This was one of the 1st books that inspired me in faux. It is a must have in any faux finish library.

We used some of these clasic techniques and principles in the famous faux house captured in the hot new book "The House that Faux Built: Transform Your Home with Paint, Plasters and Creativity" The House That Faux Built

Shows step by step exciting and new techniques that maybe one wouldn't' have thought of ((or have the nerve to do)). If you get get stuck in what to do, just flip through and it will get your " creative juices" flowing!!

This may be a great book - probably is, but the search inside feature is entirely wasted, because the pages they show you do not show you what the finished product looks like! Instead they show the pages devoted to process. Now that's stupid. THAT should be the information they withhold, while showing the (supposedly) fabulous results.

I won't buy this book unless I someday stumble upon it in a bookstore and can browse through it - and like the effects their methods produce.

I bought this book more than ten years ago, I have an almost complete collection of books on painted finished, especially of wood and marble. The "Professional Painted Finishes" is absolutely the best I have, it is oozing QUALITY throughout. It is not for beginners but is The reference to return to again and again. It is also lovely just to browse through.

I am an artist and tend to learn art things quickly. However, I am a very slow learner of anything to do with computers. I now know how to do a lot on Paint Shop Pro from reading this book. I need to just keep studying with the book while at the computer screen. My only real complaint is that the visuals on each page of the book need to be larger. I am more used to stand-out visuals in the computer books which say they are visual learning books. If the size were increased on the visuals, this book could well move up to a 5 star rating.

Once you get through some of the useful techniques in this book you will find yourself inspired to do more. Although the photos could have been more in depth I found this book to be very helpful, especially when working with layered images. I enjoy making my own custom frames now and often refer to this book from time to time when I want to try something new. It's an excellent learning tool that I am glad I purchased.

I am keeping my eyes open for more books by these two authors... I have ever paint shop pro manual listed with amazon.com

but not much explanations. The self explanatory stuff is mentioned and pictured. The hard to explain and also hard to understand processes are dealt with in a few sentences. In one instance, the author refers to the Magnetic Lasso Tool as her favored - the software has no tool by that name.
If you like pictures go for it. By doing so, you are at least buying a book printed in the USA.

When was the last time a "real" artist painted like this? Who else would have thought to use gel pens, dimensional fabric paints, regular fabric paints and dyes, and, best of all, rubber stamps in one painting that can be used in about a million ways? Kahn paints on muslin, but you really can't tell it's fabric. By the time I finished a couple of pieces, I couldn't tell I had painted on fabric either. I think this is a real plus because then you can stick your painting on anything, however rough it may be, and have a beautiful, interesting, and highly unusual piece of art. Don't deprive yourself of it.

Not much new

It would probablky help if I likes Ms.Kahn's work to begin with.
But if you have any surface design books or are playing around with fabric
paints, most of these techniques would be familiar to you. And I felt if I
read the words "as desired" one more time,
I would throw the book out the window.

Glad I got it from the library....

While this book does have some good ideas and techniques, I was put off by the repeated and blatant promotions of the author's line of stamps -- a little too self-serving. Also, since she used only her own stamps in the project examples -- as well as a very limited color palette -- there is a disappointing sameness to the look of the samples. Most books of this type show the work of multiple artists: More variety of styles and colors would have made Kahn's book much more interesting and inspiring.

So, while I did come away with some ideas that I will use, I'm very glad that I borrowed the book from the library, rather than paying for it.

I enjoyed the instructions in this book. First, a detailed explanation of how to complete each type of stroke is given. Then, the book has detailed information on how to paint many different types of flowers and arrangements. And finally,(this is the best part) it goes on to explain how to create original arrangements depending on the surface space the painter has to work with. This book was well written and easy to follow

This book is awesome! I have many of Donna's books but this is my favorite. I've been painting using the One Stroke method for about 5 months and I'm HOOKED! I've taken 13 classes with my local OSCI since then, which is the best way to improve your OS painting skills, but this book is a great compliment to those classes. Donna uses about 15 pages in the beginning of the book to go over materials, techniques and colors. Then she covers 50 flowers/blooms using 2 pages for each. The picture of her finished piece is a full page and of course very colorful. Then on the opposite page it lists the brushes and paints you'll need and a step by step guide on how to paint the flower(s). But it doesn't stop there. She uses 14 pages at the end to cover filler flowers and floral composition. Finally the last 2 pages are a gallery of floral project ideas. This is an invaluable resource! Enjoy!

This book could well be titled " Bondo and exotic paint application" or "painting your chopper" Where would the chopper world be without bondo? They used to call some custom autos "lead sleads" for good reason__more lead body filler than original metal. The jobs is this book are the equivalent__"bondo bikes".
If you want a handbook to help you through restoring and old bike or just redoing your daily ride, look somewhere else.

Let's face it, a lot about motorcycling is vicarious. Our bikes emulate certain genres, as does our clothing, and style of riding. Reading this book I felt that... maybe doing work of some similarity was possible. And hey, how many women are that deep into cycle art? The graphics, explanations and photography are excellent. Best of all, it is insight into how an artist of Joann Bortles caliber approaches her projects from conception to completion. Now, how to talk my way into someones paintbooth?

When I decided my VROD needed painting I was floored at how much people charged. I decided to try and do it myself so I started shopping for books. This is one of the books I bought.

In general the book is OK for an absolute beginner such as myself. It is obvious the publisher wanted lots of pictures and not a lot of words. Many details of technique were glossed over or simply not inculded, and it is obvious the author is very skilled in these subjects.

As is often the case, this is not a book that will answer all your questions or cover all your needs. But I did walk away with one technique that I feel "made" my paint job in the end and that is the concept of using "guide coats".

It is worth the money, but barely. But that is a lot more than I can say for numerous other books on the subject. The failures of this book are the publishers, not the authors.

Inspired by religion, sexuality, racism and family
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2004-08-17
Eric Payne's "I See Through Eyes", a collection of short stories and poetry, chronicles life as a black man inspired by religion, sexuality, racism and family. Payne appropriately categorizes his works into six divisions: Young, Havin' Fun Wide-Eyed & Naïve; Lamentations; Fires of Revelations; Perchance Romance; To Know God; and Liberation. As such, the reader can readily recognize a gradual growth towards individual freedom in each segment.

Payne's poem "Because" reveals deep-rooted [Black] family values, suggesting individuals should step back and be thankful for their present situation established by ancestors whom he claims have "[made] my way clear / blindly moving, not knowing the outcome / working your hands with faithful vigor / for my sake [. . .]" .

While his short story "Insanity Wears High Heels" pokes with the narrator's probable and ultimate sexcapades, readers can still expect a wonderful and purposeful moral as a conclusion. Payne intertwines his knowledge of music with the beats and rhythms of his natural rhyme scheme, eloquently detailed passages, and allusions to Coltrane and Donna Sommer.

There is an ardent need for young, talented writers such as Payne. "I See Through Eyes" easily quenches the appetite of hungry youth who may find relativity in his truths.
Unsuccessfully edited in regard to inconsistencies in style, yet well written, Payne's works effortlessly take a reader back to the oral tradition, where readers are soothed by delicate, precise words and traditional themes of human nature.

"I See Through Eyes" by Eric Payne is a window into the soul of a young African American male as he goes about the chore of daily life in America. The poems are filled with reality and emotion.

This collection of poetry is divided into six sections, they are: 1) Young Havin' Fun Wide Eyed & Naive 2) Lamentations 3) Fires of Revelation 4) Perchance Romance 5) To Know God 6) Liberation. My favorite section is "Lamentations" because it deals with feelings of the heart. In "The Phone Call" the poet reflects on Shannon a woman that he dated that had it all together, and he thought that they were both equally interested in each other. Then Shannon suddenly drops out of sight. The poet wages an internal battle with himself as to whether he should call her or just leave the situation alone. I know that at one point in my life I was in the same situation as the poet,so I could definitely relate to his plight.

I really enjoyed "I See Through Eyes" and look forward to reading more of Eric Payne's work. On the RAW scale "I See Through Eyes" is a 4.

This brotha's work is eyeopening. With poems like "the neighbor" and "if I was white, I wonder", he tells it like it is. It's amazing how poetry can touch one's heart. A friend of mine saw my copy of this book and read it. It nearly brought tears to her eyes. Everyone should see through this brotha's eyes. Get the Book and tell a friend.

When you hear folks say that Eric Payne's book, I SEE THROUGH EYES, is filled with poetry and prose that has the ability to capture young minds and make old ones pause in deep reflection, then, you better believe it! I found that long after I finished reading this book, I could hear or see something in my day that would bring to mind certain poems from this collection.

This book consists of six sections with seven to thirteen narrative poems and prose pieces per section. From the beginning of the book to the end, Eric allows readers to see through his eyes and intimate thoughts some of the concerns, frustrations, and celebrations in the experiences of men. He articulates clearly in, "The Neighbor" and "If I Was White, I Wonder," the struggles black men often have with racism and social acceptance. He describes man's spiritual nature and reverence for God succinctly in, "Man," "Faith," and "There is No God." Poems like, "The Phone Call," "Variation on The Phone Call," "When," and "My Heart," depicts the anxieties they feel when finding love or facing heartaches. Then that sexy little Haiku titled, "Sunrise" along with poems, "Braggadocious" and "Petals Against My Skin," are so sensual and passionate that they are guaranteed to make a woman smile.

Reading I SEE THROUGH EYES, does capture one's attention and rocks like a lover as Bernice McFadden, author of SUGAR and THE WARMEST DECEMBER states on the book's cover. I enjoy reading poetry and I especially enjoyed this book and this writer's intimate thoughts about issues that are not always expressed openly by men. I look forward to reading more by Eric Payne in the future!

This book has extremely detailed illustrations which are quite helpful. The author demonstrates differences between right and wrong techniques, using pictures of each technique to show exactly what the effects of the techniques are. His writing style is relaxed, but not sloppy. The overall effect is a comfortable but precise learning experience. When you finish a section or chapter, you feel that you've had a meaningful learning experience, and captured some essential aspect of either Web graphics in general or the PSP program in particular.

This book was not written using PSP 5.0 so some of the items do not apply. In addition, Mr.Clark is merely showing some of his personal techniques while using the program, but provides no hands-on assistance to the beginning level user. This is not written for PSP 5, so the user has to "translate" regularly. The author takes you through basic skills and then helps users explore his favorite tools and techniques.

There are many step-by-step directions for replicating the author's self-proclaimed "really cool, really hot" web graphic techniques. Much of what you learn you can transfer to meet your own needs, but the author is extremely self centered in his writing style, which may offend many. (Me, for instance.)

By reading this book, you can learn how to do what the author has done, not maximize your own use of PSP.

The book was written for an earlier version of PSP than I have, so I had to make some slight modifications to a few tutorials, but it was still extremely helpful. I no longer use canned graphics or flat images on my web sites. I now have 3-D great looking graphics, and it couldn't be easier after reading PSP Web Techniques. Thanks to T. Michael Clark! Can't wait for another PSP book from him.

I'm pretty familiar with books on painting and decorating and have quite a few. This book will soon become one of my staples. Not only are the decorating ideas fresh and good looking, but he gives whole room views instead of a little color swatch of what the finish looks like. I ordered 10 painting books at the same time and this was the only one I kept. I'm starting on my first big project out of this book next month. I would even rate this book and author higher than Debbie Travis because his instructions are easier and his projects are less "primitive" looking than hers. She was my previous mentor so this is saying a lot.
