Photographic Cases: A Must-Have for Collectors & DealersReview Date: 2001-11-03
A MUST-HAVE BOOK, ONE OF KENNY'S BESTReview Date: 2001-11-03
illustrations are matched by interesting, informative, and highly readable
text. The author's focus on mid-nineteenth century design styles includes
not only a wide range of daguerreotype cases, but their component parts as
well (pads, mats, and preservers). The book is about case art, but it also
includes the case makers and photographers, the design styles of the time,
and a historical perspective on life in America from 1840-1870. This unique
approach to case art is a departure from the norm and makes Kenny's book an
important reference text for photographica, Americana, and Victoriana
collectors along with artists, historians, and designers.

H Spiller's reviewReview Date: 2004-11-28
which includes an interactive introduction to wayang golek
that covers wayang history, puppets, and performance practice.
The book's text focuses on the many layers of political maneuvering
that make Sundanese wayang golek such a vibrant cultural production.
The CD-ROM, with mp3 files (oops, should have been OGG/
VORBIS, I suppose), lots of photographs and video clips,
as well as an authoritative text, makes for a much more
entertaining introduction to wayang than any introductory chapter
ever could, and is worth the price of the book all by itself.
Which is not to say the book part isn't good, too -- lots
of ethnographic and biographic information and keen cultural
analysis.

Power PlaysReview Date: 2005-01-25
To me this is an ethnography in a very deep sense of the word -- the time the author spent there permeates the book and the fact that he has multiple entry points into the subject-- performance practices, structure of sound, discourses on wayang, changing policy attitudes throughout different historical moments, characters and their roles--- is something that one can only learn or perceive with a thorough understanding of the genre. The book covers the politization of entertainment, the discussion of the relation between policy and performance; the fun people have perofmring or listening to Wayang Golek and the significance of that. I also found the discussion of sound structure and changing tuning of instruments and their social signification a crucial contribution of the book.
I think this is a really good book that can stand as an excellent example of how ethnography is done in a globalized world.

Lush, elegant art from Victorian EnglandReview Date: 2000-06-06
What I like about this book in particular, is that unlike many books, it does not neglect the work of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, brother of the poet Christina Rossetti. In my opinion, Dante (whose painting "Proserpine" appears on the cover of this book, is the heart and soul of the "Pre-Raphaelite Vision" and is too often left out. Do yourself a favor and buy this book.
A perfect romantic gift!Review Date: 2000-06-03
This tiny book is filled with works by Dante Gabriel Rosetti, Arthur Hughes, Frederick Sandys, Edward Burne-Jones, William Holden Hunt, Albert Joseph Moore, and Eveyln De Morgan. In its pages you will find all the romantic, now 'posterized' images of this remarkable group of painters.
The paintings are interwoven with the beautiful poetry that inspired them and makes it a lovely and tender tribute to any woman. (or a not so shabby guide book for those poor souls out there that just don't know how to be romantic!)
Rossetti is a master of the misty eyed, Sandys finds that little resident saucy side that makes every woman human, and Burne-Jones seems to add an extra element of wisdom to the women that he paints.
These are the paintings that are beloved by so many - never offensive, always relaxing and full of brilliant color. Who could forget Moore's 'Midsummer' with its bright orange fabric against such a gentle sleeper? Or 'Love's Shadow' with that bright red hair? These are the only examples I can think of that use such bright color and still result in such soothing images.
I've yet to find a better collection of these beloved works, and the price and portability of this one can't be beat. Most of these works are from private collections or are in European museums so a lovely book like this makes them accessible to us all.

A great guide Review Date: 2008-07-25
I bought this book, Puppetmania (also by John Kennedy), and the Foam Book and would suggest all of them to beginning (and maybe even seasoned) puppet makers. Between the three books very little information is repeated and all of it is informative.
This book, specifically, not only covers hand puppets but some rather fun projects that can be done with the kids, including the spoon frog and the shoebox monster.
So, if you are a parent looking for puppet projects to do with the kids, an amateur looking to get started, or a puppet vet looking to for something different then it is well worth checking this book out.

Elder begins the stallion book with a detailed discussion of the foundation sires of the American Miniature Horse, and touches on the importance of the mares to which they were bred. She then continues with a discussion of the "right nick"-famous bloodline crosses that have repeated themselves many times over: Rowdy daughters to Hemlock Brooks Egyptian King, Boones Little Buckeroo crosses with Komokos Little Kings Supreme, and Orion Light Van't Huttenest crosses with Bond Dynamo, to name a few. The book contains 230 featured stallions, each with a photograph, pedigree, owner information, production and performance records. Elder goes on to tell the unique stories of several famous stallions, including Boones Little Buckeroo, Flying W Farms Little Blue Boy, Rowdy, and Gold Melody Boy. A glossary and full index complete this 304-page resource.
Entertaining and educational, in this reviewer's opinion, Outstanding Miniature Horse Stallions would be a good addition to any horseman's library.
