The best color book!

I was so lucky to find this color book at a garage sale years after my mom had thrown away my old copy.

Panda learns about the colors he can make with his paint box, and then needs a bath! It's very simple, but in my opinion this is better for teaching colors than a book where you have to keep track of what's going on! Panda's reactions are the same ones a child might have. If you can get hold of this book, do so!

I loved this book very much as a child. I recently described my memory of the book to my mother, and asked her what the title was. I used to love staring at all of the colors, and learning the outcome of their combinations. This is simple education made fun!

Bring Back Panda Bear

How could this wonderful little book be out of print? Sure, it's not action-packed, nor it is tied in with television characters; but this was one of our all time favorites when our first child received it as a gift in a set of ten Little Golden Books, about 16 years ago now. Alas, after four 'readers' it has slowly found its way of the beloved scraggly blankets that get dragged around. I have looked for this set for quite a few years now, to no avail.

There is no thrill per se in this story, just a little panda and his friend Brown Bear who discover colors and the color combinations that can be created. Short, sweet, and perfect for the quick story for stolen moments in a hectic life, as well as a calming bedtime story.

Comprehensive Overview of Period Finishes
Helpful Votes: 19 out of 19 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-02
This is an excellent book for the professional designer or decorator looking for a comprehensive catalog of "out of the ordinary" finishes. The finishes reviewed are generally european in heritage, although many were imported to the US during the last 2 centuries. This is not a handbook for the weekend "do-it-yourself" decorator/painter as the finishes illustrated require multiple steps and practice to attain the desired look. The book is an excellent resource when discussing finishes and 'looks'with a professional painter/finisher. Additionally, the photographs are of a fine enough quality to help the reader understand the relationship of the color, technique and texture to the surrounding room. This should help the reader to visually conceive the design before the project execution and thereby minimize 'mistakes'. Enjoy!

I found the book very well done. There are many techniques that can be used to decorate furnitures and walls and all of them are very well explained. I'll soon try to embellish my house!

I may be a weekend do-it-yourselfer, but, I love looking through this book for period ideas for my 200+ year old Georgian home.

The photography is beautiful and it's full of ideas and the history of the colors and methods used is fascinating.

My young reading group loved this creative book. At one time or another, who doesn't end up staring at the wall paint and wondering what shapes may lie there? I turned this into an activity where, after we read the book, they all had to go home and write down 5 things they saw in their own walls. Parents and children alike reported having a great time with this activity. What a wonderful imagination builder!

Another great book by Tom Matus. I finished both projects in the book and I'am very pleased with the results. The book has great pictures and clear instructions. Tom tells you how to carve, paint and antique birds. The wood duck was a hard paint job for me but the end result was worth it. Thanks J. Mallory

Another Great Book by a Master

Review Date: 2007-01-15
After buying and trying Tom's first book. I was amazed that in the end, I had a decoy I could be proud of; all on my first try. I am not a stranger to woodworking so having a band saw and drill press helps, but you can always find a friend with one or order roughed out blanks on the internet. This book is a great opportunity to try another style of decoy. It is not a follow-on but stands independantly with start to finish photos and detail. The spring Woodcarving Illustrated has a companion Wood Duck Hen to the book's feature Drake. After talking with Tom Matus via web ring, the first thing I learned was this is art, not science. Variations are okay and his sketches are by hand. My first duck sits on my mantle, but it is water ready. That is the goal by the way. Nothing prouder than hunting over your own "rig"

I often take this book with me when I am painting on location to help me set up my palette of pastels & easel with paper. Every landscape painter should have this book in their collection.

If you have never seen my work before here's a few things you can expect from this book.

* 25 elegant projects that use a wide variety of premade frames and different materials from paint to paper and a lot of embellishments in between.

* A variety of styles are represented from very simple to intricate. Modern, eclectic, whimsical, and elegant styles are well represented.

* Uses materials you can find in any general craft store like a Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Jo Ann's. Most scrapbooking stores might carry these supplies as well.

* Perfect for people who are interested in scrapbooking, paper crafting, general crafting, painting, fabric and/or ribbon addict, or people who want to test out their hidden creative abilities.

* This book caters to a beginning/intermediate level. Advanced talents might enjoy the book as well, and could just as easily alter the projects for your own taste.

Creative, Clear and Fun!

Being an articulate person, yet not an interior decorator, I found this book most useful. After buying a new home, a budget to fix it was minimal. Yet, I faux painted walls and used furniture in techniques that I would never have believed. The author is very good in verbalizing how to paint with a flair of Rembrandt (and clear photos of each technique). When I applied each technique I truly felt accomlpished. I am not a salesman ,but it true, this book worked for what I was looking for - some artistic assistance!

One of the best books for the do-it-yourself decorator.

This book has it all. The text and photos are clearly presented. The book begins with the proper prepartion steps in decorating a variety of surfaces from furniture, accessories to interiors surfaces- walls, floors, ceilings. If you ever consider painting or decorating your walls, floors or furniture- this is the book for you. Techniques are broken down into easy, intermediate to advanced-- so you can grow with the book. Paint and faux finish techniques from A to Z are covered... sponging, ragging, glazing, marbleizing, woodgraining, gilding, stenciling, tortoiseshell, malachite, trompe l'oeil and more. After reading this book, you can wait to get some brushes wet with paint and transform your home
