The Best Book About Reader's Digest -- Ever.

Peter Canning succinctly tells the history of The Reader's Digest, from its humble beginnings to the story of the mighty direct mail machine it became. The style is clear and concise (as matches the subject), and his careful and comprehensive research is clearly evident throughout. After the salacious nonsense by John Heidenry, (Theirs Was The Kingdom -- 1993) it's refreshing to see how an insider deals with the subject.

This is undoubtedly one of the best books ever written about the building of a truly American business empire, (The Reader's Digest Association) and how that empire affected the lives of its founders, Dewitt and Lila Wallace. The author poignantly details how the founders, who were undoubtedly handson managers of the Digest for most of their lives, became prisoners of their empire, and how those who inherited the reigns of the Digest abused that powerand abandoned the original goals the Wallaces developed for it.

antidote to corporate literature

Review Date: 2007-05-01
This is an absolutely essential guide to anyone interested in alternative press publications, especially ones with a political or cultural bent. Where books like Writer's Market and their associated writing magazines do a pretty good job rounding up all the mainstream culture magazines in North America, their sections on publications like these are usually on the slim side, and would suggest that there are now more plumbing magazines in the U.S. than left wing political publications.
A quick flip through these pages, though, reveals that the independent publisher is still alive and well in North America and the world beyond. There are listings for modern Marxist publications, alternative education and parenting journals, controversial history publications, radical environmental journals, and lots of "watchdog" publications created for the sole purpose of keeping an eye on local and worldwide political figures and military installations. Really, it's a great comfort to know that while the independent press isn't as widespread and strong as it was in the 1970s and 1980s, it is still out there, making its presence felt.

More than just being a simple roundup of various publications, though, this book is reading material in itself. So much detail is packed into each page regarding each journal that one finds themselves reaching for the ol' checkbook to begin lifelong subscriptions to certain publications--which is about the only way to get many of these magazines, since they're not carried by any of the distributors that work with the usual suspect chain bookstores. Publication focus, issue summaries and themes, and even quality of writing is discussed in these lengthy reviews--and, for those out there who cruise books like this looking for work, editorial contact information, Web sites, and email addresses are included with each summary. There's also a lengthy section on which publications sell ad space and at what cost, readership numbers, and which magazines publish product reviews (music, books, etc.). There's even an alphabetical roundup of notable columnists and contributors from some of the bigger cultural and political magazines, and where their work appears.

A necessary, well-conceived antidote to media monopoly

This directory does a terrific job exploring and exposing the diverse choices that exist outside of the mainstream magazine and newspaper world. The book seems to have been designed to appeal to a number of serious "professional" researchers -- librarians, booksellers, editors, writers, activists, even philanthropists. At the same time, its simple and elegant design makes Annotations an enjoyable, accessible way to learn about new independent voices. Sadly, it's one of the few resources the public can turn to for non-corporate opinion. But that just makes it all the more valuable....

This is a wonderful book with beautiful illustrations. My son, age 10, especially liked learning about the National Parks, while my daughter, age 7, wants to use the paintings as models for her own drawings. The text, which is attractively designed for more than one reading level, is nicely balanced with information about both the featured animals and the parks where they can be found. While it provides a satisfying read, the book also raises interest in learning more. I now want to visit the National Parks I haven't yet been to. There is a map showing the locations of the featured parks at the back as well as contact information for the parks and other organizations.

I am a Kindergarten teacher and collect many alphabet books. I am always on the look out for books that not only teach letters but other curriculum content as well. This book has an abundance of scientific information about various animals that are native to North America. It also has a map of the parks which helps children learn about the difference in climate with in our country. The text is laid out so that a portion of the information can be easily shared with younger kids or more detailed information can be shared with older kids. This book is a great resource.

Where has this book been for the last 10 years? as a teacher of AP Latin Lit. this book is top-notch. It pulls everything together succintly and saves the teacher an inordinate amount of time on dealing with peripheral matters. The grammar summaries are excellent and to the point the explanations of the figures of speech and rhetorical devicescoupled with the plentiful examples give the student an exact idea of what is to be exspected.
Above all I particularly liked the numerous sample questions, both in the M/C and Free Response sections. These helped as a model for creating my own questions.
I hope that when Latin Lit. ends in 2009 there is a follow up edition for the new AP Latin Syllabus.

Thank You Mr. Palma

This was a great book to help review for the exam. It has tips on all the sections and also has an extensive grammer review in the back. I only got it a few weeks before the test but I would recommend to anyone buying it that they buy it earlier if possible so that they can work through everything. Even buying it late it helped.

This book deals with many things such as humanity and class but the main thing it deals with is the struuggle for women and how they gain and lose power by their sexuality. Offred has power over the Commander and his wife because she is fertile but her fate lies in their hands so they also have power over her. I really enjoyed this book it was mind boogleing to think that these situations can and do occur in society

I have about 30 books of literary criticism on the works of Jane Austen.I wish this had been the first, because it explains so much of what the other critics say in ways that I, as a high- school graduate, can understand.

an invaluable tool for scholars and common readers

As a faithful and long standing admirer of Jane Austen's works, I have many books in my library dedicated to the study, the examination and the pure enjoyment of the works of the great English author. None is more appreciated and often consulted than "Approaches to Teaching Austen's Pride and Prejudice".

Prof. Folsom has compiled a rare gem: a book that satisfies the needs of the scholars and awakens the interest of the less knowledgeable reader. The reader is offered sixteen essays touching upon Social History, Austen's unpublished writing and reading, the structure and theme of the book and the language.

Through clear prose, the essays contribute fresh insights or reinforce well known information, often displaying a sparkle of the same kind of wit which has made the Author so beloved.

Every time I read part of this book, or its entirety, I find myself with a great urge to pick up once again Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice". I cannot think of a better testimonial to the validity of the work.

This is a splendid book, originally published by the Tennessee Historical Society, and sold at the Tennessee State Museum. Photographs and descriptions are excellent, as are the examples. The book is not engaged in "price guessing" and the like. Rather, it is designed for the person who is familiar with the construction of period furniture and who is cognizant of the terminology. It is highly recommended for collectors, dealers and anyone else interested in ways and furnishings of the past.

We use this book at late-night parties -- reading sections out loud brings raucous laughter and sometimes prolonged discussion. One game is to substitute certain words -- for example, everytime the book uses the word "kissing" in its advice to teenagers about the perils of getting too forward on the first date, you choose some other word, some other activity, and say that word instead. What a gas!

this is the funniest book I have ever read. My favorite chapter is called Expressing Affection. I think it is hilarious that people might have followed this strictly at one time. No offense to those who did. It is just funny in this day and time and sometimes i wish boys still acted this way.
