Pretty good book. It has lots of pictures and ideas in it for your own doll house. I wish that I had seen the table of contents before I bought it. It didn't have much victorian stuff in it.

This is a wonderful book with many great ideas for making dollhouses. It explains each type of house from the most prominent eras. Tudor, Georgian, Regency, Victorian, Edwardian, and onward just to name a few. It is clearly set up and a joy to read. There are many great color pictures to go along with the text.

I Will Purchase This Book

I will buy this book soon as a private tribute to a dear friend of mine, Jeff Gray, who is one of the models in the book. I remember him showing me the photos which Robert Mapplethorpe had taken of him. At the time, he doubted that they would ever be published. I did see the book later, but didn't purchase, but I was impressed.

When Jeff was lying in bed in a hospital in San Francisco, I called to inform him that the book had indeed been published. He was thrilled to know that he had been immortalized, for he was dying of AIDS. Jeff never saw the book and didn't have anything negative to say about Robert, whom I never met. I still own a pair of leather pants and a vest Jeffrey designed and made for me.

Has a great depiction of the male body as it should be seen.

Mapplethorpe, with his great photographic potenial produced a riviting book that dignifies the male, black body to the next zenith. He was able to capture the very essence of what it is to be a male and to be viewed as "God's" art or creation and not a male "pig." This book demonstrates the power of the camera when the beholder knows what he/she is doing. The images in this book do not apal me, afend me nor do they disgust me. I enjoyed reading and flipping through this book as a ligitimate art reviewer and as a academic scholar.

Black Is Beautiful

Review Date: 2005-04-14
Published in 1986, Robert Mapplethorpe's BLACK BOOK remains one of my favorite books of photography. Nothing had been published like it previously; nothing comparable has been published since. The book is devoted entirely to shots of black men, some of them naked, some of them not. There are portraits included here as well-- one of my favorites is the stunning portrait of Roedel Middleton on page 70. Some of the images are outrageously beautiful. Many of the models' bodies take on the quality of polished ebony. The four nude photographs of someone named Ajitto in a classical pose-- as are many of the images-- at the beginning of the book are as beautiful as any you will ever see.

It is common knowledge of course now that some of these photographs have been declared obscene (by the likes of Jesse Helms et al.) and racist by some African Americans.(Some of the black men making these allegations, to paraphrase the black poet Don Lee, talk black but sleep white.) According to a less-than-scientific survey by this Caucasian male, there are about 94 photographs included here, only six of them are of body parts-- and I'm not talking here of feet and hands or even behinds here-- 27 are of male nudes with their genitalia exposed, and only in five of them is the model unnamed. Mapplethorpe may well have been a racist, but I fear his critics may have to look elsewhere for proof. An observation or two: his models appear to be willing subjects as no one is tied up or seems to be shot unawares. Secondly, the nature of the male animal of all colors being what it is, there's a good possibility that people having little to offer may have been unwilling to make the sacrifice of giving the viewer the full monty. The artist obviously loved black men and had many black friends as well as lovers. Finally the poet Ntozake Shange has written a beautiful poem as an introduction to this book. Apparently she had no problem with Mapplethorpe's creative vision.

Many of these photographs will last.

Claddagh Your Friends and Lovers

This story is incredibly beautiful. The story of the ring and of the town is really a tribute to the power of love and friendship which both are keys in any kind of relationship from lover to wedding partner to friends of every kind. This book captures the spirit of Ireland, especially Galway Bay where the town of Claddagh provides the setting for the story.

Cherished Symbol of Friendship

The hands are there for friendship,
The heart is there for love.
For loyalty throughout the year,
The crown is raised above

It is extremely rare to find a friend who wants to be friends forever, but when you find them, this is the ring to buy. A Claddagh (klada) ring can be given to friends and is the world's cherished symbol of friendship, love and loyalty.

The happiest day in my life is definitely the day I received a Claddagh Ring. Not only are these rings eternal symbols of friendship, it is a poetic and beautiful representation of love that is steeped in mysterious legends and lore.

The ring is named after a fishing village and Malachy McCourt does a fine job of explaining all the stories surrounding this mysterious ring. This book is filled with stories of Vikings, Algerian Pirates, Legendary Fishermen, Superstitions, Traditions and stories of Mary of the Bridges.

This book is really as much a history of Claddagh as it is about the ring named after the village. It also sheds light on the inventor and how he created the ring while in captivity. Malachy McCourt weaves a fascinating tapestry of stories with humor and a deep interest the history and culture of Ireland.

What amazed me most was the story of 9/11 and how so many Claddagh rings were found on that day. Not only does this ring make its appearance in romantic tales, it has more recently made its appearance in great tragedy. Perhaps it is also now the symbol of the joining of hands to heal hearts.

This book has become my "Collector's bible" since purchase.
The information is concise, informative and the photos are sharp and clear. An excellent book for beginners and established collectors alike because it deals with modern bottles available world wide.
The launch dates are a great asset for those who catalogue and date their collection and the price guide enables buyers to keep perspective when bidding or buying.
One small problem is the indexing which in places is incorrect.

It has brought great joy to my life, I don't know which is more fun-finding my miniatures to purchase or coming home and finding them in Jeri Lyn Ringblums' book. I would purchase any of her work!!!!The color, detail, information about each miniature perfume bottle is wonderful.I would suggest to anyone to buy 2 of her books at a time because the first one will get worn out. Such fun to wear out a Book.

Great minatures for collecting or gameplay
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-28
I have to say I was very impressed with these miniatures. They are highly detailed, durable, artistic and colorful. I like the fact that lead is no longer used in minatues, as it is poisonous and not very durable. These plastic figures are fully and beautifully colored, so no painting is required! Each set is different, containing (sort of like collector cards) common, uncommon and rare figures. A collectors list is included. My set had a dozen figures, including three uncommon and one rare figure. Most of the figures in my set were fighter-types, but it did also contain several monsters.
The box set also contains a full sized play map, which is a grid of stone (pictures) which resembles a dungeon floor. It is about two feet by three feet, and can be used for dungeon combat. Six cards are also included with dungeon settings and walls, do add a little more detail to your battles.
Also included are stat cards, with statistics for all the figures. I'm not going to use these, but they could be fun.

Great, but here's more information.

As one of the previous reviewers pointed out, there is a large single sided, black and white dungeon tiles fold out;like a folded square poster. It's bland and generic IMO but it is extremely useful; if they only included two! or three, or four.. Very useful since u can 'decorate' them according to your party's visual range.

Furthermore, the included terrain tiles(postcard quality) are also single sided, exactly 5X8, and all have different settings. You can't really play on them as they are so small/limited. They serve as a visual aid.

You get 12 miniatures w/ corresponding stat cards(normal)

The rundown, out of the entire collection, 30% ~ 40% stand for 'player' characters; humanoid NPCs, etc. So u might end up with 4 'player' characters like me; it depends on what you're hoping for. The Good!! Large Miniatures(2X2). The Bad, you'll always get the bear; a wolf would've been much better.

For those of you looking to buy your first set, i would recommend the Basic Set(not this one) as you get more, non-randomized, miniatures, solid/set-in coloured tiles, and THE set of dice(expensive if bought seperately; generic ones too).

Packaging could better...

I give this three stars because of the packaging isn't as good as the packaging for the previously Entry Pack. Also, the stat cards for these minis are easier to read and the quality is okay. The rulebook is a must have because it has the updates to the Miniatures Handbook. I haven't played the game yet but it looks easy to play.

Reading this little book made me realize that I have become more of my father than I ever thought possible. All of the usual Dadisms are in the book...and if you don't think you're using them, try reading the book. This would make a great gift for Father's Day...funny and entertaining, but a little thought provoking at the same time.

If you think you're the only person whose dad said "Not under this roof, you're not" or "You're not going out in THAT!" then this series is going to broaden your horizons! Hilarious and pitch-perfect, it captures fathers' "wisdom" (if you can call it that) in true form. As a father myself, I cringe to realize I actually have said about half this stuff! Hamilton has created a marvelous little entertainment that perfect for families where dad has often put into words the kind of man he really is! Buy it for the dad in your life, and read it together.

Wow! I thought only my dad said these things...

With father's Day just around the corner, I have been keeping an eye out for something for my pop. I found the funniest book called, "Dad-isms." It was great reading through it and hearing all the things that used to come out of my own dad's mouth. The book tells you of a phrase you may have heard from your own, but what he really meant by the statement. One of my favorites was a phrase that went something like, "turn that racket down in there." But what he really meant was, "turn down your music, I can't hear the TV." And what about this warning, "Don't you ever let me catch you doing that again!" That simply meant, "you can do it, I just don't want to find out about it." It's hilarious.

At last Lionel Barnard has written a book on how to build your own beautiful gardens in miniature. Step by step he guides you through the process, giving the reader the best feeling that you too can complete wonderful projects with ease. Everything you need to know is in this book ~ the tools and materials are all clearly spelled out for you, and the photography is excellent. Cleverly, Lionel has written this in "English and American" for those of us that live on one side of the world or the other ~ a handsome touch! I have been buying and building my own miniatures for years and now there is a book for folks like me written by an expert ~ well done Lionel Barnard. I heard at one of the shows that there will be another book by Lionel and his wife to be published in the next year or so.... I can't wait. Get this one ~ you'll love it!

Don't let the name of the book fool you. The book only shows you how to make the specific designs of the various gardens in the book. The directions aren't entirely clear and you may get frustrated easily. The book does not show you how to make things like flowers, trees, and other various things you would think to find in a garden. Instead it tells you more about how to make things like the furniture, how to make realistic looking sidewalks, etc. If you want to make a more unusual outdoor setting that isn't flowery or traditional garden looking this is the book for you....

I loved this book! It describes in detail the eight designs featured as the cover states, but it also covers the elements of landscaping for a dollhouse. It gives instructions on how to create hedges and topiaries and has a few pages on how to create plants. With the beautiful color photographs and the detailed plans, I would suggest this book to miniaturists looking for landscaping inspiration.

Dolls' House Shops, Cafes & Restaurants
This book just makes me want to make stuff and isn't that what it's all about? Aside from the fact that you'll never again put a scrap of cardstock or the top of a pill bottle in the recycling bin again, there's not one project in this book that doesn't make the mini enthusiast want to get sticky fingers. Best of all, unlike a lot of other books, DH Shops doesn't insist on polished perfection. A lot of the vignettes contain objects that show the hand of the maker and it's obvious that Nisbett just really likes to MAKE things. She has some high-end minis in her rooms but she also has lots of box top endtables, framed postcards and walls covered with gift wrap that are within everyone's means. I guarantee you'll find tons of great ideas and lots of inspiration to get you taking a second look at that empty antacid bottle. Highly recommended.

This is one of those 'easy reader' books that come out of England, I believe, but it works well for a "read to me" book also. We have a ton of these, this particular one was great for when my 3.5 year old son was going in for same day surgery. The pictures look more English than American (i.e. my son asked what that THING was on the nurses' head - a nurses' cap) but overall these books do a great job at just explaining what is going on, with real people. Much like a picture book, and nothing offensive or scary about it.

When my son was going to have tubes put in his ears and his Adnoids removed, we purchased this book. He was just barely 3 years old, but this book explained on HIS level everything that was going to happen to him (from the little boy's ear first hurting, to everything that happens at the hospital before and after the surgery).

We took the book to the hospital and he pointed out to me where in the book it showed each step as they happened to him (ex. nurse taking his temperature). The book did this so well, and my son was so calm, the doctor decided he didn't need to give him the normal shot of something to calm him down. They just carried him down to surgery.

He just turned 4 and we are having to remove his tonsils this next month. He is reading the book again and loving it. Even though the procedure is not the exact same as the one the little boy in the book has, it has been very easy to replace ear ache with sore throat. EXCELLENT BOOK

Bright and cheery for very young readers

This book is about a boy who goes into the hospital for a one night stay after an ear operation. The pictures and words are bright, cheery and comforting to young readers. My daughter liked to read this book even after her hospital stay. It was written in England so it shows hospital scenes (like children in group wards) which didn't apply to my daughters stay. I pointed out differences between what would and did happen to her. A good book to show a very young child what going to the hospital will be like and that it isn't as scary as it might seem.
