Travel and culture all in art

After one year of travelling around Australia, I returned home to Ireland fascinated by Aborigine, Mauri and Polynesian culture. A friend gave me a gift of Bewick's book. I like art, but when representing a culture so far removed from my own I always think that photography is liable to be a more loyal medium in representing the culture in question. Bewick surprises me, she manages to imbue the whole atmosphere of a foreign culture through her paintings. There is something subtly sensual about her work. It is bright, alive & alert. She does not appear to be one of those artists that tries desperatley to throw her spectators into the depths of psycho-analysis. What you see is what you get. A great book, a real 'sit back and let the South Seas flow through you'. A must on any coffee table !

makes you want to live in the south seas .

Pauline Bewick, an Irish artist who has travelled all over the world and is inspired by what she sees, living in Ireland with her husband, and lives in the heart of Tuscany during the summer. Pauline has shown intrest in art since she was two, her mother, Harry, also an artist, kept all her work since she was two, and Pauline had a retrospective exhibition of her works from when she was two until her late forties. This retrospective exhibition took place in The Guinness Hop store in Dublin. In 1988 Pauline went to the South Seas with her two daughters, also artists, to work on her next exhibition. She went home to Ireland and began working on her south seas book.Pauline returned to the South Seas for another year to work on the book.In this book you will see Paulines unique paintings and read about the Maouri way of life and learn about their legends,- very interesting.Definitely a book to buy if you can't afford to buy her paintings. In 1995 Pauline had a large exhibition, called the 'The Yellow Man', Pauline created this creature while doodling in Italy, and went on to create hundreds of pieces based on this creature includind 75 ceramic pieces which she painted in Rampini Studios in Tuscany. Pauline is now preparing for an exhibition in Dublin on September 1999.The exhibition includes her very colourful series of 'Laughing Women" and her series of African Eve's with their babies, inspired by both her daughters becoming mothers, and Charles Darwins theory of the human race beginning in Africa.

Excellent Introduction

Having read a number of books and experimented on my own with watercolors (no formal instruction), I was disappointed in the results of my efforts. Then I picked up this book, followed the first lesson and was stunned at the quality of the result. This book goes step by step through techniques and each painting is very easy to follow. The results are a real ego booster. My only caveat is that you come to realize how important composition and color selection are to a painting's success, and this is the one area that the book is somewhat weak in.

Very good book for complete beginners!

I am a complete beginner at watercolors and this is the book for me. Each lesson is broken into Saturday's painting exercises, which focus on different watercolor techniques, and Sunday's painting. The exercises are just what I was looking for, I need that step by step guidance. This book is helping me get past that feeling of not knowing where to start with watercolors, and so far I am enjoying it so much.

In 1847 Araminta and her family are traveling from Boston to California in this delightful story. Stopping in Scranton, Pennsylvania, her uncle gives her a beautiful paint box that later tumbles out of their wagon. The paintbox passes into many hands from a riverboat gambler, to a young wife then, on to a Mormon family. This female historical narrative tells in a entertaining way the story of westward expansion to a young audience. The soft pastel-like watercolor illustration are beautiful.

THE NEW BABY by Ruth and Harold Shane (and illustrated by Eloise Wilkin) is a Little Golden Book that was first published in 1948. The plot of the book is simple, Mike, a young boy is gradually prepared by his parents (and an occasional delivery man) for the arrival of a new baby to the family. The illustrations are great! I love Eloise Wilkin!

This is a fine example of how to use the hake brush. It will teach you to loosen up your watercolors, and paint with an impressionistic style. Ron Ranson is an excellent instructor and explains much in this book. You will only be disappointed if you haven't read it.

10 ways to paint a rose
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-02
How many ways can you paint a rose? Ten different painters describe their way of paint a rose. Learning different ways of doing things is always fun and this book provides them all in one spot.

The book begins with two pages of general instructions such as paints, brushes and surfaces and there is also a list of general supplies needed to try these different techniques. Then each technique has its own materials list and how-to instructions. The templates are all provided in a center pull out section. There is a resources list also located in the center of the book.

There are plenty of photos showing the steps to create each type of rose. The surfaces that the roses are painted on are as varied as the style of each rose. If you are looking for inspiration, this book will show you the way to paint a rose can be more than one!
