Visited NY the last of August for the first time. Malachy was the tour guide on the Circle Line boat tour my son and I took around Manhattan. For everyone who thinks history is boring, you will thoroughly enjoy how he gives you a recap of the how's,when's, where's, and why's of NY. This book models the tour talk he gives while you look around at all of the history and famous sights.
It's light reading that leaves you with an education! He published this by himself so enjoy a handmade product full of his humor and unique twist on the Big Apple. Want to know where that phrase came from? This is where to look!

I ordered Malachy Murray's book after meeting him aboard the Circle Line Tour Boat on August 30th on the 4:30 pm tour. He is one of the most interesting people I have ever met. The book itself is truly unique in that it covers information and facts that a person would never know about unless they delved deeper into archives or lived the experience. Worth every penny and much, much more. My trip to NYC began on the Circle Line and will continue for months while reading and rereading "Unique New York"

We were lucky enough to get on a boat of the NY Circle Line where Malachy Murray held a microphone in his hand - and the attention of his audience as well. He made history come alive, and through his colourful comments on NYC the two hours on that boat went by without a boring minute.
This book is a fabulous way to remember this great tour of Manhattan, providing anecdotes and facts, and all of it in Malachy Murray's unique style.
Well done, Malachy :-)

This book proves the adage, "A picture is worth more than 1,000 words." Master cartoonist Brad Olsen-Ecker's clever take on the Statue of Libery kept me laughing for days. Just thinking about some of the cartoons makes it hard to contain myself. This little, hliarious book should be on the shelves at every book and souvenir shop in the Big Apple. It also makes a great, inexpensive gift. Finally, I long for the reopening of the monument...

Some of these cartoons are priceless and extremely funny. They remind me of the ones in The New Yorker with a twist, and I think the author is a little twisted. Every time I look at this book I just keep laughing. If you love lady liberty get this book. It grows on you.

This book earns a place in our "Hall of Fame." It has been read for 3 years now and memorized time and again. It inspired my [...]to memorize the New Colossus. She was Lady Liberty for Halloween for two years now. The story was very well written in a flowing, poetic, and rhythmical context. It is a great introduction to our nation's beauties, people and spirit. It is also amusing. We have a ticker tape parade every time we read this book! Thank you, Ms. Dipucchio, for giving this treasure to the world.

Newsbee, the voice of Book Buzz, an NIE project at The Washington Missourian, has chosen "Liberty's Journey" as a book pick for July. When Liberty takes a walk through bustling cities, into states with amber waves of grain, across vast deserts, she loves what she sees, but Liberty is sadly missed in New York Harbor, so it's back to work for the grand ol' girl who joyfully returns to the isle of Manhattan.
The wonders of America come to life on the pages of this wonderful picture book Book Buzz is proud to suggest.

Liberty's Journey is a moving adventure about the Statue coming to life and seeing all of the states and people she stands for. This book reminds me of the true patroitism, commitment, freedom, and generosity of our democratic America. We take it all for granted. Children can get a real glimpse of who and what our statue stands for through this beautiful story and the brilliant way it was written. The outstanding artwork shows the true Liberty, (all she needed was a personality that relates to the children as well as adults). I think that families, libraries, and schools alike would benefit by adding this work of art to their bookshelves. Liberty's Journey represents the heart of America!

The text and especially the illustrations in this book were just what I needed to explain to my kindergarten students what it would be like to visit the Statue of Liberty. The illustrator shows an aerial view of the statue on Liberty Island, the ferry needed to reach the island, and New York City in the far background. He continues with pictures showing the construction of the statue to the impressive fire works celebration on the Fourth of July. The author explains the building of the statue as well as the purpose. If you had only one book to explain the Statue of Liberty to school age children, I would recommend using "The Story of the Statue of Liberty" by Betsy Maestro and illustrated by Giulio Maestro.

I also use this book in my classroom and third graders love it. They are fascinated with the size and grandeur of the Statue of Liberty. This book tells the history of the Statue in simple text and large, vivid illustrations. (Did you know that he made it to look like his mother?) I recommend this book for 7-9 year olds. It will expand their horizons and leave them hoping that someday they will see the Statue in person.

Based on the PBS documentary, Gordon Bishop's Gateway To America is both a guidebook and a history of the New York/New Jersey triangle that was the chief entry point for America's immigration wave in the 19th and 20th centuries. Fun facts and insights into the past fill the pages of this informatively written account, one which examines The Statue of Liberty, Battery City Park, South Street Seaport, remembers the World Trade Center and commiserates with the victims of the September 11th attacks. Color photographs by Jerzy Koss enhance this enjoyable and highly recommended history and guide.

Allan Drummond brings to life the factual events of how Lady Liberty came to America, all through the eyes of a small boy. Drummond leads the reader through events leading up to and including the unveiling of the Statue of Liberty. The anticipation and enthusiasm for the coming of the Statue of Liberty that is felt in the people of New York and France is wonderfully shown in Drummond's writing. His delightful illustrations use wonderful colors to help portray this story of America's ideals of Liberty and Freedom.

Written and illustrated by Allan Drummond, Liberty! is an enthusiastic, full-color picturebook for young readers about the Statue of Liberty, which France gave to the United States in 1886. Telling its story through the eyes of a young boy, Liberty! follows the great statue's steamship voyage with imaginative pen-and-wash artwork and enthusiasm for the treasure that is Liberty. Highly recommended for both school and community library picturebook collections.

"Imagine this...New York City, October 28, 1886... A small boy stands at the foot of an enormous statue, his heart bursting with excitement, for today he has been given the most important job in the world..." Based on true events, and seen through the eyes of a little boy, Allan Drummond details the momentous day the Statue of Liberty was unveiled in New York Harbor. As the rained poured down, the harbor was teaming with ships and boats, filled with thousands of cheering people, flying French and American flags. Everyone was there, Mr Bartholdi, the sculptor, the many workers who helped build the statue in France, and erect it here in America, the sailors who brought her over from France, the press, businessmen, dignitaries, and even the President of the United States, all waiting for the signal that would reveal Lady Liberty's beautiful face for the first time..... Mr Drummond's simple text is engaging, entertaining, and full of energy, as the excitement of that day builds with each page turn. His marvelous bright and busy illustrations, in shades of red, white, and blue, dazzle as they swirl around the pages, creating a joyous feast for the eyes. Perfect for youngsters 5-9, Liberty is an evocative masterpiece, best read aloud and shared, that leaves behind a gentle and unforgettable message. "Freedom is like a flame we must all hold high and give to others and keep burning bright all around the world."

Charming, sweet, funny, and NYC is the backdrop! I'm surprised I'm the first to review this picturebook. I've often given it and/or My New York to young kids who visit me in the Manhattan. When we have older visitors (age 8 to 13), I give them a novel that I wrote, Melanie in Manhattan, which is the diary of a funny New York City eleven-year-old who becomes a tour guide in her own town. Come to NYC--and get your kids hooked on books! (...)

This is a book that all elementary school children in France and the United States should read and understand. One of our greatest national treasures is the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. A gift from the people of France, it was originally designed to be a permanent reminder that French soldiers and sailors fought alongside American patriots when the American colonies revolted against the British. Without that assistance, it is likely that the movement to independence would have failed.
Few contemporary people realize how much of a technical challenge the creation of the statue was in the late nineteenth century. At the time, it was the largest statue ever created, and it had to be constructed in parts, shipped across the Atlantic and then assembled on the island where it resides. With the value and efficiency of hindsight, it is difficult for the modern person to comprehend that many people in the United States rebelled at the thought of paying for even the base for the statue.
In many ways, the greatest national symbol of the United States is the Statue of Liberty, a shining beacon designed to represent the United States as a land of opportunity. This is a worthy book where even adults can profit from reading it.

"Liberty Street: Encounters at ground Zero" is an amazingly powerful and beautiful book. In my opinion this book takes its place with great works that bring to life a place for the reader, like Hemingway's "A Movable Feast" does Paris, and Kerouac's "On the Road" does this great country of ours. Only this book gives you an unfictionalized account of a place that in some ways has vanished forever - the community of Lower Manhattan that worked to clean up, rebuild and relocate back into their beloved neighborhood. This book is a must read, not only for its profoundly elegant and engaging writing, but for its chronicling of a very significant time and place in the history of America.

I have just read an advance review copy of this remarkable book. You're sick of all the jingoism, political exploitation and demagoguery that the disaster of 9/11 entailed. You want an intelligent and poetic account of how lives were altered in the neighborhoods around Ground Zero - how, in fact, Ground Zero itself became a "neighborhood" with a two-plus-years-long half-life. In other words, you want to read this book. If you have shared in the national malaise that settled in after the disaster, and have been further depressed by the heavy-handed bungling of the response, you want to read this book. Ground Zero became populated by remarkable men and women, and in its surrounding neighborhoods residents who wouldn't be bullied, badgered or scared away by bureaucrats or terrorists alike strove indomitably to preserve and rebuild their lives. You knew nothing about any of this until this book. No one cared - least of all the politicians who were aggrandizing the spotlight with their hand-wringing and buffoon-like pronouncements about justice and patriotism - that miracles were being performed on a daily basis by lower Manhattan residents who wouldn't be broken. Few of us were ever informed that while our attention was being deliberately diverted by a bogus war, the real American spirit was being challenged by bureaucratic indifference and stupidity, yet triumphing in the mouth of hell in lower Manhattan regardless, as genuinely as on any fraudulently engendered battlefield among the oil derricks of the Middle East. You'll encounter all of this within the pages of Peter Josyph's stunning account of the transient world of Ground Zero. I grant that no one could blame you for being sick of this whole subject, but then, before this book was written I don't think many of us really had an opportunity to comprehend what the real subject was. Moreover, Josyph's sinuous prose ripples and roils with an angry poetic music that never succumbs to partisan political banality. It will captivate you on its own terms. This book is a knockout. Don't miss it.
