This book was really handy to have in New Zealand to identify some of the birds that we saw. It has the scientific name, common name, photograph, and description for each bird. It is one of the Penguin (publisher) Pocket Guides, so it is small and easy to carry with you.

I gave this book as a gift to a friend who just returned from New Zealand as a memento of her trip. She loved it, and as she looked through it she remarked how typical the photos are of her experience.

This book is full of wonderful and beautiful pictures. The book captures the true beauty that NZ has to offer on all the islands. I like how the book is divided into subjects like forests, mountains and lakes, farmlands and coasts. Fabulous book to see things as they really are and to appreciate the beauty the country has to offer.

This book covers every aspect of travel in New Zealand. Especially helpful for the first time traveler are the maps of the north and south islands at the beginning of the book which list the pages where information on the major tourist attractions can be found. Powell tells you what he likes and what he doesn't like and alerts you to the typical tourist traps that all serious travelers wish to avoid.

This is a marvelous book. It is in Samoan only, but even if you are just
a beginner it is great to have a real Samoan text that - unlike the
Samoan Bible - represents authentic Samoan culture and history.
And an added plus - it marks all the long vowels and glottal stops.

Nga Pepeha a Nga Tipuna is a definitive and exhaustive anthology of the sayings and proverbs of the Mâori people of Aotearoa (New Zealand).
Such sayings remain a feature of mâori life, and are especially used in oratory. For mâori a work such as this is a tâonga, a treasure. For others wanting to gain an appreciation of mâori and their world view, the assembled pepeha offer a window into that.

High praise for Kanze's "NOTES FROM NEW ZEALAND"
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 1998-03-03

"NOTES FROM NEW ZEALAND" by Edward Kanze, is an entertaining and educational book about travel and New Zealand natural history. The author succeeds not only in bringing the reader along on his adventures, but also in introducing them to and teaching them about much of New Zealand's unique ecology. Kanze traveled to New Zealand as a naturalist pursuing a personal quest to find and see three rare endemic species-- the kiwi, the tuatara, and a type of New Zealand frog which lacks ear drums and vocal sacs. During the author's three trips to this island country he explored it alone and as a member of several scientific research expeditions. As you read, you begin to realize that you too are developing a fondness for the country and charming people much as Ed Kanze did. From slogging along the Milford Track high in the mountains to laboring to catch tuatara in the forest after midnight on remote offshore islands, you share in the humor, the victories, and the failures which all came together creating this rich tapestry of events.

"NOTES FROM NEW ZEALAND" shares Kanze's adventures in a journal format. This style presents plenty of information, while still maintaining a refreshing narrative. Kanze certainly provides an intriguing glimpse into the bounteous treasures which New Zealand has preserved on her green shores for these thousands of years. One cannot help but consider what it would be like to embark upon a personal journey to New Zealand in order to experience these wonders first-hand. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in adventure travel or natural history. Kanze is an excellent author who has penned several other books, and to whom I look for new works in the future.

SUPERB OVERVIEW OF OCEANIC ART
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-29
The book gives an excellent overview of the art in the Oceanic region with special emphasis on New Guinea.

The contributions are organised geographically and then by tribes. The book not only depicts extraordinary and seldom documented works of art from museums and private collections but also provides valuable information on the ethnological and social context of the works displayed.

Photographs and layout are outstanding and the printing is of the highest quality.

It is a must for all those interested in the art of the region or in tribal art in general.

A very good summary of Malacca's rich history
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1997-04-08
Hoyt has not done any injustice in summarising Malacca's last 500 odd years in 80 pages. This is certainly one of the better history books I've read. It reads like a novel, I felt I was back in old Malacca, in the thick of all the action, living through the Portugese, Dutch and British occupation. I have recently returned from Malacca and it was exactly the way Hoyt has told it. I reminded myself, this book is not fiction, its real, these things happened and how wonderful to have somebody like Hoyt to write it
