Jorge Figueredo has done a monumental job in presenting the statistical history of Cuban baseball over a period of more than 80 years.
This book provides, not only statistics of the legendary Cuban players (Mendez, Oms, Torriente, etc.), and the great Negro league players (Jud Wilson, Dobie Moore, Oscar Charleston, etc.), it also pprovides statistics of the major league players, who played in the Cuban Winter League during the major league off-season - players like Charlie Dressen, Eddie Brown, and Jimmy Cooney.
'Cuban Baseball' is a classic, and it will be a standard reference book for baseball fans and historians, for many decades.
Outstanding job Jorge!!!!

Great book that looks at all the key players individualy with some biographic material and briefs on the the important accomplisments and great stats of each player in Chicago Cubs history. With awesome individual photography from the early 1906-1908 team when the Cubs were considered winners.. Three Fingers Brown (a great shot of what his hand actually looked like) Tinkers, Evers & Chance, Solly Hofman.. and many more. Has pictures of the great ones that got away. Lou Brock, Joe Carter, Rafael Palmeiro... to some of the present greats Kerry Wood Sammy Sosa. You will not look at this book and think what about this player because he covers every memorable player with a few that you may have forgotten as a bonus. There are over 200 pictures and the book is well made Glossy pages and Hardcover.

Curling: The History, The Players, The Game

A curling classic

Warren Hansen's 1999 book, Curling: The History, The Players, The Game, is probably the best general book on the sport of curling. The biggest problem with it is that it's out of print and hard to find. (I borrowed a copy from the Edmonton Public Library.)
Hansen, director of event management and media relations for the Canadian Curling Association, is a former Brier winner and founder of national curling schools. He is uniquely well placed to write this book.
Warren Hansen begins the book with the story of his own love of curling and his curling career. The story is well told and there is no hint of self-indulgence in his telling it.
He then provides a relatively brief history of curling - again, interesting and well told - before moving on to a discussion of the growth of competitive curling in Canada.
Hansen then gives brief biographies of 19 top men's and women's skips. Making such a list is, of course, a minefield. Some may quibble that all 17 Canadians chosen for this list - from Ken Watson to Sandra Schmirler -- hail from Ontario or, mainly, the Prairies. But it's hard to dispute Hansen's list and one has to give him credit for treating fairly those such as Ed Werenich with whom he crossed swords in his job with the CCA. All in all, he does an admirable job of recapping the careers of these skips and no doubt had to dig through some archives to provide such full accounts.
Hansen goes on to provide a thorough analysis of how to develop a good delivery - his description of that alone is well worth the price of this book. He analyzes curling strategy in light of the development of the free guard zone in the 1990s. The book concludes with 2 1/2 pages that examine the future of curling. This little conclusion has the qualities that permeate the book. It is honest, objective, fair and interesting.
This book is also well and thoughtfully illustrated. My only complaint is that the section on physical conditioning for curling is far too brief and contains the bizarre advice that "the recreational player needs to spend only about five minutes" a day on aerobic conditioning.
Nevertheless, a lot of planning, hard work, research and quality editing went into this book. It is a true classic. One can only hope that an updated version will soon find its way into print.

Excellent book on theater for high school students!

Now let me say that just because my mom wrote this book, it doesn't mean that I'm raving about it because of that fact. Indeed, it is a great book that not many would think to read. It is part of a three volume set about the history of theater. Anyone who is interested in theater or acting would appreciate these works because of their rich content and beautiful photographs that take you to the beginning and through different cultures that all celebrate the arts and theater. It is aimed at high school students, although others may benefit from reading these works. All in all I think with all the time and research that was put into these books shows thoughout their pages.

A must for an elementary teacher's HIV & AIDS lesson.
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1997-07-05
"Daddy and Me" presents the realities of living with a parent who has contracted the HIV virus. I've read this book to fourth grade students for the past two years as a part of our Human Sexuality/HIV curriculum that is mandated by our district. Both years the children came away with new insights into the AIDS crisis. The book is an excellent tool to initiate the lesson. Although I have read the book many times, I still find it difficult to get through without crying.

Dan Marino,WOW what a player. Dan has broken many records and they are all in this book. This fantastic book shows how generous Danin was. He was one of the only NFL players to help charaties in need. Oh yeah, and is lucky number 13, he acctully picked that number when his dad was the coach and he was the last one to pick his uniform,13 was an unlucky number back then. Read about this fact and million of others as you flip through this tremendous book. Richard Rambeck did an awesome job writing this book. I recommend this great book to anyone.
