My grandfather died of cancer in 1992, so at age 16 today, I was deprived of ever actually coming to know him. This book has given me an idea of the kind of man he was. My uncle, Keith Miller, independently had the book published and through this experience he has recieved a lot of feedback from the book.

All say the same thing - it's not a phony. It's an honest, true to life depiction of the Korean War.

Written over 40 years ago when he had just returned from Korea, but tucked away due to the bad climate toward the military during the Vietnam War and afterward, the book is literally a time capsule of the era.

To honor my grandfather and help my uncle, I created an official website for the book at http://www.koreassleepingghosts.com

It includes an entire chapter preview of the book, all the pictures, press releases and reviews, and more.

I'm so glad my grandfather wrote this book for us and that my uncle has spent the long, hard work for getting this book published.

One of the most realistic war books I've read

I fought in Korea in 52-53. Though I was younger than the author of this book, many of the feelings he expresses in Korea's Sleeping Ghosts were almost exactly the same as the ones I had. The book does good at telling how a soldier goes from not wanting to be there and doing everything he can to get posted to the "rear", to getting so caught up in fighting for the survival of yourself and your buddies that you forget all that. Some of the hijinks in the book had me laughing so hard, I was almost in tears...god it brought back memories! It did a grand job of explaining how you go from hair brain screwing around one minute to hair raising battle the next. I don't think I knew any of the guys in the book because I wasn't stationed near Heartbreak, but I swear they're spittin images of some of the fellows I hung out with!

The fighting scenes brought back some bad memories, and the last few pages of the book are hard to take, but that's the way it goes. There's a romance between the main character and a nurse, something that probably happened to 10,000 guys over there, but those things never seemed to work out. The thing I like most about the book is that you can just tell it was written by a guy who was there; the terminology, the situations, the behavior of commanders, and the thoughts of the guys during battle aren't phony like so much of that Hollywood stuff.

I only got one complaint about the book: there aren't enough pictures. There are 15 or so in the middle, but as a fellow who was there, I'd liked to see a lot more. Lt. Miller, the soldier who wrote the book, looked that things a lot like I did...I wish I could have met him. But I'm glad he's telling people what we did over there cause a lot of folks don't know or forgot.

Korea's Sleeping Ghosts: A True Story Of Heartache, Humor, And Heroism offers the autobiographical experiences of author Lee H. Miller's struggle in the Korean War which saw a young American lieutenant sent to a far off land, endure front line combat hardships and horrors, form enduring battlefield friendships of some 40 years ago. From the bloody days of near overwhelming combat endured in a civil war that was to claim more than four million lives (including 36,000 Americans) Korea's Sleeping Ghosts is evocative, memorable, introspective, enduring, and a highly recommended addition to personal, academic, and community library 20th Century Military Biography collections and reading lists.

I just got a copy of Koreas Sleeping Ghosts, and I guess you can say I was moved by it. My brother fought with the Marines in Korea in 1951, but he died about 20 years ago...I wish he was here to read this book because it's so much like some of the stories he told, even though this book is by an Army guy.

The book tells a lot about the sort of stuff that goes on that you usually don't always see in the movies or read about. The big surprise to me is how funny some parts of the book are..some of the dialogue is a rip! The backcover of the book says the book was written more than 40 years ago but only discovered recently. I don't know if that's true or not, but it does seem to have a close-to-the-war realism. The ending is a bit tough to take, but that's all part of war I guess.

It's also got some pictures in it that I think were taken by the author, and a lot of them are of the people and places in the book. I can't speak from experience, but I think if you're a veteran of any war, you'll like this book. I know my brother would have. It will probably bring back some memories, and not all bad ones either. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I appreciate Suzanne Starling for showing what Warren Angus Ferris did for Dallas, as well as showing what an interesting career and life he had. James Monroe Ferris was my great grand-father, who handed down the chain used to survey Dallas to my grandfather, Edward Eugene Ferris. He handed it down to my father, Raymond Edward Ferris. My father still has the chain and I wish a picture could have been included in the book. My father also has a gold watch which Warren Angus gave to his second wife. There are a couple of minor mistakes, such as James Monroe Ferris having been a United States Marshall for Greer County, TX (now Oklahoma) the entire time and not a Sherrif's Deputy. But, without a doubt this book is an accurate account of a complex, hightly intelligent man and his frontier life.

An exceptional accounting of the life and times of WAF.

I was most gratified to learn (quite by accident) that a book about WAF had been written. WAF was my great-grandfather, his son, Henry Ferris, was my grandfather, and my father was Carl Dallas Ferris. One error in the book referred to my grandfather as childless, when, in fact he had two sons and two daughters, & was living in Spur, Texas, where he died & is buried. (Most family records show he was living in Wink, Tx. at his death.)I don't consider this a major fault, as much of the rest of the book was as I had read and heard. I am sure most historical writings contain errors, if we but knew the inside story. My father was a great storyteller, & he used to entertain us for hours with stories of WAF which he had heard from his father and Aunt Kate. Warts and all, I am just glad that after all this time, Warren Angus Ferris is getting some of the recognition he so richly deserved. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the early days, regardless. Miss Starling did a very good job with old clippings and letters. Bravo! Janelle Ferris Berry

The author contributes much to the history of the west, Texas, and, more particularly, Dallas County. The early adventures of WAF in the Rockies, which taught him lessons in survival, fortified his spirit to, not only survey the land, but to choose it on which to build a family. The author makes much of the Lovejoy connection to WAF, which is interesting, but negilected WAF's immediate family except for bits and pieces. They became settlers of the land. Of his son's family (James Monroe "Jim" Ferris), few if any knew of the publication of this book. It was discovered, quite by accident, on the internet and copies sent to several of Ferris' decendants. Pictures of the demolished headstones at the Dallas cemetary, of Lucy Mae Pounds Smith working in the cemetary to clean it up, of the children of Jim Ferris--could have been included. But, once again in history, the true settlers of the west are ignored as the author focuses on the Lovejoy decendants and their "coat-tail" claim to fame of a half-brother who they turned their back on, time and time again. If you have not read, "Life in the Rocky Mountains" and are interested in what life was like in the 1800's, more especially life in the mountains, I would suggest that you do so. Although the three editions which were published are out of print, they can be found. WAF was a very well-read and even witty young man who wrote of where he was and what he saw, and he was many places and saw many things. "Land is the Cry" is a continuation of the WAF saga. And after reading about some of the treatment from his own family, no wonder he decided to "go west." Poor at death, he will live on in the hearts of his Texas and Oklahoma decendants. As for Dallas, like Bud Ferris said regarding the plaque at the cemetary, "Too little, too late."

Although we grew up hundreds of miles apart, in a different time and place, Worthington makes me put my own family under a microscope and remember everything. She finds the truth in the everyday, and makes it extraordinary like few writers can do. This is something I will share with everyone I know.

A lovely collection of poems distinctly American

Review Date: 2006-09-12
With aching tenderness and an impressive mastery of lyrical language, Worthington digs through the scraps of her memory to piece together something warm and comforting to protect her from the underlying knowledge she has of the transitory nature of all things.

Just as in the gardens, fields, and woods mentioned so often in her poems, she remembers seasons of bloom and seasons of decay.

In spite of the darkness present in some of these poems, many of the artifacts of her American childhood are retrieved from the attic and baement of her past to be spread in sunlight, like objects in a yard-sale, upon the green lawn of her imagination. The old and ancient are thus renewed. Brought into the present they are seen as evocative and interesting.

The poems in this volume ask us to consider our own lives, our family's lives, and our own sense of values.

Though an awareness of death (and perhaps a deep fear of it) drives these poems. In the end, it is the poet's acceptance of such things as part of the natural order that redeems them.

Marianne Worthington is an accomplished poet who uses skillful restraint when dealing with intensely emotional moments. In spite of the down-home atmosphere that showcases these poems. They are definitely not sentimental or cliche. They are strong in both message and craft.

Perhaps, the best thing about this slim volume is its brilliant simplicity. Worthington is a mature poet with enough distance and wisdom to present things just as they are.

"Larger Bodies Than Mine" is a memorable first book written by a poet who will make you eager to hear what else she has to say.

A Wonderful Collection

This is a beautifully produced chapbook full of beautiful poems. Every single poem is popping with the lyrical nature of everyday life, but Worthington transcends "real life" with her perfectly chosen words. These are important pieces about family, mostly, but also about the joys and struggles that join us all. This is a must for any true poetry collection.

Few books offer so many practical rewards for lawyers (indeed for anyone who uses Acrobat). Cleanly written and full of screenshots to aid you, this is a one stop shop for "everything Acrobat" a lawyer could possibly want to know. David Masters is renowned as a lawyer/expert who speaks nationwide about the use of Adobe Acrobat in law firms. If you get the chance to hear him speak, you'll thoroughly enjoy him in person, but the book is a reference tool that you'll go back to time and again. Most lawyers who read this book are shocked by the many things that Acrobat can do - and they practice better, more efficiently and more securely as a result. This book should be in every lawyer's library.

Tells You Just What You Need to Know

More and more courts are allowing, if not requiring, that documents of all type be presented in electronic format either in addition to or in some cases instead of on paper. There are unquestionably a lot of lawyers who will assign the task of producing the electronic document to a secretary. But this is kind of like having a lawyer these days who can't use a PC - there probably are some, but they are getting fewer and fewer.

This slim document, now in its second edition is aimed to enable lawyers (or their secretaries) to produce the .pdf documents desired by the court. It does not go into all the details of what Adobe Acrobat can do, that would take a thousand pages or so. It is not a book intended for the teckie who lives, breathes, and eats computers. It tells the lawyer what he needs to know to meet the courts requirements. At this it does a great job.

I really needed this book! It focuses on the functions of Adobe Acrobat 6 that lawyers need to use. Explanations are clear, illustrations are helpful.

These are skills that a lawyer could choose to "leave to the support staff." The lawyers who do that are also the ones who can be productive and profitable practitioners in the 21st Century without touching a computer keyboard. (I assume there are a few of them somewhere.)

The rest of us need to know how to create, manipulate and use documents in the PDF format. This book tells us how. Those who are experienced Acrobat users may not need it, but I am not and this book really gets right down to the things I need to know to use Acrobat in my work.

Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2005-08-18
"Legal Construction of Identity: The Judicial and Social Legacy of American Colonialism in Puerto Rico" by Efren Rivera Ramos is a fascinating book on the legal and historical analysis on the colonization of Puerto Rico.

This book is not for the casual reader on the topic of Puerto Rico. However, the book provides a wealth of knowledge for those interested in the colonization of Puerto Rico and its effects on its political, economical, and cultural identity. How the American colonization of Puerto Rico has affected the relationship between them ? a bond that has remained fragile from its very beginning is well depicted by the author. Ramos writes of the United States ideology of expansionism that was so prominent during the nineteenth and the twentieth century. As a professor of law, he examines how the American judicial system was utilized in the creation of colonial Puerto Rico and the subjection of its people.

Ramos examines the Foraker Act of 1900; the Jones Act of 1917; and the Insular Cases, whereby the Supreme Court of the United States instituted the framework for applying the US Constitution to the Philippines, Cuba, Guam, and Puerto Rico. The topic of American citizenship imposed on Puerto Ricans in 1917 is covered in detail along with both positive and negative consequences of that action. The struggles that Puerto Rico confronted after American colonization and the difficulties it continues to face today in maintaining its cultural identity are well emphasized by Ramos.

"Legal Construction of Identity: The Judicial and Social Legacy of American Colonialism in Puerto Rico" is an intensely written and convincing book. A worthy and welcome blend of judicial, political, and social history. It is intelligently researched and written - it's an eye-opening piece of work that entices the reader to think about the phrase "truth, justice and the American way". This book deserves its place on the shelves of the best of Puerto Rican historical literature.

In this unique book, David Attenborough has undertaken a history of nature, from one-celled organisms in the primeval slime more than 3000 million years ago to modern day's humans. The book presents a chronological account of the life on planet Earth over a period of 3,500 million years. Life on Earth is an astonishing array of characters drawn from the whole range of living animals the world over. Attenborough takes the reader around the world with him into jungles, deserts and remote mountains. The book's 13 chapters follow the sequence of main events in the evolution of life on earth. The book details the emergence of one-celled, then multi-celled organisms; the movement of life from sea to land; adaptation to life in the air; the development of warm-blooded animals; the transition between ground life and tree life; and finally the evolution of man himself.

Professor Minan is the Tiger Woods of the literary field of golf. This terrific read is informative, entertaining, and provides great insight into the game's rules. Many of the examples used to illustrate the rules of golf are so intriguing they could only be real life occurences. Exquisitely written, this book captured my interest from beginning to end. This book is a must read for golfers and non golfers alike. A true sports classic.

Professor Minan has delivered the coup de gras for those "boors" we all have encountered on the beloved golf course. Golf is indeed a game of honor and self discipline, a virtue seemingly vanishing from the American landscape. This tome is an interesting corollary to another attorney's book, "The Death of Common Sense", by Philip K. Howard. A little common courtesy and respect in many cases is all that is needed. Professor Minan has delivered a humorous and true revelation as to the infringement on decency and respect for the game. Highly recommended.

A great read. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It answers many of the questions I always wondered about the game of golf. The book is written for a general audience, not lawyers, but will provide invaluable stories to repeat at the 19th hole. Few golfers will ever walk onto a golf course again without being reminded of the legalities of the game if they read this book.
The literary device the author uses to make this book so readable is a collection of nineteen actual legal court cases crafted into nineteen short stories presented in a style that O'Henry would have enjoyed. These cases track the 18 holes typically played in a "stipulated round" of golf, and a story for the favorite "hole 19" of all golfers. I ordered four more copies for my family of golfers. A great Christmas gift. Howard Graham

Without question this is a wonderful book that addresses many of our personal, human problems, including how to deal and cope with them. This book is not just about sleep but about living a meaningful life. If you want a quick fix or magic bullet for sleep difficulties, look elsewhere. But if you want to examine your heart, mind, and even your soul, then you will find, like I did by following the suggestions given in the book, that "Live Well, Sleep Well" is an excellent guide to a sense of peace and tranquility. It's not entirely about the number of hours we sleep, but the quality of our sleep.

Also, note that here is a book by a true writer who is more than just an "author," which is evident from the quality of the writing.

Contemporary urban life is hallmarked by chronic and habitually insufficient and inadequate sleep for millions of people. In Live Well, Sleep Well: The Holistic Way To A Good Night's Sleep, Dan Campbell addresses this epidemic health problem by surveying modern sleep research in conjunction with the information on sleep in the Edgar Cayce readings. Campbell reveals why we need sleep, what happens when sleep suffers, and how to improve sleep through a blend of modern medicine and the spiritual/health advice to be found in the Cayce readings. Practical, in-depth, meaningful, insightful, and "user friendly", Live Well, Sleep Well is very highly recommended reading for the non-specialist general reader seeking to directly address a need for an improved and more refreshing sleep.

The guide doesn't really cover all aspects if you are new to the culture and city. No real tips on staying out of trouble and the detailed city map is combersome. That aside, the book is well put together with wire spirals, the cover is a hard paper for good construction.

An A+ for AAA

Before traveling to London, we purchased many travel books, but AAA's London guide was the only one we took with us. The book is filled with beautiful color photos, great descriptions, planned itineraries, and a fantastic detailed map. We are planning on traveling to Rome this summer and AAA's Rome guide is the only travel book we will be purchasing before we go.

My wife and I used this travel guide extensively while in London. It served as our bible, tour guide, and street map. It is laid out in a very clearly and the sprial binder makes it very easy to flip to any page. It is filled with clear, color pictures and maps. The guide is broken down into various regions throughout London, with each section highlighting Must See Attractions, and then At Your Leisure sites that are also in the area. It also has a very nice reference on how to see a region in one day. An Underground map is on the inside back cover, and a regional map of London on the front inside cover. Other nice features are sections called 'Finding Your Feet' - which provides great information for when you first arrive in London (either by plane, train, boat, etc..) and a 'Practicalities' seciton that talks about currency, clothes sizes, etc.

What really made this book stand out compared to other London travel guides was it included detailed street maps of these regions. Those proved invaluable for us once we started walking around the area. The book is compact, and fit inside my coat pocket comfortably.

This is a classic book of military history and a truly rare book. If you're reading it, either you where blessed to know Father Sampson or have an obscure interest in military history of the rarest kind.

Father Sampson joined the US Army and volunteered for the paratroops as a chaplain. He was an unarmed hero more concerned with the welfare of his troops he parachuted into Normandy, France on D-Day, protected only with his devotion to God and his uncompromising faith. He was later captured at The Battle of the Bulge and spent the rest of the war in a German POW camp where he continued to serve his men.

Father Sampson would later serve in Korea and Vietnam and earned a large number of decorations for courage under fire. He even received a Purple Heart for wounds. Sampson was the right name for a man so brave and pure of heart.

I won't spoil this story for you as a reader. It's a great read about a man who was much better, much more courageous and decent a man than I.

The book reads wonderfully and is a joy to own. What can I say about it? Not only is it an inspirational story and a great history book. But honestly, it makes me want to be a better Catholic.

This book is a must-read for every American who values his freedom and who realizes that it depends on the brave sacrifices of others. When Steven Spielberg produced Saving Pvt Ryan, he unfortunately left out critical parts of this true story. It was the brave Catholic Chaplain Francis Sampson who actually did the dangerous job of Saving Pvt Ryan. Fr. Sampson was the chaplain to whom Fritz Niland went when he wanted prayer and help in going to locate the bodies of his 2 brothers who'd just been killed hours before in the Normandy invasion and he also was inform4ed of the death of his 3rd brother in Burma. The 4 brave Niland brothers--3 of whom went to Canisius College and 1 to Univ. of Buffalo in the 1930's before they entered the service along with their cousin Pete Niland--also 101st Airborne--and said brave family is acknowledged by Spielberg in the Prologue to Saving Pvt Ryan, would have made an outstanding movie of itself. But the life of Father Francis Sampson--who parachuted in 3 wars and was a POW twice in WW II and has been honored with hundreds of awards--is a hero whose outstanding life could easily alone become an outstandig movie. When you read Look Out Below! you'll get chills up your spine and tears in your eyes. What honor, bravery, love and guts! It makes me proud to be an American and a Catholic. God Bless Father Sampson, God Bless the Niland Family and God Bless America!

A must have for Airborne enthusiasts!

Saving Private Ryan was based on a short true account on page 86 of this book. Father Sampson of the 101st in Normandy is trying to help a young soldier find the cemetary his brother is in, when he is told that another brother is also dead, killed on the same day. Meanwhile, a third brother has been killed in the Pacific. Sampson gives a historical account of his life in the 101st. His tales of Normandy are especially riviting.
