I play D line at BSU and this book incoporated and explained a lot of the drills we did when I was playing. It also gave me ideas for new drills. I recommend this book to D line coaches.

This is a very detailed account of the various coverages any defensive backs coach, or defensive coordinator should know. The author goes into great depth detailing each assignment for a number of combinations of Covers 2, 3, 4, and Man Coverage. Great care is also given to detailing various situations that arise from Goal Line to a flexible Cover 3 that can be used when a team throws a totally unexpected formation at you. I would highly recommend this book as a classic. Possibly THE classic in this area. My only caveat is that it IS a classic. This book was written in 1984, before the modern explosion in pass formations, and the variations we call the West Coast and/or Run and Shoot Offenses. I only wish he would update this book and talk about some of the new developments in it.

Coach Mark Aubrey Schuster has written a great book on the Defensive Secondary. It is full of diagrams and the reading is easy to follow.

It has a great chapter on goal line defense. And it has numerous chapters on defensive coverages.

I recommend this book be used by high school coaches and above.

As a field player who never played goalkeepr I was intimidated a the prospect of coaching this position. This book provided all the information I needed. The information was easy to understand, precise and invaluable and has helped me develop my goalkeepers to their maximum potential. I think it's the only goalkeeper coaching book I'll ever need to use. There is also a companion set of video tapes "Keeper" which are also excellent and I highly recommend them.

This is a must read for those just starting or for those who have coached and need some new ideas. This book is very well laid out from start to finish. I read the entire 317 page book in less than two days (I could barely put it down to take a break). This book gets the reader to start being creative with their own established offense yet would allow the beginning coach to create an easy to implement (and understand) offensive package.

The offense can be run from any formation and discusses any changes to be made versus the numerous defenses out there. The blocking rules and line calls are simple (you do not need to use them all).

The passing game allows for maximum protection to shotgun with 5 receivers, and also includes the play-action game. The pass routes are diagramed versus cover 2, 3, and man out of the 4-3, 4-4, 5-2, and 5-3 defenses.

The author uses five base running plays, a quick passing game, and utilizes the draws and screens effectively.

The book also covers daily practice plans (with examples), and weekly game plans. The connection is made from day one of practice through to game one play number one.

A great book!

Outstanding Compilation of Offenses
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-28
I really like this book. It is a compilation of presentations from 20 of the country's best college coaches of how to run their base offense. Each coach tells not only how to run the offense, but why. There is a significant amount of detail in the 10 pages or so each coach has from splits, to handling 3 and 5 technique defenders, to blocking assignments. Some even explain how much time they allot in practice to various techniques and what key concepts they need the players to learn. For example, on page 56, there is a paragraph that explains what the tight end does on his first and second steps.

The book is not as dry as it may sound. These are presentations that have been transcribed and most coaches start and/or end with a story or tell about something meaningful to them.
