Now I took this out from the library and bought it. So I think its a great book, lots of fun ideas with art. Now here is my only beef: They could give more step by step and write more. They talk like you have 50 years of art teaching under your belt. Just put a stem on the tree and add water color leaves. Uhhh, how about more details and more step by step pictures??!! Still love it though.

Perfect for kids and adults!

I have been trying to find a great art book for home projects with my kids, and I found it with this book. It has step-by-step instructions with beautiful color examples. This book is a gem. Not only am I teaching my son how to create beautiful art, I am learning alot myself about different techniques used for different effects. I recommend this book to any parent, daycare provider, or teacher who wants to teach art a fun way.

This is a great book, full of wonderful ideas and I highly recommend it! Just be careful when purchasing, there are two sizes: $8 for the 5"x6" version and about $15 for the 9"x12" version. As far as I can tell they are the same book, but if you want the bigger one and end up with the smaller one, it's a bit disappointing. Good luck!

This is a pocket size book of neighborly wisdom from Mister Rogers. It is the perfect gift someone you love or to keep for yourself. This book is the perfect present for the person who has everything....
Mister Rogers writes stuff we all need to read like: "there never has been....and there never will be- in the history of the earth- another exactly like you!"
He also wants us to take a minute and think of the people who wanted the best for you and loved you. Thank those people who have helped you become who you are...Just one minute...one minute to think of anyone who has made a difference in your life.
WOW...
Mister Rogers really has a wonderful message and I love this little book~
It's a beautiful day in this neighborhood~
Thank you for reading :)

My exgirlfriend gave this to me, back when we were still dating. Its a great little book, filled with lots of beautiful quotes and song lyrics from the show. There are anecdotes about his childhood and about things he learned during his life. Its a very lovely book. If you grew up with Mr. Rogers, its a perfect addition to your library. If your children don't know much about Mr. Rogers, its time to show them what they've been missing. The book *is* very small, but that means it can be tucked into a purse, hip pouch or even back pocket to be taken along on trips, rides, waiting in line etc. A must have.

Super, super tiny, and it has a mirror too!

I knew that it was small, but I didn't know it was this small. I don't think I've ever even seen a book this small before. The front has a cool mirror, too, which is a huge bonus.

I like how it's organized. It's broken into themes of what Mr. Rogers stood for.

It's mostly a book of quotes, but they're good quotes. One that was really interesting was how Mr. Rogers parents, at a very early age, let him use the piano to express whatever emotion he was feeling, and how he thought that was a really good way of dealing with emotions.

After mine arrived and I loved it, I ordered about ten as gifts for my friends.

Love this book!

I have fond childhood memories of watching Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. He made his audience feel loved and accepted and very special. I am glad the shows still air on public television so my children can grow up with him as I did. This book is just the right size for toddler hands and my children love to look at the pictures and talk about what they see.

For those of you who do not realize it, don't make the same mistake I made. The book is not a large book. It is great if your looking for a pocket size Mr. Rogers but not exactly something to put on the coffee table.

Even though I was discouraged by the size, the quotes in the book are still great, and just show how great of a man Fred Rogers Actually was

Review: The Age of Elegance : ...

The Age of Elegance : The Paintings of John Singer Sargent by John Singer Sargent is another very affordable book...

(Note: this is virtually a picture book.)

Sargent was well-known for his portraiture, and this book contains his elegant, famous oil paintings (including the one of Madame X). Zoom-ins/ups of paintings are overleaf (for nearly every painting). Quotes taken from numerous novels and papers by Sargent's very close friend Henry James, accompany the art works.

My only "complaint" is that a lot of these paintings are the more familiar ones. In other words, if you are a "fan" or own one of those expensive art books, more than likely you have seen the paintings which are showcased in this book. Also, a few of James' quotes get a bit long (but the rest fit the mood;)...

Other than that, there isn't really *anything* to lose! The cover has the title stamped in gold foil, and the paper is thick and glossy!

So... What are you waiting for?

Very Elegant and Informative Book

This book takes you into the rarefied world of elegance that typified the Gilded Age (1880-1920). Sargent has done an excellent job in portraying the lives of affluent individuals, especially the women. The men are portrayed as strong and stable. Women are painted as ultrafeminine reflections of their father's or husband's wealth and power. The Gilded Age represent the possiblities of upward mobility as exemplified by Andrew Carnegies, the Guggenheims, the Rockefellers, and the Browns(as in Molly Brown, whose husband struck rich out west in the 1890's). I recommend those who are interested in the artworks of the Gilded Age to read this book, it's interesting.

A small treasure to carry around

This little book of Sargent paintings is small enough to fit in the palm of one's hand, but in this case, size does not matter. I was drawn by this book's cover at the M.H. de Young Museum in San Francisco in late 2000, and was urged to by it by my art craving mind. I have to admit that it did have a few works of his I had not seen, so it is valuable in the sense to some die-hard fans (which I pretty much am of his). Like in the other reviews, this book is printed on great quality paper, has a dust jacket, and has a mini- biography with some different views on his life. It also has a detailed list in the back describing each painting shown. I believe it doesn't have a B/w photo, but I am not certain. Nevertheless, it is worth the small price. And, if you're a big fan of his, it never hurts to have a minature Sargent book to carry along :)

But what about scale?
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-07-11
One of the magical aspects of the portraits of John Singer Sargent is his cholce of scale. At times his Grande Dames were painted larger than life, his bon vivants narrow and elongated like the models themselves. Here all is compressed into home photograph size, as though these were taken during a visit to an exhibition in a crusty museum. But the joy of having so many of Sargent's elegant people greatfully reproduced in rich color and on fine quality paper makes the size more tolerable. And it is fitting to have the "commentary" be conversational Henry James parcels, since they were very close friends. This is not the definitive Sargent book, but until the price of the larger volumes is more accessible, this little book is a joy.

"A 'Sargent' is always a Sargent."

Review Date: 2001-08-19
OK, so I plagiarize the common saying, "A 'Rembrandt' is not always a Rembrandt." But that is not the point. My points actually are the following:

1) This is a very small book (pocket edition) to present lifesize paintings (for the most part, anyway) done by Sargent. Therefore, some limitations are inevitable.

2) This book simply presents 100 paintings (including some drawings) by Sargent with occasionally some comments by different patrons. The book does NOT discuss the technical or historical aspect of the paintings, except for a biography of 8 pages in the back of the book.

3) If you are, like myself, hoping to have a little book of paintings (at an affordable price) by Sargent to quickly look up the way colors were used in his portraits, then this book serves the purpose. After all, "A 'Sargent' is always a Sargent.", no matter how small is it presented. However, if you are looking for more than a collection of small paintings, other books on Sargent of larger volume may be called for.

While the title say "Basic Scenery", it's not about the difficult level, but basic scenery that's needed in every model railroad. The book is divided in several projects (two to four pages), with color photos to illustrate the techniques presented and tips on small details.

It's a book for modellers at all levels, but it is certain that intermediate and begginers can get the most from this book. To guarantee that, projects are well described on a very didactic language. I recommend the book for everyone planning the first or next railroad empire, even if it's a small one!

This book is in fact a series of tips and/or techniques but the reader will never see where the author tends to drive him. Each article starts with a very small (and partial) picture of the target but at the end of the explanations, no review of the final result. No global project as it was supposed at the very begin of the book. That's a pity.
The comments, in other hand, is sometimes missing details and precisions.
This book did not give me any confidence to try any of the explained techniques.

A Very Good Introduction

Review Date: 2006-12-05
There are two main approaches to model RR scenery. One is to rely on commercial systems and the other is to make things from scratch. While this might be intuitive for something like a model of a barn, it is much less so for the modeling the white water of a mill stream or the detritus of a forest floor. This book looks at both approaches, but does not do so from the perspective of either/or. Instead a situation is postulated and then the author explains how he would handle the situation. Sometimes this means mixing chemicals and installing commercial products and sometimes this means going out and getting a bunch of dead leaves to put in a blender. The approaches are mixed together and the result is an easy to read and easy to understand explanation that can be extrapolated for many situations.

The book is well illustrated and the actual construction steps are presented step by step. It is easy to follow.

I tend to distrust the natural approach, fearing that in time, organic matter will decay. I am less distrustful of it now and have some new ideas to try.

The simple step by step in this book covers just what we needed for all aspects of our 4x8' layout. We have been constructing it based on articles in Model Railroader magazine but there was not enough detail for ground, roads etc. This book has absolutely fabulous methods with easy to follow instructions and the results are fabulous. I never thought my son and I could achieve the kinds of realism that we constantly see displyed in magazines but with this book we are! And it is very easy to do.
The author's systems are very well documented and use inexpensive materials when ever possible.

The luminous colors of the dark ages.

Review Date: 2007-07-09
In this tiny book are brought together a limited choice of the most exquisite medieval miniatures from 1230 ( artist William de Brailes ) until 1522. Other important artists are Jan Van Eyck, Jean Fouquet, and Simon Bening.

Of course in large manuscripts most of the illuminations could hardly be called miniatures but were full blown paintings, so to speak, with their own set of aesthetic rules. The format of the Books of Hours are ideal to study miniatures. You will find in this little book ( approximate the same size as the miniatures included ) an amazing collection of breathtaking miniatures with very vivid and beautiful colors. It's eye candy, I agree, but that made the Books of Hours popular in the Middle Ages. Let's face it, the success of the Catholic Church in the Middle Ages depended - for a substantial part - upon the cultural wealth that was displayed in churches and cathedrals, in the Vatican and its sumptuous Library, and in the Books of hours with their initials decorated with burnished gold.

Indeed, you could say that the luminous colors of the miniatures in this collection are making the Dark Ages less dark.

I'm an art student, and we often study books of hours, but it's always just slides, so we don't get to hold an example. This little book is a wonderful example of the actual books of hours from this time period. It really gives you an appreciation for the craftsmanship of the artists; the intricate detail is so delicate and tiny, and it's clearly printed in this book. I highly recommend it!

A very handsome book that doesn't appear to've been copyedited at all. The first five pages have more grammatical errors than any ten randomly selected novels. Plus, author Jeff Kurtti's tortured prose stylings seem better suited to a grade 12 english class than a "quality" mass market publication. Still, excellent pictures, an attractive layout, and some good and interesting quotes from the key creatives, albeit rammed bone-headedly in between all the intermittently coherent Kurtti-text. Buy it to look at, not to read.

Being an author and a poet myself, I have experienced having writtings taken by others and posted on their own websites - without references back to the source;nor did they ask permission to use them. However, I have always managed to contact them and "gift" them to right to use my creations - as long as they credited me as the source. I am not sure how I would feel if someone had outright taken my creative works and said they were their own. That is what happened to Margaret Powers and her poem "footrprints". It is so hard to imagine that someone could steal the idea with a spiritual based theme and claim it as their own work.

I believe her story and find her a very loving soul - at least, that is what is projected from her book. The book is a simple a short read but well worth it.

Margaret Fishback Powers is an extraordinary woman who has been through and accomplished extraordinary things. What's more is I know the woman behind the book and the poem. She is heartfelt and genuine. She and her husband, also an author, tour the world in the name of Christ and are not boastful in any way. I'm sad to see people deny her rights to the poem and I'm glad for her that she finally gets the credit (in most cases) that she deserves.

Finally,a diorama book that doesn't focus on battle scenes (but those guys can learn a LOT with this book).

Instead, Ken shows how to spice up your automotive subjects, from simple display base scenes to complete, contained scenes.

Rust, mud, grime, and slime. Beaten, dented, worn out, used and abused. Ken shows you how.

Also, there is plenty about texturing, photo-reducing and sign-making, as well as an excellent primer on figure posing and painting.

This is a book that has been long overdue for model car builders, but as I said, anyone who works with scale models of any sort will find this to be a gold mine.

Many words come to mind when attempting to describe the work of Dutch artist M.C Escher: surreal, haunting, mysterious, dream-like.
Escher is best known for his exploration of the boundaries between art and reality ("Drawing Hands", "Reptiles", "Print Gallery"), and for his distortion of everday objects and mathematical experimentation with geometric shapes, patterns and perspectives (too many of his paintings to number). His best and most characteristic works, including "Depth" (1955), "Stars" (1948), and (naturally), "Other World" (1946) are highly imaginative, creating a fantastic and indescribable dream-universe all their own, one which must ultimately be experienced in order to be fully appreciated.

I thought I was buying a wall calendar, and instead received this engagement book. However, it is a very nice item. It is spiral bound, with sturdy, cardboard type pages. It contains both weekly pages and monthly pages. The monthly pages have squares too small to write anything in except a word or two. The weekly pages have enough room to write down projects, assignments or reminders. I am not educated in art - the only thing I know of M.C. Escher is optical illusions, but this book contains drawings, wood engravings, watercolors, etc. The pictures are spectacular and Escher has a new fan. I bought this as a gift, and thought of returning it, but I think the teen artist I bought it for will like it more than a wall calendar.

M.C. Escher is one of those artists that editors and art critics can't help but spew nonsense about. Taschen's collection of Escher's work is remarkably sparse on editorializing and allows the works to do what they have always done best: draw the viewer into the magical and hypnotic realm of M.C. Escher. The prints are extremely crisp and thoughtfully arranged, unlike other collections that throw works together in a hodge-podge fashion.

No other artist of the 20th century has had such wide approval and acclaim as M.C. Escher, and this slim volume perfectly expresses why that is so without resorting to pages upon pages of discussions on deconstruction, reality vs. illusion or image vs. icon, and all the other blah-blah-blah that you'll find in other collections. This collection just allows you to turn the pages and enjoy, which I did and you will too.

We bought this for my 9m old daughter and she loves turning the pages and looking at the bright pictures of the animals. It is small and chunky so it is perfect for little hands.

I only gave it 4 out of 5 because it is really just a picture book and doesn't have much other text. It is good for what it is.

my 13 month old ADORES this book! he has learned several of the animals in it and now walks around saying 'goose! goose!' all the time. the book is small enough to fit in a diaper bag and sturdy enough to take on the go. the colors are bright and the pictures are chunky and clear. FABULOUS BOOK for little ones!!!

tiny, colorful, fun

From my one-and-a-half-yr-old's perspective this book has all the elements of a favorite: it's tiny (about 4x4 inches), illustrated in bright bold colors, and full of animals that he can identify by name. I just wish I'd found it when he was younger -- it seems like the type of book a 6 or 9-month old could enjoy, and I'm afraid its too simple to hold his attention much past 18 months.

I'd also recommend the other tiny Maisy books in this series, and most anything illustrated by Lucy Cousins. Her bright pictures are so captivating for very young "readers."
