All I can say about this book is WOW! This true story is so amazing for many reasons, that I simply could not put it down from the minute I started reading it. I had a husband to greet and a dinner to cook, but I couldn't put the book down. RaNelle and Terry's ordeal from their plane crash is told in graphic, heart-wrenching, horrifying detail. Again I say WOW! Absolutely incredible. I'm not gonna give details because you have to read it to see how extraordinary it is. Then, to me, the good part starts. RaNelle has a Near-Death Experience right after being rescued. What follows made me cry. I felt her pain, fear and wonder. Her descriptions of the Other Side are breathtaking, astounding, and there are lessons to be learned for all of us who want to listen. Please, do yourself a favor and get this book.....if you do, God meant for you to have it.

Great read for marketing professionals

I work in marketing, so my interest in this book was driven primarily by the section on advertising and games. I was not disappointed by the methods presented in the first third of the book. Not all of them are practical for a business with a modest budget, but there is definitely something for every marketer in there. The chapters on product placements in games and advergames both highlight some of the more inexpensive things you could do, which I appreciated.

The remainder of the book was very thought-provoking if "high concept." If you've enjoyed books like "Tipping Point" and "Predictable Irrationality" that paint big ideas and tell great stories, but don't necessarily spell out an action plan for you to follow, this book is definitely for you.

Whether you work in gaming already or not, this book is an excellent survey of the state of art at the intersection of business and games. Its a rare report that can bring you seriously up to date in a couple plane trips worth of reading. And if you think that games don't apply to your business you're likely to be surprised at some of the serious applications in place today.

Whats really interesting is that some of ways games are being used now really highlight good management practices in general. For example, when see the amount of "productivity" gamers generate in response to clear goals and rewards it will make you think about what a drain poor communication may be in your office.

I got a chance to review an early version of this book. David and Ethan did a great job of presenting all the important ways today's businessperson needs to think about games, whether in terms of advertising, training, recruiting, etc. The businesses which will do the best via games will be the ones that actually take the time to understand what makes games unique and compelling - see the case-study on Burger King's game - and not just another new form of media to be exploited. A game exists somewhere between the player and the developer, which means the "communication" never belongs to anyone - a tricky proposition for many corporations, I'm sure.

A valuable resource

I picked up this book on a whim, and ended up blowing through it in a night. The writting is clear and the cadence enjoyable. The authors deliver insightful recommendations and thought provoking examples to help anyone - from the smallest start-up to the largest of corporations - think about how games can better their business in many ways.

Having played games for at least a decade, I was suprised at what I didn't know. The depth of passion in this space is obvious and the depth of research equal. And best, more than a dry reference, this book reads like a dialogue between you, the reader, and a couple good friends.

If you're looking for ways to expand, enhance, drive, or build momentum in your business, this text is a great resource.

I've read several coaching books and none have given me the practical advice and tools as Coaching Salespeople into Sales Champions. The coaching philosophy of Keith Rosen is sound and his ability to clearly articulate how to implement that philosophy is why this book is so valuable. A must read and resource for every sales coach.

Great Resource That Can Positively Impact Revenue

Review Date: 2008-10-29
Attention all business owners, executives who are organizationally accountable for the sales department, and sales managers - I highly recommend this book for you. Keith Rosen has done an amazing job of clearly defining what it takes to consistently lead a strong, high-performing sales team. Sometimes business owners or executives to whom a sales manager reports do not have a clear understanding of how critical both sales coaching and training, individually and in a team format, are to overall sales performance on a daily, ongoing basis. Do you ever wonder why sales employee turnover is high, or why performance metrics, goals and revenue or profit expectations are not achieved? There is a tendency to think "you train them once, and they should be good to go". Unfortunately, this is not the case and may be one of the reasons behind turnover and less-than-expected performance.

It is time for businesses to think differently about their sales departments and personnel, and implement innovative, people-building processes and systems that create what it really takes to support sales champions. Attraction of top sales talent, inspiration, development and retention are key. This book is a great place to get started.

A Sales Management Masterpiece For Our Times

Review Date: 2008-07-07
To say this book is interesting and useful is an understatement. I found it full of information that far exceeds the investment of the time to read it and the money to purchase it.

Most material on the subject of sales managemet is watered down and filled with fluff. Keith Rosen is so specific that you will want to keep a copy with you at all times as a refence on what to say or do when faced with a challenge in managing your sales team.

For one thing, he re-defines what sales management is in today's environment. The back of the book alone is worth thousands of dollars to anyone who is smart enough to use it. The rest is just a master course on "new school" sales behaviors and accountability.

One day this material will be looked at the same way Dale Carnegie's information was viewed, It will no doubt change an entire generation of sales managers if they just read it and follow the advice given.

Thanks Keith for this golden "go to" book. Now I know what to do when I am brainlocked. This is the book that every author of sales books wished they wrote. If I sound envious, I am.

I like it, but watch the notation!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-10-24
This is the beginner book I used, and I like it. It covers a good range of basic conga patterns to a medium level of difficulty. Be aware that it cannot, and does not pretend to cover all Latin music styles as it relates to conga. For a beginner, that should not be an issue unless you are interested in something unusual, like the folklorico drumming adapted from bata, or perhaps are only interested in learning one style in depth.

The CD is enormously helpful. In fact, it's laughable sometimes to try to work through a new pattern without listening to the corresponding CD track first. Guaranteed you will not have the emphasis or attack right!

I also fully agree with another reviewer that the notation is so good that I've adopted it for my own use. The downside is that this is NOT commonly-used notation for congas. As a result, when you pick up other conga books, you will have to adapt. That's not enough of a barrier to keep someone from this book though, and I should also point out that conga notation isn't exactly standardized anyway.

Excellent introductory book

Review Date: 2007-04-22
I found this book invaluable for learning the basics of conga drumming without a teacher. I used it for several months before hitting my first conga class, and was really glad I had worked with the book. I was able to pick up right away with the rest of the class on several of the rhythms. However, I will warn anyone using the book that this drumming world is steeped with "variations". That is, you'll frequently find that your teacher is using a slightly different variation than the one taught in the book. This is fine, however, since it's usually easy to alter what you're doing slightly.

One of the more impressive aspects of the methods in this book is the holistic approach, for example, teaching how to feel the clave underneath the rhythms you're playing. The book also does about as good a job as any book can at teaching the hand technique, although I highly recommend complementing this with good videos of accomplished conga players. Youtube, for example, is a great resource. Here again, though, you will find different philosophies of technique, and again your teacher may have his own emphasis.

Almost everything you'd ever need to play conga

This book is extremely readable and it teaches you terrific grooves right from the get-go. I'm a pianist who has decided to learn some percussion and I am having a blast learning to play the conga. Even my non-musician girlfriend has learned some of this stuff!

I agree with all the other reviewers... this is a great book for beginners and advanced (as well as folks somewhere in the middle, like me).

One thing I didn't expect to like, since I can read regular music notation, was their concocted music notation. To my surprise, I like theirs better. It's very intuitive, and after a while, you can pretty much sight-read the rhythms. If I hear/see a conga pattern I like in the future, I'll probably write it down using their notation.

For me this book is one of the most profound and important books I have ever read about relationships and communication. Although it is written as a book about marital relationships, it has implications for every kind of relationship, and not only intimate or dyadic ones. And, although it is written as a pop psychology book, I think it makes a real contribution to the social-scientific understanding of relationships and communication -- that is, it stands up well as a general model of communication and relationship. I think it is a great book and would be of great value not only to those trying to solve relationship problems but to those wanting to understand the ways in which self and relationship are intertwined in general. It illuminates all of the areas of one's life in which one communicates with others and, as another reader said, can be as valuable for understanding past relationships as for dealing with present ones.

'Niagra' is known for the movie that made Marilyn Monroe a star, and this book shows every moment of her life during the filming. As a true Monroe fan, I'm more interested in the casual candid photos of her more so than the made-up studio photography. My favorite photos of her in the book are the pictures taken of her while she was learning how to smoke a cigarette for the film. She had never smoked before and had to look like a natural within a few hours. These are photos you wouldn't see on a billboard or in a magazine. They show her true nature. They show her being a real person, vulnerable and timid.

Wonderful, oversized hardcover book with lots of black and white images of Marilyn while at Niagara Falls, shooting her first mayor movie "Niagara" in '52. I enjoy all the photographs, my favorites are where Marilyn practices smoking. There are also pictures of her with Joe Dimaggio before they were married, pictures of Marilyn without her make-up on and her face covered with vaseline as she liked to do. Reading her script while relaxing in bed. These are priceless photographs, showing Marilyn at the very brink of superstardom.

Cross-Check on Marilyn Monroe's My Story and Casual Glimpses
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-26
At 26, Marilyn Monroe was on the brink of stardom as she filmed her first leading role in Niagara. Canadian photojournalist Jock Carroll spent weeks with her at Niagara Falls during the on location shooting, and took almost 400 photographs. He also interviewed her throughout these weeks, and captured a lot of her activities on and off the set. He was preparing for an article called "Marilyn's Not So Menacing" that appeared in an August 1952 issue of Weekend Magazine, Canada's largest periodical at the time. You will see more candid photographs in this book than in any other source. Mr. Carroll died in 1995, and these photographs were located then. The photographs are well reproduced in this book, and bring her to life in both her glamorous and nonglamorous roles.

I was attracted to this book when I realized that it contained extensive interviews of Marilyn Monroe when she was 26, just before she reportedly drafted My Story. That autobiographical book has come in for many challenges concerning its authenticity and the strong stories contained in it. Reading the interviews in Falling for Marilyn provides a useful contrast in terms of what she says about herself and how she says it.

I was surprised to see that the stories she tells are almost identical in both books. That similarity argues for either for her being the author of My Story, or Mr. Carroll being the author. Interestingly, she tells a story here of having been recognized in school for her fiction as a child, and wanting to become an author. The most significant difference between the books was that here she claims to have needed the $50 she got for shooting the famous nude photographs to pay rent while in My Story, the money is used to retrieve her repossessed car. A minor discrepency comes in her asking Mr. Carroll a lot about Korea because she was thinking about doing a USO tour there. In My Story, she claims that this came up for the first time after she and Joe DiMaggio were in Japan on their honeymoon. There could be truth in both versions of these two stories.

There is a Zsa Zsa Gabor story here that is almost word-for-word the same as in My Story. This is true, as well, for one about being molested as a little girl by a boarder who paid her a nickel to keep quiet.

To me, the most telling comparison was in what Mr. Carroll observed about her. Even though she was making a fine salary at this point, she was always short of clothes while he was with her. This is something that she talks about a lot as being a function of her poverty in My Story. She also was always studying scripts or reading intellectual books, which is consistent with My Story also. She also made self-destructive comments about sleeping pills to Mr. Carroll as she does in My Story.

What was a pleasant surprise for me was Mr. Carroll's descriptions of his reactions to her. Those are missing from most books about Ms. Monroe. He had just come back from his own honeymoon a month before. He found himself strongly attracted to her, despite this. "The effect on me was cataclysmic." " . . . [W]hen she looked directly at you, it made you feel as though . . . you were sharing some naughty secret."

The photographs themselves are certainly sexy, but not revealing in the sense that we think of revealing today. They were daring, however, for 1952 in showing a little cleavage, a loose blouse, and sometimes erect nipples through her clothes.

She consciously worked on achieving this effect for these photographs. During a tour of a silverware factory, "Marilyn brightened [these] . . . photos by loosening the straps of her blouse, leaning over . . . to give . . . a good view of her breasts . . . ."

On the other hand, she was very protective of her relationship with Joe DiMaggio who did not want any publicity. She refused an interview where the interviewer was trying to worm in questions about the Yankee slugger.

My favorite photographs in the book include:

Reading script in bed (two page spread), located in the book's very beginning

Posing in front of the falls, p. 19

Visiting the silverware factory, p. 33

Combing her hair, p. 48

Arranging her hair, pp. 52-53

Laughing, pp. 84-85

Looking at Jean Peters' suit, p. 87

Smiling, p. 102

Seeing the vibrancy of this woman makes the sadness of her life all the more poignant. Be sure to read My Story to pick up on that contrast. Regardless of who wrote it, that is how Ms. Monroe saw herself and her life.

Consider how you can lift someone's spirits every day. Look for the hurting heart behind the naughty or haughty eyes . . . or any other strongly affecting mannerisms you notice. They are just part of the cover up.

THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFULLY COLLECTED PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN OF MISS MONROE AT HER VERY EARLY CAREER. A TIME WHERE IT WAS PRIOR TO HER "HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE" AND "GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES" SUCCESS, WHICH LAUNCHED HER TO ETERNAL STARDOM. THIS IS A "MUST" FOR ALL MARILYN MONROE AFFICIONADOS. IT IS TRULY A BEAUTIFUL BOOK THAT I ENJOY READING AND REVIEWING MANY TIMES OVER.

He has a perfect way of helping sales people seeing selling as a gentle conversation in the world and what they do that scares people and causes them to hide from us. He demonstrates that selling is not a killer sport... it's not about pushing and shoving people

Easy, but Highly Informative Read

You don't have to have the title of "salesperson" to get a lot out of this book. Anyone who has business development as a part of their job will find the techniques helpful. I'm a woodworker, but I still have to find and win new clients. This book has given me some great ideas that I'm already putting into practice. It also taught me quite a bit about fishing. It's a fast, fun read, but packed with helpful ideas and tips.

Use this book to "catch" the sale of your life!

Joe DiMisa marries two age-old activities, sales and fishing, to come up with a guide that appeals to every person who makes their living by selling. Mr. DiMisa uses "life" advice from his successful fishing father-in-law to walk the reader through concepts from prospecting to closing. The Captain's Logs are successfully interjected throughout the guide to tie the two topics, sales and fishing together. By the end of the book, the readers wish they all had a Tarpon Willie to guide their boat and guide their lives. In addition, Mr. DiMisa calls on past experiences as a successful sales consultant in side-bars titled "This ain't no fish tale!" These anecdotes and examples are real-life experiences that allow the reader to match the concepts to reality.

Whether the readers are fishermen are not, each person will be able to take away several ideas to propel them in their sales career. Mr. DiMisa's guide should be required reading for companies that survive on sales and customer experience.

Great sales insight.

As a sales director you sometimes can become removed from your front line sales reps. Reading Joe's book forced me to re-examine the traits of an effective sales rep and an in-effective rep. It helped me understand some things I could do in order to break down barriers for my sales staff so they could more easily "catch" new customers. I've made it required reading for my sales managers so that they can use some of Joe's experiences to better their sales staff. I've already seen great results!
