This is a very good book for beginners who "want snow scenes to paint". The artist provides useful basics, straightforward examples, and appealing landscape scenes of prairies, mountains, rivers and forests. This original version has superior colour reproduction over later, revised, versions of the book (available under different title). Recommended, and as a basic book for beginners it rates 4*.

Not a bad book for starting out on industrial painting. Would be good for a paintiner or business who is getting into painting for the first time.

This book is helpful. He lists the colors used, but leaves out a lot of steps. The way he does the "final steps" would have helped me.

One of the best books about art techniques

i got here the brazilian translation of and old or diferent cover version, most of thoose books you buy for 5 or 6 bucks
teach how do do with some specific media, like one book for oil, other for watercolour, when you see you spent 200 bucks on a lot of small books ! they are good too, but thoose big photos take about the whole page, and really, what they teach could be only on 2 or 3 pages.

And that book teaches about everykind of art technique.

A good start to learn watercolor mixing for beginners.

Written in an easy-to-read manner, this book provides a good start for watercolor beginners. The book covers basics in watercolor mixing, from the three primary, secondary, to the six intermediate colors. Concepts of warm, cool, and complement colors are discussed and demonstrated. Simple exercises that are easy for beginners to follow include (but not limit to) painting with primary, cool, warm, and neutral colors (distinguished by color temperature), as well as painting with different color groups (distinguished by tones and values).

This book suits beginners who look for a rather suffice but not in-depth coverage of some of the basic aspects in watercolor mixing. Intermediate and advanced watercolorists certainly can live without it.

From the Author
This 64-page booklet is a first-hand account of the author's experience of being an art student in a fine art department in Newcastle-upon-Tyne during the late 1950s and early 1960s. It describes the key staff - Lawrence Gowing, Victor Pasmore and Richard Hamilton - and the Basic Design course and the more traditional methods they taught. It also provides an artistic, intellectual and cultural context; for example, the impact of American abstract expressionism on the student paintings. The booklet should be of interest to art students, art tutors, art historians and educationalists. There are 49 illus, 12 in colour.

About the Author
The author is a painter and freelance art critic and art historian noted for his books discussing the relationship between art and mass media.

Not Just a Kids Book!

It only gets four stars because it's not a comprehensive book, but a short little booklet (48 pages, with an index and a glossary). It's published by Barron's, who publish all those great, educational "made simple" type books on various subjects.

I've been through most of the books on markers that are out there. This book is the second best I've seen, I think. The very best is "Markers Wet and Wild," also available through Amazon. (Also, see the reviews already posted for the book "Rendering with Markers," They're accurate.) Anyway, this book has a lot for its short 48 pages. It's a good basic primer, and is a good resource if you're just starting to work with markers. It is also an excellent childrens book (see grade levels above).

It covers basic technique, nibs, mixing colors, types of papers good for marker drawing, how to use markers (bullet-tip, chisel point, etc), how to achieve effects (conveying motion and light, etc), then ends with exercises by drawing animals, scenery, rockets, applying markers in layers to achieve good results.

This has a nice low price and is totally worth it.
