The RAF Was Not Just British

In the publicity, the documentaries about the Royal Air Force, it is often overlooked that the British RAF really was composed of people from the British Empire. Australians, South Africans, New Zeelanders, Canadians and more fought along the airmen who were actually from England itself. Only lately have the contributions of these other forces to the overall effort been written about. This is the story of the Australians, approximately 10,000 pilots plus many more aircrew and support people.
4,050 Australians killed in Bomber Command. In all of the North Africa fighting against Rommel, 3,552 were killed.
This book is well illustrated with pictures, most are of aircraft, of course. But the picture on page 73 is most striking to me. It shows the seven man crew of a 460 Squadron Lancaster. Seven young men in the prime of life with a whole lifetime ahead of them. The caption says that Pilot Officer Thomas Lynch, standing at the rear of the crew was badly wounded and the only survivor when the plane was shot down.

5th edition available in the US since Jan 20th. As I am the author, I may be biased. It's Australian; but if you liked Crocodile Dundee, Muriel's Wedding, Piano, you'll love this book. Happy to discuss it with readers.

Now I know this might sound counter-intuitive, but this is one delightful cookbook which will make cooking with children enjoyable! This is a restaurant cookbook of unparalleled gorgeousness and Manfield is someone who understands the importance of the dessert on the menu. As she says, if you haven't got room for dessert then you haven't ordered your meal properly. It is not that you have to have dessert with each meal, it is that a dessert can round off a truly magnificent dinner.
I will add to that, is if you want to teach children the absolute joy of cooking, and help them to understand the importance of process and building up a lovely structured meal, these desserts will appeal. The one of the cover is particularly wonderful is Mocha Tart with with espresso ice cream cones. My children adore this recipe and love helping to make it. Believe it or not is a great afternoon activity and the outcome - while never looking quite as architectural as the one on the cover here, is still a wonder to behold. The special fun my kids have is rolling up the paper to make the cones for the ice-cream.
While I have always loved desserts, Manfield's delicious concoctions have been really inspiring, We really enjoy trying different things out depending on the seasons, and her ability to look at ingredients in a slightly different way. So instead of usual meringues, she makes towers out of them (wonderful fun again to work with kids here). I realise that people aren't necessarily going to be looking at these as some kind of pre-school or child education thing, but Manfields instructions are incredibly good and the processes are so wonderful that it is good for new and advanced cooks, but also good as a training ground to get children enjoying food
As a fan of cardonam it is lovely seeing so many recipes using it, and with peaches too, we are just coming into summer here in the southern hemisphere as I write, and peaches are starting to fall off the trees.
Christine Manfield is a great writer, here recipes are inspired - there is a good section on basic recipes, along wtih how to store them and how long they will keep) some good tips and great results. These are not recipes which take a few minutes to rustle up, but you know how long before the event you need to do things to be at their best. And as I said, it is just lovely to introduce practical 'slow' cooking in a sense to children. To teach a long process of preparation with enjoyment in an age of immediate gratification.
Loved this book - great pictures too!

Poetic fun

It is amazing that poetry has sunk so far in value to our culture that much of it has to be packaged as books for children. In this wonderfully illustrated book, some of the best poems by Nancy Willard and Jane Yolen (both established authors of adult literature), all dealing with angels, have been collected. This book is a great way to introduce children to the complexities and fun of poetry, but is also a good book for adults who appreciate fine poetry.

Part of a series developed by World Book Inc. several decades ago for young people, these books have evolved into a rich storehouse of information for anyone of any age who enjoys learning the Christmas history, music, crafts, and recipes of many nations.
Having been raised north of the Equator, I was enchanted by a summertime Christmas in Australia when a US Navy assignment took me to Hobart and Fremantle in December. This book brings back memories of that time.
One of the highlights of "Christmas in Australia" describes the wonderful tradition of Carols by Candlelight.
The book is richly illustrated with full-color photos. One of the featured carols is "O Little Babe of Bethlehem," a warm climate version of "O Little Town of Bethlehem" that describes Aussie wildlife and flowers that bloom in December.
And sweet wild clematis starry-eyed,
With delicate ferns we'll bring;
Our wattle trees shall shower their gold
In tribue to our King.
Recipes in the book include Shrimp on the Barbie, Crabmeat and Spinach Roulade, Frozen Christmas Pudding, and the traditional Pavlova, a meringue confection topped with kiwi fruit, strawberries, passion fruit pulp and whipped cream. Some of the six recipe cards feature Cream of Carrot and Honey Soup, Orange-Mint Salad, and Crown Roast of Lamb.
Collect the whole series for your home library and re-read them every December.

This book is undoubtedly the best collection of children's rhymes in the English language. If your aim is to start where the child already is, this is the book for you. For a music teacher of children, there are limitless possible applications in teaching rhythmic notation. For the classroom teacher, there are limitless possible applciations in teaching about rhyme and meter.
