I read the book Miracle on 34th Street by, Valentine Davies. It was a fabulous Christmas fiction book. The main message or theme that I got from the book was anythings possible-you just have to believe.
Doris Walker is in charge of running the Macys Day Parade, which takes place on Thanksgiving Day. When her Santa Clause slacks off last minute she finds Kris Kringle and hires him to do the job. Kris does an amazing job. The only bothersome thing is he really and truly believes that he is Kris Kringle-Santa Clause. Doris doesnt believe him, and thinks he might be insane. Along with Doris not believing in Santa Clause, nor does her 6 year old daughter Susan. Kris however wants to change that, he wants to make them believe..he believes Christmas is all about believing. Doris and her boss think Mr. Kringle is insane so they send him to a mental institution. Mr. Kringle then worries-what is going to happen with Christmas? How could he disappoint millions of kids all over the world? He some how has to find a way to save Christmas!
I loved the book. I read it around Christmas which seemed to make the book even better. It was a memorable book that I will remember constantly throughout the holiday season. It was so good I might read it every year between Thanksgiving and Christmas. It would be nice to have a tradition like that.
This book didnt really relate to my Christmas Holiday Season. As a child I always believed in Santa unlike Susan did. My parents encouraged the belief of Christmas and Santa Clause until my brother and I started questioning and figuring things out. Still till this day I believe Christmas was always better when I was young and believed. It made the Holiday Season seem so magical.
Read Miracle on 34th Street to see if Susans Christmas was magical!

Wow! I love this book... and even now as 18 I still read this book to get me into that "Christmas spirit" I so desperately want to be in... I read this book every year it's one of my regulars on my holiday reading list.

Valentine Davies weaves such an impressive story that it will make the most skeptical child believe and it will make us that no longer can- wish we could. This is simply the perfect holiday story- one a parent could read to a child before they go to sleep or a story that a moderate second grade reader could read on their own without any difficulty...

I love reading this more than I do watching the classic version of the movie for Valentine Davies makes this book more magical than the movie could ever hope to be. All in all if you want to buy a book for the holidays- for someone on your shopping list this is definately one to buy! Or even own for yourself!

Doris Walker works at Macy's. She's in charge of choosing people to be in the parade, but when her Santa Claus shows up drunk she fires him and hires Kris Kringle on the spot. Kris believes he's Santa Claus, and Doris not believing in anything ignores his insistent opinion.

Of course, Doris has her 6 year old daughter Susan thinking there's no Santa Claus either, and Kris makes sure he changes the little girls mind. But trouble begins when he is admitted to Bellevue, a mental institution, and now with the help of his friend Fred, he must try to get out or Christmas will be ruined for everyone. Especially little Susan.

This book is truly wonderful, and it shows that if you just believe anything is possible.

I'm so glad someone finally wrote this book! It's all here -- history, myth, spells your kitty can help you perform, info about the different breeds, touching stories by cat "parents" whose kitties showed psychic abilities, interesting scientific facts about cat behaviour, photographs of exotic cats, folktales, cat deities, etc. Only one thing I didn't like. Was it really ncessary to tell us about cat persecutions and actually show us a picture, albeit an old one from some old horrible time, but, you know, to show us? The truth is harsh and I didn't really want to see a chapter on that in a book I love so much. But, that was only one chapter and the rest of the book is truly loveable. Thank you, DJ Conway, for writing about our furry little bundles of love :)

This book is a great photo collection, filled with superb driver profiles and historical information. However, very often, the book is flat-out wrong. Photographs are sorted into incorrect years, races and tracks are misidentified. No, Junior Johnson did not own the #44 Piedmont car. No, Mark Martin did not drive a 1995 Thunderbird in 1999 at Watkins Glen. No, North Wilkesboro is not in New Hampshire. Every mistake you spot makes you question the integrity of the rest of the book that much more.

But great pictures.

A real bargain for NASCAR fans

This is an outstanding book, in three ways.

First, it is a comprehensive history of NASCAR from its earliest days, told in short essays and lots of great pictures. There are complete season statistics, point race summaries, etc. There is literally no where else one can find this sort of information.

Second, the book is entertaining. It's not easy to do the kind of in-depth scholarship that underlies this book and make it interesting. That's what the author does. It's literally a page-turner with a gripping narrative.

Third, the book is a very high-quality production. It's a large-format, coffee-table book, the pages are heavy, glossy paper, the binding is extremely sturdy, and the pictures are sharp. This is one of those books that just feels good in your hands, if that makes any sense.

In summary, this is THE book for any NASCAR fan. I'm very happy I bought it, and I think it's a tremendous bargain.

I got this today as a gift from my nephew in TX. I have read it with the exception the 2 pages of words only which are before each decade without putting it down. I'll read them tomorrow. It begins with a page of Before NASCAR and then goes yearly from 1947 through 2004. The page devoted to the each year has more information then some wordy books. The pictures are fabulous. I will definitely give this to my friends who like NASCAR in place of some I have given in the past.
It is well worth the money spent.
Enjoy!

A hard-core history of NASCAR, from early pre-NASCAR days through modern day racing. This book is structured by year, with complete timelines and highlights of each season, often accompanied by photographs. If you are a new NASCAR fan but lack a background in the history of the sport, then this is a "must have" book for you. Once you learn the history of this sport, you will have a greater appreciation for NASCAR and today's drivers.

One solid piece of work.

I never buy NASCAR books. Ever. Generally they are cheap, poorly written and focus on one or two drivers (can you say Dale Jr? I knew you could). How much fun is that? And please tell me why I'd want to pay for that?

Well, I happened to cruise the bargain bin at the local superchain bookstore, and this happened to catch my eye. I did say I never bought the books, to be sure, but I'm pretty regular about flipping through them to see if just maybe I want it. This one's a keeper, to be sure.

This book covers everything from the early (EARLY) days of NASCAR to the 2003 season. Plenty of pictures, good sidebar features, season highlights, and in the back year-by-year (and race-by-race, I may add) stats. Awesome.

If you enjoy NASCAR, this book is for you. Period.

Nirvana was an iconic album of the alternative rock genre. "Classic Rock Albums: Nevermind Nirvana" is just short of the music CD itself in fully understanding the album that made the grunge movement of the early nineties so memorable. Taking a look at the early days of Nirvana's career complete with black and white photographs of the band's early days, information on recording sessions, and information on each track of the million selling album. "Classic Rock Albums: Nevermind Nirvana" is an absolute must have for any Nirvana fan who can't get enough of trivia for the group.

This book gives an excellent account of what led to the great CD we now know as Nevermind. It briefly describes Nirvana's rise to stardom and gives a glimpse into the personalities of the members, but is at its best in describing how the actual production of the album went. Using numerous sources, the author lets us listen to Nevermind in a completely different way. The only downside is that it is a relatively short work, and I left wanting more

This is an excellent book on Nirvana, and it is too sad that it is out-of-print. It contains important interviews and write-ups from several pop culture mags of that era on the band--on performances--on their overall views...

Does this signal that Kurt was right: Grunge is dead?

Well, perhaps dead but not yet interred into the earth.

Yeah, yeah, it's really lame to buy a book about them and all, but this isn't just another stupid ripoff fan book- this is really good stuff. It's funny. It's sad. It gives Courtney a chance to look less evil- I changed my mind about her because of this book. And it's not just about Kurt like most Nirvana books are- there's a good amount of stuff on Krist and the various drummers as well. Serious Nirvana fans really need to read this.

Dont but it for the art.

Norman Rockwell's Christmas book is filled with great stories, poems, and recollections of Christmas. But the real selling point...the main reason to pickup this book is the brilliant art of Norman Rockwell.

When we think Holidays...Thanksgiving, Christmas...we always want to picture ours to be as perfect, as joyful as one of Rockwell's paintings. They never are, of course, but we can still try.

Perhaps no artist ever has capture the sense of awe and wonderment of the Christmas season than Rockwell. You cannot help but smile ear-to-ear as you thumb through the pages. A Real Joy!

You're right, makada, Rick Reynolds is an excellent performer whose work was both intensely meaningful and hilarious. Few shows I've seen use personal autobiography, pathos and humor together to such startling and dramatic effect.

I too was turned on to Reynolds 15 years ago when his 90-minute TV special came out, a magnificent program. I have the whole show on videocasette and through the years have shared it with old friends and new friends time and time again, because it's that orginal and that entertaining. It's truly unlike any comedy performance you will see or hear today. And it's a shame the video of this performance is not generally available, and that Reynolds is not enjoying popularity right now on a wide scale. I hope he does regain the spotlight; this is truly comedy at its finest (and I, like Reynolds, try not to exaggerate!). Find this concert if you can, and enjoy.

I was introduced to Rick Reynold's via his Showtime special in the 90's and have loved him ever since. Gah-gah over Rick much? I am. I've begged Showtime to play his show again, to sell it on DVD, just make it available! Please. So even if this is just audio and a little pricey, it's worth having in your library.

Listening to Rick Reynold's unique brand of comedy, I'm always reminded of Peter O'Toole's character in the Earl of Gurney in The Ruling Class. (Wait for it.) He rode around the bedroom on a tricycle believing he was Jesus Christ (which may, BTW, be where the saying 'Jesus Christ on a trike'came from...but I digress) as his bride begged him to show some dignity. The Earl answers, "Dignity has nothing to do with divinity!"

That's Rick Reynolds. Not the guy on the trike, but definitely a divine being who thumbs his nose at traditional standards of dignity. He points out the flaws in both of those D words and somehow manages to gain your respect, even if you might be a bit offended. He puts all his bumps, cuts, bruises and warts right out there for you, wrapped in his most excellent intelligence and sense of humor to prove that yes, only the truth is funny. Reynolds mocks the worst of human behavior and melts the heart with his appreciation of the frailty and goodness he sees beneath it all. He questions and studies everything and doesn't leave you wondering about his analysis of life. Reynolds is wonderfully and hilariously irreverent and thankfully unapologetic for it. His brave, unabashed approach to holding up the microscope and the mirror is still as fresh and vivid as ever. Rick Reynolds is truly divine and the only comic I've ever had the great pleasure of being obsessed with. :sigh: If you're not obsessed yet, you are missing out!

Caught Reynold's show on Showtime several years ago ...
Have been trying to track it down ever since.
It was so compelling, sharp, funny, insightful, moving. Have begged SHOWTIME to re-release it, air it again, etc. Have repeatedly searched for any news items or links to Reynolds (no, am not a stalker) indicating he would be performing somewhere.
Have been unable to even get ahold of the recording - until recently when I finally found/bought a used copy. Pure bliss listening to him again. Ten years later AGAIN laughed out loud, choked up, and immediately passed it on to others who would instantly understand and appreciate his appeal.
Worth the effort - FIND this album. Share it with friends. It withstands the test of time.
Where is Rick Reynolds? Please come back.

I have no luck with this item. Rick Reynolds did this monoloque on HBO and I thought it was one of the most unique that I've ever heard. He tells you flat out about the most awful real-life experiences and has you crying and laughing at the same time. The Eyeball joke/test is worth the price.

I ordered the audio casette a couple of years ago and while it had a patch of static on it, it was still good. I lost it, however (or maybe loaned it to someone and then forgot.) I tried to order it again from Amazon and it kept getting delayed so I cancelled it. I tried to order the CD from B&N and they twice sent me a musical cd by Roger Reynolds. So, I came back to Amazon and now ordered the audio download through Audible.com. The quality of this is absolutely horrible. It is tinny with a high level of distortion. Charging 8.95 for this is a travesty. I can hardly understand what Rick is saying. Amazon and Audible ought to be ashamed of themselves for taking money under false pretenses.

Ms Jeffers' book is, I believe, outdated. It's very entrenched in the "overcoming ill effects and mindsets of women being held back by men for so many years" kind of thinking. In honesty, I didn't finish the book because I became bored and couldn't relate to most of what she was saying, since I'm not "that kind of feminist". It didn't speak to me, but maybe there are women out there it would speak to, since we don't all come from the same perspective, so I gave it 3 stars instead of 2. I have appreciated some of Ms Jeffers other books much more, i.e. "Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway".

It allowed me to look at men through a different lens, and look beyond my negative experiences and viewpoints. In doing so I met and married my husband. He has been my gift for the past 15 years, and I found him after reading Susan Jeffer's words. You can't go wrong with this book.

This is the first self-help book about relationships that actually looks at the relationship between men and women in a POSITIVE light. Instead of taking an antagonistic view of male/female relationships and bashing the opposite sex, Susan Jeffers suggests that each of us (women and men) look within and make changes while trying to create the right relationship. She helps women see that men are more like women than not--and that we all really need the same things from a relationshp. She also encourages women to assess their current relationships and to understand what they are and are not getting from them. I met the man of my dreams while reading this book because I had my defenses down and MY HEART OPEN. I just bought two more copies for my friends. Read this book with an open mind, an open heart and a pencil. You won't be disappointed.

This book provided a good overview of lawns. There were many clear color pictures included, and the text was simple to read. I would have preferred a little more detail for the techniques described in the book. For instance, aerating was given only a paragraph or two and didn't have details on tools, spacing, or depth. This book, however, detailed information on how to read a grass seed or fertilizer label. This book is good for a novice, but if you want to get serious about your lawn, find a book with more details and that is more up to date.

Just bought a house in the winter and now its almost Summer and my lawn has been invaded by weeds and bald spots. Being a previous apartment dweller I had no idea about lawns. I searched high and low for books that would help and didn't find any that deals with the subject as simply and straight forward as this book does. Thanks to this book I now have the knowledge to replace my entire lawn, purchase the right kind of seeds and, most importantly avoid weeds.

You would think grass was the easiest thing in the world to grow. That is until you actually own your own house and you realize that this whole grass growing thing
is not exactly a picnic in the sun.

Not only can overwatering kill your grass, you can end up with all sorts of problems if you fertilize too much. We are talking about burning grass, planting the wrong grass seeds and living to see your grass take on Amazon like proportions.

I've done it all. I?ve planted the wrong grass seeds, repaired patches (successfully after purchasing this book) and learned other lessons in how to maintain a lawn.

Contents:

What Makes a Great Lawn
Lawn Care
Building A Better Lawn
Problem Solving - weeds, insects and disease.

The next time you drive by a home with a perfect lawn, you might wonder if they own this book. It sure has all the secrets for how to mow, repair and fertilize your lawn.

One thing this book taught me was to read the back of the bags of grass seed. 't grow in certain areas, or not as well. I had this whole lovely patch of Annual Bluegrass that did fine until the summer when it died out and left bare patches in the lawn. Don't even ask me about crabgrass.

Are you interested in knowing why your yard has developed fairy rings or necrotic ring spot, this book gives you hints and tips on the types of grasses that are susceptible and how you can control the problem with chemicals or by planting a different type of grass.

Before you plant a new lawn or move into a house that has one, get this book fast!

It sure helped me while I was living in my beautiful big house with the large kitchen.

Ok, so I'm not missing it too much. The yard was a lot of work. Now I relax on my deck and read books while the lawn-care guys zip along in their riding mowers. Ahh, bliss.

Make your life easier with this book. I promise you, you don't want to live without this book for two years like I did.

Essential Lawn-care book! The Best I've seen.

In the past I have always hired services to care for my lawn. This past year I decided, for a number of reasons, to do it myself. I bought a nice mower, a fertilizer spreader, and this book. The information contained in this book was extremely helpful to a novice like me. I also followed the program set forth by the fertilizer manufacturer I chose and mowed and watered according to the advice set forth in this book.

Frankly, I was shocked by how quickly my lawn improved. You have to understand that my lawn was basically dead and full of weeds. It seemed like it was mostly weeds. But getting the lawn mowed properly, with some good fertilizer and weed control and sufficient water creates amazing results.

This book helped me understand different grass types, weed varieties and how to treat them, how to select fertilizers and how much to apply based upon grass type, how much work you want to put into your lawn, and soil types. Your lawn can take as much work as you want to put into it, but the minimum amount can be pretty low. I probably picked a medium amount because of all the recovery I had to accomplish. My neighbors routinely complimented the lawn and by the end of the season it wasn't much work at all.

This book is concise, well illustrated, and very informative. It sure helped me and I believe that if you are a beginner like me, it can be of great help to you.

I bought this book because I was buying another one of Lior's books, and I am glad I did. This book is a great book if you want to change the way your company does business and how it treats it's customers. Like other reviews about this book have said this book gives you basic principals on how to build better customer "relationships" (not relations, notice the "ship" at the end) with your customers. I am an IT Director for a company, and have a side network consulting business and I have put the ideas in this book to use in both places. If you buy this book and don't get anything out of it, at least take this little nugget:

"Remeber your customer is the reason why you are in business." -- Lior Arussy, Passionate & Profitable: Why Customer Strategies Fail and 10 Steps to Do Them Right!.

Passionate & Profitable: Why Customer Strategies Fail and 10 Steps to Do Them Right has a rather simple premise - spending time and money on customer retention is of no value if it is not done in the context of having a well-defined execution strategy.

The goal of the book is to show the reader how to form strong, sustainable, and profitable relationships with customers. The challenge is that there are many critical decisions and trade-offs that have to be made, but many companies often make the wrong decision. Another issue is that many companies live by the credo of `Build a better mousetrap, and the world will beat a path to your door'. The problem is that even with the best mousetrap, the world won't come if you don't have a well-developed customer strategy. Passionate & Profitable is all about creating that well-developed customer strategy.

The book is worth it alone for the 25-question corporation-customer experience aptitude survey on pages 19-20. The survey examines the health of your relationship with your customers and is likely a good indicator of your profitability.

Another great section is pages 109-115 which goes into the organization-focused vs. customer-focused organizational structure. This section shows how many organizations are created with functional expertise via groups, i.e., engineering, R&D, sales, operations, etc. Arussy shows that a customer-centric organization must have the customer focused in the center, with the various groups supporting those customers. The beauty of a customer-centric organization is that all of the employees and functions are fully aligned around the customer cause.

Chapter 8 reiterates the importance of organizations training their employees and trusting them to make the correct decision. A focal point is that if you do not trust your people, do not hire them. And if you hired them, give them the tools to excel. After all, their success is your organizations success.

For those organizations that are serious about their customer strategy and looking for ways to improve it, Passionate & Profitable is a valuable book that can help achieve that goal.

I've had the pleasure of attending Lior's seminar and I was extremely impressed with his passion towards the subject of customer experience and focus. After the seminar I read his book and I was not disappointed - it's a goldmine - full with insights and concepts that are right on money. Share this book with your peers...I did - it helped me drive some great new ideas in my organization.

I've read all of Lior's books and been through his workshop. He always nails the topic and this book is no exception.

This book reminds us that innovation does not happen by accident but is the result of a well developed customer strategy.

I found the use of real life examples combined with surveys and activity sheets really helped me develop a servicing strategy that was right for my organization.

I love this book. If you enjoy cultural trivia you would enjoy this book which is made up of 3-5 paragraph stories. I started reading them to my 10 and 12 year old kids and they love them.

I read this book about 15 years ago and was delighted to find it on amazon. This is a keeper, one that you can browse through over and over again. It contains stories of little known aspects of the lives of very well known people and is rather like an encyclopaedia based on People magazine. The element of surprise at the end gives a delightful twist to each story.

As Napoleon indicated, History is the lies upon which we've all agreed. There is no such thing as a work of history that doesn't leave some important element out. Partly that's to make history more palatable for a new generation -- who really wants to know about dentistry in the Colonial era when we're reading about George Washington and his false teeth? No matter what the reason, though, once an item is left out of history it tends to disappear permanently.

Unless Paul Harvey Jr. gets his hands on it.

Paul Harvey Jr, who writes the short vignettes for his father's radio show "The Rest of the Story," has a gift for uncovering forgotten facts. Did you know there was another Three Stooges? Did you know Jack Benny was invited to join the Marx Brothers? Did you know one of our Founding Fathers kept his wife chained in the basement because of persistent congenital madness? I hadn't known that.

This book is an incomplete collection of Harvey's vignettes for his father's show. Some are published under the name "Paul Aurendt," and if you can find them, jump on them with both feet. However, this book provides a good primer for the forgotten corners of history, and also allows you to own copies of the vignettes Harvey has made famous over the last 25 years. One can only hope that Harvey's example will inspire more historians to investigate the forgotten corners of history and find what's been otherwise forgotten. I'd buy more of these books if more of them were available.

An outstanding resource for copywriters and storytellers

Paul Harvey is a master at condensing the essence of a story into a few short paragraphs. These transcripts of his popular syndicated radio program serve as great models for anyone looking to create intriguing little stories for business presentations and sales letters. Highly recommended.
