Beautiful book of snapshots of Susi Bradfield's life, arriving in the UK on the Kindertransport, all the joys and sorrows leading up to the present day, where she is still more than evidently surrounded by her loving family. A must read!

Some people refer to this as the "c" bible
This book is not cluttered with C++ forcing you to figure out what part is "c".

You may think that this book is not for beginners. However it is actually more of a combination of dictionary and ["The Elements of Style" ISBN: 020530902X] for the "c" language

This does of course include ANSI c, which is transportable to all platforms. It also states that," Since the ANSI c library is in many cases modeled on Unix facilities, this could may help your understanding of the library as well."

This book should be used as a prerequisite to c communications books.

The original and foremost Ayurvedic text.
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-28
If you are studying Ayurveda either officially or on your own, then almost everything you read in modern paperbacks about the subject has been culled form the Charaka Samita. This edition, in four volumes, gives the Sanskrit text along with a fairly good English translation. Printed and bound in India it is well produced while not being up to western standards, but in many ways that only adds to the mystery and excitement of holding a 3000 year old text in your hands. And the principles of health that worked then still work today...this is not the science of speculation, but revealed truth. Many modern works will give you this information, but having the original to consult is something special.

Be amazed ... and go see the movie afterwards !

If you love Nepal, Tibet and it's beautifull people, you'll love this book. The stunning pictures tell a great story. About the people in the Dolpho region. They trade salt against food. But to do so, they have to travel hard miles trough a stunning but barren country, with incredible moutains, lakes and of course a caravan of yaks. The author lived with these people and you'll see in his picture the love he has for this region. He knows how to tell a story and how to make the picture to encounter the beauty of it.

The movie CARAVAN tells the same story but then the pictures move (haha) As you can read I'm not used to write in English, but my message is this one ... buy it and go see the picture, you won't be disapointed !

Shiv Visvanathan is a brilliant writer and an original thinker. His interpretation of science is essentially a humanist one. He argues for a science that rooted in concerns of all that is human, a science of play not of war,a non-vivisectionist science. The article on Vavilov is tribute to all great scientists who saw in science a liberatory role. A must read for all those interested in science of the third world. Especially for scientists and engineers- from rich and poor countries alike. This book will open some eyes.

An exhaustive guide to Colombia's cuisine
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-15
This book is the only guide you need for great Colombian cooking. Written for a somewhat experienced cook, the book assumes you know the basics, and need ingredients and preparation methods. It is heavily weighted toward recipes from Colombia's northern coast, but includes sections on cuisine from other parts of the country, and international fare. Written by Teresita Román de Zurek, a well-respected Colombian author, it will guide you through all the steps needed to produce authentic, delicious Colombian dishes.

Taped Music Revolutionizes Indian Music Industry
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-26
If you are not interested in exploring the details of the music biz in India, turn off this site right now; this book is not connected to the Western pop scene. CASSETTE CULTURE is a study of the impact of cassette technology on popular music in North India. It explores the nature of the changes the arrival of widely-available cassettes has made on the structure of the Indian music industry and on popular music itself. I found it a well-written book with an absolute minimum of scholarly jargon, though it is an academic book. The author does not presume knowledge on the part of the reader and gives careful explanations of Indian musical styles, regional cultures, and music industry details. I found the balance between theory and description excellent. There is an interesting discussion of the popular music recording scene in other parts of the world, as well as a thorough historical look at that topic in India itself. The problem of piracy is dealt with in depth. There are three basic issues that underlie Manuel's study. First, the nature of control of the mass media in India. Second, the content of the mass media and how it is presented. And third, the effect of the content on the audience and how they use that content. With these guidelines, he shows how the arrival of cassette technology and cheap cassette players in the 1970s created a revolution in Indian popular music. By the 1980s, a transformation was underway, with the rise of hundreds of small regional producers, as well as a few giants. Escape from corporate control might lead us to think that the cassette ?revolution? was a liberating force, but Manuel points out that this is not entirely so. The new technology has also been used to spread traditional, unprogressive, and even reactionary, bigoted messages through India. Cassettes have fuelled many a regionalist or separatist movement as well as the strivings of many an opportunistic politician.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about the combination of music, popular media, technology and culture in India, one of the great civilizations of mankind, which seldom appears in Western media except for disasters, murders, or horror stories . Manuel has written a classic. Buy it.
