A Great Book

I've waited thirty years for this book and I was not disappointed. I have read separate biographies of Rubenstein, Arden, Lauder, and Revson; this is by far the best. If you have any interest in beauty, glamor, art, social history, fashion, business or just a good story about two extraordinary women who created empires out of nothing, this book is for you.

This book is a delight.

War Paint gives us two biographies, a juicy bit of history, a slice of art, some romance, some business insights, a bit of drama, heaps of inspiration, and a lot of entertainment.

The thickness of the book is daunting, but considering what it offers it is certainly worth every page. The stories of these two remarkable women set amidst the landscape of the fashion industry in their time will certainly find a place in every reader's heart.

When Business Women were just that.....

I knew a fair amount about Helena Rubenstein, but knew little about her rival Elizabeth Arden, and this book pulled no punches about their rivalry. It was a time when those two created their own fortunes and companies from the ground up, something that doesn't seem to happen in the cosmetic industry today. It seems all you have to do is be a "media darling," sign a contract, and your name is plastered all over all kinds of products. Helena may have been rithless to those around her, but Miss Arden seemed to take great delight in backstabbing and the like. I'm sure I'm prejudiced, but Madame Rubenstein, albeit tiny, cut a regal figure, and to me,Miss Arden was a bit on the frumpy side. A very enjoyable book for those interested in the battle between those two.

Two Women With Similar Ideals

Rubinstein and Arden had a rivalry that you might compare to that of Jack Benny and Fred Allen--i.e. one largely conducted for publicity reasons. Lindy Woodhead has donesome amazing research, can you imagine, she spent months kneeling on the floors of Krakow parishes to find just the right birth certificate for Helena (nee Chaja) Rubinstein--not an easy thing to do, especially given the fact that Rubinstein lied about her age by several years! And in every case Woodhead goes the extra nine yards to try to distinguish what is true and what is false about her two millionairesses. They were among the first to sell American women the "culture of beauty," to insist that the cosmetics they sold would bring the consumer a whole zeitgeist of pleasure, not just individual beauty treatments. To this end they conspired with Madison Avenue and devised decades worth of intriguing, perhaps misleading advertisements.

In the end what lets us down is the feeling that perhaps the two women aren't actually that different, and it gets confusing trying to remember their slight differences--which of the two was four feet ten, while the other was five foot two? A depressing business saga of how the mass public can be manipulated with great success, but they will pay you back in the most final way--they will forget you as soon as you're not alive any more.

Roy Berns is an inventive genius and now is at the foremost color science program in the US, at Rochester Institute of Technology. His revision and updating of Billmeyer and Saltzman's classic reference is now firmly established as the best book of its kind anywhere.

(Full disclosure: I have known Dr. Berns since 1982 and knew the late Fred Billmeyer and Max Saltzman as well. Fred and Max were giants, and Roy is a worthy successor.)

This oversized book stands out from the crowd by virtue of its size and illustrations. Best-suited to students and those who want to understand the concepts without getting their hands dirty (in maths).

A bit pricy for the length, if you ask me.

Review Date: 2008-05-28
There are many books written on color, some of the classic being the ones by Judd and Wyszecki, Wyszecki and Styles, Durrett and others. The book by Billmeyer and Saltzman is exceptional. It provides a visceral understanding of the elements of color by dealing with the fundamentals by example. Each example builds upon the previous ones and as they do so one gains insights that surpass any other text. In many ways it reads like a novel, the wording is smooth and flawless and the inserts of wisdom resonate with the theme being developed.

Chapter 1 defines color. The approach is graphical and not mathematical, yet the mathematics flow immediately from the approach taken. Rather than providing details in equations the authors provide details in very well done graphics. The example used to describe color is brilliant. It uses the metaphor of colored stones and their classification. From that the complex issues and ideas of hue, lightness and chroma are immediately evident and do not require the reader to do anything except follow the colored stones. The shortest and best explanation ever!

Chapter 2 describes color using the red, blue and green models. The authors simply walk through the evolution and issues so that when one arrives at the CIE chart all makes sense. Then of course on page 61 they rip the chart to shreds, metaphorically to state that it is only a cross section of what is required; it forgets brightness!

Chapter 3 is about measurements. The approach is a great balance of ideas, constructs, implementations, and does not fall into the trap of over description or of simplifying too much. The reader is never put in the position of missing the dots in between. There is never "it I left as an exercise for the student" approach that many academic authors take. On p. 83 there is a good summary of all the key instruments and then details.

Chapters 4, 5, and 6 continue to look at measuring color, colorants (dyes versus pigments) and then producing colors. What I found interesting is that plants are said to have pigments, but to the authors pigments generally are non-organic compounds having metals.

What is missing? Well that will depend on each reviewer's favorite topic. Mine are twofold. First, what is color, namely what is the effect of absorption on light and why? For example in plant anthocyanins there are slight changes in the molecule of say cyanidin that change it from red to blue, because one absorbs blue, thus becoming red and one red thus becoming blue. This discussion would have helped. Then there is the issue of plant color in general. How would one estimate concentrations of separate anthocyanins from total reflected light knowing the underlying profiles. This would be applying signals and estimation to the overall problem. But that is just my preference, the book as it is currently done is perfect, I would just have wished that they kept going on, since what they had done was so well presented.

The latest edition of Billmeyer and Saltzman's Principles of Color Technology is a complete rewrite. The author's use of in-text examples and "back to principles" appendix facilitate understanding of the concepts. The range of color science conepts (from basic colorimetry to an end-to-end color imaging system) make it a must-have for the color science student to the experienced color professional.

I am really into drawing and I am good at it. However, horses are probably the hardest animals to sketch because of their interesting shape and detail. This book makes it easy to draw all kinds of horses, starting with simple heads, advanced heads, and then progressing to full bodies, getting more challenging but keeping an easy pace as you go. Not to mention tips on keeping porportions straight, and supply suggestions. Now I really want to get "Drawing Dogs" by Walter Foster!

I have only spoken with the author John Curran on the phone about his book and am inspired and encouraged by the content and philosophy. I will soon be reading his book and look forward to it. I am a professional artist and calligrapher. I work in watercolors and inks and when a mistake is made and you have spent hours on your piece putting your heart and soul into it you have to make your mistake work for you. This was the philosophy I learned in college from my professors. What I have discovered with my mistakes in my artwork is that they have been my greatest discoveries. I look forward to reading this inspirational book and thank-you John Curran for writing something encouraging for those who want to paint their world!

Thanks to some valuable insight, I was able to sort though some of my indecsions and found that my life has changed for the better.

I'm so happy Ms. Boles published another book. Her first book was astounding and now this book has proven that she is an author that truly has writing talent. As a person who has personally known her (from her hometown), I have to give her all the kudos in the world. It's so easy to imagine in your mind what her words are trying to portray. She is a blessing to the book community and I'll continue to watch for more books coming from her way!!!

Dani Blair is an artist and the ex-girlfriend of a Detroit Piston basketball player, Dallas Laylock, in Philana Marie Boles', In The Paint. Even though Dallas and Dani have broken up, Dallas still tries to keep Dani while maintaining his player ways. Despite Dallas' advances, Dani does her best to resist him as she buries herself deep in her career--a career that leaves her dissatisfied as a artist. When Dani is laid-off at the art gallery where she works, she is forced to do some soul-searching. Not only must Dani deal with Dallas and her job woes, she finds herself dealing with a strained relationship with her best-friend, Kizzy and her foster mother.

In The Paint is a fun romantic read. The story moves at a steady pace and the characters are well-developed. If you like romance, In The Paint will surely not disappoint.

I read about three books a week and this one really stood out to me because, even though the storyline is common about a girl losing her man and having to find herself again, Ms. Boles is really creative because the writing style is really beautiful and it reminded me literally of a painting. Danni Blair, the main woman in the book, is a painter and I wonder if Ms. Boles intended to have her words flow like they do. It's like when you look at a painting and it doesn't smack you over the head you just have to stare at it and experience it. I think her writing is unique. This is not for the reader who wants some page slapping drama filled beach read. It's more for someone who doesn't mind reading a book that doesn't force anything on you. I thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed this book and decided to post a review. I hope Ms. Boles will read this because you have a new fan and I hope you will continue to stand out from the same ole same ole. Sincerely, Sera Berry

In the Paint is about a Detroit woman named Danni Blair whose professional career and romantic relationship are in transition. Danni learns lessons through the people and circumstances of her life which makes for a thoughtful and unique read. Both clever and funny, the novel is written with pizzazz and has an identifiable and likeable voice.

This book is for those who love throwback novels; it's traditional in some ways yet sassy and contemporary in others. The dialogue has attitude to spare which makes for a fun read. Lots of scenes are open to individual interpretation and it's just an all-around satisfying read.

Alley Oop

Review Date: 2005-01-20
One of the most breathtaking plays in basketball is the alley oop. A lob pass is thrown from one player to another, the second player catching the pass in the air and slamming it through the basket in one smooth motion. It takes skill, precision, and a synchronous rhythm between the two players. Much like love. In The Paint, Philana Marie Boles's second novel after the exemplary Blame it on Eve, is a sexy, thought-provoking, and intelligently written story of two lovers, mired in the games of love. Danni Blair is an artist in spirit, nontheless with a silenced brush. Her on-again-off-again love, Dallas Laylock, is an NBA superstar, partly, through his romantic shenanigans, responsible for Danni's quieted artistry. This is their story of love, redemption, and awakening. Unlike so many contemporary novels, particularly in the AF-AM realm, Boles takes no short cuts in characterization or story. In The Paint is everything this discriminate reader seeks in a novel. Chock full of developed characters, intriguing situations, competent and compelling dialogue. It was a tremendous pleasure on the journey to finding out if Danni and Dallas would meet with defeat or victory. Boles is one to watch.

This covers the basics in the front (how to open a paint can, removing stray hairs from a brush, loading the roller, etc.). It also discusses some color theory to help with choosing a color.
Each technique gets several pages that include step-by-step instructions and photos. Also included are six sample results and usually some full room photos so you can see a finished look.
It also takes a variety of techniques to show theme rooms. For example Scandinavian room or a medieval hallway or a provencal kitchen.
All pretty useful if you want to try special paint effects in your home.

I bought this book with 4 other books from Amazon because I already had another book by this author from a local bookshop. I liked her projects so I wanted to look at more projects from her. To my surprise the book I already had (Practiacal Home Paint Effects by the same publisher and author issued in 2001) is almost identical with this book. This book speaks about the materials used, then described the techniques and then the projects follow.
Also, all other books give instructions to mix paint with glaze, but she is mixing paint with wallpaper paste. Unless in the US this is something we do not have here, in my country wallpaper paste is a type of glue and I cannot understant for what it is used for.
The little book I already had is the same except that it does not describe in detail the techniques. Also it is much cheaper and is also available from Amazon. The decorating schemes presented are exactly the same. No new projects are presented.
So if you are looking for ideas buy the other book. If you want details by this one but DO NOT buy both.

I decided to paint my own kitchen cabinets using the faux finish style that is so attractive and popular today. In order to decide on the perfect method and style for my room I ordered 3 different books on painting finishes. I could have saved myself alot of money and just ordered this one book. It truly is the only book you will need for inspiration and direction. The pictures are large and the text is easy to understand and follow. Ms. Cohen has a classic on her hands that I reccommend to anyone who is interested in the art of faux finishing for the home. It is a must have for all at home art libraries.

I'm a media designer, I will use the techniques that I have learned from this book for my 2D art. That I create with photoshop and painter as well as my 3D work. The book is also great for coming up with ideas for vehicles. Great book for beginners!

A great "jumping-off point" for designing vehicles

When first saw the book sitting on the shelf I thought to myself "Is this another Lee J Ames Draw 50 books?" I opened it up, and I was surprised. The author begins with some reference on modern and historical vehicles, making them armored, military war machines. Also covered are steam-punk, future cars and motorcycles, one creature from myth, and animal-machine hybrids. The illustrations are very good, and the author break down the forms of the vehicles into three dimensional shapes, showing them from three or four angles.

For the total beginner, as well as for the professional illustrator, this book is a true marvel. Even if you don't intend to draw, but simply to have a nice and workable introduction to perspective, this will be a joy to read... And to look at! It is profusely illustrated with the nicest and motivating pictures.
Definitely at the top of the list of art instructional books.
It's great to see it back in print. They'll sell tons of it, too, because every art or architecture student should be adjoined to read it.
Thanks Mr. Norling!

I am delighted to be able to order a copy of this book for my grandson -- now I can KEEP my own copy without guilt. I purchased it many years ago and found it very helpful in its explanations of the subject.

A good introduction to the topic

This slim, amusingly-illustrated book introduces perspective concepts in an entirely unintimidating way. Lightweight, but still useful. Though it is printed as part of the somewhat lowbrow Walter T. Foster How-to series, the author is a true authority - he also wrote the article on perspective for the Encyclopedia Brittanica

Buy this book if you want to facts, plain and simple.
