Highlights pro and cons especially in relation to women

Book brings in technical case-study of the Maori culture and
mixes it with easier-to-follow aspects in the life of a cherished elder. It surprised me to learn how cruel and degrading the Maori men treated women, as a practice of culture. Sisters, my sisters, we still have a long way to go. Also, the book discusses how the church influenced changes. I found it shocking that a women was traded off to the church in a bargain of peace? Piece of what?!

If you want to learn about the Tasmanian tiger this is a good starting point. Before purchasing this book my only knowledge of the Tasmanian Tiger (Thylacine ) was that in the early 19th centuary they were wiped out.Sometimes on tv you might see the old black & white newsreel of the "Tiger" walking around , then the yawn showing a alligator smile full of teeth. The reason correct or not was that they were sheep-killers and the government paid a bounty on every Thylacine killed. Soon in a matter of years it was gone. This book has many black & white photos(25+) and stories of early setlers encounters. The more recent sightings in the 1990's might prove that it has survived past 1936.That was the year that the last known "Tiger", Benjamin died alone in the Beaumaris Zoo. After reading this book I hope (like the author) that it still roams the wilds trying to survive mankind.

A Most Important Book at a Most Important Time of My Life

Simply put, "Tight Spaces" is an excellent read. But not an easy one. Anyone who what ever been through some thangs, knows the pain of reading through those thangs. You may have to weep, put the book down and reflect on your life, and where you're headed. Not that the book is all (or even mostly) pain. Sometimes, you just need a silent moment to reflect on the meaning of the purposeful words on the page.

This book is my prized posession. I thank my favorite professor for giving it to me 14 years ago.

Great Book about Canadian/American History
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-20
"To the Outskirts of Habitable Creation" by Stuart Scott is a very readable, and scrupulously researched account of the actual armed invasion of Canada by Americans. The story covers events leading up to the Rebellion of 1837, as it is known, through to the capture and punishment of both the Canadian "patriots" and American combatants. Following their capture, trial and numerous executions, ninty-two US citizens and Canadians were transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) for a life of penal servitude. The story ends with a recounting of the efforts undertaken by many to secure the release and repatriation of the US citizens, which was accomplished after 4 long years.

Events during this period actually began along the Canadian/American border from Michigan in the West to New England in the East. Specific military action took place along the Great Lakes in Western New York. Having lived there myself for quite a few years, it was fascinating to read the story, considering many of the places, and buildings are extant. This account contains a wealth of information about the participants, including family relationships, names, and their final resting places. As such, I believe this book is a valuable resource for anyone from the Great Lakes region interested in geneaology. "To the Outskirts..." contains copious footnotes, references and explanations that allows the reader to find out more information and sources on particular situations that may be of personal interest.

I enthusiastically recommend anyone interested in this eventful period of Canadian/American history to read Stuart Scott's fine work.

A Well written introducton

This is a well written general introducton to New Zealand, and is a bt more than just a "Traveller's History". Chambers explains how the geology affected the geography of the region, and how this in turn determined the development of flora and fauna. The ethnographical dscusssion is interesting and written with considerable wit. I found the modern history to be intriguing, and beware the MMP! The book has nice maps and line drawngs and a good bibliography. I am at a loss, however as why one would need the historical gazetteer or list of rulers.

Learning from the Aboriginals
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-04-10
For a long time we thought that the Australian Aboriginals almost
vanished because of their inferior culture compared to ours. Treading
Lightly convincingly demonstrates that the bad fate of this indigenous
people had nothing to do with the superiority of our culture or
knowledge. On the contrary, the Aboriginal culture has existed much
longer than the Western civilization. The battle was mainly fought on a
biological level, where our diseases proved to be stronger. Having
realized that the Aboriginal culture is the most sustainable that has so
far existed on Earth, Sveiby asks himself and Tex Scuthorpe what are the
elements of sustainable knowledge. Being an expert on Knowledge
Management Sveiby goes forward to suggest how modern organizations could
become truly sustainable. Treading lightly is obviously a path breaking
argument in a discourse that has just begun.

i have looked through a lot of things through the internet about bone carving. though it may sound grotesque, it doesnt really have to be out of human bones... for my hawaiian fishhook making, i used the femur bone of a cow. someone taught me how to make fishhooks and my interests in making them never dissipated. rare books like these are hard to pass up. spark your interest in a beautiful and rare art.
