Paint Books

Not necessarily a bad book, but a faux painting instruction book definitely for a beginner. Simplistic finishes that are far from a professional look.

If I had been able to peruse this book in a store I never would have bought it. While the pictures are very nice, I know I'll never actually do any of the things in it, so it was pretty much a total waste for me.

This book is a poor rehash of stuff from other books. Eddie first book is MUCH more informative than this one.

A rather disappointing read since the book fails to adequately deal with the politics of the period. House's argument that oppositional painting is necessarily political is not only flawed but little evidence is offered in support of his argument, an argument which goes something like this: many impressionist works and also those by Manet explicitly reject preordained hierachies of value in terms of both legibility of subject matter and technique,they are thus subversive,disruptive and oppositional and as a result political. I had expected the book to address in a more explicit, detailed and concrete manner the relationship of art produced at the time to politics. However, many of the descriptions of the works themselves are enlightening and chapter 4, 'The Viewer of Modern Life' is well worth a read.

This is the second PBN calendar that I purchased from this company. The first was un-paintable because of the slippery paper. This one has better paper, but the amount of paint provided is barely sufficient for one picture, let alone 4. The brush is also way too big for the tiny lines. I'm an experienced PBN painter so I have my own supply of paint and small brushes. I used 23 additional paint containers to mix the colors needed. The pictures are good, but the print is tiny for some of the sections. I would definitely not recommend this for kids or inexperienced painters.

I bought this calendar for my niece (7) and nephew (9) for Christmas. They loved it and started painting right away, but soon found out that the tiny amount of each color paint provided is not nearly enough to complete all four canvases. I called the publisher (212-254-5900) to ask for more paint, and they were willing to send me only one more set of paints. I estimate that my neice and nephew will need at least three more sets of paints to complete the canvases.
I could tell them dozens of times to "use thin coats of paint" but they are only kids....

If you are looking for a book of paint recipes that use readily available materials this is not it. This book is a blatant attempt to sell her otherbooks, her specially made products, and some arcane home decorating methods. The book was of marginal interest to me simply because I didn't know what different paints and finishes were for. That I could get the information for free at a paint supply store is something I learned after reading this book. I recommend that you check out the book from the Library before deciding that you want to buy it,

Why buy this overpriced book with many black and White illustrations when you can get a better book at a much better price?

This is a second-rate revised version of the artists earlier book, "So You Want Snow Scenes to Paint". The colour here is lacking saturation and some of the paintings included in the earlier book have been cut from this one. Keep looking for the original - it's much better. Not recommended.

Not a bad book but definitely not good either. Most of the book seems to be filler with very little hard substance. Definitely not for a beginner, although an intermediary or already accomplished artist may find the book informative. There is defininetely much better to be had.
