I originally bought this songbook in the 1960's when I was a teenager. During the ensuing years it disappeared. I've taken up guitar again, and wanted this songbook back. I was delighted to find it. It's still the best ever for those interested in folk music

In 1965 - this book taught me how to play guitar. The songs are shown in their original keys and are not easy for a beginning guitarist. HOWEVER, all songs are transposed and with the use of a CAPO (song book says CAPO at 3rd Fret) you are playing the same chords Joan plays. If your guitar is tuned.. you play right along with her.. sure beats Volga Boatman!

Excellent for beginning guitarists!

The Joan Baez Songbook is an excellent foray into the folk music that put Ms. Baez on the map. All the songs included are classics, and easy to play. Fans of Joan Baez or folk music should have this songbook in their repertoire.

Hang on for a wild ride!

Review Date: 2007-08-10
This is certainly the best book so far in this series. The action is non-stop, and the tension just keeps increasing. We get a first-hand look at the operation of First Nation-owned gambling casinos, and the effects both good and bad that these facilities have on the First Nation tribes that have them. They bring prosperity and money for programs for the people, but they can also bring unsavoury people and companies to the casino because these people want to take advantage of he money that is being made. This book runs two parallel stories as usual. Father John is trying to determine what happened to an Arapaho who has disappeared. This Arapaho is the pit boss at the casino on the Wind River Reserve. Vicky is working as a lawyer for the casino and uncovers many secrets and frauds that get her into a pack of trouble. And of course, there are dead bodies along the way. The plot eventually melds together, and we have the formidable pair of Father John and Vicky Holden working together to uncover evil, dishonesty and also to unmask a murderer. This series keeps on getting better and better.

Excellent book if you like Native American thrillers. We read a lot of the Thurlo books and Margaret Coel's books are a lot like those. The book keeps you on you seat and guessing all the time about the plot. You won't be able to put the book down once you start.

Margaret Coel casts the dice to spin another tightly plotted mystery on the Wind River Reservation. Lean times force Vicki Holden to do some legal work for the new casino on the reservation though she has doubts as to the easy money flowing to the tribe.
Vickie's path crosses Father John's and their feelings for each other still cloud their judgement despite their best efforts to ignore the regard.
With all mysteries a body turns up that demands justice. Father John and Vicki, both find questions that need answers around the casino. But a new man proves them wrong in their assessment of him, and finds a place in Vickie's heart.
Pages turn till the very end, which provides clues for the next installment in the fine series.

Margaret Coel hits all the right notes in the latest book about Arapaho attorney Vicky Holden and the Wind River Reservation's priest, Father John. The discovery of a dead body at Double Dives brings Father John into an investigation, just as his friend Vicky is offered a job at the Indian reservation's gambling casino. Vicky has her doubts about the casino job, but she is convinced by Adam Lone Eagle, the other attorney at the casino that it would be beneficial to her people. Vicky has been barely making ends meet in her law practice, so she agrees to join Adam. As she learns more about the operation, Vicky becomes suspicious about the legality of some of its practices. The human side of gambling problems is revealed when one of Father John's employees becomes enmeshed in gambling debts. The delicate balancing act of Vicky and Father John's relationship is again addressed in this book, and the possibility of a new romance for Vicky causes them to face some issues that they have chosen to ignore in the past. The beautiful background of the Wyoming reservation, the well-defined characters, and the tightly-woven plot are all typical of this series.

It's always a treat reading a new "Margaret Coel"

This latests mystery was no exception. The plot involves a casino that has just opened on the Arapaho reservation in Wyoming. Vicki, an Arapaho lawyer, is desperate for work but not very excited when she gets offered some work by the casino -- she has some concerns about the place. In the meantime, Father John, Jesuit priest who runs the reservation mission, has been called on to say some prayers over a body that's been discovered. And that involvement leads to Father John's getting caught up in whatever is going on at the casino, as he attempts to locate someone who has gone missing. So -- you have both Father John and Vicki snooping around the casino, and since they have an unstated special regard for each other, you know their paths will cross -- and they do.

I don't know why I love Coel's mysteries so much, but it has to do with her portrayal of life on the reservation -- I feel like it's a place I know well, and that her fictional characters are real people I've met. The plotting is very good, but that's not why I read the books. My only complaints about her books are 1) enough of Vicki and Father John pining for each other -- Vicki needs to forget about him and find someone available; and 2) I don't like all the violence that usually marks the end of Coel's books -- this one being no exception.

I love this book because I can read it to my 4 year old granddaughter without having to try to make changes to the story as I go so she will understand it. It's not terribly simplistic, but is just right for that pre-school age. The stories aren't too short or too long -- again, just right. There are very colorful illustrations for every page of text, which is nice. The stories seem to adhere pretty much to the original tale, which is to say that they don't change all the endings to make them "politically correct", but they don't dwell on the bad things that happen to the big bad wolf or the witch in Hansel and Gretel or go into any detail. All in all, this is a really nice book to read to kids, with about 19 stories.

Another great "Treasury" book!

My sister received this book at the same time that I received "Treasury of Fairy Tales." Although I personally like the Fairy Tales better, this book has as many great, colorful pictures as the other one, and they differ in the style of drawings, which I liked. This had a few of the stories that are in the Treasury of Fairy Tales, which I enjoyed comparing the story and pictures to. Treasury of Bedtime Stories is indeed a remarkable book filled with great stories to keep the children interested. The stories in this book are:
Goldilocks and the Three Bears
Hansel and Gretel
Henny Penny
Puss in Boots
Jack and the Beanstalk
The Little Red Hen
Snow White
The Three Little Pigs
The Tortoise and the Hare
The Steadfast Tin Soldier
Cinderella
The Ugle Duckling
The Pied Piper of Hamelin
The Sleeping Beauty
Rumpelstiltskin
The Three Billy Goayts Gruff
Beauty and the Beast
Little Red Riding Hood
The Gingerbread Man

I can't choose a favorite out of these, because they are all really great, but the ones that I think have the best pictures are Beauty and the Beast, Goldilocks, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty.

This is a book that I strongly recommend be bought for your children, because they will thank you when they are older for giving them the opportunity to grow up with this book.

This book is one of my favorites. It has many short stories that I like to read. When I was a little kid my dad would read me stories from this book. The stories were very entertaining to me. After my dad read to me I would go to bed and we would both be happy. I remember him reading stories from it to my little brother. My brother liked this story too. Neither of us read these stories very often, but we don't want to get rid of the book because it is so good. I would recommend this book for anyone.

If you have any experience with Dover publications, you'll know to expect something terrific. You won't be mistaken. Odell Shepard presents a work of such thorough, painstaking scholarship, it should be held up as a model for what scholarship ought to be. In fact, you get a pretty good sense of the history of scholarliness itself, reading this. If you find yourself sort of hypnotized by the excitement of looking over the shoulders of centuries worth of savants, I recommend you also read anything by Anthony Grafton, who writes about issues in the history of Renaissance scholarship. Another thing -- what a beautiful writing style this Odell Shepard possesses. His prose is characterized by an exacting usage of language (languages, I should say, because he apparently has a fluency with Latin, Greek, French, Italian, and probably other languages as well), and also by a taste for baroque, nineteenth century sentence structure. Really beautiful stuff. He loves his subject, and he loves the way it has been handed down through the ages. Two thumbs up.

I've been looking for a while for an all-encompassing, in-depth text on the historical significance and study of the unicorn. This book is it. It is filled to the brim with hundreds and hundreds of facts, accounts, testimonials, examinations and analyses of the unicorn throughout history. I was deeply disappointed in reading Roy Wilkinson's sappy "Are You A Unicorn?" This book compensates extensively where other books about the unicorn have failed. Especially interesting are juxtaposed conjectures and certainties of the unicorn. Wonderfully written and thoroughly researched, this is the truest guide to the Unicorn if ever there was one.

i wanted an indepth look at the history and origin of the unicorn. i got it. this book is incredibly well reaserched and very thorough. probably the best book on mythological animals i have ever seen. the only complaint i had was that the author seemed a bit taken with himself. i kept a dictionary next to the book and used it on an average of once every two to three pages. he also tended to quote from the greek and latin, and neglect to translate it. but for a serious knowledge quest or research on a paper, this is the book you want.

I recieved my first copy when it first came out! It was one of my first unicorn books, and i was just a kid. I loved it, it got me into history, mythology and helped me understand a lot about the unicorn in general.

this book is a great reference for unicorn mythology, lore, pictoral reference and anything else you can use it for. I have actually used it in my own artwork , i have done illustrations of all the unicorns in the book, as a kid i had made it a goal, the unicorn, monoceras, kirrin, abath, re'em and everything in between. it was actually a book that got me to get up and do something. it got me to study that mythical beast that is always in my dreams and near me in some way...

from the mythology of the unicorn's creation, to Jesus, to Satan to whatever else this creature has pranced though

You can tell so much how dedicated this author was, i have even found references in fiction and fantasy books about this author and his wonderful book (Unicorn Mountain). this book is a must-have, must-read book for anyone who likes unicorns. It is always in the bibliography section of unicorn books, and it itself has a great bibliography, which i love so that i can get those books!!

i recommend this book above all others if you like the rich history of the elusive and magnificent Unicorn!

This is a very academic, dry text so not especially suited to light reading. However, if you want to know unicorns inside and out, this is the book to go too. It's extremely in-depth and covers many, many myths and beliefs of unicorns across time and culture. Anyone who really wants to understand unicorns and their position in history and culture should make an effort to read this book.

This book is a rare example on how it is easy to teach the concepts, show practical examples, and summarize everything in 250 pages without relying on unnecessary phrases and words that just repeat the same idea again and again and increase the size of the book to 1000 pages. The author provides detailed explanations on the structure and functioning of distribution channels and depicts a way to effectively build a succesful channel from scratch. He goes beyond the basic concepts to show additional and important information on antitrust laws and international distribution and competition.

I would recommend reading this book and keeping it as one of your reference books to consult whenever you're up to consider changes in the distribution system that arise because of competitive pressures, changes in customer behavior, or new product launches.

Invaluable for sales managers

Tremendously useful for managers in professional, relationship-based selling. Neil Rackham, a behavioral researcher, re-wrote basic sales training with his first work, SPIN Selling. In my work with a Fortune 500 medical device company, I have interacted with many sales managers. Although successful as sales performers, many of them did not understand how their roles changed, and were reluctant to become coach and developer of their sales teams. Rackham provides great insight in this book, distinguishing between efficiency and effectiveness, and cautioning against the temptation to simply be a "closer" or "supersalesman," without providing the feedback to help members of the sales team become more effective for themselves. Part of this is a lack of deep knowledge of both what and how to coach, which this book provides to a great degree. While there are many worthwhile books for salespeople and sales managers, this one is succinct and practical. Read this, along with Daniel Goleman's work on Emotional Intelligence; put both into practice and you will be ready to have a positive impact on the success and the careers of those you are privileged to lead.

Are you running sales for a company that sell systems?

Review Date: 2001-01-21
If the answer to this question is yes, than this book will be of great use to you. Being responsible for a sales team of a company that sells systems this book finally made me realize the difference between sales and sales.

Many of the other books on the subject describe strategies how to open or how to close opportunities. In my world a customer kicks me out of the door if I would try to close him in the 1st or 2nd call.

Mr Rackham described in a very understandable language what it takes to run a sales team involved in selling systems with a high ASP and a >6 month sales cycle. After reading the book I understood why some things worked and others didn't. As a result I was able to put a strategy together on how to increase the sales and how/who to hire to extend my team.

I feel like I was given the keys to the secret kingdom of strategic sales.

Although still in implementation I feel great to have now at least an idea how to run my business where previously I was working from quarter-end to quarter-end trying to make the number.

One improvement would be for the authors to use a little more humor. I am a firm believer that a little fun helps to keep you going from page to page....

Excellent Book on the Process of Large Sales
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-03
The basis of this book is years of research that the author and his colleagues have done around the selling process. I, being an info junkie, loved all of the statistics as well as the antidotes. Learning about the distinction between large and small sales and how the approach required to be successful differed for each was invaluable. The four stages of the sales process and the four types of SPIN questions was also well worth the price of the book (and more). On the flip side, while the book is quite packed with process tips - it is quite light on actual techniques. I found the part on objection handling and closing particularly sparse - although his theory is that if you do the rest of the process right, the deal will basically close itself. This is a bit naïve when facing a senior executive who has several alternatives and will usually shop around, even dangling your solutions in front of the competition. But all-in-all, this book is well worth the money and the time invested in reading/studying and applying its concepts.

Selling Smarter Is Key to Managing Major Sales
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2002-05-15
Neil Rackham and Richard Ruff systematically explore sales productivity and its two components: sales efficiency and sales effectiveness. Rackham and Ruff first demonstrate with panache that selling smarter and not selling harder is key to optimizing the effectiveness of salespeople in large sales once they have established contact with their customers or prospects. Activity management to boost complex sales calls often has serious side effects that can eventually generate a negative return on the investment made for that purpose. Furthermore, Rackham and Ruff convincingly show which sales roles successful sales managers can adopt without undermining the stature and credibility of salespersons towards their customers or prospects. Rackham and Ruff then explore three types of analyses that sales managers can use to identify the skills and ability that their top performers display in their relationship with their customers or prospects. Once sales managers have clearly identified the skills and ability of these top performers, they can develop an action plan for coaching the rest of their sales force. Rackham and Ruff methodically examine strategy coaching, skills coaching, and their respective challenges. In addition, Rackham and Ruff examine the key motivating role that successful sales managers can have in boosting the sales productivity of their respective team. More specifically, Rackham and Ruff explore the effectiveness of setting targets, financial and non-financial incentives, and other motivational tools in boosting sales performance. Finally, Rackham and Ruff wrap up their analysis of managing major sales with a case study built on their research to put the concepts mentioned above into practice for the benefit of their audience. Both sales managers and salespersons can benefit from reading this in-depth account of how to best manage complex sales for their mutual benefit.

I would complement it with a book that I have recently read: Heads In Beds - hospitality and tourism Marketig by Ivo Raza. This is very practical and covers the areas that are missing from Kotler's textbook like Loyalty marketing, COOP with Touroperators, targeting travel agents, creating promotional materials, development, etc. Combined, both books truly give a complete overview of the complex travel indutry and should be the foundation for people studying or working in travel and tourism.

Jim Drummond's latest book, "Marketing's 10 Deadly Sins," is a must-read for any business looking to differentiate themselves, regardless of industry or market position. In the same style as Seth Godin and Guy Kawasaki, Jim Drummond captures his audience with a light touch and strong sense of humor.

Many books on the current business how-to shelves focus on the How-To ... rather than the How-NOT-To. One of this book's Rules of Thumb regarding customer retention is "The closer to the front lines, the better the view." This may also apply to the author as he brings us to the front lines through his collection of case studies and experiences that illustrate exactly what companies should NOT do. For each, he provides a simple and effective avoidance strategy -- guidelines for corrective action that can be executed at any level in any organization. And hopefully we are still all open-minded enough to learn from the mistakes of others!

Not only is this a quick and fun read, but it stretches out beyond the typical marketing hype. For example, the author writes: "If you cannot dominate, compete or succeed in a niche, create one of your own." Compelling and challenging advice for anyone trying to develop more of an entrepreneurial approach within their business.

We've just placed this title on our recommended reading list for our entrepreneurship students -- and I would recommend you add it to your reading list as well.

"Marketing's 10 Deadly Sins" is a real page-turner. For virtually anyone involved in marketing, advertising, or business in general, it's a "must read". Once you start, you won't put it down. The combination of object lessons and "real world" applications and examples makes the book not only informative, but a fast-paced, enjoyable experience. Oh, by the way, that flat spot on my forehead is from the many "I knew that" moments contained in the book. Very refreshing, indeed!

Marketing's 10 Deadly Sins packs a ton of thought-provoking ideas into 181 pages !! I have spent my career measuring customer satisfaction for many of the companies Mr. Drummond uses as examples and I can assure you that his advice is right on the money. The Key Ideas outlined in his book can be held up for positive comparison to companies who do well (so say their customers) and identification of why other companies do not do well (so says their defecting customers). If you are a seasoned business person, this book serves as a reminder to lift your head from your reports and to see your products and services from your customers' perception. If you are a student, you will be served well by learning to avoid the 10 Deadly Sins.

Mass Affluence complements The Dollarization Discipline (Fox and Gregory)by explaining the emotional needs of today's mass-market customer (the end-user to our broadcaster customers). Put the two together to see how product development and sales should work in the coming decade.

A Marketing Book Than Can Make a Difference

It's not just the rich who are getting richer; it's also a broad swath of some 22 million U.S. households who have gained significant levels of wealth, income and discretionary spending over the past 30 years. In a meticulously well-researched and well-written marketing best seller, researchers Paul Nunes and Brian Johnson document the phenomenon of mass affluence. They then describe the tremendous opportunities marketers have in crafting innovative new products and services to serve the top 20 percent of households that have some 60 percent of the nation's discretionary spending power.

The timing of this important work could not be better for retailers and brands struggling to increase share and margins in a Darwinian marketplace. I've been involved in consumer marketing for more than twenty years and I've seen only a handful of marketing books that can really make a difference. "Mass Affluence" is one of them. We were so impressed with the book that we bought copies for all our associates. I highly recommend it.

Ideas you can use to reach affluent customers

So many books about marketing or business are long on high-minded concepts, but very short on ideas you can use when you go to work the next day. Mass Affluence happily breaks that mold and offers up useful ideas in almost every chapter.

Nunes does a great job of breaking down how to approach the large demographic of relatively wealthy consumers into different functional areas and makes a chapter out of each. He explains how something, like billing, was typically done in the past and how it should be handled now. Beyond that, Nunes has found pertinent real-world examples of every concept he discusses and gets helpful input from the business people out using the strategies on a day-to-day basis.

The result of all Nunes work (I'm sure it would've been easier to write the book without running down real-world examples) is a highly practical guide to setting up or improving upon a business that caters to wealthy, but not mega-rich, customers.

Highly recommended.

A collaboration between Paul F. Nunes (Executive Research Fellow at the Accenture Institute for High Performance Business in Wellesley, Massachusetts) and Brian A. Johnson (Senior Research analyst at the New York City based investment research and management firm of Sanford C. Bernstein & Company), Mass Affluence: 7 New Rules Of Marketing To Today's Consumer reveals that there is a pendulum swing in marketing from "one-to-one" customer strategies back to mass marketing. But there's a problem -- Today's more affluent but cautious consumers aren't responding to the strategies that worked with their middle-class predecessors. Mass Affluence lays out seven new rules of mass marketing specifically directed for use with the increasingly affluent populace and shows how innovative companies are implementing these novel strategies with high-end products that fill a heretofore ignored middle-ground in ordinary product categories ranging from clothing, to oral care, to house hold cleaning, and more. A ground-breaking, seminal work, Mass Affluence should be considered mandatory reading by any corporate manager charged with the responsibility of marketing his company's services or products in today's increasingly volatile, global, and competitive marketplace.

There are zillions of books out there on marketing moderate to high end items, most of them repeating the same old principles (yawn). You certainly don't need to waste your time or money on those.
Happily, this one is different, showing sellers how to reach the elusive buyers who may fall somewhere between high end and moderate end...perhaps prefering items that fall somewhere between the High end of Moderately priced...or, if you like, the low end of Luxury. They'll spend plenty...but they have definite needs.
This book shows sellers how to appeal to those needs and to market the same (or similar) items in a way to appeal to diverse buyers.
By the way, it is always a plus when a publisher takes advantage of the "Look Inside the Book" feature on Amazon - and this publisher does. So don't take my word on the benefits of this book. Take a look at a sample page or two and see if it appeals to you.
I will add that there is a LOT of info crammed into this book and I learned quite a bit. I'd also recommend Let Them Eat Cake.

When it says 'master class' it means that it won't tell you what to think but it will teach you how to think, which is much more enduring and useful. Every planner I know should read this and inwardly digest its perennial wisdom.

A must read

Stephen King was one of the two fathers of account planning. Despite many of these papers being over 30 years old, they have never been a more pertinent reminder about how to think about creating powerful brands and communication, and the role that ad agencies can play. It's proof that sometimes when trying to find a path forwards it's useful to look at the past. A must read for anyone in the communications industry.

A Master Class in Brand Planning is an invaluable, long over-due introduction to the writings of Stephen King for all marketers in the United States. King, a pioneer in account planning in the UK, spent his career teaching his colleagues, his clients and countless fans how brands work, how to approach brands and importantly how to sustain brands. The brilliance of this compilation of his work is the addition of contemporary commentaries by today's leading thinkers about advertising, marketing and brands. They make this book as relevant and timely as the latest blog on brands. A must-read for people starting out in the business, people building and selling brands, and people teaching marketing in business schools.

Enduring jewels from the King!

Stephen King's writings, as most reviewers acknowledge, are as relevant and stimulating today as they were when he first published them. Between the lines, however, one can still detect the humor and irreverence which were King hallmarks. Stephen was relentlessly rigorous in his approach to brand planning, but at the same time was disarmingly charming and witty. You'll find these qualities here as well.

In an age when desires for instant insights attract attention to short cuts, Stephen King will give 'real planners' tools that require thoroughness and hard work, but which lead to far richer and more rewarding results over time. Brands he touched in his lifetime, and people he inspired, still reign all over the world!

It's a treasure trove, indeed!

Long live the King!
