I have about any art book imaginable and ordered this from an Artist International Magazine sales pitch. It has 100 different artists with no more than 20 sentences describing their "technique". I would not recommend this book for much other than seeing different paintings of different artists. And I hadn't heard of any of the painters at that.

Inspiring

This is a good book to be used as a springboard for your own work. It has works in different mediums, each artist briefly describing how they came to their finished work; it is not meant to be a 'how-to'; rather, to stimulate and hopefully jumpstart your temporary artist's block. It is also good to read other artist's technical approach to a subject.

Ok for what it is

This book is ok for what it is, which is a collection of 100 paintings by different artists and a few tidbits they share. Inspirational, maybe to some. Instructional, not in the slightest. Tips... not that I saw, though I could have missed them.

The book and paintings might offer some insight to those wanting to see what can be accomplished with the various mediums and palettes of colors. It might offer some exposure to differing styles. It's not going to teach much to most though. Still I find it well worth the (used) price I paid.

Don't get me wrong, there is useful information in this book, just not a whole lot of it. And the over-emphasis on flame painting - what's that all about? Perhaps the book should have been titled "How to Custom Flame Damn Near Anything". As a practical guide to custom painting it falls short of the many superior other references out there. As a fan book for the Monster Garage series, forget it, as the show only gets a passing mention.

Found this book to be helpful in the way it gave a brief but easy-to-read outline of the processes involved in all the main areas of custom painting. Being a flame enthusiast myself, I found it benificial as it showed the main skills required to carry out the job and the tools and equipment needed.

Its a good one but....

This book covers all the steps you need to know but the thing i didnt liked is that it have a few chapters from other books. So if you have "cheap tricks & special F/X of craig Fraiser" you will not be happy to see a part of this book (37 pages). and from onother book i have - one about pinstripping (also Craig Fraiser's) (33 pages). So if you dont have these books i will recommend to add this one to your collection.

Paint Shop Pro 7 POWER SOLUTIONS has been very helpful to me.
I am new to PSP or any graphics program so I do need some help even with the basics. This book does not deal with the basics or with printing ( which is what I need), but it does provide a lot of good information and the picture presentations are very good....

Not what I needed

Paint Shop Pro 7 ..Power Solutions is not what I need. No help at all. Page 1 is Customizing the toolbar... I got the book
to help me get started on PSP7...never used it before. Silly
to try to customize a toolbar if I have no idea how the tools
work.

My objective in downloading PSP was to aquire a picture and then
select that picture in 4 quandrants and then enlarge each
quadrant by 1.78 and then print out each quadrant picture.

I want to print an enlarged picture in parts so I can fit
them togather. No help from this book...no printer info.

Needs updating for scanners, cameras & inkjets

This full color book is full of procedures to do text, selections, coloring, compositing, layering, masking, filtering, and correcting images using PSP v7.0, which is the current version. It has a couple ways of repairing worn photos and a small fun area that includes turning a photo into a pencil sketch. There is a very short 2 1/2 pg index.

It did not, however, include any information and techniques for using PSP with scanners and digital cameras and inkjet printers, which I think is a significant omission. For example it did not include any information in scanning or transferring a photo as a 1024 x 768 pixel image and tell you the better ways to get the best 5x7 photo printed off on a 1200 dpi inkjet printer. In fact scan and print is not in the index, although scanning is touched on in the photo repair section (p157).

There is a section on using 3rd party PhotoShop compatible filters (p137, 165), such as Alien Skin and shareware. In the end there is some troubleshooting on deleting the registries (p169). There is no capability comparison with Adobe PhotoShop or other image editors. I read this book at a local library.

My 3-year-old animal obsessed daughter loves this book! Each animal has a spread with information about the animal and even a section on how to act like the animal. The only drawback is the actual face paint. It's very thick and difficult to get on the paintbrush that comes with it. It also takes a lot of scrubbing to wash it off. I'd buy the book again, but I'd definitely buy some different face paint to use with it.

Great, minus one Exception.

I got this book because I needed ideas for face painting. The book itself is awesome. Many different animals to choose from, with great step-by-step instructions for each.

However, The negative comes in with the paints themselves. I only used them once, painting a panda's face. They were on for about 3 hours before we attempted to remove them, without luck. Nothing we tried would get the paints off -- Water, Soap, Etc.

Eventually, it did come off, for the most part, however, the child was left with a black stain on his nose for quite a while afterwards.

To sum it up, buy the book, but use other paints.

Paint yourself wild then get out the sandblaster....

The kids loved the book and the paint, But......
The face paint that comes with the book will not wash off.
We tried cold cream, soap & water, handiwipes, alcohol etc.
This book should be banned.

It's the shortest pin striping book on the market that's for sure. 23 pages is pretty short for the money and info. Go buy the new old school rodz magazine and you will have the same basic info with more to look and then this book. Pick something else.

MWM lays out the basics in a way anyone can understand. He uses photos to show how he stripes a hot rod light housing and also shows many basic designs that you can immediately start practicing with. This book doesn't overwhelm you with a bunch of fancy lines and lettering, rather, it lists the materials you'll need to start striping and shows some basic technique. A quick read of about 20 minutes but you'll find yourself referring back to it over and over. I've read all of the pinstriper instructional book/pamphlets out there and i think i got the most out of this one.

This book comprises a compendium of monographs on all aspects of coatings technology. Its coverage is admirably broad, and its hefty presence on your bookshelf is sure to impress visitors. Unfortunately, that's where this book will stay, because its information content isn't worth the poor trees that were sacrificed on its behalf.

The monographs are only a few pages long--in many cases little more than pamphlets--and apparently hastily written. They lack the scope and detail that would make this volume a good reference work. Citations of the primary literature are narrow and limited at best.

Rather than spending the exorbitant price of this book, spend an hour or two with your favorite Net search engine reviewing specific aspects of coatings that interest you. You are bound to come out ahead.

Before I bought this book, I had never done wallpaper at all. The book contains excellent and easy-to-understand instructions and illustrations for all phases of the wallpapering process. My first wallpapering project turned out very well, even though I was a complete novice. I highly recommend this book.

This book is deceptive for the homeowner who does not have much experience hanging paper. It is written as if the author may have never hung paper! Some of the descriptions of procedures are absolutely wrong! Some other descriptions are worthlessly inadaquate. I am sorry I wasted my money on this book. A Complete Guide it is NOT!!
Example #1.) It pretends to explain how to cut paper for switchplates. The cut that it illustrates is absolutely WRONG!! Anyone who has done this knows the cuts should be at 45°. The 90° cuts they illustrate would leave wrinkled clumps at the edges.
Example #2.) The complete guide to removing grasscloth paper consists of one paragraph telling us to saturate it and scrape it.
This is totally inadaquate for anyone who has never removed this stuff. The tools should be described, the amount of time, drop cloths, etc..should all be included in this procedure. Anyone starting this procedure by simply doing as they say would be in for a real stressful event.
I say buy a different book!

I have had this book for a few years and went to pull it out for a furniture project. I attempted to do the mahogany finish and went out and bought $100 worth of supplies that were suggested in the book. I even tore out the page with the paint colors on it and took it to my paint store.

After applying the glaze as suggested it didn't look anything like what is in the book.

It looked terrible and not even close to a mahogany color!

So disappointed. I do faux painting of different styles and am a very creative person so it isn't that I am not capable of a simple project as this.

I would suggest if you buy this book and attempt any of the projects to come up with your own colors to use and not follow what is in the book.

Very disappointing!

This book is good resource guide for faux painting with water base paints and products. Each process is well instructed though pictures of the finished technique, related color samples, tools needed and product recipes. Faux techniques covered are from your basic sponging to granite to marble to wood effects. A great book for beginner faux painters, but also terrific resource for decorative ideas. If anyone is looking for a comprehensive guide to faux painting, you not go wrong with this book.

This book is not only overpriced. But, it is outdated as well...by 15 years. Making this book more or less useless in regards to removing graffiti. Because, newer chemicals are being used to remove newer dye type components of ink and paint that is used to deface property with graffiti.

You are better off to save your money and buy a book that is able to match the graffiti of today. I think common sense dictates this.

If you have an interest in removing graffiti or protecting buildings from graffiti then this book will give you the best guidlines of how to proceed. The author's experience comes from his own studies and implementation of graffiti removal on the London Underground. The book not only explains the psychology of graffiti gangs/individuals, but also the best techniques of removal and protection from the various forms of graffiti on different surface types and locations. It's explains how it's techniques have been proven through actual case studies in London and New York as well as providing key addresses and contact details of suppliers of the tools and chemicals needed in the process. Additionally, it provides charts for the best methods to proceed for removing graffiti with the most appropriate chemicals and methods. The only downside to the book is that it was written in 1991 and has not been updated to list the latest chemical products. However, if it's something you're serious about then this book is a must.
