Amazing book, talented writer

I am a very recent baseball fan, partially as a result of Mark Schraf and this book. He was my chemistry professor this summer and I learned of his book and bought it for my dad for his birthday, later buying one for myself, too. Every poem in this book is beautifully written. Even though I don't know the story behind all the poems, Mr. Schraf and his book have really opened me up to baseball, and I am eager to learn the hidden meanings of these poems. Each poem is unique in it's own way: some are insanely funny, some sad and sentimental. He uses many different styles of poetry, too. I think everyone needs a dose of baseball, especially by this intelligent, creative author.

How to Implement Enterprise-wide ABM Systems
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 1999-03-11
Cornerstones of Decision Making provides an excellent perspective and grasp of the conceptual, technical, and practical aspects of enterprise activity-based management (ABM) and activity-based costing (ABC). It emphasizes the ultimate aim of enterprise-wide ABM systems-helping and improving the collective decision making throughout an organization. The generalizations regarding ABM are made practical by using 14 specific case studies of implementations of ABM systems. These studies extend far beyond manufacturing; they include service, not-for-profit, and government organizations. Examples are Blue Cross, Blue Shield, DHL, GTE Supply, and CinCFleet. Many cases span not only several continents but also industry segments and market size. Some organizations are trying to skip pilot projects and move directly to full enterprise-wide rollouts of ABM. Case examples includes American Seating and John Deere Health Care, Inc. The cases include the reports and reaction of the ABM Team members and key organization executives who have valuable implementation experiences to share. A highlight of the book is the Lessons Learned section that ends each case. Each lesson provides a brief generalization that ties directly to the individual case. Of course, there are several lessons that permeate nearly all the cases. Examples include the importance of full-time cross sectional teams, training, patience, and persistence. Above all, as the book's title implies, never lose sight of your objectives. These objectives should focus on improving collective decision making by operating managers. I strongly recommend this book for anybody who wants up-to-date knowledge about both the concepts and practices of enterprise-wide ABM. Its cases vividly illustrate the problems and solutions of how to implement ABM systems that improve collective decision making.

I grew up watching the Cowboys play. I was just 3 years old when Bob started his professional career. In our house, Thanksgiving was a day of Cowboy Football!!!

Very enjoyable read!!! It is fun to learn about the game from an inside point-of-view.

From his humble beginning, through his amazing career, and post-football life.
Thanks Bob, for writing this book!!!

Quite simply, one of the greatest books ever written
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 3 total.

H.G. Wells was one of those writers who could only be counted as too good for the Nobel Prize, just like James Joyce or Tolstoy or Proust. In 'The Croquet Player' he has not only produced his best book but one of the greatest books ever written.

I would rather not reveal details of the story. It will suffice to say that it concerns the origins of human nature, or rather, of human brutality, selfishness, greed. (In fact, I could hardly reveal any details of the story, since the last chapter negates the entire book!)

What tells it apart from so many treatises on human nature and the origins of evil is that it is narrated by an altogether down-to-earth bloke, the eponimous croquet player, which gives it an even sharper feeling of reality and foreboding. Nothing wrong or criminal actually happens in the croquet player's world, so to speak. And in the story he is told, the contours of evil are elusive: a dog beaten to death; a drunked parson beating up his wife; that dreadful fear and paranoia in a land that never was. That is what makes it ultimately so compelling. So mind-changing as 'Catcher in the rye'. So disquieting.

Jorge Luis Borges, the greatest of Argentinian writers, once made a list of the greatest books ever. In it he included 'The Croquet Player', for reasons that you will find obvious once you read it. As all masterpieces, exactly why is it so good is not entirely explainable. Be warned, though: this book leaves a disquiet behind that can last for days, weeks, even months. Do not read it if you like your books harmless and cosy. Do not read it unless you are unable to agree with Borges: 'in here he [Wells] describes a degenerating society that could be London or Buenos Aires and the guilty ones, my friend, are you and I.'

I give five stars to "The Croquet Player" by HG Wells not only because it is one of his better, more symbolically controlled works, but because of its overall modern styling & texture. In a mere novella, Wells is able to build up a powerful character analysis that still has far-reaching implications to Western Civilization. Of course, much of the finesse of the narrative is in its openness of interpretation. When I read this book, I think of Orson Welles directing the action in his high, sinister style. The narrative is framed by a man in his thirties whose life has been shaped by his single aunt's wealth. They are excellent croquet players, & live a life of ease. One day meets a man on a terrace, a man with an unusual story. From there it gets more & more intense--& then another man appears--& suddenly answers & questions become indistinguishable! The role of croquet is skillfully understated yet poignant, culminating in more than an evening's worth of introspection/discussion. One of the better writings of Wells', challenging any living writer to express timeless ideas so artistically & succinctly. Plus, for the time investment, this book gives a thousand times back in stimulation!

People need to take a real good look and see what the primary function of our Children and Youth Services is. It seems that they operate in such a way to fit their own needs and not the needs of the children. I rate this book a five star. Why should we be held responsible for what we do while they bury their mistakes within the system. It is about time these so called Social Workers started be held accountable for destroying people's lives.

I like this book. I like black baseball players. Jackie Robinson is my hero, he played for the Dodgers, and was very black. I think that I will start liking Thomas Edison Alston better because of his story on page 108-09. He was a tall black man from North Carolina, I live in South Carolina so that is close to my home. I am not black though, if that matters to you. I have a learning disorder and writing this essay will help with bettering my condition. I think that if I lived in 1947-59 I would like black people better than those mean white baseball players did. I mean some of those players names I have heard before because they had strong black powers to hit the ball far, like Hank Aaron, he played in Atlanta, I live near where he played too, and my daddy watched him hit home runs very far. He was number 44.

Mental Toughness,

Responsibility
and Goal Setting.

A short chapter also outlines the "Hitters Success Chain" routine.
