Anyone who works in the Library and Information field need to get this book. This resource will save you alot of mental and financial problems as well as stress. The author does not make the assumption that the reader knows the subject area. This resource is written so that a layperson can understand it. After every chapter there are references that one can peruse if he/she so desires. The appendix is wonderful. The table of contents is methodical and logical. It is a great reference resource and a good read!!

The First Amendment is an integral philosophical and political concept embedded in academic and community library system operations. The First Amendment And Cyberspace answers the questions librarians and library patrons most often have about the First Amendment and library services. Included the issues of basic First Amendment principles and their application to libraries, the right to offend, religious motivations and library use, library confidentiality laws, cyberspace and the First Amendment. A special chapter focuses on children, schools and the First Amendment. Essential reading for library students, librarians, library administrators, and library board members, Robert Peck's The First Amendment And Cyberspace is enhanced with appendices on American Library Association policies and recommendations including Conducting a Challenge Hearing; Guidelines and Considerations for Developing a Public Library Internet Use Policy; and Policy on Confidentiality of Library Records.

A thoughtfully written and extensively researched account

The collaborative effort of Mary Minow (President of the California Association of Library Trustees and Commissioners) and Tomas A. Lipinski (Assistant Professor and Co-Director of the Center for Information Policy Research, University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee's School of Information Studies), The Library's Legal Answer Book is a thoughtful and authoritative survey and analysis of the intersection of legal matters and library business. Ranging from adapting digital library resources to serve patients with disabilities, to issues of privacy and library records, to issues pertaining to library employment, The Library's Legal Answer Book is a thoughtfully written and extensively researched account, expertly created to give the reader a good grounding in background information about libraries and the law. No private, corporate, academic, or community library system should be without recourse to a copy of The Library's Legal Answer Book.

Clear, concise, essential

Minow and Lipinski have crafted a guide for librarians who need guidance in what might seem to be a hopeless quagmire of potential legal entangelements. Its organization is clear, and an excellent index provides good access to its contents. Most important, perhaps, is the clear and unintimidating style of the writing.
Some sections transcend the "library" in the title, and would be useful for anyone a) designing a website; b) working to provide access to resources for people with disabilities; or c) employing staff. Journalists covering library issues will find it to be a useful reference as well.

Ms. Minow and Mr. Lipinski have written a very thorough, extremely readable volume on a tough topic--libraries and the law. In these times, both patrons and those active in the library world need to know the information in this book.
Written in an engaging question and answer format, the book is like reading newspaper questions to the editor with responses!
All of us fit in the patron and/or library world categories (right?) and, therefore, I highly recommend this book to everyone. As a person who falls into both categories, I learned a lot--and, with no pain! Five stars.

I read this book when it first came out some time ago and wrote a very strong recommendation for the book for the publisher to use. It's an excellent book. It's well written, flowing, and well targeted at the issues that affect couples moving into the second half of life together. If you are moving into that time of life or know someone who is, I highly recommend this book.

The Arps must have been secretly watching our home when they wrote this book. Their comments on the changes in relationships and priorities were right on the mark. My wife and I have applied several of their "challenges" and the positive difference has been very noticeable. I enjoyed the book so much, it's become the background for a popular class I teach to "empty nesters" in our church.

If your "nest" is empty now, or will be in the near future, you owe it to yourself and your marriage to read "The Second Half of Marriage". I doubt there is a better book on the subject available today.

This is a well written, informative book on the biblical view of what a marriage can be if the couple is willing to work together to benefit the other. I found it challenging me to be a better spouse and to learn to live the companionship marriage. I would recommend this book to every couple who wants to enjoy their later years together.

I had never heard of this book and have followed Edgar Cayce and the ARE for 30 years. I just found a used copy of the original version, "Many Happy Returns" on Amazon.com, ordered it, and read it in record time. It is a fabulous book!! I have been exposed to most of the information in some form or another but never had Cayce's lives put in chronological order with explanations and overlapping karmic implications and indications. W. A. Church is a wonderful writer and I couldn't put the book down.
If you get this book for your personal library it will be on of your favorites!

Required Reading For All Followers Of The Law Of One

Review Date: 2003-05-27
Any fan of Edgar Cayce and his psychic readings will want to read this book which describes events that occurred in the more significant incarnations of this very unusual individual.

The value of this book is not only the descriptions of each of Cayce's past life separately but also how his past lives affected his later incarnations.

Many examples are provided of how choices (both positive and negative) made in one life caused effects in a future life. This is called the law of kharma.

I doubt if there's any other source of information available that can provide this type of insight into the process of reincarnation. For most of us this type of information remains mainly at the subconscious level while we travel through our earthly lives.

This is one of Edgar Cayce's greatest legacies.

There's also a tremendous amount of other information besides Cayce's experiences in this earthly realm. Cayce interacted with incarnations of the Christ spirit in some of his past lives as well as with Abraham in the bible and other famous historical figures.

The sceptic will find it hard to believe that one person would have had experiences involving so many significant historical events and so many historical figures. However the reason for this is that Cayce himself is an historical figure and he is a very spiritually oriented person. Often when people like this are reincarnated they reach a level of fame and recognition and they share experiences with similar types of souls.

Not all of Cayce's past life experiences were positive by the way. He was the one who got tricked into letting the Greeks bring the Trojan horse into Troy and then he committed suicide. He hit rock bottom during his two incarnations as the soldier of fortune John Bainbridge, going so far as to use his psychic powers to make money gambling.

At times the Edgar Cayce soul entity had problems in two areas which are problematic for many people; sexuality and a feeling of racial superiority. As the law of kharma says must happen he experienced the negative effects of these things himself in the most heart breaking and brutal ways. Unfortunately the mistakes we make often affect not only ourselves but those we are closest to.

The author indicates that Cayce gave specific dates for the second coming of Christ and Cayce's next incarnation. The year for both of these events is given as 1998.

Since this year has already passed the questions are:

1) have these things happened but we don't realize it yet ?

2) did Cayce really say '98 (as he sometimes did) and mean for example some other year ending in '98' such as 2098 or even 3098 ? (this seems doubtful because the author is an expert on the Cayce readings.)

3) did Cayce really mean 1998 but some other misunderstandings occurred when the readings were recorded or interpreted ?

4) was Cayce wrong about the year for these events ? since he was right very often this is an interersting question.

I don't know the answers to these questions. I did order a book entitled 'Edgar Cayce In Context' which may help with putting Cayce's psychic prophecies into perspective. I haven't received or read this book yet.

I first noticed this book on the shelves of my local ABC (Adventist Book Centre)store. Since I love animals, I decided to pick it up. After reading the back I was a little worried because it was written long before my time. I am glad that I picked it up, and am eager to read the others (there are 12 vol. in the Living Forest Serries). Sam Cambell's style of writing puts you right in the heart of the story. I was actually sad when the book was finished. It is amazing the way he describes the surrondings and best of all the actions of the animals. He is a true animal lover. Highly recomended for all ages, young and old!

I read and reread Sam Campbell's books when I was a kid. It didn't hurt my imaginings that my name is also Giny. These books keep me in stitches and I appreciate that there is no dumbing down, yet they can be read by kids. Its a great way to push the envelope on developing readers' vocabulary and comprehension skills and even better for reading to kids who think they might be outgrowing such a thing but could use a little subtle help with the book. I love Sam Campbell and his books. My greatest fear is that I will research his legacy and find that the Sanctuary is now a strip mall.

Great clean book for young and old.

This book is written by a parent and grandparent of a childhood cancer survivor and has many quotations from other parents whose children have or had cancer. They've been there...they know what you are going through. Bulleted lists of quick tips and tricks are extremely helpful for busy parents who have little time for reading while in the throes of treatment. For those times when a parent finds they have too much time on their hands, like during admissions and while waiting umpteen hours in hospital waiting rooms, the book reads easily and is full of practical coping advice and resources. I only wish that this book had been available when my son was on treatment!

Excellent book for parents of children with cancer.

I highly recommend this book for parents of children with cancer. It provides precisely what the title promises: 'A practical guide to help families cope.' Unfortunately, this book was not available until my son was off-treatment for cancer; today, turning the pages of the book , I find the reading comforting, cozy . . . kind of like sitting down and talking with a good friend. The authors know what I felt during those first stressful years of treatment, and if I had had the book then, I would have felt both comforted and armed with methods to deal with the psychological turmoil that comes with hearing those words "your child has cancer". Woznick and Goodheart include useful chapters on relieving pain and side effects, encouraging child development during treatment, and building self-esteem in your child, as well as a chapter on dying and grieving. The book also has an excellent resource section, forty-four pages of annotated listings of helpful organizations, support groups, web sites, books, and videos.

Dr. Maruna shines the bright lights of objectivity, intellectual courage, and scientific inquiry, into a dimly understood subject, one which too many people would rather ignore: Specifically, why is criminal recidivism so commonplace, what are the social policies and practices that discourage rehabilitation, what beliefs about criminal behavior do we need to re-examine, how do some offenders manage to reconstruct their lives in spite of all the barriers, and what should we be learning from them. He doesn't preach, he doesn't harangue, he just presents the facts in a convincing and very readable manner, and enlivens the text with a variety of case histories and interviews. Sure to be appreciated by the general public as well as behavioral scientists and correctional experts, "Making Good..." is destined to be a classic in its field.

Winner of a 2001 American Society of Criminology Award for Most Outstanding Contribution To Criminology, this meticulously researched book describes the process through which hard-core criminal recidivists desist from crime to lead productive lives.

As the pendulum begins to turn from a crazed rush to incarcerate, there is more and more interest in the topic of prisoner re-entry. What can help criminals turn their lives around and become productive citizens? This book is a great starting point for answering this complex question.

It has also been a learning experience for my life (a desisting one). `Shadd Maruna has written a classic in my library. Looking forward to any follow-ups!

If you read this Dr. Maruna, thank you for your book. It will help me when I get out of college.

Along with this I currently just picked up "Inside Rikers" by Jen Wynn (sp?). For all others interested in other titles.

This is such an inspirational book, and a must for any aspiring cinematographer and those with a real interest in cinema. It covers the history of Europeon cinematography and is wonderfully illustrated. At the beginning there are pieces from Jack Cardiff, Sven Nykvist, Guiseppe Rotunno and Bernardo Bertolucci.
One of the things I liked best about this book are the pieces on the 100 different top rated films. For each film we are given the story and this is told with the emphasis on how the film was shot, how light was used and how effects were created. It outlines each cinematographers approach. It made me want to watch all 100 of these films.
At the end there is a large section on 'Tools of the Trade' describing many different camera systems, lighting and filters and the history of many great camera companies, among others Panavision, Auri, Kodak, Fuji and Aaton. This is a truly fascinating book. Christie Barraclough

Sometimes it is better to freeze everything around us, and take the time one wants to admire a beautiful composition, or lighting or an unforgettable face. This is what I found in this book. As if it wasn't enough, it has the most interesting information about the cinematographers who achieved all this in the most sublime stage of cinematic art. If you want a great bird's eye view of Yosemite Valley to orient yourself to the location or if you plan to hike around the Valley -- you want this map. It's plain, simple, to the point and gives you an up front idea of what the terrain is like in an oblique topographic view -- almost three-demensional.

The other side of the map is filled with information about hikes and scenic wonders of Yosemite Valley. I'm sure Ansel Adams would have approved of this one for getting around the place! Fabulous supplement to the NPS guide.

And if you want a broader view of Yosemite NP, National Geographic has a fabilous fold out map.

It gives you an up close view of Yosemite Valley mapped. No more squinting and turning your Yosemite park map every which way just to get a bird's eye view of the valley trails. Major trails are listed along with their milage. It even gives an adequate view of how the trails bend and curve, so you have a rough idea what to expect while out on your valley hikes. Included in the map is historical captions about some of the landmarks along with blk/wht and color photo snippets. There is even a basic park phone directory and a time line of historical events. This is a great magnified map made from a thick durable paper and easy to handle because of its smaller size, NO map folding FUSS! That's an A+ in itself. Just an overall great map to take along on your hikes.

This large-scale, easy-to-read map of Yosemite Valley and surrounding areas is a must-have for anyone visiting Yosemite National Park, especially if you are a hiker. Instead of a straight down view, as is done in most maps, you see the valley from an oblique perspective, from south of the valley, with the mountains shown as they would look in 3-Dimensions - a very pleasing effect. All trails are shown, of course, but also bicycle paths, shuttle bus stops, campgrounds, picnic areas, restrooms, parking areas, etc.

But this is only the beginning! Each trail also has its own description, including approximate time to complete, distance, elevation gain, and trailhead location. Another really nice feature is that many "Vista Points" are included, which are shown on the map, including which direction to look, and are described in their own section, complete with a color photo. Several other parts of the park are also descibed, with photos. There are also detailed write-ups concerning Yosemite's history and geology, plus info on tourist facilities at Yosemite Village. And last, but not least, lots of Natural History information, including photos and drawings to aid in identification of mammals, birds, wildflowers and trees found in the area.

Writing as one who has been a cartographer for more than twenty years, and also as an avid hiker, I wish that I had the opportunity to produce something like this myself!
