Patterns are great and quite different. Explanations are interesting. The projects are done as individual blocks, which is nice. If you want to combine them into a larger project, you have that option as well. I recommend this book.

I smoked 2-3 packs a day of menthols and tried the pills and hypnosis but neither worked. Read this book in less then 2 hours and haven't smoked since! That was over 7 years now and saved thousands of dollars not to mention smelling like a dirty ashtray. Please try this book before you blow money on useless treatments like I did. Good luck!

I read a lot of books - this was one of them.

A co-worker introduced me to this book and I read the quotes throughout the day and was inspired by each and every one of them. I then had the idea that all of my (girl)friends should be just as inspired and have one of their own to carry with them. Small enough to tuck away for whenever you need a little 'inspiration'. All of my friends love theirs.

I love this book!

Quotable Women is great. I have owned a copy for 5 years or so, and I still love to glance through the quotes. There is wisdom and comedy in there for everyone. Trust me, any woman would HAVE to love this mini!

John Brown, a Scottish physician, wrote this moving story in 1858. In it, Brown harks back to his childhood, and his first meeting of the great mastiff Rab. They maintain their friendship for some six years, until Rab's owner, James Noble, brings his wife to the medical school where Brown is studying. Ailie Noble is suffering from breast cancer, and the Surgeon-Master of the school decides to operate. It is 1830, a time before anesthetics and antibiotics.

I don't normally say such things, but I do not believe that it is possible to read this heart-rending story with dry eyes. Dr. John Brown is mainly remembered for this slim book, and it is easy to see why it has survived. The author wrote a book that is highly informative about that earlier and more primitive time, and is also touching at the very core of humanity. This is a wonderful book, one that is often recommended to dog-lovers, and one that I recommend to everyone!

A great book for families with children of different races or for foster families

Both of my babies loved this book. The pictures are very cute and each page has the story written in rhyme. The book goes through the day of a group of babies of various races who all live together. The book is unique in that all the children are different races and no caregiver is pictured. They all sleep together in the same bed. It would be a good book for families who have children of mixed races or for a foster family with babies of different races. The illustrations are well done and realistic, depicting simple problems and scenarios that a baby can easily relate to. We read it over and over.

Mom and Dad "up at dawn" reading this

Our daughter would bring this book to us every morning near dawn exclaiming "read me again!". My husband memorized it so he could keep his eyes closed a few moments longer, while turning the pages and "reading" it to her. Although there is no accounting for this tiny board book fetching these astronomical prices, it is a family treasure of memory. The book did not survive its overuse at our house. I hope you (and we for friends and future grandchildren) can find it for a more reasonable $10.00 or under.

I bought this product a few years ago, but haven't really had the opportunity to put it up until just now. I can't find the little book it came with, but the windchimes are of decent quality and sound pleasant.

Pretty good serenity in there

The box provides serenity just like they say. The book has nice serene quotes. To top it off, there are nature pictures in side this book. If you need a serene enviroment, buy this box. It may not be like big serenity type chimes, but it's a good value. To complete your enviroment, wind chimes are enclosed. These are real, and are perfect to go with the quotes.

Pros
+Good value.
+nice book
+windchimes
+A serene enviroment in a box.
+Six dollars! a good price!

Cons
-black and white photos

Overall, a good deal of serenity

The Ultimate Ship Modeller
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-08-02
This is not a book on how to build ship models. Instead, it is a detailed look at the art of modelling from the perspective of a true master - Donald McNarry, Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts, builder of the most detailed and realistic ship models ever seen in miniature scale. McNarry puts as much detail into a 1:1200 scale model as most builder's models have in 1:48 scale.

McNarry's idea of a proper model in 1:1200 scale is that decks should be planked to scale, rigging should be laid up to scale with the right number of strands, etc.

His models are so finely detailed that they sometimes literally have to be examined under a microscope to really appreciate his workmanship.

This is not a book for those with shaky self esteem. None of us will ever have any hope of matching McNarry as a modeller, but I personally found it an inspiration to strive for my best.

Simply Wonderful!

Review Date: 2004-01-30
I bought this book when I started my Day Care business, and needed ideas for simple puppets. This book turned out to be the best out of a series of books I purchased in terms of offering ideas for me and the children. I really like that the ideas for the puppets are based on simple materials that you can find anywhere - including leftover supplies in your own home, like toilet paper rolls or orange juice cans. This teaches children to be resourceful and productive, and to use their imaginations.

Also, the ideas really work well. The puppets are simple, but there are enough ideas to build on that you could make really complex mechanical puppets, or moveable puppets if you like. This is a book that you and your children could grow on. I don't think, however, that if you are going to do art-puppets, this book would be for you, but it would be a good start for someone who has never made puppets before and wanted to get a good start.

The author, Barbara MacDonald Buetter, goes over at least a dozen different types of puppets and many different ways to decorate them. My children never tired of making the puppets. Finally, MacDonald Buetter gives ideas to build different types of theaters, from simple to more complex, and so we had a little puppet show! Wow!

A Must-Have!

Simple Puppets from Everyday Materials by Barbara MacDonald Buetter (New York: Sterling Publishing Co, Inc. 1998) is a great resource for imaginative construction of puppets. There is a strong focus on the use of recycled materials. She recommends keeping a box of such materials as paper tubes and plastic tabs just for such projects (and at last I've found a use for all the junk I've been saving!) and lists a slew of materials found in everyday life. These materials are great for use in the classroom since they are so easy to accumulate. The teacher can save such materials and send out a "wish list" to parents to encourage children to recycle and to use their imaginations to solve 3-dimensional building and visual problems.

She starts off with basic construction. Well-drawn, colorful diagrams illustrate how to braid, make chains, create 3-dimensional noses, crowns and cone hats. She instructs the reader to make faces in a mirror and practice drawing different expressions to show feeling and exaggerated feeling. She'll use spoons for a head and body, a glove for a family of people or ducks or a bee with flowers, a folded carton with inside straps as a hinged mouth, upside-down cans as heads, basic hand puppets with variations such as a kangaroo's pouch, wrestlers, jitterbugs and ballerinas with brass-fastener arms and legs, paper plate suns and Humpty-Dumpties with finger legs, tube-sock puppets, papier-mache puppets, and on and on. She even shows how a little salt sprinkled on wet paint can add great texture. There are even instruction of how to make different stages. Carrots and bananas make fun, if temporary, puppets with tooth pick attachments and pretzel eye-glasses.

Some of her most ingenious use of materials are the creation of movable parts. Linked ring paper chains easily move as marionette arms and legs (and trunks!) and even a caterpillar's body. A folded plastic lid makes a very durable "hinged" mouth. Accordion-folded paper makes for great caterpillars and jack-in-the-boxes. She even creates a dragon as variation, adding wings and an appropriate head. The puppet is moved by popsicle sticks affixed at opposite ends. Popsicle Stick puppets can move by hand movements alone, or be pushed upward through a paper cup to create to illusion of, say, a growing flower. She has a variation of a jumping-jack puppet using a spool, a straw and string. With a slightly larger tube over a smaller one, heads can turn, change expression or character, or if moved up and down, have eyes or mouths that open and close. She's very interested in exploring a full range of possibilities and encourages the reader to also do so.

Her projects encourage the use of imagination. The examples she uses are colorful and she'll even present multiple variations on one idea. There is a full range of characters presented, from people, to animals, to insects, to robots, and more. But she presents these only as guidelines, calling for the students' use of their own ideas. To her, puppets should be the vehicle of story-telling, and they are all the better when they are made by the performers.

This is a little gift book of inspirational quotes and sweet little drawings. It gives the quotes, the authors and their birth & death years, and a short phrase describing each author. For example, "'It's a very short trip. While alive, live!' Malcolm Forbes (1919-1990), American publisher." I have a box of greeting cards that are blank inside, and I like to write in a quote that fits with a card for a more personal thank you or birthday card, for example. These quotes are inspiring and upbeat and do just the trick.

A Great Book!

This fold out book/theatre is wonderful for my five year old daughter. She plays with it every day since Santa brought it for Christmas. It's great imaginative play, and it's great for familiarizing her with the art of ballet and the classical music of Tchaikovsky. The backdrops, sets, and dancing figures are enchanting. I can see my daughter playing with it for months and years to come.

WONDERFUL!!!!

This is a wonderful set. The details of the design are amazing. There is a drawer to hold the book, backdrops, and characters which makes it easy to keep everything together. It folds out easily into a stage and the backdrops are a breeze to slide into place. The dancers are on long sticks so they may be moved around the stage from above and there are holes in the stage so that characters may "stand" while other characters are in play. Everything came preassembled and it was ready to be played with right out of the box.

As if all of this wasn't good enough, there is a great book that comes along with it. It not only tells the story of the ballet in a simple narrative, it also has information about the story's history, the composer, and the choreographer. At the beginning of each new scene, the book shows the reader what characters and what backdrop should be used and the book even cues what track on the accompanying CD should be played! The illustrations are beautiful and the book can be enjoyed on its own without the play set.

My daughter is ten and she loves it; I certainly wouldn't think that eight is the oldest age that this set can be enjoyed. If a child is a serious student of ballet, I would expand the age range to the early teens. After seeing my daughter's copy, her repertory teacher is ordering it to use in company classes. If you are buying something for a child who is interested in ballet, I definitely recommend this product.
