As soon as I found this book in a used book store, I knew I needed to buy it. I love all the images and reading through all the angel names. Whenever I feel like the world is rapidly becoming overwhelming, I sit down with "Visions of Angels" and it helps to restore my balance. I highly recommend it - a coffee table book, it is not!

My favorite is that of "JASON, 1995" by Kelly Grider which depicts a male angel portrayed in a classic 19th century european romantic style. My second favorite is "Descending Angel" which also appears on the cover.

This is one beautiful and thought provoking book.

I am not a big fan of "coffee table" books. They gather more dust than the table, but this book demands attention. I find myself picking it up and contemplating the images. They are all deserving of multiple viewings - they are ART. The best image from Thursday may become hated on Wednesday because of the emotions generated by me, combined with the photo. I encourage all to pick up the book and I challenge you to the challenge of contemplation. Enjoy the ride.

Before I opened this book I knew virtually nothing about website development and design. A couple hours later I knew the basics and the questions to ask about website development. This book is designed to de-mystify the website process and help you choose an ethical, honest developer that you can work with to achieve the website you want. It also guides you on developing your own website. It breaks down the actual costs, teaches you how not to get ripped off and allows you to make informed decisions. The $25.00 cost may very well save you thousands. Not only is Website 411 a must read, it should be your first read.

Mr. Elliott has written a concise and helpful book for any business owner looking to establish an Internet presence. His writing style leaves out the tech jargon and uses plain language so that a newcomer to the web will understand his points with ease.

Given the amount of sales hype and inflated promises that exist in the world of web development, Mr. Elliott's book is a breath of fresh air. Highly recommended as I found it very helpful!

Before I share my opinion, I will first qualify it. I am a web site professional. I work mostly with traditional design, but I sometimes recommend various turnkey packages. I have been in the Internet industry for about 11 years. My business (which I founded in 1997) has consulted a portfolio of over 4200 clients and provided service to over 2300 web projects ranging from site development to search engine marketing. Needless to say, I lend a critical eye to any new book on the topic of web sites.

That said, I found Website 411 to be an INCREDIBLY VALUABLE resource. It is a book written to help business leaders make informed decisions, yet I have also found it to be an EXCEPTIONALLY USEFUL tool in my role as a web site service provider and consultant. It provides CREDIBLE, SUBSTANTIATED, and OBJECTIVE information to consumers (web site clients) in a way that is straightforward and easy to understand. It is evident that the author has INSIGHTFUL and RELEVANT professional experience with the subjects of web design, search engines, web usability, and marketing. Probably the most significant detail, however, is the simplicity with which these topics are conveyed in plain language (no computer jargon) so that non-technical business people can understand what they need to know. This USER-FRIENDLY book is a worthwhile resource for both the web site customer AND the web site professional.

As such, I have been successful in fulfilling two clients' needs by simply bookmarking a section of the book and asking them to read it. In short order, their questions were satisfied, saving everyone time and money in the consulting process. I will be keeping my copy of this book close at hand in my future consultations. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that every web site shopper reads it, and that every web site professional references it to their clients.

The Wise Encyclopedia of Cookery

As with many encyclopedias, topics in this highly entertaining and informative text on cooking seem to be composed by different contributors, for depth, view and perspective seems to vary significantly from topic to topic . As referred to also by others here below, mine, too, was my mother's--1948 with green cloth hardcover.

"Beer"? It gives the history back before ancient Egypt. The "Minestrone soup" recipe calls for "vermicelli or other paste", which of course we would now call pasta. A nice variation on ordinary meatloaf--"frosted" in a one-inch layer of golden-baked mashed potatoes.

How to buy different cuts of meat, where certain recipes originated--the history of "ice cream"--all make for enjoyable and entertaining reading.

Just reading the backgrounds of particular dishes brings a whole new perspective, depth and appreciation to the whole dining experience--from planning and shopping to perparing and enjoying the result with family and friends. This is a wonderful addition to any kitchen and homemaker's library.

Best, Most-Informative Cookbook I've ever seen!

I love this cook book! Any time I get a notion to cook something, be it a pumpkin pie or a pot roast, all I have to do is take out "The Wise Encyclopedia of Cookery," look up the dish by alphabetical order and there it is... Not only recipes, but also information about tools to use, techniques, and a bit of history. A few weeks ago I needed to make a dessert for a pot-luck function and I needed to do it fast with ingredients I had on hand. I looked around and found a whole bunch of odd pieces of bread in the freezer and thought, "bread pudding!" I knew I could count on the Wise Encyclopedia to give me an excellent recipe. Not only did they have several bread pudding recipes, but also recipes for simple sauces to go with it. I made the vanilla sauce. It was wonderful and a total hit! People were asking if it was an old family recipe. In a way, it is. The copy of the book I have is actually my mother's, and when I was a small child, I thought that the woman on the cover was my mother, who bares a strong resemblance, cooking in our kitchen, which looked very similar to the one pictured.

If you don't have much space in your kitchen or don't want it cluttered with a lot of cookbooks, this is the one to get. It has everything anyone could ever possibly need all in one volume.

A favorite of our family!

My love for this book stems not just from its wealth of content. The Wise Encyclopedia of Cookery was often a guest at our dinner table when I was growing up, so there are fond memories there too.

My mother is a fantastic cook, and I'd often bombard my folks with questions about food during dinner. Their usual response: "Look it up!" and that only meant one thing, "Look it up in Wise."

This book was the source of often fascinating information, as well as hours of fun - and even laughter - for our family. The laughter came because I could never put it down! It seemed that every time I turned to it for an answer, it would never be so easy as just getting the answer, and that's that. This book is so well cross-referenced, I'd inevitably get stuck in it for what seemed like hours (and often probably was) following all the "which see" and "see also" references. I used to call it the bane of my existence, but in truth, I always enjoyed it - and I learned several new things each time I opened it.

Now in my mid-thirtys, I find I really miss having this book around, and would love to own one. I can't understand why they let this go out of print! Mom's copy is so old and well-loved it's falling apart, but regardless of it's condition, I've told my family that when it comes time to fight over mom's extensive cookbook collection, The Wise Encyclopedia of Cookery is not up for grabs - it's mine. After all, I earned it!

This is THE definitive cooking manual for all people who cook, want to cook, are thinking of learning to cook...or eat! Regardless of what information you need, whether you're just beginning or a seasoned chef, this treasure has something in it for you.

This tome comes complete with detailed instructions for everything you could possibly need from drawing and quartering a whole cow to building a simple campfire or setting up a kitchen more efficiently; there are also detailed formal place setting diagrams, pots and pan buying guide, and instructions on how to properly cure that new cast iron pot or resurface mom's old one. There are wine selection tips, flatware lay out diagrams, illustrations of herbs and obscure fruits and vegetables, and full definitions and descriptions of all kinds of serving pieces.

There are base recipes for every possible dish, and many thousands of specialty recipes. Within are definitions of herbs, procedures, and techniques. There are illustrations, directions, and personal advice from the author.

I, too, grew up with this book in my mother's kitchen. Her mother had the 1930's edition which had a green cloth cover. Mama had the trusty "modernized" orange one, which I also have. I found mine here at Amazon.com for $15. While I remember well her using her Wise, my recommendation does not stem from any feelings of nostalgia. There simply IS no better cook book in the world, before this one, or since.

Everything you need is in this book.

My mother had this book when I was growing up. She used it to look up nutritional values of foods, recipes, diet information, and other "how-to's." When I got married, I found one of my own. This cookbook helped me learn about meal prep, tableware, preserving, food values and so much more. It has never failed me and if I had to pick only one cookbook, this would be it. It is such an all-inclusive and well-organized book, it still surprises me with information after over 25 years. I wish it were still in print - I'd give one to my daughter-in-law!

I was not prepared for the dramatic change in my outlook and self-awareness after I read Wokini. I couldn't put it down, and I even took notes. Wokini answers the who, what, where, why, when, and how, of happiness. I bought extra copies to give to my family and friends, and I hope they pass thir copies along to their loved ones. Wokini is such an easy book to read. The spiritual journey described in the book carried you from place to place looking for not only answers but questions.

By chance, I found this book in my local library, read it and had a life change. Today while looking up Nicholas Sparks I find that Wokini is in print once again. Life is good! This book will change your whole attitude and outlook on life. It begins by breaking down the old ideas (lies) about what happiness is and is not. It follows with a day by day path on how to achieve true happiness. A great book to give and to keep!

When my grandmother died I had to go through her things, and I found not one but two copies of this book. Out of curiosity I read it, and was very moved and at the same time felt enlightened. I really wish that I could talk to her about this story, and regret that I didn't know her well enough, because anyone who appreciates this story is on the right path as far as I'm concerned. I am a Christian and I am not Native American, but those things really don't matter as the only thing you need to have when reading this is your desire to search, to learn more of yourself and the world. You will get out of this book much more than you spend on it!

I can't help but wonder who the target audience is/was intended for this book. At times it read very smoothly; other times I felt like it was written in an uncreative/predictable manner. It made a lot of good points; I valued a lot of the lessons and advice. I just felt like the whole story about David, the presence of his sister's spirit, etc could have been left out and it would have been just as good. I learned quite a bit; I just wasn't awed. I think there are better motivational books out there besides Wokini.

In a very clear, simple and entertaining way Billy Mills' story leads the reader to a better understanding of true happiness. At the same time he provides a little peek into Lakota beliefs and practices. The book is easy reading by children and adults alike, and will be enjoyed by both those who are interested in the Lakota and those who've looked for happiness in all the wrong places. I too hope that there will be another printing of this book. It is a sad commentary that such a delight should be lost to future generations. This is a book that I have given (and would love to continue if reprinted) as a gift to quite a few people. But, for the present, I must be satisfied with two... one for myself and one to loan out for others to read.

As a native New Yorker who formerly had a beautiful view of the World Trade Center, and now avoids looking at the painfully flat skyline every day, I have this fabulous volume to treasure instead. .............. While disappointed with the flood of tributes to the still unfathomable tragedy of 9/11, this book was a must have the moment I thumbed through for a quick cursory look. I was immediately impressed with all the gorgeous shots of the WTCs depicted in all the ways that I loved them. Shimmering in golden sunrise yellow, blinding in midday platinum steel, glowing in the ominously blue-violet dusk, and sparkling with the thousands of tiny lights that made the New York City skyline, the awesomely spectacular sight that so sadly, won't ever be the same. ................. The most wonderful thing about this book, is not only the terrific pictoral contents, with several posters included, but the informational text that accompanies it as well. If you are interested to know the complete history of the WTCs and New York City, you will see the city before the towers were built, how and by whom they were planned, the way they were built, when and why. Also covered, their effect on New York City, as well as their role in the media and Hollywood movies. Finally, you will get the brutally shocking photos of their horrible demise. Look no further for a truly complete tribute. Every single chapter goes into wonderful detail, and is accompanied by the most breathtaking photographic treasures ever seen, of these iconic masterpieces of lost architecture. Not only is this the absolute BEST book I've seen for anyone who wants to keep their memory of the WTCs alive forever, it's also one of the most reasonably priced. This volume offers a tremendous return for your dollar. It's all printed in sharp color, on thick gauge, glossy paper. There is not one page in here that will waste your time with filler. Author Pete Skinner, British born, but a longtime resident of Greenwich Village, had, like me, watched the birth of the World Trade Center, built and completed in 1973, and like me, watched it die. People all over the world felt the pain of this unprecedented loss, but those of us who were lucky enough to live among the Twin Towers for their retrospectively short lifespan, will treasure this book. ................... If you are looking for a book about the entire gamut of events that took place in New York, Washington DC, and Pennsylvania, you may not find all of what you're looking for here. However, if you are like me, a person who will forever mourn the loss of these twin icons of prestige and success that defined the great soaring spirit of New York City, as well as the tragic loss of many wonderful hard-working New Yorkers who loved to work at the World Trade Center once upon a better time, then you have found the perfect tribute to a symbol of New York that will remain, forever in the American heart.

This book is the one to get, if you want fantastic photos, interesting prose, and just an overall great pictoral commemoration of the World Trade Center, which was destroyed in the horrific terrorist attacks of September 11.

With the War on Terror continuing, sometimes it is good to be reminded of why we are fighting and what it's all for. This book will bring the memories (and the resolve) flooding back.

An excellent tribute at a great price. Five stars!

The history of the WTC is traced from black and white photos and simple text regarding its design and architecture through the chilling events of 9/11. I have to say that the color photos of 9/11 capture the events totally and will leave you breathless.

I have purchased 6 copies of this book for family and friends and think it is the best WTC book out there.

I proudly keep a copy on my coffee table and leaf through it often and remember the beautiful buildings I once marveled at and loved.

I live in the Midwest (have never visited NY) but saw a review of this book on a website. I just had to have it so I ordered the book from Amazon.com. I received the book late yesterday afternoon. The pictures and information contained in the book are truly amazing. It is amazing to see what Lower Manhattan looked like before the WTC was built. The pictures of the various models of WTC that were built. There are pictures of the construction of the twin towers. The book has some very nice posters of the WTC and New York skyline. There are many pictures taken on September 11th and in the days following. This book is a must-have for those who are interested in the World Trade Center. It's truly a remarkable book.

What an eye-opening pleasure to find a book so direct and plain-talking and generous with its genuinely practical advice. If you're raising money, you'll learn here how to make targeted, carefully crafted appeals that produce results. If you're giving money or time, this book works in reverse to help you choose intelligently how to help others do their good works.

I love this book; It is easy to read, simple and contains valuable information and business development tools inside that REALLY helped me improve my business.

John opened my eyes about an essential concept: How to satisfy my customers. In addition, I used the action plan (offered in the book) in my business, and it worked!

This book is A SUCCESS!

I first read this great book in January 1999. Since then, I've made all colleagues across my organization go through it.

The book is a fresh bath of common sense. It combines advanced strategic thinking on how to turn your customers into (as some author says) "raving fans". It also covers hundreds of tactical ideas, from planning to implementation, from hiring the right people to managing the creation of a true customer-centered culture.

I'm not afraid to say this is the very best book on customer service I've read in my life. You can't go wrong with it. John Tschohl is, in fact, the customer service guru!

Just 3 words for you: buy it now.

I also had the privilege to attend a couple of years ago a full-day seminar with the author in Costa Rica. The seminar -sponsored by the Aymara Group-, was the best of the best. Using the ideas of this book (I strongly recommend chapter two: At The Beginning it Was... The Plan!) my firm has DOUBLED customer retention rates.

Tschohl's approaches service as a proffit-making tool. Chapter one includes a powerful and pragmatic system to measure what poor service is costing you. You won't believe it.

By all means, have your full executive team read this book.

My five stars are for the performance and the book. All opera recordings should come in this format. But the cd copies are bad and will be short-lived, they easily loose their coating.

Epic - Classic - Masterpiece - BRAVO!!!!!

I bought this as my first piece from the Black Dog Library in preparation for seeing the Vancouver BC Operas production in 2002. Black Dog Library is a must for everyone going to see an opera. Get this, listen to it, fall in love with the music and then see this opera live if you ever get the chance. This is opera at its best. After seeing the production live, I can't wait to see it again. And by listening to the cd's I can bring it right back to my mind and my heart.

Bravo Giuseppe, Bravo......

This series is a wonderful experience for new opera fans.

Wow!! Wow!! O my God! I just heard this album and my jaw dropped. Why it so many critic snub this recording ? It's the best Aida on record. I think it has to do with the fact it's very rare and more of a collector's piece as well overshadowed by more popular editions- i.e. Placido Domingo/Leontine Price, Jon Vickers..Pavoratti..Montserrat Caballe etc. But the cast in this album can not be more perfect. Birgit Nilsson was a grand lady of the opera- with a voice that cut through great orchestras, with dramatic integrity in her stage performances (she was as much as an actress as she was a singer and in this way she was like Maria Callas). It is true that she is far more recognized for her Wagner heroines- she is the best Isolde and Brunhilde, but her Wagnerian voice, so high, so powerful, is perfect for such diva roles as Aida. Verdi wrote the role for soprano di forzas which Birgit Nillson delivers with electrifying prowess. She was trained in Italian as well, which people seem to forget. Her Italian voice is rich, powerful, with a high top and generous bottom. She gets into characters with passionate intensity as well. Has anyone ever heard Turandot ? It's the best! So intense and powerful. And her Tosca is breathtaking. She also sang in Mozart's Don Giovanni starred opposite Leontine Price and the famous bass Cesare Siepi in that one. She can do the Italian roles as good as the rest of them!! There is also her powerful interpretation of Turandot and Tosca. So there you have it. Her Italian was as dynamic as her German. Franco Corelli is an awesome Radames, with hot-blooded, masculine energy and lyrical moments of love and grief. He can be a tough guy and a sensitive lover. "Celeste Aida" is superbly done, even if not sung as written. His Tomb Scene at the end is incredible. Grace Bumbry is the best Amneris, and she sang the role numerous times which made her an expert on it. She has a dignity of her own in the role and she is not as scary or bitchy as Rita Gorr's interpretation. Bumbry's perfect. You can also hear her as Amneris in the Leontine Price/Placido Domingo version conducted by Erich Leinsdorf. This is truly a great recording and will have you wanting to get other recordings of its amazing lead singers. Certainly Franco Corelli is a magnet of opera lovers with his excellent artistry. He sang with Birgit Nilsson in the greatest operas of their careers- Puccini's Turandot and Tosca which are also available at Amazon.com and I strongly urge you seek them out. Their Aida is mind-blowing.

The sound to this recording been digitally remastered from the old LP and sound fresh, powerful and moving. The Black Dog Opera Library series offers the best in opera to a beginner who takes interest in the world of opera or to fans who are already converted. It does more for the novice, however. My first of these "cd-books" was Verdi's La Traviata starring Beverly Sills and Nicolai Gedda. This was indeed a perfect performance. This was followed by Bizet's Carmen starring Jon Vickers and Grace Bumbry..another winner! Then came Mozart's Magic Flute starring Peter Schreir, Anneliese Rothenberger, Kurt Moll, Walter Berry and Edda Moser. This is the best Magic Flute out there. Indeed, all the recordings on this series are of the highest calibre. This book comes with the libretto, pictures of Aidas in the past, and bios on Corelli, Nilsson and Bumbry. Go out and get it today!!!

Brilliant voices of Birgit Nilsson, Franco Corelli with Orchestra e Coro Del Teatro dell' Opera di Roma under Zubin Mehta. A marvelous studio recording without audience noises. A number of stage photos of major performances and introduction of Verdi and the writing of AIDA. Two CD's with the complete opera with complete libretto in Italian and English. A great value. A must-have.

This book was given to me by a friend; I had her search everywhere for it. Upon a few days after receiving it, I knew her search had not been in vain. This is a marvelous book of poetry with some interesting aspects on life, love and the like.

The poetry in "Ain't I A Woman" presents a wide range of experience and emotion. This is not a book of pretty poems. It is a series of moans, cries and hurrahs from the heart. Jenny Joseph's wonderful "Warning" ("When I am an old woman I shall wear purple")suggests from page one that here will be poems with attitude. They do not disappoint. I like this book very much.

Classic and modern women's poetry from around the world.

This is one of the best anthologies of poetry I've ever found. The purpose: Bring together words from women of all cultures, all ages, all corners of the world. Here are young women, old women, fat women, starving women, lives touched by peace, war, spiritual joy, physical abuse, passion, motherhood, loss. There are beautiful, haunting words here. There are cold, hard, brutal images here. If you're a woman who complains about feminists, please read this book and try to understand what women have had to go through so that you could be where you are today: free to complain. If only to have a copy of Sojourner Truth's immortal "Ain't I a Woman?" speech from 1852, this book would be worth the price. Read this book for the incredible messages here. You will be moved.

Ain't I a Woman was not a surprise to me. It is full of beautiful works of art. This book is full of voices of many different women, with different lives, different backgrounds but from their voices you can feel their strength and each voice in that book can add to your self-esteem and make you feel stronger about yourself as a women with every poem. Although some poems are not as powerful as others, their messages are still there: "I lived, I saw, I loved, I struggled, I died, but most importantly I felt, felt what life was like and from my words you might learn how it really is to be a woman". This book should be read by anyone who has time get lost in its poetry. I personally read a piece of the book everyday at work and I am glad that I made the time. There are many different writers in this book and I recommend reading different works from those authors as well.

This book obtains its title from Sojourner Truth's incomparable speech in 1851, and for the most part is brilliant and moving. My main complaint is that it focuses on the physical (sex, childbirth, etc.) so much that it could be classified as erotic poetry instead of a full exploration of womanhood. However, look for amazing cultural and chronological diversity in authors, and refreshing humor in poems like "Sho nuff." The development of the book is thematic, according to stages of life by also by subject. Series show different visions of famous women such as Jezebel, Cleopatra, and Medusa, which ends with a hilarious conversation between Medusa and Eve. The poems in this collection really strike - not everyone will like everything, but I'm sure everyone will find SOMETHING in here that really gets their attention. My personal favorite is "Witch." There are dozens of poems in here, enough to make the book seem very long, but since no poem is longer than two pages, I garantee you won't get bored.
