I am so excited to have this book! It is a beautiful book. The first section sketches a brief history of Copperplate, the second teaches how to make the letters (with both correct examples and incorrect examples and plenty of explanations). The last section provides a few guidelines and ideas for how to work out your layouts and projects to get you started. This book seems to be an excelent book on the fundamentals of copperplate. As I said before, it is a beautiful book, and I can hardly wait until I finish my pressing projects to start workin on my Copperplate.

A beautiful work

I have a number of books on Copperplate. This is the most thorough, and produces the best results. Winters sweats the details, both in the letterforms (which all the books cover), but in the fine details of them, details of posture, help in choosing paper and ink (A real issue when trying to learn copperplate -- the right paper can make all the difference).

Absolutely, if you're trying to learn Copperplate, get a copy of Winters and read it. It will make all the difference.

This is a wonderful book that goes into great detail about how to write each letter. The author knows so much about copperplate and she offers great advice and tips. Listen to her advice! Instructions are very easy to follow and I got a really great understanding of writing copperplate. Great for beginners or for those with experience who want to work on technique.

This book is wonderful! Mt daughter got interested in calligraphy after a project in school about colonial America. I bought this book for her to try to learn one of the styles of that period. It was a bit much for her, but I became fascinated by it and quickly began to improve my own penmanship. This style of writing is not the easiest form of calligraphy out there, and I wouldn't reccommend it for someone just learning to use a calligraphy pen, but after a little practice holding the pen and some basic calligraphy like unical or roman, an older child or adult will find this a very helpful book.

Very thorough introduction to a once practical hand of calligraphy

First to Eleanor--thank you thank you thank you! For giving me a handwriting style that will last centuries yet.

Ahem... Copperplate hand is beautiful, and instead of having to guess how to go about making it right from a one-page sample, you have a kind and considerate teacher walk you through a complete tutorial in a real-world classroom pace--with every intention of actually passing down this beautiful hand--warts and elegance--all--from her years of experience into your fingers. This text will be your guide to teaching future generations this beautiful hand. I am honored to have found this book and even more honored to have the chance to learn this hand from a true master. I hope you will find it, as I did, that her tone is considerate, experienced, and helpful every step of the way--she made _every_ _word_ _count_. She will never bore you.

At this moment I plan to work on this hand whenever I take notes. I have a Namiki/Pilot Vanishing Point fountain pen, and although the default nib cannot vary stroke width through pressure--it's a hard nib--I have every intention of enjoying the styling of copperplate in my everyday writings. Like any others who have recently rediscovered the pleasure of writing a journal, I am using a fountain pen or a roller ball on a Moleskine brand notepad. There are many blogs and online write-ups helping you get into this fun activity. Check them out. But I realize I need a cursive hand to work on, otherwise my handwriting would remain illegible! But thanks to Ms. Winters--I am saved!

Found out about Richard Stokes from Perry Marshall. Amazing break down of what to do to be in control of my Adwords campaign. Neat little tricks and ways to save money. Technical but understandable. I'm seeing competitors' ads falling away because they apparently haven't read this book.

...and only the owner of a company like AdGooRoo could write this, explaining why and how. It's one thing to look at search results and study your Google account; it's another to gather data from thousands of companies and show exactly what works and does not. That's what Richard has done with this book.

As author of The Ultimate Guide to Google AdWords & having taught hundreds of thousands of people how to advertise on Google, I was elated to see Richard put hard numbers on many things I've believed but was unable to prove.

Richard shows:

--Specific types of keywords and searches and how they relate to buying behavior

--Hard factors that influence Quality Score and Click Thru Rate

--Information that is very hard to get from Google, like % ad exposure and relationships between bid price, ad position, Click Thru Rate and Conversion Rate

Richard explains the inner workings of Google's formula, revealing why ultra-relevant advertisers get a wonderful advantage of being served *all* the available clicks and not just a portion. If you're up against competition who is in that enviable position, you need all the intel you can get.

This book is not for beginners. I really don't see that as a problem, though, there are plenty of books that do that (such as my own). There's a whole class of Google advertisers who know all the basic stuff but are still perplexed by Adwords. They're in hyper-competitive markets duking it out with hundreds of bidders and they need advanced info. This book is perfect for them.

Easy to read with great online advertising insight

I've been working professionally with pay-per-click advertising for several years and I'm in as good of a position as any to review books on this subject.

This book is a little different than the 300 page tomes one usually finds written about AdWords. At just over 100 pages, this is a quick and easy read. It's evident that the author is an expert and is speaking from experience. It dives quickly into intermediate and expert-level optimizations that can have a huge impact on paid campaign results.

In fact, this is what I liked most about the book - it doesn't waste time repeating the same kinds of things you can find in other AdWords books. For instance, there's a great chapter which explains why high bids don't necessarily translate to high traffic and how you can use this relationship to drive more first-page traffic while lowering your average bid prices. It seems like nearly every chapter presented some new insight, some of which go right in the face of common AdWords thinking

The main shortcoming of the book is that it's not suitable to first time PPC marketers. If you haven't run a campaign before, you'll need some other resources in addition to this book.

In short, this book belongs on every professional search marketers shelf. 5 stars.

Mastering Search Advertising is a Concise, Transparent and Important Book

Review Date: 2008-09-08
Mastering Search Advertising is a highly concise, unique and useful book covering search engine marketing / Google Adwords. Many a book on this topic has said much more, but explained much less.

I draw this conclusion based on the following:
- The Foreword of the book gives a brief synopsis of Richard's journey of curiosity and passion for understanding and refining process, not an endless list of thank you's. You immediately feel a purpose, direction and his passion for the subject.

- Richard is clearly self-taught and has deviated from the beaten path and anyone reading this book would benefit from his years of effort. It reminds me of how Tommy Emmanuel learned how to play acoustic guitar without ever reading sheet music!

- The book explains clearly and transparently some of the basic rules of search engine marketing in a way that is rarely seen publicly.

- Richard does all of this with simple and concise explanations that are written in actual business language. It sets a foundation for the eventual moving of this space from mystery to science.

- The first four words of chapter 10 explain search perfectly: "Search engines prize relevancy."

- Some people might mildly object to his usage of his company Adgooroo as an example throughout the book. What those people don't understand is that: A) it would have been almost impossible to achieve the conclusions that are the foundations of this book without the Adgooroo solution having been developed, B) he explains the steps you'd need to do to achieve the results without Adgooroo (but it would likely be too time consuming) and C) he openly talks about alternative vendor solutions in a mutually respectful way lessens the sales element.

Enjoy your future reading. Your visit to Facebook, Twitter and/or my blog to continue this dialogue if you so desire is welcomed.

While I probably would have been embarrassed to walk up to a cashier at a book store with this title, I had no problem ordering it through the mail. I am not crazy about the name "Mr Schmooze", but I do think the book has a great message.

The message is to give to others. Do things for others. Be nice to others. Surprise people by letting them know you are thinking about them even when you are not around them. Its a pretty simple message that most of us have forgotten.

In the short book, Mr Schmooze teaches a college intern about interacting with others. He is constantly looking for ways to give to others and make them feel special. It works out well for him in the book, and I am sure it would work out well in real life.

I started thinking about it and I realized that I know only a few people in my life that are always trying to help others. Thats kinda sad, because I really know a lot of people. I guess its time to start expanding my circle of friends.

Overall its a good book. Not very thick, but with a powerful message. It took me a couple of hours to get through it. Thats good, because it will be easy to reread every so often so I don't forget the message.

Read it! Re-read it!

This book is one of those rare finds that can truly light the fire! The ideas are presented in a fun, easy and quick read. I find myself generating even more ideas because, like a "yes pattern," reading Mr. Shmooze puts my mind in a "creativity pattern" that encourages me to keep taking my thinking to the next level.

I read it every time I need a little motivation, or each time I am searching for a solution and need to think outside the box.

You don't have to be in a sales role to benefit from this book. Everyday, we all need to sell ourselves and our ideas to our Supervisors, Co-workers, clients, customers and even our families. Mr. Shmooze can help.

I have read several sales "how to" texts through my 10 year career in medical sales (pharmaceutical, device, and biotech indutries) and this has been my best find to date. Recently, I have taken on national and international sales training for my company, and have ordered this text for the new hires who have limited sales expereince. There are also great tips for the well expereinced sales representatives as well. The MSDR includes great info on how to get past gate keepers, how to sell to multiple levels within a hospital, through sales basics.

I've been in the device business for about 5 years now and picked up this book a few months ago. There were things I'd never thought of in there. My return on investment (based on some new ideas from the book) was very high and my manager is taking a look at it right now. I was sceptical as well. Nice free gifts also. I just gave Ryan my Amazon order number and he sent the the freebies.

This book is one of my favorites, and has been for many years. Its beautiful color illustrations are grouped by the period and country in which they were created. The book presents works (mostly paintings) from many countries (mostly Western) beginning in the Byzantine era, extending up until the early twentieth century. Many of the works are accompanied by art historical abstracts which offer insight for both the inexperienced and learned art enthusiast. This is a great book to have around as an extensive survey of Western painting.

Review Date: 2004-10-07
This is a large book full of pictures of beautiful artworks. While there are some photos of sculpture and some of drawings, the bulk of what is reproduced here is painting. While many pages have multiple artworks, there are also quite a few where the painting is given a full page for more close observation and study.

The quality of the reproductions is quite good, if not quite superb. The captions and text describing the art and artists are very good and most helpful for the general reader. The book opens with several articles on the National Gallery and its history and policies.

The plates are organized chronologically and by the national schools of their times. The earliest artworks are circa the 13th century and concludes with works of the 20th century.

You could spend many days enjoying this glorious selection of art and still find many more days of study before you exhaust all that is offered in this fine book about a great national treasure.

This book is an excellent postscript to reading thousands of pages about the air war in Europe. I've always been fascinated by what the air crews did, and how they lived their lives. Part of what makes it so interesting is the vast span of time that exists between now and then. This book, through photographs, documents that span of time... and through these photographs, you can see how something so large as a world war can fade into the past, which in a special kind of way makes the people involved that much more interesting: larger than time... bigger than anything you can see now. The text in this book is limited (by their design), yet concise and informative. Yet, if a picture is worth a thousand words, this book is probably a million words long. I haven't seen pictures as vivid as those in this book anywhere else. Many are in full color, some are vintage WWII color photos spanning two pages. The appendix is filled some pretty amazing statistics, right down to the number of .50 caliber rounds fired by 8th AF bombers.

The foreword by Andy Rooney is pretty revealing as well. You won't watch him on 60 minutes the same way again.

History books alone cannot convey information to our successors like a story retold by someone who had the events firmly planted in their memory by the first-hand impact of the situation.

I was exposed to this series in reverse!! I read the books, then saw the BBC shows, and finally heard the BBC radio show. There are subtle and not so subtle differences in all the different media, but they are all pure Douglas Adams!!! The radio scripts are an essential, and clarify (At least for me they did) many things that were not co clear. Not everyone is drawn to the scripts of the favorite shows/broadcasts, but as I have all the scripts for the Monty Python shows, it works for me. Especially if you are a fan of "British" humor, most of which lies in the dialog, it is pure delight to read through these scripts!!

So, you've read the books... bought the tv series on dvd, gone through all the special features (including the comment captions on the film)... read the biographies... and hunted up collectors items on ebay. What next?

Get this book. "The Original Hitchhiker Radio Scripts" contains many scenes not in the books and, if you've already heard the radio series, many lines that were trashed for time. There is also commentary after each episode by Perkins and Adams.

Some things will seem eerily familiar, then zoom off into a completely different direction and, in my opinion, a better direction. Of course, some things are missing that make the books equally essential.

You can currently get this at a pretty good price used from amazon. Get it now before you can't get it at all.

Although it requires a fair amount of effort to sift through the directions and radio-style writing, the reward is some stuff that I, frankly, find much funnier than much of the Hitchhiker novel series. Recommended to anyone who wants a good laugh, and especially to Hitchhiker fans.

...life forms are required to use a seldom-exercised ability called "imagination" which, with effort, allows the user to paint a mental tapestry that is superior in many respects to any computer generated image or subjective image of perfection.

(takes a breath)

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy goes on a bit about the relative superiority of radio as a medium that stimulates the pleasure centers of the brain, but it also notes several references to various works that endure in a medium regarded as deader than the telegraph.

The Hitchhiker's Guide is not only proof that radio is still a viable medium for drama, but that Douglas Adams is a genius. The show, scripted week-by-week by DNA and Geoffrey Perkins was easily translated to books and television with minimal edits. Yes, the second series is a bit off the ultimate track, but it is quite original and the foot notes from Douglas and Perkins are very insightful. These footnotes exist as a log of what took place when it all began and, sadly, as the only memoir to them.

If you can find it, get it.

I love this guy. He puts it right out there about how customer service ought to be, and we all wish that everyone's customer service were as good as some of the shining examples he relates. We are assaulted at every turn by so many bad customer service experiences that we're grateful when someone even does an average job of what they're supposed to do, much less go above and beyond. We should all remember those basic keys to our business: know your customers and their needs and wants; know your product; know what your competitors are doing and how to beat them. Scott Gross goes beyond this with the "outrageous" part: be prepared to do something so extraordinary and unexpected for your customers that they can't help but tell others how great your service is. When was the last time you told all your friends about extraordinary customer service? I have stories from 10-20 years ago that I tell to this day because the service was so great. Do you? I've been fortunate enough to hear T. Scott Gross as a keynote speaker at a conference, and he's just as warm, thoughtful and encouraging in person as he is in his books. If you're in business or deal with the public, or even if you just want to have great family and friend relationships, you must have at least one of his books in your personal library.

A must-have in every business owner's toolkit

If more people read and implemented outstanding service, then we wouldn't be having all those 'siteAsucks.com' and 'siteBsucks.com' web sites.

This book targets the lifeline of any business - your customers -and talks about common sense - how to make them happy - so that they not only come back, but they also tell others!

The concept is very simple. But this is probably the only book I have ever found about delivering "outrageous" service.

I have myself implemented (long before reading this book, of course :-) what I call as "Not Technical Support - But FANATIC'nical Support" on my own site at WebmasterInABox.net

So, it was exciting to see an entire book dedicated to this topic. And in spite of knowing what brilliant customer service is, I had managed to brainstorm about 200 different ideas to provide "outrageous" service, before I had delved even 20 pages into the book.

A great buy. On my top 10 list.

Here's a customer service success and sometimes hilarious failure story book, packed with practical, real world ideas that really work that you'll really enjoy reading. Gross says great selling is a by-product of great service. He shares his hard-serve, soft-sell secrets and shows you how to make serving customers more fun and less frustrating once you decide to raise your customer service bar to Positively Outrageous Service.

Thia is a favorite book of mine. I read it to my eight children and to any children's group I had the privilege of teaching. It teaches do not steal and do not try to twist the intentions of authority. Mama Panda gave her son money to pay for ingriedents for a cake, not for him to go to the fair.

This was a favorite book of mine 25 years ago. My mom saved our original copy and now I read it to my 3 and 2 yr olds nearly every night. It is their top request. The rhymes, illustrations, and take home message are absolutely precious. Brings back such sweet memories of my own childhood!

The number one favorite of hundreds of books read to my four small children, (now honors graduates of Boston University, American U., and Syracuse U.) Panda Cake teaches lessons, rhymes, tells a story, entertains and remains memorable 20 years later. Wonderful illustrations and particularly great for younger brothers or sisters. Hands down the cutest relatively modern children's book we have ever read.

This book still brings a smile to my face every time!

I am one of 5 siblings who adored this book as a child. Twenty years later, as adults, we are all fighting over who gets to keep it! I will have to purchase more! So far, I am the only one with a child. My 3 year old son LOVES this book! The black and white drawings are lovely and are not cartoonish versions of animals, they look more realistic. There are many opportunities to learn about rhyming, animals and consequences. You could also educate your child about fragile Panda's and how important it is to help them. I wish that they would reprint this book. My copy will probably fall apart by the time my son is done "loving" it! Buy this book if you can find it!
