I am a 2nd graders at the Anna Merritt Elementary School. My name is Danielle. My favorite Little Critter book is WHERE IS MY FROG?. My favorite part was when Little Critter found his frog at the end of the story.

I'm 18, and I love Marc Brown and his "Arthur" series. This is a great book, full of surprises, for more reasons than one! The first big surprise is that Arthur even has a gerbil. It's never been seen before in any of the other books. Then the surprises continue with a flap on every page! A cute mystery and the book is well illustrated as well. I'd recommend this book to anyone.

My daughter has worn this book out. The flaps are very sturdy. She loves to lift them herself and had even more fun when she learned to say the animal sounds.

The king of advanced Pinewood Derby books!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-10
OK, first of all, what is Pinewood Derby? Each year a Cub Scout pack hands out car kits that include a block of wood, four plastic wheels, four metal nails (for axles), a set of decals, and an instruction sheet. In theory, the Scouts create their own cars by carving or otherwise shaping the block of wood, and decorating it to make a racer. The pack then has a competition where the cars are raced down a small track, with awards being handed for the fastest cars and often for the most imaginative cars. It was begun in 1953 by Don Murphy as a, "wholesome, constructive activity that would foster a closer father-son relationship and promote craftsmanship and good sportsmanship through competition."

In practice, though, fathers often commandeer the kits, and seek to use their knowledge to give their sons an edge over the other children. Every pack has at least one - in my son's pack it was a professional woodworker who built his children's racers, and then handed them to the kids just before the race. His children dominated the race, but took no pride in cars that they had nothing to do with.

This book was written by John L. Heller, an aircraft designer, and has the most detailed and informative instructions that I have ever seen. The suggested Pinewood Derby car design of this book is a slab, with rounded front and tapered rear (like the shape of an aircraft wing), with the lead weight added to the very rear. But, in point of fact, this book tells you how to make any design you want, even telling you how to make wooden fenders for a Derby car. Indeed, I found the information on weight placement and axle modification to be most eye-opening!

So, overall I found this to be a highly informative book, perhaps the most informative I have ever seen! The book has a lot of excellent information in it, one that is sure to give an edge to anyone who is willing to put a LOT of work into a Pinewood Derby car. Indeed, you do not have to follow all of the suggestions in this book, so any adult will benefit from reading it.

There are two types for Pinewood Derby books out there. For basic advice that will benefit boys and *assisting* parents there's "Cub Scout grand prix", and "How to Book: Formula for Building & Racing PineCars" by Woodland Scenics Staff. But, for committed adults who want to build the fastest possible cars, there are all of the others, and the king of them is definitely this one!

A booklet of lovely projects!

I have both of the books

"The Wish Booklet Fashioning Miniatures"
by Susan Sirkis and

"Fashioning Miniatures-One More Time (Wish Booklets, Vol 23)"
by Susan B. Sirkis (Paperback - June 1980)..which is the sequel to the first.

The first booklet, in the beginnning is on making miniature doll bodies, wigs etc,. The basic construction of the rooms for a scene etc,..

The first booklet features:
"The Mini-Mannequin"-articles on making mini dolls, wigs etc.,

"The Rooms" how to put scenes together to put your mini dolls and accessories in.

The following features are the actual projects:

"My Chinoiserie"
"Dorothy's Dream"
"Heritage" which is an american colonel scene
"Ye Olde Newe Englande Teae Roome"
"Katie's Room" which is a childs nursery
"The Real Princess' Sleepless Room" which is the old fairy tale story scene
"Marie Antoinette Lives" the title says it all!
"The Ideal Antiquarian"

Even though, like the second booklet as well, does not have all the pictures of the projects and instructions on making the bodies, projects etc., are in cursive fonts, it really does not matter because of all the fun and beautiful projects! These are booklets for the mini DIYerselfer who loves pretty projects!

I first read this book as part of a college course on East-Asian thought as is described through the art and architecture of China. This though is a fansastic book, full of wondrous illustrations and woodcuts. Perfect for those people interested in EastAsian thought, bonsai gardening, sinology/anthropology, an all around intriquing and very beautifull book. Hard to find, but is possibly available direct from the publisher.

Didn't realize this was a mini-version of the book till I received it. It's about the size of an adult's hand (fingertip to palm). Doesn't make the best gift.
