This book is a must-read for anyone planning on breeding a dog. No one plans on making a bad dog, but it happens all the time, and this book explains step-by-step how to avoid that. This book will help you to raise puppies that are confident, trainable, and ready for life in human society. I read this book in 4 hours, but refer back to it at least once a week (while I have puppies). If every breeder read this, our animal shelters would quickly empty. Save the Canines-READ THIS BOOK!

Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-26
This book is the complete guide for all owners of greyhounds and other sighthounds, especially those lucky owners of ex-racers. The sometimes specialised care, feeding and veterinary attention necessary for healthy greys is explained here in great detail. This book is an excellent everyday guide, as well as a great emergency reference. Every greyhound owner should have one-share it with your adoption group, and definitely show it to your vet.

Yes, this is 'THE' cat genetics book :)

There are cat breeders, and there are Cat Breeders! If litter constantly crumbles off your shoes, and you don't 'know' a cat until you've seen its' pedigree, you're a Cat Nerd :] Mastering Robinson's book will be your last 'final' to achieving Grand Champion Cat Nerd status! I must admit to a personal bias in favor of this book as I enjoy combing apart a puzzling test cross as much as playing with kittens! This is one *serious* book! As with most things genetic, Robinson has generated considerable controversy with certain of his assertions and conclusions, but this is without a doubt 'The Merk' for serious cat breeders. His work begins with a quick refresher for those in need. But frankly, if you're an 'old timer' who has never pulled at least a B in a full-blown 300 level Mendelian genetics course, you'll be in over your head by page five. There are separate sections addressing individual breeds and type, providing much of the information you've always wondered about. With this book as a foundation you can move your breeding program into the realm of testable objective research. You'll know how to determine, for example, if a particular coat pattern results from the heterozygotic interaction of codominant alleles, from the presence of an unlinked modifier gene, or if you really have a new dominant mutant. Ooooooh!!! With this book you will evolve an analytical eye, enabling you to extract meaningful details from the haphazard work of hobby breeders - a great time saving resource for a serious breeder. Are you working with a clear goal in mind, or just putting cats together? The good news: this is an advanced text for a rare few :) The bad news: this is an advanced text for a rare few :( If you've found this review, have read the book, and would like to indulge in some technical prose with a fellow Cat Nerd, please write - it's lonely out here! Notes on a Horsethief

THE HANGING IN THE FOALING BARN is the book many of us have been looking for ever since the tragic death of Heather Lewis, who wrote about horses and horse people with an unequalled insight and depth. Susan Starr Richards, who has been breeding horses for decades, doesn't have Heather Lewis' transgressive anger and transformative vision, but she is a delectable writer, who knows Kentucky and its creatures animal and human like she knows the delicate lines that trace the palm of her hand. Like Dick Francis, the detective story writer whose return we are awaiting for bated breath, Starr Richards knows how to animate the denizens of the track and the breeding shed. In our house, we call her, the "Dick Francis of high art."

Worklng in the modernist, Agrarian tradition of Allen Tate, Robert Penn Warren, Peter Taylor, and Andrew Lytle, Starr Richards isn't afraid to plow these well worn fields with a welcome female energy. While racing and touting have long been masculinist provinces, her stories go into the hearts and minds of her animals and their jockeys and trainers. In this way she reminds me of the wonderful author of SEABISCUIT, the one who has agoraphobia and won't go to her own book signings. And yet this author, caught up in fiction, has other interests besides horseflesh. One of the best stories here has nothing to do with the breed, and that is "Magic Lantern," which investigates the mystery of photography by focussing on the relict of a now-dead photographer genius, who made oodles of pictures of her the way Stieglitz obsessively photographed Georgis O'Keeffe, and how the "widow" feels when she must develop all these photos after his death, for him who is no longer here to do so. The model, Barbara, becomes the model of another phhotographer; wise Charlotte, observing their love affair, ponders the affinities between the "shutter" of the camera and the dangerous shudder of orgasm. Both let you into places that sometimes, one regrets having seen. And the author has unexpected reserves of a Barney-Fife like humor (warning, mild spoilers ahead)"

"Still, there was Barbara, not killed at all. Blooming, in fact. Pregnant, in fact. Hugh would at last have the family to match his mustache." I wonder if it's too early to nominate prize-winning author Susan Starr Richards for the greatest honor of them all--the next Pulitzer Prize.
