keeps Toddlers amused and entertained!Review Date: 2002-10-23
This little book, looks at first like any "lift" the flap book, but the cute illustrations, and surpising "finds" under the flaps really worked for all my toddlers (5).
They get the biggest kick out of looking under a "rock" to find some interesting bug or reptile!
The only trouble is now, out in the garden, we have to lift the rocks and logs to look for worms and other "pets"
This is an inexpensive gem to keep kids amused for a little while.

Not a serious introduction.Review Date: 2008-11-30
I also feel that the book is too trivial at times, harming astrology's already battered image; but this is more a personal opinion than a fact.
If your interest runs a bit deeper and/or are looking for a professional introduction, there are more serious and in-depth books out there.
Astrology for DummiesReview Date: 2008-09-09
I own on other Dummies book abd I find them very informative and straight forward. Everything is put in layman's terms, no Phd required.
I wanted to learn about astrology so I boought 2 other books before I bought this one. The first two were college level and very hard to understand. The Dummies one is very explains what the Houses are and how our planets relate to the houses. The author provides plenty of illistrations so the reader understands what she is talking about.
I enjoy the Dummy series, since they don't make you feel dumb.
Great Book, Easy to Read and Follow. Thanks...Review Date: 2008-04-14
Excellent OverviewReview Date: 2008-05-18
I will happily admit to being a big fan of the Dummies books. If one is new to a subject, wants to find a starting point that will not mislead or overwhelm them or only wants an overview they are the perfect place to start. "Astrology for Dummies" by Rae Orion is just such a book.
As an experienced Tarot reader, I know the basics of astrology, but I wanted to learn more so that I could effectively add astrology to my services. I needed a starting point from which to learn enough so that I could intelligently evaluate more advanced books as well as software and other technical astrological products. This book has given me those tools.
Other reviewers have complained that this book "...is an extremely generalized book..." or that it is "...not very helpful for anyone who really wants to seriously study astrology". Yes, it is generalized and no, it will not make you a serious nor professional astrologer. It is a Dummies book! It does precisely what all Dummies books are intended to do, it takes the reader from know little or nothing about a subject to either satisfying their curiosity or giving them an effective platform from which to launch more detailed study.
The various parts of astrology are covered step by step with the clear tables, checklists, comments, signpost icons and sidebars for which the Dummies books are famous.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who knows little or even nothing about astrology, but wants to learn more and then either be satisfied or know how to go on with their studies.

not only an icon, but a "legend come true"Review Date: 2008-02-08
as i mentioned not only a great white wyrm, the dragon at your hands is actually "icingdeath", which is terrifying!! :)
i am more into story so, sets like that offers me much more than just "icons", i mean the collossal red dragon is not much of a value to me, but here comes icingdeath, which means a villain of story, nightmarish stuff :)
how much you can imagine about the great red wyrm as "klauth" or as "malystryx" it won't give me the same feeling as having the original one, so new sets like "gargantuan orcus" feels much better for me, cause they are more into role play / story..
how much do i talk :) BUY IT!!! :D

The coolest dragon!Review Date: 2008-07-01
The pack is great because you get a cool dragon, a competitive miniature for skirmish (Wulfgar) and a classic one, in a new concept (Drizzit), the map is also cool, and improves your game, because you can use it im some snowy adventures, it's perfect to be used with the Frostburn supplement.
This is a must have for those who love the Crystal Shard, who love Forgotten Realms, or just his most popular hero.

THE MASTER OF LIGHTNING!Review Date: 2007-02-19
The Dragon is indeed gargantuan and impressive measuring around 8" long (and that's WITHOUT the tail extended) and stands about 6" tall. The Dragon's paint job is a nice glossy, bright blue which reflects the light very well creating an almost shimmering appearance which I really liked. The eyes have a certain evil malevolence to them that was also a very nice touch. The detail of the muscles and the beast's scales and claws is very good. I also like the sharp, bony protrusions along the spine that actually look the way you'd expect bone to look. The only complaint with the paint job is with the teeth, which are simply, too white and should have been yellowed to match the age of a great and ancient dragon like this.
It of course comes on a base and will look wonderful on a shelf as a decorative item even if you don't plan on using it in your gaming adventures. In addition it comes with a fold-out, full-color battle map, a game stat card and a scenario sheet. This lighting-spewing monstrosity is truly a site to behold and a fantastic new release from Wizards of the Coast. Highly recommended and well worth the price!

Poems from the Hobbit: A Slight Mistake Review Date: 2007-11-24
Over the misty mountain coldReview Date: 2007-02-13
The poems in here are, obviously, all from "The Hobbit," usually in the form of songs. Some of these are fun and cheerful, like the mocking song that the dwarves sing ("Chip the glasses and crack the plates!/Blunt the knives and bend the forks!/That's what Bilbo Baggins hates") or the nonsensical little ditty the Rivendell elves sing ("O! What are you doing,/And where are you going?/Your ponies need shoeing!/The river is flowing!/O! tra-la-la-lally/here down in the valley!").
Some of these poems are more fragmented and bizarre than real songs -- the goblins' triumphant song ("Clap! Snap! the black crack!/Grip, grab! Pinch, nab!") and Bilbo's spider-killing song are two examples, where it seems more like an opportunity for the characters to shout out taunts in rhyme.
But the best poetry here -- and the ones that show Tolkien at his best -- are the entrancing ones that sound like ancient, starlit epics: "The mountain smoked beneath the moon;/The dwarves, they heard the tramp of doom/They fled their hall to dying fall/Beneath his feet, beneath the moon/Far over the misty mountains grim/To dungeons deep and caverns dim."
Academics like to sniff at Tolkien's poetry, though I doubt they could manage the range or vividity that his writing has. His poetry speaks for itself, as does his ability to do everything from storytelling epics to riddles to funny little songs about nothing in particular. THAT takes quite a lot of talent.
Tolkien's writing style is absolutely exquisite and memorable ("On silver necklaces they strung/The flowering stars, on crowns they hung/The dragon-fire, in twisted wire/They meshed the light of moon and sun"), full of shimmering imagery and ye-olde flavour... or funny stuff about smushing food into Bilbo's floor and breaking his dishes.
They even include the riddles from Gollum and Bilbo's little game, ranging from old ones that everyone knows to gruesome little ditties ("Voiceless it cries,/Wingless flutters,/Toothless bites,/Mouthless mutters."). And the illustrations are very pretty and appropriate -- delicate, colourful, and all around pleasant to look on.
"Poems From the Hobbit" has nothing new for people who already have "The Hobbit," but it's a charming little pocket collection of Tolkienian poetry.

I think there must be some petty gossip and whatnot going on in this miniaturist hobby. There are some exceedingly immature reviews that have been posted below and I hope that amazon gets around to removing them. What do these persons want, some kind of textbook to copy exactly so that everyone's work will look alike? Such a lack of professionalism only makes the hobby at large look bad to the rest of the world. This is a fine book and I would love to see any of these things "live" at a show.

The stuff may be a bit European looking to American eyes but that simply adds to the charm. Is she English? I guess so with cricket bats and the like maybe she can get over here and produce an American version with mini bleachers and baseball bats!
To the reviewer from Chicago, if you can do better then I look forward to YOUR book!
My recommendation is buy the book, get inspired and try your hand.

An excellent reference book for the aspiring gardener.Review Date: 2006-03-26
What makes this easy to understand book a worthwhile read are the many how-to's and tips it offers. It gets down to the basics of gardening.
You learn how to become a green thumb gardener by selecting plants that grow well in the area you live, the healthy advantages of growing different plants yourself, or just for the aesthetic value gardening offers.
An excellent guide for the aspiring gardener.
This Book Helped Turn My Black Thumb GreenReview Date: 2006-03-20
First, it has easy-to-access tip after tip about what plants and flowers need in general as well as what SPECIFIC plants need in order to thrive and look good. It helped me turn a garden that was at first forced upon me into one that looks as if I know what I am doing.
Second, it's also great because it helped me IDENTIFY a lot of the plants in my inherited garden, before telling me how to help them grow happily. After all, you can't really help plants grow if you don't know what they are. It even has extensive sections on growing vegetables and, to a lesser extent, fruit.
The language is great, too, in that it's well-organized in a way that makes it accessible while it teaches readers how to speak "gardenese" so you can ask for everything you need at your local nursery. In fact, when you have this book, even other people in your family start to turn to you for answers about gardening. I found this to be very cool, especially since I quickly found that, surprisingly enough, I now really do know a few things about gardening. Whoda thunk it?
But the most important thing that I know now, in regard to my garden, is that with this book in my back pocket, this coming Spring is going to be one of the best ever for my little corner of suburbia. So, if you're a plant expert (or just a Californian), you may not need this book. If, on the other hand, you are human and sometimes feel as though you live in the land of misfit plants, get this book. You'll be SO glad you did.
Garden Book for IdiotsReview Date: 2001-12-24
Perhaps for folks whose idea of good reading is comic books, this would be the perfect garden book. It is indeed set up for those who are easily distracted, lots of bullet points and little boxes and so on.
I question whether or not this book was even needed. There are many fine how-to garden books already out there. The old Taylor's Encyclopedia of Gardening, for example, can usually be found used for about the same price or less. Taylors, although old, is a real gardening book.
Somehow I equate gardening with intelligence, with class, with good taste. I enjoy having shelves of books on all the different aspects of horticulture and hardly want one titled Gardening for Dummies. I have a book, Auto Repair for Dummies (also a present) and somehow I don't mind being an automotive dummy. But a garden variety dummy is a bit much.
Nonetheless, if you simply don't have the patience for most books, and you don't know beans about gardening, go for it. Despite the title, the author, Michael MacCaskey, knows plenty about gardening.

A Dollhouse CozyReview Date: 2003-08-26
Now, as an expatriate English person living in North America, I'm kind of sensitive to an American writing an English who-dun-it. I like that this writer, writing in the first person, remains American and doesn't try to be British, even though she tries to out-Brit the Brits by wearing a succession of outlandish hats. I don't mind that she looks down her nose at some aspects of British life and is thoroughly confused by others (I do the same myself here). I really like the way she accepts her age and all that goes with it, including the stiff knees and the way young people patronize her (boy, do I empathize with that). All in all, this is an experienced writer who makes the reader identify with her protagonist.
This is a thoroughly competent book, and a good read. It takes a lot of confidence to have your sleuth fall asleep in the middle of the climax and the big chase scene. I shall look for some more of Jeanne M. Dams books.

However, I am glad my friend talked me into reading the book. It was wonderful. I love Ms. Dams descriptions of the house and the people.
And the ending ... I had sort of figured it out, or thought I had. It was wonderful. I finished it late at night and laughed out loud. My cats thought I was crazy. If you have not read this book you will thoroughly enjoy it.

Aside from the fun of flap-lifting (and ultimately, flap-tearing), we have fun reading it together pointing to and counting the items on each page: 7 eggs, 4 boats, 5 lily pads, etc. It's also great for talking about colors and 'big and small'.
I just wish there was a way to make the flaps rip-proof!
