BEST BOOK EVER WRITTEN ON MONEY, POWER AND POLITICS OF COLLEGE SPORTS
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.

Review Date: 2008-04-16
This book is poignant, shocking, and true.
I've read over a dozen books on the problems of college athletes and college athletics and all the hypocrisy and failed attempts to solve these problems.
What makes this book so fascinating is that it's not a dry study or philosophical discussion. This book is first-hand information. The author actually was a superlative football player at Notre Dame, who turned down an offer from the pros, and immediately entered graduate school and obtained his Ph.D.
Dr. Sack has devoted his professional life to the pursuit of the purity of amateur athleticism in college sports. You won't believe the obstacles he has encountered -- and overcome -- in becoming a true expert on the subject.
If you could own only one book about the power and politics of college athletics and how they have literally taken control over the NCAA, college presidents, athletic directors, coaches, boosters, players, and even the court system, GET THIS BOOK. You will see an old-boys' network that got started over a half century ago, and has created and nurtured a monster that is out of control -- and out of view of almost every fan in the country.
What's in this book, you will never see on ESPN or the mainstream media (sports or otherwise), who genuflect at the cash cow of college sports and refuse to upset the gravy train. If you think that entire major college sport dynasties can't come crashing down overnight -- and the wrecking crew may already be in Washington, D.C. -- GET THIS BOOK.
Bluntly, there is an incredible amount of hype and glitter to college sports. From outward appearances, it seems so strong, so vibrant, so pervasive. Closer inspection shows it's rotting from within and its influence is ruining the lives of college athletes. Dr. Sack doesn't just give you the problems, he gives you the solution, and that clarion call may be the only salvation for college athletics.

If you are interested in the consequences of performance indicators and the devastating effect of so-called bureaurocratic
"accountability" on the academic world, you should read this book. It contains a history as well as a discussion on performance
indicators and then proceeds with very detailed case studies of different countries, which read like chilling novels. Brilliantly
and superbly written.

Dr. DeCoo's book is a fascinating expose of plagiarism at all levels of academia. I am grateful that I did not read it before
embarking on a three year journey to rectify the copyright infringement of my dissertation by a Dutch team (not once, but
in six separate publications). Dr. DeCoo's descriptions of the perils of whistle blowing are painfully accurate.
As as an on-line college instructor, each semester I encounter plagiarism, and despite my university's "honor code," first offensives for even extensive plagiarism are handled lightly. Crisis on Campus is a must read for all teachers and administrators of higher education. At the very least, it will prompt a review of institutional policies for detecting, handling, and detering plagiarism.
To Dr. DeCoo, Merci beaucoup.

It is important to be a critical thinker. There is no reason to accept any truth without first verifying it for yourself.
If you are scared to question your beliefs - do you really believe them at all? I enjoyed this book quite a bit. It is one

Kate Ellis has given us a memoir that takes on race, class, gender, neocolonialism...The book moves effortlessly between the
personal and psychological on the one hand, the political and historical on the other. Ellis's open, critical, and self-critical
view invites us to join her as she explores the issues of her life--her struggle to create a female self in a world that represses
women, her efforts to build a cross-cultural marriage in a world that polices the borders. I loved the portraits of the different
worlds she's inhabited--the bohemian dance world of 1960s New York; Columbia University during the 1968 student uprising;
the aristocratic Canadian home she grew up in; the Nigerian world of artists and tourists that she visits first as a traveler,
then as a wife. Ellis' memoir often reads as effortlessly as fiction--but it is always grounded in a relentless honesty about
the difficulties as well as the thrills of crossing borders.

In this quick read, Applebee suggests that when considering curriculum, educators think about the role of conversation. Without
a need for real, deep, meaningful conversation around unanswered intriguing questions, curriculum is dead. All too frequently
curriculum rests in a set of standards, benchmarks and already answered questions which are asked to the learner. If the
questions already have answers why ask them? This book asks the fundamental question, how do we design learning contexts
in which learners are invited into the conversations that are taking place between experts in any field of study. When we
invite students to wrestle with these questions we are including them in authentic learning experiences because they, like
the experts must engage in the struggle to find a solution to an unanswered question. What could be more inspirational?
