Without doubt, all parents are sometimes (or often) guilty of ignoring the requests of their children for attention because the parents are trying to accomplish some (to them) important task. Where has this AMAZING product been my entire life? Great book which pictures nearly every G.I.Joe figure released in the U.S., and nearly every gun, backpack, and accessory that came with the figures. Truly indespensable for a G.I. Joe collector. HIGHLY recommended!

I did not know anything about the world of model aircrafts until I picked up this book. This book does a wonderful job of interweaving the history of the Air and Space collection with the role model aircrafts played in the war effort. I would be remised if I did not strongly encourage the reader to really take the time to look at each picture in the book. Some of the pictures give you up close detail information on the the intricate work involved in the models (i.e. maps in the cockpits). This book gives you a new appreciation to a hobby that is finally getting the respect it deserves.

This Book is still one of a kind. Since it was published in 1970, it is still the only reliable Book which gives the complete Text of three Wayang Kulit (Javanese Shadow Puppet) Lakon (Plays). "The Reincanation of Rama" from the Ramayana and "Irawan's Wedding" and "The Death of Karna" from the Mahabharata. The Book begins with a fine introduction to Wayang, the Plays, Performance and Translation. The translation from Javanese was rendered by Pandam Guritno, one of the froemost Javanese Wayang Scholars of all time, whom I knew personally. Next follow the texts of the three Plays, which include 143 illustrations. James Brandon has also included descriptions of the action that takes place and the musical pieces that are played. The reader can thus review three performances through reading. At the end of the Book are useful Appendices, Notes on Sources, a good Glossary and a now outdated Bibliography. This Book is useful for those who are interested in Wayang, Javanese Culture, Theater Arts, Sanskrit Literature and many other subjects. That is what makes Wayang so wonderful. It is many things in one.

Puppeteer Frey has, over a span of nearly 20 years, developed nontraditional shortcuts to creating mobile, inexpensive props and puppets. In this guide, she includes simple one-person puppetry techniques, warm-up techniques, and plans for entertaining patter between plays (songs, parodies, jokes, riddles, etc.). In addition, Frey provides original scripts for 38 simplified tales, including humorous "fractured" fairy tales, folktales from around the globe, and adaptations of Aesop's Fables. I wish I'd had something like this when I started out as a children's librarian. Save yourself from learning the hard way and take advantage of Frey's years of experience.

The main part is divided into chapters describing painting various materials, laid out in logical order. Number of figures from various periods is used as examples, to show variety of possible situations. Most figures are 54mm or 75mm, but larger ones are also shown at times. Adding some terrain to the base is covered as well.

The material is shown on very clear photographs, accompanied by captions when needed. Some of the terms are a bit odd - for example "veil" is used to describe a wash - but pictures are clear enough to make it a minor point.

The book only shows one approach to painting - the author's. He uses acrylics for painting most man made materials, and oils (often on top of acrylic base) for natural ones (flesh, hair, leather, etc.) To me this was a bit of a disappointment, but to be honest his results make it very difficult to argue against his method :).

Overall the book is excellent IMO.

Neil Soderstrom's color photos in Panda: A Guide Horse For Ann lend to a very lively survey of one Panda, a real-life guide horse who guides her owner. But Panda isn't a full-sized horse: she's a miniature horse only as tall as her owner's thigh - and she's as good as a guide dog, being one of the first to be trained as a guide animal. Picturebook readers in grades 2-4 will find Panda: A Guide Horse For Ann to be an enthralling story of the little horse, nicely enhanced by Neil Soderstrom's vivid color photos.

I'd remember reading this when I was in the 5th grade and loved the story so much that when I found it on Amazon during a search I bought it for my daughter, in the 4th grade. She absolutely loved it as well! This is a great book to be handed down through the generations.
