Ordered as a Christmas gift for my 10 year old son and he absolutely loves it. He started out following the book's drawing directions and soon branched off into freehand using what he learned from the book.
A definite must for a beginning artist. It's a fun and interesting way to learn the basics.

This book teaches great skills for those just wanting to learn the art of cartooning. I highly recomend it for your artistic child who can broadin his/or her artistic views of the world. Cartooning is also great for young children and this book makes it great.

Do you want edge-of-your-seat excitment? A real thriller that'll scare your pants off? Well you're not gonna find it here, but you will find the BEST cartooning book ever. With sections on backrounds, heads, bodies, and even caracatures, the only thing that you might find wrong with it is that, like it says, it's only the Basics. You'll wish it will go on for ever and ever and ever and ever and ever...

I originally bought this book for my son when he was 2. It was his favorite for many years. It has been passed down and now my youngest daughter has me read it to her every night. After 6 years it is finally starting to fall apart. I would love to replace it as I can see it will get much more use, before it is finally retired from our family. No other book has gotten this much attention from all of my children!

When my twins were two they wanted to read this book every night for almost a year! It is a very cute book. My boys are now four and we just got this book out for Christmas again. I wish it was in print - our copies have fallen apart from reading them so much!!

This book is wonderful. My 11 month old son received it as a party favor. This is the only book he actually hands to us to read...and it has to be read several times. I never leave home without it. I also bought a couple of more copies for the grandparents houses. Inexpensive and perfect for little hands!

I bought this for my son when he was 8 mos. old. He loved the pictures and different colors. He is now 12 mos and entertains himself by flipping through the pages in search of the elephants. This is a small book, so it's perfect for little hands. Don't expect a great learning experience from it, but it does cover basic colors and a few objects related to the train (freight car, caboose) and has cute clowns in every color, but someday my son will probably ask why the train carries green balloons....

What a great "little" book. The short quotes are words of inspiration that can be shared others throughout the day.

This "little" book has inspired me to have a "little" book club, whereas after I've read 1 page, I pass it on to a co-worker. It has become a great way to encourage communication on a positive level.

Dick Sing's book on how to make miniature bird houses is a great learning resource. It does focus on bird houses but it also teaches the person how to make and use small jigs so you can turn the piece around and finish the bottom. It's step by step method is easy to follow. For the money you will find yourself in the workshop spending hour after hour making these. It's fun.

One of the true originals. One of the great poets who seem to invent a language, a world of metaphor of her own. A delight in her difficulty and a deep pleasure in her sombre tunes.

"Exultation is the going of an inland soul to sea/ Past the headlands , past the houses / into deep Eternity. "

Hidden meaning and insight in every poem.............

I love poetry but had not read many if any of emily dickinson so I picked this up to read in my spare time. At first glance the book and poems seemed so simple and easy to read. I thought it would be a small little delight to read her short poems while waiting in the car, or at the bank, in line at the grocier, but as I embarked on a stolen moment with the poems of emily dickinson you discover her poems are hardly simple.

Every poem seems has more than one meaning. You can truely see how complicated this simple woman must have been even in her observations.

I have been delighted by her insight and each poem makes me wonder of the woman who wrote them. A lovely read.

A prism which captures the white light of reality
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2001-06-22
Just as a prism breaks up light into a band of colors - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet - and their infinite gradations, so do Emily Dickinson's poems become, as it were, a prism which captures the white light of reality, a reality which as it flows through the prism of her poem explodes into a multiplicity of meanings.

It is the rich suggestiveness of her poems, a suggestiveness which generates an incredible range of meanings, that prevents us from ever being able to say (to continue the metaphor) that a given poem is 'about red' or 'about blue,' because her poems, as US critic Robert Weisbuch has observed, are in fact about _everything_. This is what makes her so unique, and this is why she appeals to every kind of reader (or certainly to open-minded ones) and even to children.

Emily Dickinson's poetry is one of the wonders of the world.

Highly recommended for family and community library children's books collections, Farmyard Tales Storybook by Heather Amery is a high-spirited children's storybook filled with a wealth of wonderfully entertaining tales for young readers concerning adventures on the farm. Cheery and colorful illustrations by Stephen Cartwright pepper these thoroughly delightful stories of finding lost animals, daily chores, and learning the ins and outs of farm life.

Lastly, the contents are:
Pig Gets Stuck
Scarecrow's Secret
The Naughty Sheep
The Runaway Tractor
The Snow Storm
The Grumpy Goat
Tractor in Trouble
Camping Out

This book is one of my children's favorites. (3 year olds) The stories are long enough to be interesting and involved without being TOO long. The illustrations are LOVELY. Each page has a little yellow duck "hidden" on the page that the kids have fun trying to find. I have 2 of the Farmyard Tales books and will likely buy more.

An Excellent and Well Done Resource

Review Date: 2008-08-04
In a hobby field where there are precious few resources, most of them lengthy and incomplete lists of models, Olson's book, "GM In Miniature" is a very pleasant surprise and a great value. It's chock full of professional quality photos. This alone would make it worth the purchase price but Randall has also included a wealth of background information on individual models and even more 'insider' perspective on the manufacturer's catering to this area of the hobby.

I have his "Ford In Miniature" and, between the two book, I find myself going back to them as reference sources but I also find myself paging through the books just for the pleasure and joy of seeing the pictures and reading the commentary. They're well written, well edited and well composed. Bring on more!

Another great one!

I thought the Ford book was very well done. But this one's even better! With a cut-off date of 1954,can we expect another one? The photography is EXCELLENT! I hope this series continues! Mopar? Independents? We can only sit back and wait!

Another excellent book from Randall Olson

A wonderful reference book, in addition to "Ford in Miniature". While it mainly features "upscale" white-metal hand-built 1:43 scale cars, it also give credit to some inexpensive diecast cars that are done well. This book is also an "education" on how these cars are made...most of them consisting of up to 100 separate parts, taking up to 10 hours to assemble. Print and paper quality is excellent.

Gulliver's Travels is definatley a classic. Anybody looking for a book to read should definatley check into this one if they have not already read it. Even if you have a second time would only do you good! Gullives Travles is a book that can reach most levels of reading with the content. A few words a big, but they can be bypassed. Swift has definatley done himself well with this one, and the great part about it is that if you like the book, there are also movies that can be rented of Gullivers Travels. All in all the book is a good book.

My son got this for Christmas last year. It took him a while to get to it, but when he started reading it, he was hooked. He did not want this book to end. The artwork is lovely, and the story-telling is first rate as well, with the tale taking a new twist every few pages.

So if you want an adventure story for children, this one should really hold their attention and make them want to read.

A masterful introduction for kids to the story of Gulliver

"Gulliver's Travels" is arguably the greatest work on satire written in the English language, but while it might look like a children's book it is not really one. In "Gulliver in Lilliput" the first part of Jonathan Swift's story is retold by Margaret Hodges. This covers Gulliver's shipwreck, his being captured by the miniature Lilliputians, his involvement in the war with Blefuscu, and, in an effort to provide narrative completeness, with return to England. Hodges gets high marks for adapting the story to younger readers, now presented as a children's tale, without completely watering down Swift's sharp satire, although clearly this version emphasizes more of a sense of fun for the proceedings. Hodges is providing an abbreviated version of the original, yet she has managed to keep the important details while working in some of Swift's original language, such as what the Lilliputians say in their own language. Those who have read the original will be impressed with this retelling of the first part of the classic story.

What makes this volume even more special are the sepia-toned pen and watercolor illustrations by Kimberly Bulcken Root. In keeping with the spirit of the story she has worked all sorts of humor and wit into her detailed illustrations of Gulliver in the land of the six-inch tall Lilliputians. You will really want to pay attention to the details of each and every picture, because there is a lot to be found. Taken together, the text and illustrations of "Gulliver in Lilliput" provide a marvelous introduction to Swift's famous tale intended for young readers in grades 3-6. Younger readers might not be able to appreciate Swift's satirical attacks, but the important thing here is that they will develop a sense of affection for the work and one day will pick up the original to enjoy the full force of his assault on the conventions of 18th-century society (my recommendation would be the annotated version of "Gulliver's Travels," which will provide all of the details as to what Swift is really doing).
