A Valuable Breeder's Resource

When using the pedigree as a guide to an individual horse's genetic possibilities, one must consider the fact that pedigrees are only as good as the records that were kept on the individuals involved. Names alone do not predict the potential of an individual, and without good tracking back, the serious Miniature Horse breeder must rely more on the individual's conformation, performance, and production records. Outstanding Miniature Horse Stallions presents the best of the best in easy to understand, attractive volumes-valuable research tools for breeders.

Elder begins the stallion book with a detailed discussion of the foundation sires of the American Miniature Horse, and touches on the importance of the mares to which they were bred. She then continues with a discussion of the "right nick"-famous bloodline crosses that have repeated themselves many times over: Rowdy daughters to Hemlock Brooks Egyptian King, Boones Little Buckeroo crosses with Komokos Little Kings Supreme, and Orion Light Van't Huttenest crosses with Bond Dynamo, to name a few. The book contains 230 featured stallions, each with a photograph, pedigree, owner information, production and performance records. Elder goes on to tell the unique stories of several famous stallions, including Boones Little Buckeroo, Flying W Farms Little Blue Boy, Rowdy, and Gold Melody Boy. A glossary and full index complete this 304-page resource.

Entertaining and educational, in this reviewer's opinion, Outstanding Miniature Horse Stallions would be a good addition to any horseman's library.

I got my copy of this book last weekend and couldn't put it down! It is jam packed with information about the most influential stallions in the Miniature Horse breed. I particularly enjoyed the owners anecdotes describing how they found their horse, his most important wins, etc. Run, don't walk, to get your copy!!!

I have bought journals from this company in the past and hadn't seen them for a while. The passages at the bottom of the pages are helpful, and there is more than enough room to write your stuff.

Wonderful Journal!

This is an excellent journal to keep a written record of your life experiences in. The quotes are interesting and unusual, and the sketches that sometimes accompany them add character to the pages. It's just the right size to carry about anywhere. I bought mine to use during my first semester of college and have loved it, especially considering the price!

This is a great book for more "out there" puppeteers, artists and lovers of Paul Klee's art. His son, Felix, reminisces about his childhood with his artistic Papa, who built whimsical, sometimes scary and political, puppets for his young son's enjoyment. There are many photos of the restored puppets and Felix's stories about them and his father are charming.

Totally amazing unseen puppet photos and info!

I just got this newly published book and it is simply wonderful. I have a huge puppet book library and having just skimmed through it, I am thrilled to see all photos/puppets are ones I've never seen anywhere else. The puppets of Klee are an absolute inspiration, and I am so glad there is a new book that introduces them to a new generation. The only other book about these puppets is in the range of $500.00 if you can even find one, so this is an absolute steal, and probably will become collectible as well. This is put out by the new Paul Klee museum and text and photos are all fascinating. You must have this for your puppet library!

Canby's PERSIAN PAINTING is a gem. Rare in that it starts with clear, essential information on pigments and materials as well as methods and treatises, its succinct but masterful historical survey ranges from the Ilkhanids of the 14th century through the glorious Safavids culminating in Shah `Abbas of the late 16th and early 17th centuries and onward to the European synthesis and decline into the 18th c. century. Artists like Shayk Muhammad, Sadiqi Beg, Riza-yi `Abbasi and their unique works fill its pages with sensible commentary and beautiful examples of the stories of Rustam from Firdausi's SHAHNAMEH as well as individual album pieces and portraits. Annotated with excellent sources and index, it is a must for academic courses on Persian art. This book is as much a treasure as the Persian art it sensitively portrays.

This book is a visual delight packed with absorbing, well-written text, a generous sampling of over 460 illustrations, descriptive captions, and values. Adele Kenny infuses her subject with lively and energetic writing and approaches case art from both historical and design perspectives. Thus, the book is a valuable and important resource for photographica enthusiasts, Victoriana and Americana collectors, dealers, artists, and interior designers. This book is impressive for its readability, its content, and the quality of its illustrations.

A MUST-HAVE BOOK, ONE OF KENNY'S BEST

The outstanding production on this book and several hundred gorgeous

illustrations are matched by interesting, informative, and highly readable

text. The author's focus on mid-nineteenth century design styles includes

not only a wide range of daguerreotype cases, but their component parts as

well (pads, mats, and preservers). The book is about case art, but it also

includes the case makers and photographers, the design styles of the time,

and a historical perspective on life in America from 1840-1870. This unique

approach to case art is a departure from the norm and makes Kenny's book an

important reference text for photographica, Americana, and Victoriana

collectors along with artists, historians, and designers.

One of _Power Play_'s unique features is its CD-ROM,
which includes an interactive introduction to wayang golek
that covers wayang history, puppets, and performance practice.
The book's text focuses on the many layers of political maneuvering
that make Sundanese wayang golek such a vibrant cultural production.

The CD-ROM, with mp3 files (oops, should have been OGG/
VORBIS, I suppose), lots of photographs and video clips,
as well as an authoritative text, makes for a much more
entertaining introduction to wayang than any introductory chapter
ever could, and is worth the price of the book all by itself.
Which is not to say the book part isn't good, too -- lots
of ethnographic and biographic information and keen cultural
analysis.

I think Power Plays is a very good book. What I most like bout it is the way the book unfolds -- Weintraub seems to lead the reader slowly into the different modes of being of wayang golek and gets across a sensation of the density and depth of the genre and its practice. One of the manners in which this is done is the way the content is presented, slowly building the density of multiple forms of significance of Wayang. I also like the way the humor of the performances is actually presented in the book.

To me this is an ethnography in a very deep sense of the word -- the time the author spent there permeates the book and the fact that he has multiple entry points into the subject-- performance practices, structure of sound, discourses on wayang, changing policy attitudes throughout different historical moments, characters and their roles--- is something that one can only learn or perceive with a thorough understanding of the genre. The book covers the politization of entertainment, the discussion of the relation between policy and performance; the fun people have perofmring or listening to Wayang Golek and the significance of that. I also found the discussion of sound structure and changing tuning of instruments and their social signification a crucial contribution of the book.

I think this is a really good book that can stand as an excellent example of how ethnography is done in a globalized world.

Lush, elegant art from Victorian England

This volume draws together some of the most remarkable paintings and sketches done by the Pre-Raphaelites during the mid-1800's. This movement, which focused on the appreciation of beauty through artistic interpretation of legend and literature, produced some of the most stunning works of art to date.

What I like about this book in particular, is that unlike many books, it does not neglect the work of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, brother of the poet Christina Rossetti. In my opinion, Dante (whose painting "Proserpine" appears on the cover of this book, is the heart and soul of the "Pre-Raphaelite Vision" and is too often left out. Do yourself a favor and buy this book.

A perfect romantic gift!

"Some were painted almost obsessively, and with the passing of time have come to represent an ideal beauty"

This tiny book is filled with works by Dante Gabriel Rosetti, Arthur Hughes, Frederick Sandys, Edward Burne-Jones, William Holden Hunt, Albert Joseph Moore, and Eveyln De Morgan. In its pages you will find all the romantic, now 'posterized' images of this remarkable group of painters.

The paintings are interwoven with the beautiful poetry that inspired them and makes it a lovely and tender tribute to any woman. (or a not so shabby guide book for those poor souls out there that just don't know how to be romantic!)

Rossetti is a master of the misty eyed, Sandys finds that little resident saucy side that makes every woman human, and Burne-Jones seems to add an extra element of wisdom to the women that he paints.

These are the paintings that are beloved by so many - never offensive, always relaxing and full of brilliant color. Who could forget Moore's 'Midsummer' with its bright orange fabric against such a gentle sleeper? Or 'Love's Shadow' with that bright red hair? These are the only examples I can think of that use such bright color and still result in such soothing images.

I've yet to find a better collection of these beloved works, and the price and portability of this one can't be beat. Most of these works are from private collections or are in European museums so a lovely book like this makes them accessible to us all.

A great guide

Like most of the people looking up this book, and books like it, I have been a Muppet fan for as long as I can remember. The idea of making puppets has been an interest for almost as long. Now that I have my own children this is as good a time as any and this book is a great place to start.

I bought this book, Puppetmania (also by John Kennedy), and the Foam Book and would suggest all of them to beginning (and maybe even seasoned) puppet makers. Between the three books very little information is repeated and all of it is informative.

This book, specifically, not only covers hand puppets but some rather fun projects that can be done with the kids, including the spoon frog and the shoebox monster.

So, if you are a parent looking for puppet projects to do with the kids, an amateur looking to get started, or a puppet vet looking to for something different then it is well worth checking this book out.

Let the Puppet making begin!

John Kennedy has really out done himsef with this book. There is an overwhelming wealth of ideas and techniques included. Not to mention step-by-step detailed instructions and colorful photos to walk you through it. This book would be great for a budding puppeteer, teacher,or anyone interested in arts and crafts. Of all the puppet books I have viewed, this one would be in my top 5 to recommend.
