I tagged this book as Historical Fiction and Historical Romance but I also have to say that it is very much a comedy too.
The story revolves around the Hudson Twins and their Mother's attempts to help facilitate an excellent match. Cadence loves piano and Florence loves to Paint. The twins are quite different in their personalities. Cadence is calm and quiet, while Florence is more flamboyant and carefree. Their Father, Mr. Hudson, is hilarious in his incessant teasing of the family members. The town is full of quite entertaining busybodies who are constantly curious about all their neighbors, most especially the Hudson girls. I became very intrigued by all the twists and turns of the story and was delightfully surprised by the ending. I highly recommend it.

Paint and Piano is a witty page-turner, which reads even more like a Jane Austen favorite than Bennett Williamson's first two historical romance novels. There are plenty of well-rounded characters in this wonderful approach to the subject of marrying off one's daughters.

I ordered this book after first glance at it in my North Light catalog this month! I have just touched the surface on admiring the first few works of art in the book and am so impressed with the artist's expert use of color, technique and eye for beauty. I look forward to exploring the book in depth and trying some of the demonstrations. This is a wow book, very inspiring and uplifting, one every artist should have for reference! Nice work, Ms. Sheffer!

Nicely done.

This book is packed with imaginative, fun painting projects that children will love. I teach art to children k-5th grade and can't wait to use these projects. The lessons are step by step, colorful and easy to understand. You'll find yourself saying " wow I can do that with paint"

I am slowly colorizing a newer off-white condo. I have about a million paint charts in a drawer, and I frequently pull them out and ponder colors, and occasionally I pick out a color and paint a room. I recently borrowed this book from the library, and now I'm buying my own copy. It's a timeless resource on color schemes because it's based on colors found in nature.

The book highlights six schemes - arctic, ocean, forest, earth, desert and kaleidoscope (kaleidoscope is not based on nature). Each scheme is introduced with outdoor photographs, then the color schemes are moved indoors and translated into home decor. The results are awesome, and have really helped me focus my color choices.

I bought this book for my 3 & 4 year olds. The pictures are fun and imaginative. Best of all, the face paints are like crayons and wash off very easily. They are able to face paint themselves with very little mess or help from me.

Easy-to-follow pictures for painting terrific party faces.

We got "Percy's Fancy Face Paint Party" at my child's nursery school book fair about ten years ago. It is still our most-consulted resource for faces for costume parties and Hallowe'en.

The face paints are very high-quality and they do not stain skin or clothes. I intend to order it again just for the paints, and so that both our daughters can have a copy for their kids.

"Springtime is a good time to get serious about home improvement. And one of the cheapest and best ways to make things look better inside and out is to add a fresh coat of paint. The Better Homes and Gardens folks have sponged, rolled, brushed, sprayed, masked, stenciled, layered, mixed colors, and painted just about everything they could find, from walls, rugs, lamps, and chairs, to tables and outdoor playhouses. And they have written this book to show their readers exactly how each project is done." (summary by South TX Library System)

Normally I don't reveiw books without a specific author; however; when I saw this book had not been reveiwed I knew it deserved to get more attention. This is not your typical BH&G book. It is very artistically done with great color photos, easy instructions; lots of awesome, artistic, brightly colored designs and admittedly it's a beautifully done work of art. I especially enjoyed the great outdoors section; a swinging tire painted with a brightly colored design could make any kids yard come alive! The trio of colored urns would liven up any front porch. Anyway; if you are looking for something NEW; bright, bold and unique to create for your home or yard; you should be inspired after looking at this one! Be creative; don't just "stencil" your next peice of work! Surprise; surprise; surprise!

I love this book, so much so i'm buying a similar one by the same author. There are lots of pictures and she shows how to do some simple and creative things which add depth, texture and interest. Easy to follow and easy to imagine your own ideas. And a beginner can easily find projects here to do.

This is a fun book if you would like to learn about lots of different techniques for painting and decorating birdhouses. The focus is on pre-built, un-finished birdhouses that would be used primarily for indoor use. The author has divided her book into city houses and country houses, and has included some cute seasonal decorating ideas as well.

A very unique and interesting perspective on color

I am a man and can never go into a paint or hardware store and pick out a color that I like. After reading Sally's book, I gained a whole new perspective on choosing the colors that I love. Her new and unique way of looking at color, illustrated by extraordinary pictures -some everyday and some of views I hope to see one day - gave me a new way finding the colors that are compatible to my lifestyle, likes and dislikes. Her outdoor scenes and colors truly speak to me.

Color for your Heart

I love this new book of Sally Fretwell's. Unlike most designers and color theorists who try to show you how to use color to its best advantage in interior spaces, Sally does the opposite. She offers her readers a way to relate to color on their own terms to find what they respond to the most.

This is an extraordinary difference and one which helps retrain the eye and allow the heart to sing out: "Oh, I love that color!"

Her book works because of the top-notch photography and tight focus on color in a variety of settings - not just interior rooms. The photographs are stunning, vivid, rich.

As I turned the pages, the colors literally sang out. A must read for anyone looking to decorate, try something new, or encourage a friend.

My "First Little Golden Book"

"Martha's House" is the first, "First Little Golden Book" that I recall from my childhood. I acctually still have it today, with its back cover missing. It sure was and still is a well loved book. "Martha's House" has its own story in my family. While cooking lunch recently with my six aunts, we were all discussing our favorite books. Of coarse, I said, "My favorite book would have to be "Martha's House." My aunts all turned around and looked at me as if I had exposed some deep dark secret of theirs. Then they all just bursted out laughing. While I was standing there in awe, my aunt Ellen explained this,... One day, her husband, Mike was babysitting my cousin Catherine. Catherine was around 2 or 3 at the time, and "Martha's House" was her favorite book too. Anyway, He made the mistake and told Catherine, "No!" Catherine was one of those children that had never heard the word "No" before, so naturally she threw a fit. She ended up hiding under his bed and refused to come out unless he would read "Martha's House." Poor Uncle Mike had to read her that book about 50 times that day. Ever since then, Uncle Mike looks sick if you even mention the book. "Martha's House" written by Edith Kunhardt, is a precious children's book. It has friendly illustations by Carolyn Bracken. If you have ever read it, you know it doesn't tell story, but it does invite you into Martha's house to eye all that she wants to show. I love this book even as a teenager today. I will always love it and hope to pass it to my children one day. I suggest that you buy it for any girl of any age, and they will love it and treasure it forever, because it allows us all to remember home.

A simple step by step guide for beginning watercolorists
Helpful Votes: 54 out of 54 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-11
From his reassuring (you can do this!) introduction to his beautifully illustrated and explanations on the techniques of creating a watercolor painting you can be proud of, Dowden succeeds in writing a book that can actually teach a newbie how to paint with watercolors. Each section of the book is laid out the same: illustrations show what colors you will be using for a project, and what type of paper, brushes and other materials to use. Then Dowden gives a written description of what you are to do, step by step, followed by clear photographs of each step as it is done. Topics include needed materials, use of color, washes, and many different techniques like mottling and sponging to make paintings interesting. Dowden finishes the book with ten projects the new painter can do if s/he follows the steps illustrated and discussed. I am a new painter, took some lessons which weren't helpful, bought several books which intimidated me, and finally found the book that actually gave me the courage to stop reading and start painting!

Outstanding book for beginners

I agree with the above review. This is a wonderfully written book filled with great photos and step-by-step directions to learn watercolor techniques. The 10 projects are beautiful and the directions are clear. The book is well-organized, and takes you step-by-step through the various techniques in watercolor. It's a beautiful book to learn watercolors from.
