We went to England in July 2008 for a 2 week trip and found this book extremely useful! During our trip, we drove over 1500 miles and went from London to Cornwall to Nottingham and didn't get lost thanks to this great book! It was very easy to use and the internet websites it references were helpful too!

A Guide to Britain's oldest national park...
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-21
This 2007 version of the AA Leisure Guide to the Peak District is a terrific resource for planning and enjoying a vacation in Britain's oldest and still very impressive national park.

Located south and east of Manchester in the center of England, the Peak District features a beautiful collection of landscapes, including moderate hills, long ridgelines, cliffs, remote moors, and pretty river valleys. If the scale of the hills here is less than, say, the Cairngorms in Scotland, they are likely to be more user-friendly to the average walking-fit tourist. The Peak District is also home to several old resort towns, including Buxton and Matlock, and to a collection of impressive private homes open to visitors, including Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall.

The guide covers the Peak District in five geographic sections: The Dark Peak, the White Peak, Buxton and the Western Moors, the Southern Dales, and the Derwent Valley and Eastern Moors. The format notes the essential sights for each section and their location on a map graphic, provides directions for driving tours, and details at least one extended walk and one cycling tour per section. General information on the Peak District, such as transportation considerations and the location of pubs and tea rooms, is also included. An impressive selection of color photographs provides a good sense of the landscapes and of the more popular attractions. A couple of large-scale maps in the back permit navigation into and through the Peak District from the nearest big cities.

This updated guide is very highly recommended as a planning and touring resource for those intended to visit the Peak District.

An excellent source of plot synopses and other information.
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1997-01-04
Professor Bayley's An ABC of Shakespeare provides plot synopses for all of the plays, lists sources Shakespeare probably accessed, and gives biographical information about relevant translators and authors like Arthur Golding, Montaigne, and Ovid. The plot synopses here are more lengthy and detailed than those found in the Oxford Companion to English Literature. In addition, the book includes many short articles about other topics of note in Elizabethan society in Shakespeare's day. A compact work, this book is easily carried to the theater.

A well-researched and thorough history of the British slave trade
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-15
Richard Reddie's book is a well-researched and broad in scope history of the Transatlantic Slave Trade which existed for 276 years. He explores the events leading up to the slave trade, painting a picture of a cultured and learned Africa which became a point in the triangular trade route - from Europe firearms, alcohol, brass, copper and manufactured goods were transported to Africa; slaves were taken in Africa and transported by the `Middle Passage' to the West Indies and America; then sugar, tobacco, rum and molasses from America were transported to Europe. Research suggests up to 15 million enslaved Africans died because of this trade and their treatment by the Europeans makes very sobering reading - especially as Christians weren't only those trying to abolish the trade but were often those who participated and benefited from it.

William Wilberforce and the other abolitionists, such as John Newton, Thomas Clarkson and the freed slave Olaudah Equiano are shown as people who worked tirelessly against the slave trade but also as people who were fallible and whose 19th century view of Africans unable to determine their own lives feels rather uncomfortable to us today. The book is an informative and yet sobering read about an alternative holocaust, one in which many Christians colluded and whose revenues founded some of our largest institutions. It makes for uncomfortable reading but it is an aspect of our history which must not be ignored.

Lee's thesis - that the increased medicalization of women's reproductive lives has lead to a tendency to describe and explain such experiences with reference to mental illness and disease - is unique, and she argues it well and convincingly. In doing so, she exposes the similarities between the arguments of the antiabortion lobby and the arguments put forward by those who claim that giving birth can harm women's mental health, i.e. that both experiences - birth and abortion - can bring on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Lee goes so far as to say that motherhood is now regarded as the more problematized choice.

Fascinating book, well-written and definitely worth a read.

A detailed history of witch-hunting and persecution in Scotland from approximately 1658-1662
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-07
An Abundance Of Witches: The Great Scottish Witch-Hunt is a detailed history of witch-hunting and persecution in Scotland from approximately 1658-1662, an era generally thought to be the high point of a turbulent history of violence and hatred for accused witches. The turmoil of political history, Scotland's previous time as an English province, and the revived fervor of Calvinist religion in the Scottish Church accentuated the internal conflict. An Abundance Of Witches does not shy from sometimes horrifying details, including calculated tallies of men and women strangled or burned alive at the stake, fees paid to those involved in hunting, capturing, and executing witches; materials, components, and implements of torture used for such purposes, a search for the psychological motivations behind the slaughter, and more. An excellent and scholarly contribution to Scottish and European history shelves.

I used it prior to an MBA course and I could have passed the Core Financial Analysis class on day one.

UK-centric though!!
