This book was purchased for a child 10 yrs of age, he and I read the book together going over different pointers for raising and learning about the Golden Retriever we got as a puppy. It was extremely informational and I recommend it to anyone who is going to get a puppy of the same breed.

In this way she reminds me of the wonderful author of SEABISCUIT, the one who has agoraphobia and won't go to her own book signings. And yet this author, caught up in fiction, has other interests besides horseflesh. One of the best stories here has nothing to do with the breed, and that is "Magic Lantern," which investigates the mystery of photography by focussing on the relict of a now-dead photographer genius, who made oodles of pictures of her the way Stieglitz obsessively photographed Georgis O'Keeffe, and how the "widow" feels when she must develop all these photos after his death, for him who is no longer here to do so. The model, Barbara, becomes the model of another phhotographer; wise Charlotte, observing their love affair, ponders the affinities between the "shutter" of the camera and the dangerous shudder of orgasm. Both let you into places that sometimes, one regrets having seen. And the author has unexpected reserves of a Barney-Fife like humor (warning, mild spoilers ahead)"

Great book if you can find it. I have been luck enough to have bought three over the past few years. I have had Himalayan(himalayan is a COLOR not a breed) Persians for over 12 yrs. and have been showing this classic Persian for 5 yrs. This book is filled with great information about the breed, showing, pedigrees, history and loaded with pictures of famous cats who have helped develop the Himalayan Persian of now. It's also interesting to see the "old time" breeders in the book. Even more fun that I know many of them and their cats/pedigrees which help make up my lines today. Again if you can find this book...snap it up!

This book was very informative, with extremely helpful photographs. The material addressed the various types of Milksnakes and Kingsnakes in a clear if somewhat lofty manner.
Much of the material does seem directed to breeders, as opposed to the pet snakekeeper.

This book is one of the best Kingsnake books I have ever read. Fun to read! Applegate, being one of the most famous breeders, he tells many of his experiences, from how he started out loving these colubrids. Not only that, this book is direct and displays so many useful information and even explains thoroughly how to solve a problem feeder which tends to be the young Grey Banded Kingsnake. I found this book very entertaining and fun to read, I actually read it about 3 times after purchasing it only a couple weeks ago. Not only entertaining, this book displays many beautiful photos. It gives facts about when and how often you should feed your kingsnake for optimum growth. From the beginners Kingsnake owner to someone who wants to be a professional breeder this book is a must. Every Kingsnake owner should add this book to their collection!

This book was the first book that approached the subject of genetic coding with such a clearity that I was thrilled to read something on this subject that I could finally understand. Thank-you Debby for such a helpful book.

Ms. Nicholas' credentials are incredible and she has been involved with dogs most all her life. She judged her first show in 1934 and has written many books. Her knowledge of the canine species and the Maltese breed is evident in her no-nonsense style of writing. Her approach to the book includes history, care, grooming, showing and more.

This is the first book on Maltese that I have read which includes a detailed background of the major Maltese kennels in the U.S. It was exciting to see a photo of one of the champion ancestors of my new little puppy, Oswald (11 weeks old). Plus, I now know the history of the other champions in Oswald's lineage.

If you are considering showing your dog, this book explains the point system and dog events wonderfully. I could visualize the event as I read her description. Plus, I now clearly understand the mammoth task it is to earn a champion status.

Overall, the book is a good read, well organized, and worth the purchase price. It's one you will reference again and again.

This book solves many of the mysteries found in Quarter Horse pedigrees by making the NQHBA information available. The format is set up like a stud book and includes much information missing from AQHA's database. A very thorough index is the icing on the cake...

This book takes the reader for a ride through 20th century Minnesota and "Iowa's Great Lakes." Sprinkled with charm, history, and Midwest Americana, nuggets of insight and wit are awaiting the reader; but, I am intrigued by those puppets. They are introduced at the beginning of the story and then disappear until they bring a delightful ending twist -- I only fear they have gone! Returned to New Orleans as they had threatened. I met the author and inquired of them but he didn't say if they were still around. Maybe he is waiting for them to return -- perhaps, they are waiting for him to return to them!
