The DiMaggio Chronicles. Don't you wish? It's my most treasured baseball collection. And hey, I'm King Carl's cousin. You couldn't have it for million bucks. Then again, I'll sell it to you wholesale... Never!

This is a must if you are a fan of Joltin' Joe or the Yankees or just a baseball fan in general. Also included are the stats for Joe's entire minor- and major-league career. Many Photos. Enjoy!

This is an excellent book. It tells the true story of a college football hero. This book exudes the inspiration, thoughtfullness, and love that Chucky shared with so many people before his passing.

A book really comes alive when it's about someone you knew. Mr. Woody did a wonderful job in bringing out Chucky's finest qualities: courage, determination, friendliness, and his ability to overcome lifes obstacles. And, since this book was about more than just Chucky and tells a wonderful life-story, it adds meaning and another dimension to the great person I went to high school with. This book should be required reading for all high school students, especially athletes. Thumbs Up, Mr. Woody!

This book helped a great deal. I bought it for my nephew, who wants to be an actor, but I read it before giving it to him. Wow! It really tells you like it is. My nephew thought it was great too. He's already well on his way to being a star and "Do You Want To Be An Actor?" gave him his start.
GREAT BOOK. DON'T GET INTO ACTING WITHOUT READING IT!

I was surprised at how good I actualy felt about wanting to be an actor after reading this book. Do You Want To Be An Actor? answered so many questions that I had about being an actor. Real actors and casting directors and agents share their experinces with the reader and that is great information. It helped to answer questions that I didn't even know I had. Perfect for parents that have kids who want to be actors.
A must have!

Satchel Paige is an enigmatic figure in american histroy. Mention his name, people inevitably think of the negro leagues,or thta terrible bingo long movie. In fact, Paige was ,in many repects, the first modern ballplayer. He played for a percentage of the gate, would only pitch a couple of innings in these contests, had no compuction about jumping from team to team{or country to country}The minstel show, stephifetchit aura that he calculated with the all too eager white press was, of course, a huge ruse. He was a sometimes bitter man{quite understandably so}He knew, instinctively, that he was the best pitcher in the world{although, curiosly, his peers voted Smokey Joe williams better in a 1950 vote in the Pittsburgh Courrier} He despsed the Jim Crow laws, and what he had to do to get around them. HIs civil rights stands were taken in the 20's 30's and 40's, when such things often meant death. He pitched for what might have been the greatest team of all time{the Pittsburgh crawfords of the early 30's] Dimaggio called him ethe toughest pitcher he ever hit against. All of these nuggets are in this book. Mr. Ribowsky did a fine job here. Paige is a figure who should be celebrated for what he was:an american original,a species often sighted but rarely seen. A wonderful book!

After reading this book, I am utterly convinced that Satchel Paige is as much of a baseball legend as a Ty Cobb or Babe Ruth. This book not only entertains but it fascinates, so much that I would'nt be suprised if someone mistook this biography for a peice of baseball folklore or a non fictitious work designed to capture the imaginations of baseball fans. This book portrays the life of Robert Leroy Satchel Paige in a most interesting way. In some cases he stands biggerthan life portrayed as a demi-god in the face of the gods of Major League Baseball and in some cases his mortality is revealed in the very midst of his immortality, and this is what makes this portrayal so unique.

I read this book every few years to go back to a time when I first discovered America's past-time. There has never been a more magical team than the New York Mets in 1986. It was more than the play everyone remembers--the ball Mookie Wilson's hit that rolled between Bill Buckner's legs when he "peeked" at Mookie hustling down the line. That play was symballic of the entire Mets playoff run. As you read this book, you sit beside Gary Carter during each game of the Mets/Astros NL Series and the Mets/Red Sox World Series. You get a true behind-the-scenes picture of what happens in the dugout, on the field, and in the clubhouse. Any baseball fan, whether or not you love the mets, will love this book.

In this delightful Steig classic Kate and Caleb argue over something silly. A furious Caleb wanders into the forest and falls asleep under a tree. While he dreams, a witch turns him into a dog. He comes home, of course, but can only bark. The bereft Kate wonders what became of her faithful mate, fearful that he did not know how much she cared, until one night robbers steal into the house, her dog scares them off and the witch's evil spell is undone. When Caleb is once again himself, he resumes a loving life with Kate. A great story to show kids that while grownups sometimes argue, they still love one another, and usually make up.

A friend showed me this book, I read it and bought it for my grand-daughter. It is full of bright, lively dialog and moves right along. While spending a season on the school softball team the girls encounter a few hardball lessions about growing up, getting along with each other and developing their emotional maturity. I recommend Easy Out highly.

When I first read THE EDUCATION OF A POKER PLAYER by Herbert O Yardley, I was about fifteen and had never played poker. I thought it was a good read about the Bildingsroman growth of a young boy, sort of like David Copperfield cutting his teeth in the poker salons in mid 19th century rural America. Yardley was a smart kid who learned the basics of hard-nosed poker from his poker sensei Monty. In later years after I had begun to play poker, I remembered Yardley's book and reread it, this time for his sage advice. What I found was that Yardley's wisdom on the felt table has transcended time. Every future book on poker theory that I later read was neither as informative or as enjoyable as this one. Highly recommended.

After reading many books on poker, I keep returning to the first book I have ever read on the art of poker playing. Zen and the Art of Poker is a good book on how our inner selves influence our actions. Silberstang explains the finer points of the game, but one does not need any special training to make money following Yardley's advice. In clear, simple examples, Yardley can make anyone a winner, with the caviat that not everyone will follow his instructions to the letter. Yardley has the techniques, but it is up to the player to have the discipline to stick to the task.
