Mr. Cranshaw makes it really simple
Helpful Votes: 47 out of 47 total.
Review Date: 2001-02-05
The author/artist has the gift of taking complex painting subjects (landscapes, animals, people) and expressing their nature in simple strokes of watercolor. The effect is far from simple; it's that stripped-down-to-the-essentials that makes watercolors so appealing yet difficult to learn. One or more strokes of the brush, and you've gone too far and the painting is overworked and wrong. This book will help you over that perenniel problem.

Mr. Cranshaw's book is full of examples on which you can learn, copy and base your own outdoor and studio painting. His sense of fun is never far away. I have other books from this author and I did some really great paintings of cattle immediately and easily after reading and trying his methods. If you want to simplify and improve your watercolor, get some good techniques for plein-air (outdoors) work, I can't recommend this book enough.

The perfect introduction

I wish I'd found this book when I was just starting. I'm an intermediate watercolor student who loves books on technique and buys them frequently. But even as someone who's been painting on and off for a few years, I delighted in finding Mr. Crawshaw's book at the library recently. It's chock-full of simple but useful demos--starting with a carton box, for instance--and progresses to fruits, vegetables, still lifes, animals, landscapes, people and water. The text is minimal and practical. Just last week I painted some fruits from his exercise and they were the best I've painted. An instructor teaching true beginners should at least know about this book, and beginners or even intermediate students looking for some simplified exercises from which to practice should try it. I may even add it to my collection.

Lots of Babes
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-05
Not only are there 50 manga babes, but there are tips on setting up your studio, a good list of materials, and books and videos of the best of manga/anime to review. The only problem as I see it is that the book is heavily oriented towards digital work instead of hands-on drawing. Each section (babe) has a particular set of tips, which are helpful, but it would have been better to have more of these, even at the cost of increasing the size and cost of the book. I would be willing to pay more for more advice.

A gem

Though small in size, every page on this book is full of useful tips, ideas and inspiration! In its first part, the book explores colors, textures, elements of design and composition, then it proceeds to show various ways in which you can create an abstract, all written in a clear language and accompanied by drawings and pictures at every step to clarify it. You could work on the tips in this book for at least one whole year! A gem. I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in exploring abstract painting.

Drawing and color lessons

Ken Goldman is a talented artist and teacher who has a gift for explaining with clarity the ways to go about pastels. Examples of his work are included in this excellent book, with fine color fidelity. The practical advice he gives at the beginning is invaluable; and the instructive sections equally so.

I found this book on amazon, bought it on a whim and was pleasantly surprised! There are some beautiful images to copy such as a fruit still life, shoes, wine and cheese, flowers, etc... I think that people who are learning to paint with acrylic will find this to be an excellent learning tool.

Comprehensive information on American Car Paint codes
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 1998-07-06
This book provides the reader with factory paint codes and descriptions for American cars built from 1945-95. It is particularly valuable for car restorers/collectors who are in the process of repainting their car and need to know the correct color. A restored car is always worth more if it is painted in the original factory color.

Lynne Carver has struck gold with "Animal Lover"! It's a fast-moving, dramatic and emotional read. The characters, and undoubtedly the author, are dedicated animal lovers, who don't mind sticking their necks out to defend our animal companions. I couldn't put it down and am looking forward to Carver's next book.
