Hazel Harrision has created a wonderful art instruction book that delivers more than I realized it would. Drawing, watercolour, oil & acrylic and pastel - just some of the sub areas of this book. It really will teach you somethng. I thought I was kind of an artist and after going through this book I found how much I did not know. I really needed this book.

I highly recommend this book as a gift to any budding artist in your life. No matter on little or how much they know - this book will be of value. It really is one great teaching tool. It is like taking a class on art.

This book covers all the media and many techniques of drawing. I would not have this instead of Parramon's "Drawing in Penicl", but it is nevertheless very helpful.

I am an absolute beginner to art and pastels. I have purchased about 20 books on painting with pastels.Only 3 have been helpful to any great extent. In order to be good for beginners, a pastel book needs to assume you know nothing about art, go step by step with technique and colors needed with pics. This book is great in its progression. You make a pic with one color, then two and so on.If you are a TRUE beginner , buy this book, You Can Paint Pastels by Marie Blake, and Pastel Workbook by Jackie Simmonds. Save all the rest until later because they all are a bit more advanced.

Simple text and simple drawing of Leo the zoo lion who learns to and then starts painting is a great little book to read to the young ones in your family. Actually I like using this one with the K-1 through 1st graders. The art work is simple and the text is quite within the ability of beginning readers. It is rather a shame this one is out of print.

This is an inspiring book on letting go and letting art come from you without your internal critic or judgements on meaning or technique. It is about Learning from Art; and letting art take you where it will. It is about discovery and play -- ultimately it is about how to get into the Process of Creating.... and stop worrying about the "product"

This is one of those books that I read and instantly thought of five friends I wanted to share it with. And it also helped jump start me to believe in making what I make; not to worry if it is too dark, too silly, too profane, too honest and vulnerable; and not to try to direct it to what I think it is supposed to be.

The book contains short chapters about challenges and personal accounts. It can be just as beneficial to open the book to any page and read what is there as a jumping-off spot. It does not tell you "how" to create your work -- but it shares why, and it also shares methods for loosening the restrictions and the blocks. "What" you create will come from you.

Sometimes living in the world is a challenge with all the other concerns and critiques of other people...but if we keep growing and learning and making/creating -- it can keep us going! Art is a respite for me; it is what gives me meaning and value in my life, it is what gives me energy. I love this book and am always referring to it when I am deciding to do a DIY project in my home. I love color and this book explains all the different ways you can use paint - not only to add color, but patterns and texture as well. Paint has come a long way! It's still of the most inexpensive ways to change the look of your home and now with all the new faux techniques, the possibilities are endless.
