"Spot's Favorite Baby Animals," by Eric Hill, is a delightful educational book for the smallest children. Spot, a friendly little dog, introduces the reader to several baby animals: a kitten, a lamb, a piglet, a chick, and more. The simple, colorful illustrations have a fun, cartoon-like quality to them. Spot, who appears on every two-page spread, is an appealing character.

Not only does this book teach the animals, but the block size of the book is great for little hands and also for stacking on top of other block books. One of my 18mth olds favorites!

"Spot's Favorite Colors," by Eric Hill, is another fun volume in the series of educational books featuring Spot, a friendly little dog. In this book, Spot introduces the reader to various colors. The simple, cartoon-like illustrations feature a red bicycle, a blue bird, a green leaf, and other concrete items. Spot appears on every two-page spread. Overall, a good choice for the smallest children who are beginning to get interested in books.

Oops!!! We love the Spot books, but I neglected to read the product description when I ordered this one. Surprise! It's about two and a half inches square and two and a half inches high . . . kind of a small cube. It's adorable, as are all the Spot products. Very simple: One number and two words on each page. And, it's turned out to be just the right size for little learners with little hands. It is so loved, in fact, that we're ordering the rest of the "cube books." It was just a bit of a shock when we opened the package.

Suiseki: The Japanese Art of Miniature Landscape

Looking for something new to do? Something out of the ordinary? Something inexpensive and relaxing?

Maybe its time to collect suiseki (soo-ee-sek-ee).

Felix G. Rivera, founder of the California Suiseki Society, explains how to collect and appreciate suiseki in his book, Suiseki: The Japanese Art of Miniature Landscape Stones.

Rivera began collecting more than twenty years ago. Since then he has written and lectured internationally about the centuries-old art of suiseki collecting.

New and experienced collectors alike will find his book interesting and helpful.

Although they may look like nothing more than plain rocks to the casual observer, suiseki are very special stones. The forces of nature have carved them into miniature mountains, islands, waterfalls, and other landscapes. Some suiseki resemble humans or animals. Suiseki collectors are simply people who search for intriguing stones, which they bring home, clean, and display.

Among the benefits of collecting suiseki is time spent enjoying the outdoors and a fascinating stone that reminds you of the good time you had finding it. Rivera says "the true spirit of suiseki is a shared experience," and for many, the search is as pleasurable as finding that one perfect stone.

Suiseki are never machine cleaned or polished; collectors spend many relaxing hours lovingly hand-rubbing their tiny landscapes. Other than perhaps grinding off the bottoms so that they may be displayed, suiseki are not altered in any way by humans.

Rivera writes that "a suiseki may be viewed quite simply--as a pretty stone with a nice shape--or it may be viewed at various levels of complexity that embrace art, philosophy, or mineralogy or that serve as a metaphor for the connections between one's private world and the universe." He says that the various levels at which one can enjoy and appreciate suiseki make them not only art, but also enable collectors to "achieve personal satisfaction and peace."

He has filled his book with tips on where to search, what to look for, and how to clean and display suiseki. Rivera provides general and introductory material for new collectors, and detailed references for the more experienced. He includes drawings and photographs, including 32 full-color plates with detailed captions. The appendices include a glossary, bibliography, and lists of where to obtain more information, such as maps and collectors clubs.

In his forward to Rivera's book, Arishige Matsuura, Chairperson of the Japan Suiseki Association, writes "all that is required to enter the world of suiseki is to find something intriguing about the stone." Rivera opens the doors to that enchanting world with his comprehensive, but easy-to-understand book.

A thorough and lovely book

I own all the other books listed in the suiseki section, and have read numerous descriptions of the art of Suiseki as they appear in books on Bonsai, and I feel that Mr. Rivera's book was the first to help me understand what makes a suiseki different than any fascinating stone that I might pick up. The sections on aesthetics, and display were extremely helpful. And lastly, the photos were of terrific quality, and variety. It would be the first book I would buy on the art.

This is an excellent resource! This book contains the full score for both "The Great G Minor" Symphony and the "Jupiter" Symphony. This volume was both affordable, portable, and very legible, although I think it could have been printed in a larger-page format. An excellent buy for anyone interested in analyzing these great symphonies!

This edition is a very inexpensive compilation of Mozart's two most famous symphonies. The engraving is clear and small (as in all Dover Miniatures) and the edition is handsomely priced. The one interesting aspect of this edition is that it gives the alternate Oboe and Clarinet parts--results of a later revision by Mozart--above the staff containing the original text. This is both mildly confusing and also enlightening--I don't know exactly what to think!

A Perfect Guide to How the Pro's Do It
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 1997-12-05

After seeing the film, the book was a natural progression. As a teacher of computer animation, Toy Story has enabled my students and I to study a piece of work which has very few flaws, other than the one's talked about by the animators and directors themselves.

For a student of the art of animation, the book gives a superb insight into how an idea is developed from conception right through to production. Explanations are concise and clear and illustrations are comprehensive and in most cases beautiful.

If you are embarking on a career in computer animation, buy this book!

"Art of Animation" is bigger and better than ever

The latest version of Hyperion's popular book, "The Art of Animation," will soon be available in bookstores. Bob Thomas, the author who wrote the original "Art of Animation" back in 1958, has merged the existing versions of his book with previously unpublished interviews with Walt Disney and new material from Disney's upcoming "Hercules" to create a chronicle of Disney animation that is bigger and better than ever.
The new edition of Thomas's book is entitled "Disney's Art of Animation: From Mickey Mouse to Hercules." Whether or not you own an earlier version of the work, the Disney fan in you will find this new book interesting and worthwhile.
As in the past, "Art of Animation" is split into two parts. The first half is dubbed "History of a New Art," and its nine chapters recount the history of animation, particularly the pioneering work of Walt Disney and his studio. The second portion of the book is called "The Making of Hercules," a

Precious Keeping

Review Date: 2002-10-22
The intimacy of an image in a closed victorian case greatly contrasts with the brash public advertisement craved by photograph subjects and holders of our age. Here shown is an incredible variety of design and cultural symbols that warmed the victorian heart and provided a notable prelude to disclosure of a person much-loved by the case's holder. The preface is well documented study of the origins of the theromoplastic photograph case. The body of the work is a quite comprehensive monochrome catalog of cases organized by size and design. The sheer variety of the invention shown is dizzying. This is a carefully prepared work and should continue for some time as a standard for those collecting and exploring the thermoplastic (Union) case.

I bought this book because I work as an Environmental Educator, and working with children on topics such as the 3Rs, I found that to tell them stories using puppets made out of reusable materials is a great way of teaching the kids! The directions on the book are reasonably easy to follow, and there is a wide range of projects, from simple ones you can do in like 15 minutes, to more hard ones, where you need more materials and more time on completing them.

Best Puppet Book I"ve Come Across

Review Date: 2006-10-22
After going through several books on puppet making, I would have to say this is the best one I've come across. The directions are clear and easy to follow. Every puppet has a color photo of the finished product as well as color illustrations to guide you along the way.

Most if not all of the puppets supplies are readily available and easy to find. Besides that they give you many different types of puppets to choose from. Not just the common sock and glove puppet. It even shows you how to make a manipulate marionettes.

The book is most likely geared more towards older children, but adults can surely gain a wealth of information from it. You'll be making professional looking puppets in no time.

Coffee Table Book with Substance
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-26
This book offers a clear and concise introduction to the development of Walt Disney's first full-length animated feature. The book's use of stills, roughs, and concept art vividly illustrate much of the "magic" that goes into making an animated film. Not only that, but the book's incorporation of technical details provides enough "insider information" to appeal to those wanting to know more about the how of animation. In fact, I used the book's section on the multiplane camera to introduce the invention's importance to an introductory class in animation. It worked wonders!

Also nicely developed in the book is how Snow White set the production and narrative standards for the Disney's subsequent films. It's nice to see a coffee table book with substance!

Gorgeous artwork; good intro to animation process

I loved the artwork and descriptions of the animation process. (The display of the art is organized to also help explain the process.) Also "behind the scenes" recollections of how the movie was made as well as a discussion on how to conserve, and prepare for sale, animation artwork. This can be equally appreciated by those with serious or casual interest in animation art.
