to implement. As with all ideas that are easy to do, they are also easy not to do. Thus the simple differentiator are those that implement and follow-up and those that don't. Use these ideas to supplement your marketing plan as a Financial Advisor. You may find that two or three of these ideas make the difference between a decent year and a break out year. They have certainly helped in the practices that I've been involved with over the years. A staple for the library of any marketing professional in the financial services industry. On a final note, if you have a chance to listen to Maribeth speak don't miss it- she's one of the best.

I don't know about you, but I often wonder what life means to me. Most of us have at one time or another played the game Life or read Life magazine. Author Allen Klein remembers the Life magazine well. In his introduction, of "Reflections on Life", he tells, of a word, game he played as a child that describes the popular magazine, and life itself.

What's Life?
A magazine.
How much does it cost?
Twenty-five cents.
I only have a dime.
That's tough.
What's tough?
Life.
What's Life?
A magazine.

I was hooked after reading the first page. I knew I had to read every word. This book is a collection of about five hundred quotations. Quotations are written by many famous and not so famous people.

All the quotes are from people of all walks of life, about life. I tried to choose a favorite quote, but it just was not possible. I loved them all. Many of the quotes that jumped out at me were in the sections titled: "How to Enjoy the Journey". If I had to choose just two I would choose one written by Margie Klein. My second choice would be one written by American actor, Harvey Fierstein.

This book of quotes is a must read. My recommendation is for everyone and every age. I also suggest buying several copies to give to friends and family. They don't call Allen Klein the "Jolly-tologist" for nothing!

What do Tiger Woods and the Dalai Lama have in common? How about Grandma Moses and Gilda Radner? Albert Einstein and Yogi Berra?Or, what about Friedrich Nietzsche and Julia Roberts? The answer is that their quotes on life are all contained in Allen Klein's book, "Reflections on Life: Why We're Here And How To Enjoy The Journey." In fact, this gem of a book contains the wisdom, pathos, and humor of hundreds and hundreds of well known people from ancient through contemporary times. However, one of my favorite quotes is from an anonymous source:
Remember, life is not what happens to you but what you make of what happens to you. Everyone dies, but not everyone fully lives. Too many people are having "near-life experiences."
This is my kind of book. It's easy to read and digest, but is packed with reflections that may have a significant impact on your life. Highly recommended as a gift to yourself or someone you care about.

Life is a Journey to be Enjoyed

Best selling author, Allen Klein has collected quotations from 500 well known personalities on their philosophy of life and its' meaning. The book is made up of three sections, with answers to three questions. "What's life?", "Why we're here?" and "How to enjoy the journey."

The quotations tie to a theme within each of these subjects. The text is made up of quotes that are sometimes humorous, sometimes inspirational, sometimes encouraging, and often profound. A random sample is from Annie Dillard, American writer: "How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives."

Another is from Rick Warren, from the "Purpose Driven Life." "One of the greatest gifts God has given you is the ability to enjoy pleasure...He wants you to enjoy life, not just endure it."

To get the greatest benefit and enjoyment from your reading you must read and assimilate a few pages at a time. Reading between the lines while doing some soul searching I was reminded to "lighten up", to "loosen up", and "not take myself so seriously."

The author has included a complete index of authors. This becomes a handy tool for referring back to some of those favorite quotes or quips you want to read again.

This is a book for your coffee table, your night stand, and an excellent book to pass along to a friend. Keep an extra copy on hand to use as a gift for those special occasions.

The wonderful quotations in "Reflections on Life" offer everything from ancient wisdom to contemporary humor. Klein's collection of inspiring quotes are gathered from both well-known and lesser known figures. I particularly like being able to turn to any of the sections ("What's Life?," "Why We're Here," "How to

I totally loved the book...and it was so well written. I could have never guessed who Mr. Smith was...but then again, I guess that was the point of the book. But everything just moved so fast that by the time I finished the book, my head was spinning. There were no breaks and everything can just zip right through you without you knowing it...you could even get killed without knowing it. That was how great the book was and I totally enjoyed it. And I especially loved Jago. He was such a sweet guy even though he fell with the wrong crowd...he has a good sense of humor...and totally stood up for that Talbot woman. Yup...it was a good book and in the future I will be looking forward to reading more of Jack Higgins books!

I reserve 5 stars for classics like "The Eagle has landed", but this book comes close. There are plenty of twists and turns and unlike repetitive characters of Higgins, you wonder when a major character in this book will get bumped off the next page.

Sarah Talbot and Sean Egan came from 2 different world, an ex-SAS from London East End who had to quit due to a knee injury, and a Wall Street terror whom Washington bigwigs queue to kiss her hand. But they have one thing in common, people they love had died under strange circumstances and the corpses to smuggle heroin.

Ferguson of Group 4 (in this book, Harry instead of Charles, wonder if they are one and the same), Tony Villiers, another intel officer, knew it was linked to some sensitive issues and made no open inquiry, effectively denying official investigation.

But Sarah Talbot and Sean Egan had no such burdens and vowed to discover the truth and the mastermind behind the tragic deaths of their loved ones.

It was interesting as the bad guys found out early in the game they had crossed powerful people and tried desperately to stay ahead, denying Sarah and Sean information without killing the two bereaved. Sarah carried an aura of protection due to her political connections to the White House, and Sean used his underworld connections to get clues and leads, his uncle being Jack Shelley, an infamous London gangster.

Their adversary was one ex-para named Jago who works for the mysterious Mr Smith. One by one, Jago sought to eliminate the links from the 2 bodies but Sarah and Sean just managed to gain a little clue each time before their links were terminated abruptly.

From London, to Paris, to Sicily, to Ireland, the trail finally leads back to the shadowy streets of London East End where the mysterious Mr Smith is unmasked.

Higgins gave a good description of the trial by fire of Sarah who was determined to step into a different world, of murder and mayhem and lawlessness (illegal ones, not the legal kind in Wall Street). Readers could actually see that it is one thing to be incensed by the murder of a beloved, it is quite another to go out to the streets seeking revenge.

This is definitely one of Higgins' better books, where the reader is kept in suspense and the action was fast and furious but not mindlessly so, with each chapter providing clues and hints and kept essential to the development.

a good read

One of Jack Higgins' best. It is a good story with good characters (Sarah, Sean and even Jago). It keeps you interested right until the surprises at the end. All in all it's a good read.

Written by Sales Excellence Inc. founder and president Bill Stinnett, Selling Results: The Innovative System for Maximizing Sales by Helping Your Customers Achieve Their Business Goals is a guide to maximizing one's sales success through increasing deal size, whether in terms of volume purchased or duration on contracts; accelerating sales velocity through shortening one's development process and/or the customer's buying process; improving the accuracy of sales forecasts; and much more. Written in plain terms for practicing sales professionals of all walks of life, Selling Results is an invaluable resource packed cover to cover with wisdom borne from experience. "A [business] relationship is typically not the reason a customer decides to buy, but it can have a huge influence on who they openly share information with and who they ultimately decide to buy from. The quality of your client relationships is important, but the quantity also matters." The step-by-step instructions for categorizing sales opportunities and dimensions that can be improved to create a more favorable sales environment are particularly useful in this excellent supplementary resource for career salesmen and saleswomen, whether they are on a lot floor or proposing a merger.

Bill does it again with his straightforward, practical guide of a book, Selling Results. I found this book helpful for several reasons. One, Bill builds on concepts he introduced in his first book, Think Like Your Customer. Urgency, Motive, Business Value, and focusing on the buying process. Two, Bill is constantly reminding us that we must get the customer to commit. He tells us to be willing to walk away when it makes sense to do so. Three, he challenges sales people to take honest assessments of their sales efforts. For example, while many sales people neglect prospecting and hide behind the veil of customers demanding too much rep time, the fact is it must be done to avoid suffering the consequences of the neglect. Four, he provides valuable tools like the Opportunity Scorecard to decide how attractive each opportunity really is. And five, Bill reinforces a running theme of staying on the offense with your selling.

This is one the better sales books that I have seen published recently. The book is very easy read and comes with a number of templates and worksheets that can be put to use immediately. This book is a great guide for salespeople involved in complex sales, which requires a very systematic and scientific approach to the sales processes. I strongly recommend Selling Results by Bill Stinnett.
