An exquisite book of tutorials!

Review Date: 2003-07-11
My friend purchased "Fashioning Miniatures-One More Time (Wish Booklets, Vol 23)" by Susan B. Sirkis and 22 Vol for me and I am absolutely ecstatic over these booklets.

The tutorials for "Fashioning Miniatures-One More Time (Wish Booklets, Vol 23)" by Susan B. Sirkis are just exquisite, there are projects for: "The Boucher Room" (which is featured on the front cover of the booklet), "Dinner For Two", "Christmas In The Castle", "Wedding Morn", "Tiny Bubbles", "In Concert", "Cindy's Corner" (a Cinderella scene), "The Bride's Boutique" and "Regency Romance".

As you can see there are so many wonderful projects in this book. Even though there isn't pictures of all the scenes and the instructions for the clothes and whatnot are in cursive font it doesn't even matter because of all the superb projects!
The tutorials in Vol 22 "Fashioning Miniatures" has just as lovely tutorials as Vol 23. I would definitely recommend getting both of Vol 22 and 23 of the Wish Booklets!

Lives Up to It's Name
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-08
This is one of my all time favorite sewing books and it DOES live up to it's name. Fast, fun and EASY! I made two covers within the first week of getting the book.

The instructions are detailed, concise and easily understood, even by me and I'm a self-taught, novice.

Best things about this book are that the instructions allow you to cover ANY book you want from checkbooks, journals to cookbooks, paperbacks, EVERYTHING. I absolutely LOVE this book! Also, for other "hoarders" like me, who can't bear to get rid of the bigger scraps of fabric I have left from other projects, not to worry! You can easily incorporate those scraps into fabulous designs! If I sound like I'm gushing, I AM! I can see myself using this book for years and years to come without getting tired of it.

The book details the supplies needed to get started but I found I already had almost all of them including a mat and rotary cutter, glue gun, etc.

The only downside and it's not much of one is that the covers are finished using a satin stitch on the edges which can be a bit tedious but it looks SO GREAT when you're done. I even added some metal charms I had floating around in my button box.

The sky's the limit with this book and I found it really stimulated my creativity. This one's a keeper!

Donald Featherstone is the dean of wargames books. This book contains a treasure trove of details, facts and rules features for every type of wargame and period available. Especially pleasing are the margin boxes that contain unique gaming recommendations such as how to simulate the fog of battle or courier dispatches. These are worth the price of the book alone. This guide is a must for new and experienced gamers alike. I refer to it again and again!!!

collectible traditional Russian art
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-29
This is a large, excellent book on the traditional Russian art of lacquered miniature painting. Over 250 color reproductions of the works of Masters are featured. This is really the definitive book on the craft. The art is famous for its tiny, but finely-detailed illustrations of folk tales or village life, painted free-hand with a homemade brush of a single squirrel or sable hair. Real gold leaf and mother-of-pearl insets add to the beauty and value of the paintings, which are created on papier-mache' shkatulki (boxes) or plaques. Many layers of lacquer finish the artwork, giving it a long-lasting, lustrous, three-dimensional quality (and incidentally, its name). Each creation can take several months, or as much as a year, to complete. Some of the rarest, most magnificent paintings are presented in these pages. The book contains a history of the craft and its Masters. Also included are short essays on each of the four schools -- the villages of Palekh, Kholui, Mstera, and Fedoskino -- which have produced generations of painters in this enduring and endearing folk art.

A Journal to Record your thoughts
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-10
Unlike a lot of the guided journals that are very structured and, in my opinion, thus limiting, this is a true journal providing blank pages for you to record your own thoughts at your own pace. The version I have (without the bookmark) has about 160 lined pages with a serene blue/white background (much like looking at the skies) and inspirational sayings in small boxes every 3 or 4 pages - just enough to motivate reflection, without taking up too much space. Mine also has plastic pockets for 20 pictures - my favorite part of the journal.

If you like to do a lot of writing, this is perfect for a mother.

When I spotted this book at the counter of a local bookstore the cover and title were the first things to catch my eye. Fortunately, I don't just judge a book by it's cover. I began reading the quotes from the various people and I thought, Wow!

I think every teenage girl and woman needs to read this book. It is such an inspiration. Each of the quotes contained in this book provide such truth, insight, and first aid for women.

It was hard to put this book down without reading all of the quotes at once, but I wanted to save some for later. This is a little book that you want to keep handy and read over and over. As a matter of fact, I plan to purchase several of them for friends and family.

Got this book as a gift and am very pleased with it! Lots of gorgeous full-color pics of manuscript illuminations from several centuries. Great commentary on the pics and the styles of each period. Although pricey, this book is quite large and quite full of illuminations and the history of Flemish manuscript making. Well worth it for the modern scribe or anyone interested in medieval book illumination.

"Some small woodblock prints"
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2000-01-15
An outstanding catalogue of a significant collection ignored by earlier "specialists" who catalogued the Wright collection (and labeled the box of surimono as "small woodblock prints").

Ms. Mirviss applies her considerable knowledge of Japanese art and her expertise in the peculiarities of the (nearly illegible) script used for the poetry to bring this collection to life. Her unfailing artistic eye makes to this potentially confusing print genre accessible to the Western audience - and even modern Japanese.

Stunning illustrations of previously unpublished or rarely seen works enhance the richness and pleasure of this catalogue and complement the descriptive text and translations.
