Cute way to teach colors

The best thing about this book is the gorgeous illustations. This is, first and foremost, an art books as it teaches kids about color. Not much in the way of story, but I did love the "big words" and the beauty of the colors.

My 3 year old loved it. He likes Harry Potter and LOVES trains. I thought it would have more train pictures to color(it only had one), but he didn't seem to mind.

It's ok for what it is, but

This book is ok for what it is, which is a collection of 100 paintings by different artists and a few tidbits they share. Inspirational, maybe to some. Instructional, not in the slightest. Tips... not that I saw, though I could have missed them.

The book and paintings might offer some insight to those wanting to see what can be accomplished with the various mediums and palettes of colors. It might offer some exposure to differing styles. It's not going to teach much to most though. Still I find it well worth the (used) price I paid.

Earlier Alwyn Crawshaw--good for marine painters
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2005-01-09
This is an earlier book by British artist Alwyn Crawshaw. Mr. Crawshaw has the ability to take complex subjects and simplify them. In the case of boats and harbors, he shows how to do barges, boats, harbor details and water. Both watercolor and acrylic techniques are covered, though not in detail. As ever, Mr. Crawshaw is not a colorist--he is, rather, better at value and shape and perspective, as well as composition. If you want to learn what to see--what to draw, when you are painting a marine scene, this is a somewhat useful reference, but it's not one of Crawshaw's best books. As his career as a teacher and author progressed, his books improved greatly. This one is probably best if you are already a Crawshaw fan.

Good info about paints, but how do I paint my boat?
Helpful Votes: 31 out of 31 total.

The author covers the conventional paints, epoxys, polyeurethanes, gelcoats, solvents, safety, primers, painting on various surfaces, possible problems you may encounter with poor preparation, and discusses proper temperatures and humidity. The information is good, but I still don't really know what to do with my boat. The author is very knowledgeable, but tries to cover too many topics/surfaces. I was looking for information on painting my fiberglass boat. He barely covered fiberglass, and now I will purchase Fiberglass Renovation, which I believe will provide the information I need. I think this is a good book, but I was dissappointed, because I still do not feel confident about starting such a project. This book needs more photographs, and step by step instructions for the DYI (Do it yourself) people.

Grab a used copy if you can find one.

Amazon.com located my copy for me, so don't give up hope of obtaining one. Don't let the word "Illustration" in the title scare you off if you are an aspiring artist with an interest in these topics. Ted Wilbur's introduction is encouraging and insightful. Good coverage of most all of the basics. It goes into a lot of detail on drawing and painting aircraft, ships and vehicles. Good treatment of initially drafting the machines. Given the age of the book (1986), it remains a useful primer to the subject.

I hope this title is reprinted. Cam Martin

My 4-year-old son LOVES the Maisy sticker books, and he loves to paint with water colors. So I thought this would be lot of fun for him. And it was. But I was a little disappointed because the pages are glossy, making it hard for the paint to stick. It didn't seem to discourage him much, though. So depending how picky your child is (or you are!) you might do fine with this book. Just so you know what you're getting.

I teach graphic design and use the CorelDRAW 10 Suite as part of the curriculum. I guess if you knew nothing about CorelDRAW this would be an easy way to start. However, there is so much to learn that this is just the start. You will still have to purchase the Official Guide to CorelDRAW 10 and Corel Photopaint. (Both available through Amazon.com)... I recommend the Official Guide series and a lot of pratice. What ever you decide have fun....CorelDRAW is a terrific suite of programs.

I bought this book because I love the work of this autor, but this edition hasn't good enough pictures, the one which is on the tittle-page doesn't exist inside, and there are 4 pictures that you can find in other books from Lola Ades. Looks like a summary.
