My son is a 13 year old tennis player that's moving up the rankings ladder by playing alot of matches and practice. With that comes many different injuries. This book has given him the information he needs and has helped him learn the exercises that will make him a stronger player and "hopefully" keep him injury free. He has taken a tremendous interest in "Tennis Injury Handbook". Anything that keeps him reading and playing is great in my eyes!

Very good reference on the subject

If you are interested in this book, there is a good probability you are a pretty good player of middle age. In your youth your body felt invulnerable. You could play all day long injure free. Now, with a full life and little exercise during the working week you are facing an onslaught of tennis injuries. This is the fate of zillions of former high school and college players.

The title of the book alone reminds one how tasking tennis is on aging joints. You won't find similar books related to surfing, swimming , or biking. All these sports are associated with very smooth motions absent of any shock on the joints. But, tennis is just the opposite.

The book serves as an encyclopedia of all the injuries you could potentially face playing tennis. The author being an M.D. specializing in sports medicine does an excellent job in imparting information about diagnostic, prevention, and treatment for each one of them. Explanations of exercises are very clear associated with precise drawings that leaves no doubt about what you should be doing.

I am just in the midst of nursing an Achilles tendon and plantar fasciitis. The author has provided me all the info I need to treat these conditions. I am doing the related exercises. And, I am already feeling much better. In probably just a few weeks, I should be able to get back on the courts reasonably safely.

For your own sake, I hope you don't need this book. But, if you do don't hesitate getting it. I think it is excellent in imparting information on sport medicine that your typical general practitioner won't know.

This is a general book that attempts to cover all types of tennis ailments in about 180 pages. Needless to say, if you have a specific problem you'll find it wanting since it will devote only a few pages to your problem.

That said it does do a good job of providing general information and provides excercises to help condition and prevent future injuries. The description of some of the exercises are not too clear and it doesn't really go into specifics on how to do the excercises properly.

If we think about our own and others' experiences of gender identity, whether we are more gender-typical adults (cis-gendered) or transgender, then we know that one's sense of gender is not a decision and gender non-conformity is not a frivolous choice. Rather, gender is a component of all of our most innate selves. Research supports this view. Most parents do not expect to have a transgender, gender variant, or gender fluid child, so what to do when our young children show us consistently that their gender identities do not align with typical expectations following from their biological sex? Or when older children come out and tell their families that their gender identities are not what has been assumed? This unparalleled book by an author with deep experience educating families and institutions on gender identity, especially in children, and another with academic experience in LGBT studies, now makes available to many more families, as well as professionals working with children (who will certainly encounter some gender non-conformers!), very practical advice in the imperative work of supporting these kids, as well as much needed affirmation in doing so. Topics covered include, importantly: sensitivity, schools, extended family, faith communities, and the medical and legal systems. With nuanced understanding, this balanced book does not "diagnose" kids as simply transgender or not, but rather explores the normal and wide range of gender variation in children and how we can support all of them to be their truest and healthiest selves. The many voices (in direct quotes) of gender non-conforming children, their families, and various professionals make the reading all the more compelling. This book should be mandatory reading for the world, but especially for any professionals working with children, and families with children who fall outside current gender norms.

This book was recommended to me by an Aunt after we sent out an email letting our family and friends know that our daughter would now be living as our son. I can not tell you enough how many questions this book answered and how much comfort it gave me to know that my questions weren't unique they were common.
And when it came time for our son to attend school as his new self this book went along for the ride. I offered it to teachers, principles, and any other person who seemed to need more information and understanding. The best part was this book does not point a finger or try to change peoples religious or political views which I sometimes find pushes people away from excepting. Instead this book just gives the facts, it tells you the details of everything on what to expect, how to talk to doctors, and what the laws are for trans children. My favorite part was at the end when it gave letter examples that your local doctor could follow to hand out to schools and other areas where you might need one.
This book has become my guide and I reference it often.

This book is exactly what parents of gender nonconforming children have needed, and it's finally here! Stephanie Brill is one of the most knowledgeable people in the country about gender identity in children. This book is great for parents (and professionals) who are just starting to learn about this issue, as well as those with more experience. It is very thoughtful and incredibly helpful.

Stephanie Brill is a genius! She has empowered me to help my child authentically become who she is. My child now expresses herself, accepts herself, and proudly embraces who she truly is because of Brill and Pepper.

As a therapist myself, I see the overwhelming need for families and children that are going through similar issues to receive some of the valuable insights in this book. Brill is the Erik Erickson, of Developmental Stages and the Transgendered Child!

I hope others use these ideas, recommendations, and suggestions when coming into contact with any children/adolescents who may have questions regarding his/her gender identity in relation to who they are and where they belong in the world.

Dr. Chandler pulls it all together! As a practicing advanced practice nurse and educator, prospective students often ask what I need to do to gain entry into a nursing program. I no longer need to worry that I forgot to provide all the important details. Now, I refer them to this publication as it provides them with excellent advice and helpful hints. Moreover, they have a ready reference when they begin to pull information together for the application process and that all-important essay.

A Must Read

Dr. Chandler's book is a wonderful tool for prospective nursing students. With a wealth of information about the nursing profession, insider tips on the admissions process (including suggestions on how to make your application stand out!), and interesting anecdotes from nursing students and practicing nurses, it is a MUST read for anyone interested in nursing.

Nursing is a fascinating career that requires many competencies, and even though I have maintained an interest in the profession for some time now, I learned a great deal after reading this book. Dr. Chandler's examination of the nursing roles/functions provides a good synopsis of the skills and responsibilities required and utilized daily in the profession.

Personally, it has been difficult for me to relate my own skills and personal strengths directly to the profession because I lack work-related experience in the healthcare field. There is one entire chapter in the book dedicated to self-assessment, and as Dr. Chandler reveals, you must have a strong understanding of yourself in order to be an attractive, outstanding and successful nursing candidate.

An eye-opener

This book is an eye-opener on how to write an essay. In the past, I just pick up my pen and write and probably read through once or twice. This book shows the importance of making drafts, reading through a couple of times and even reading it to somebody. I usually take for granted the reference/letters of recommendation aspect of my application . Now I know better. I applied to a couple of nursing schools and was unsuccessful in getting in. The essay, and reference part of the book, contributed immensely towards getting me into my current nursing program and particularly prepared me for what lies ahead in my nursing career. I strongly recommend that prospective applicants read this book before applying to any nursing program and other related programs.

This is a fabulous book, technically competent, well-written, easy to read and well-organized. It comprehensively covers all the tech-weenie needs to know about clients, proxies, servers, HTTP, and a bunch more without drowning you in math or killing you softly with a gazillion irrelevant details. I found the last chapter, the "Research Perspectives," to be particularly up-to-date and useful. There is a ton of information about HTTP floating around out there. Figuratively speaking, Rexford and Krishnamurthy have taken as their input the coal and produced as their output this diamond.

You've built a B2C or B2B web service. You get great response time from your office, but there are times when your customers across the country report poor performance.

This book with help you understand the entire path between browser and web server and how Internet latency and intermediaries like Proxy servers add to transaction delay. This is the only source that I've seen that a) Defines HTTP 1.1 and b) describes the relationship between HTTP and the TCP/IP protocol stack, making recommendations on how to tune the stack to reduce the effect of latency.

You'll learn that many of TCP's flow control mechanisms were designed for FTP, Telnet and Rlogin and some default settings are not optimized, or even appropriate for HTTP.

Authors Connie Brown Glaser and Barbara Steinberg Smalley deftly combine solid reporting of facts, figures and poll results with insightful stories about women who have abandoned the corporate rat race. This concise look at a pivotal trend is not limited to women only, though they are its emphasis. The authors introduce high-powered executive women who seek more purpose, balance and fulfillment, and find it by taking less stressful positions, starting their own businesses or switching careers. Much of the story is told through the personal case histories of corporate strivers who decide to chuck it all and go home. Many of these pioneers asked, "What good is all this money when I have no time to enjoy it?" They got tired of being "corporate machines," sick of jeopardizing their health and their important relationships. While many employers now understand that satisfaction, purposefulness and appreciation can trump money, some ground still need to get broken here. We highly recommend this book to people at all levels in the work force because it will help you consider your destiny - even if you love the electricity of corporate life and would be bored to tears making gift baskets in your garage.

The authors have done an outstanding job by communicating to readers how to acheive fufilling, balanced life-styles. The stories are great lessons for women who are questioning the meaning of success. Is it how much money you make or how much time you have to relax and enjoy your family and friends?

This book provides inspiration for women who desire something more than a title and a six-figure salary. Success is defined many different ways by the women featured in this book. The numerous examples of redefined success are refreshing and thought provoking.

I am a professional personnel who dove head first into being a stay at home mom - who misses the professional world, but knows she is in the right place w/kids right now, home - it can be a shocker. Even with all of the stay at home mom stress, it's worth it to me to make $0 and stay home with our kids. The biggest lesson I've learned these past 4 years is to take care of your mind, body and spirit (self-esteem). This book shows others (even non-moms) how they can regain balance in their lives by determining what they love to do and shifting their professional gears to a more fulfilling position. Excellent read!

It is command reading for everyone, woman and man alike. Give it to your colleagues and discuss the challenges. Glaser makes us stop and reflect on choices we all have. Congratulations to Connie Glaser and all of us will be helped with the right balance we choose. Her work advances our own thinking.

Glaser and Smalley are among the most influential of current business scholars because they think so clearly and write so well while discussing the most important issues. Perhaps you have already read their Swim with the Dolphins. If not, you are urged to do so. In this book, they focus on an especially timely subject: The importance of "soul" in the equation for "success." In recent years, I have examined the results of more than 30 "employee satisfaction" surveys and was surprised, frankly, by what were rated the highest attributes: feeling appreciated, being treated with respect, believing in the value of the work to be done, enjoying the work to be done, and trusting the organization by which one is employed. What about compensation? Depending upon the individual survey, it was ranked anywhere from ninth to thirteen in importance. For those who participated in the surveys and probably for most other workers, money is never enough and seldom most important. The authors ask all of the right questions but, to their credit, resist the temptation to advocate any ":right answers." That responsibility they entrust to each reader. Although this is another of recently published books which have a gender-specific frame-of-reference, almost everything the authors share can also be of substantial value to men...not only to understand much better their mothers, sisters, wives, daughters, business associates, etc. but, more to the point, to understand themselves much better.

Cox & Sheldon take a lot for granted - Their book is great if you're studying for the MCSE or have any kind of networking background but if you're new to group policy, domains and OUs and the like, then it's likely going to be a struggle to read. I gave the book 5 stars because eventually, through hands on, self-taught trial & error on my own system, I was able to master some of the basic security concepts. If you're a lazy n00b and you don't have any kind of initiative or a mentor, then don't waste your time or money with the book.

Can you imagine a book on Operating System Security actually being a good read? This one is just that!
As a SQL Database guy finishing up my MCSE 2000 with the "Win2K Security Design - 70-220" exam, I sought, and found, a resource to solidify and integrate all of the Win2K security concepts covered in earlier exams. I sought a book that was very readable, and I was willing to allow that, by itself, it need not be completely exhaustive as a MCSE exam #70-220 study guide.
Bottom Line: This book was a home run for me. My comfort level with concepts of IPSec, PKI, EFS, threat types, auditing and firewalls has risen remarkably. On the down side, the book is relatively basic and the fairly lengthy coverage of Active Directory, group policies, etc., may be overly ambitious for this book, and is probably better learned elsewhere in a dedicated AD book. In a larger sense, however, this book really delivered the goods, as specified above.

Now I need to identify another resource with which to complete my Security Design studies.
As a sidebar, I have found the first 75 pages of Coriolis' "Exam Cram: Win2K Security Design" to be so full of wordy fluff-speak as to abandon it.

An unapologetic and complete look at Windows 2000 security

I am a senior engineer for network security operations. I read the Windows 2000 Security Handbook (W2KSH) to learn how to advise clients on improving the survivability of their Windows 2000 platforms. Like its predecessor, Tom Sheldon's excellent "Windows NT Security Handbook," W2KSH delivers practical content in a digestable format. I recommend Windows 2000 system administrators read and heed this book.

Good operating system security books are thorough, educational, and honest; W2KSH is all three. The authors are not mindless Microsoft prophets -- consider this sample from page 501: "It seems that Microsoft just does not get it when it comes to the need for robust auditing/logging of services... the logging configurations are totally inadequate." To deal with these and other deficiencies, W2KSH provides installation, configuration, and deployment recommendations. This advice, on topics like Active Directory, user and group management, and file systems, equips system administrators to survive hostile network environments.

As an intrusion detector, I was most happy to read how the Microsoft security model operates, and what components present the greatest vulnerabilities. I appreciated explanations of system and discretionary access control lists, and how to effectively employ them. I learned Microsoft includes Web, FTP, SMTP, and NNTP features in Internet Information Service (IIS). I also became aware of best practices for secure deployment of a Microsoft infrastructure.

W2KSH has a few problems. Like Microsoft products, its "backwards compatibility" revealed weaknesses. For example, some text was lifted directly from Shelton's earlier book, but necessary background material was omitted (see pages 86, 88-90, 148). This issue was awkward but minor. I also did not leave the book with a strong understanding of the different types of groups in Windows 2000. Such complexity is not the authors' fault. They show that the OS' dozens of options leaves plenty of room for misconfiguration, leading to compromise.

If you're familiar with general security practices, skip Part I (TCP/IP, threats, countermeasures, and policies). I recommend the authors mention these topics briefly in the introduction and move the bulk to appendices. Start with Part II, and keep your highlighter handy. W2KSH gives balanced insight into the workings of Windows 2000, and helps system administrators and security personnel better understand the opportunities and liabilities of running this operating system.

The "Windows 2000 Security Handbook" is an excellent book! Not only is it a good book to learn the nitty-gritty details of Win2K OS and network security, but the first section of the book is a great overview of security in general (Win2k and non-Win2K). For someone who is just getting involved with Win2K security, the book is a must. It has both a good theoretical and practical focus; not only do you get the explanations of of the various Win2K security elements, but you get a step by step guide on how to configure each one. The book is also an excellent reference for those already experienced in Win2K. Very comprehensive and well organized.

I've read many books on Windows NT and Windows 2000 security. Most did not live up to my expectations. They were difficult to read and you needed a Computer Science/Engineering degree to understand them. In my opinion, this book is THE best book on Windows 2000 Security. Mr Cox and Mr Sheldon wrote a very easy to read, easy to understand, and most importantly, an easy to follow recipe for securing your Win2K systems. This book should be in every adminstrator's library. If you don't have this book, you deserve to be hacked! I teach system security, and this book is a valuable tool and resource, not just for me, but for my students. This is money well spent!...

It's been 15 years and Scott Adams shows now signs of slowing down or the ckind of burnout that caused Bill Watterson to retire from Calvin and Hobbes. Thank God! Because Dilbert remains the most consistently funny comic strip in the papers. A daily dose of wry, sarcastic wit that is daily bread to those of us toiling away in an office environment.

The title of this book says it all...who hasn't wanted to smack the person reviewing us upside the head and ask them what the hell were they thinking when they wrote it. Reviews, marketing, computers, stupid bosses...it's all to be read and mocked in Scott's latest collection.

It was beginning to look like Scott Adams would run out of material for Dilbert, but the corporate world just keeps spinning. Words.. is a new high level in corporate mayhem. From Dogbert the headhunter to the genius garbage man and of course Catbert the evil HR manager they are all here. We learn that "plundered" is now called "enhanced stock holder values." The pointy hair boss gets a body double for safety, and Dilbert invents a robot clone to double his visibility. It's another swipe at office management and the minions who toil our lives away in cubicles. Buy a 2nd copy and mail it to your pointy hair boss. Better yet, buy a 3rd copy and mail that one to your HR Catbert.

Dogbert's Tech Support
The Consultick
Dilbert's mood altering drugs

The new dress code which is barrels
My favorite comic which is the one where Wally researches Greek names for a new product

This is another very funny and spot-on book from Adams. Some of the characters like Ratbert and Dogbert don't appear as much, but Wally comes on strong and new characters are introduced like ConsulTick.

What's funny is the resonant note that Dilbert has struck with so much of corporate America. Having been an employee at a major Fortune 500 company for many years myself, I was convinced that Adams was talking about my company, and so did everyone else, although the resemblances at times could be almost eerie.

Adams's cartoons of the more absurd and ridiculous aspects of corporate culture (which at times seems to be about 99% of it) continue to provide much needed comic relief for hapless cubicle dwellers everywhere, and this is another funny book from Adams that shouldn't disappoint his fans.

It's more Dilbertine for the addicted like myself and allthough there are a couple of minuses to mention the level of hilarity stays high as always. And how could it not? The inspiration from the corporate world keeps coming through in tsunami waves.

While one of the most cult characters in the Dilbert series (Wally) gains even more of the spotlight other equally legendary characters like Ratbert but above all Dogbert himself keep getting lesser and lesser appearances. That's a pity actually as especially these two have offered unforgettable moments in the past. Another thing connected with these two fading somewhat is that we get fewer moments of Dilbert at home and more in the office. Tha creates somewhat of an imbalance which was not present in the initial installments of the series.

All in all though, this gets adequately compensated by Adam's invincible humor and the introduction of new characters who might have less of a lifespan in comparison to Ratbert and Dogbert but who provide for some freshness nevertheless.

Other than that it's Wally galore to the max. Wally has been the secret ace of this comic all along. This is cynicism at its very best and its most hardcore. The lines coming out of Wally's mouth are surreal.
The Dilbert series continues to be a classic.

This book makes a great gift for your writer friends. After all, you can't just keep buying them nice pens for Christmas.... I found this while looking for a gift--and ended up reading it before I gave it away, though I wanted to keep it and tear out the pages to post 'round my desk. Really funny, really true (the best kind of humor).

'Writer at Work' is a high quality, thoroughly wonderful collection of Richard Krzemien's unique cartoons about the writing life. From the superb renderings to the pithy punchlines, each cartoon is a work of art in its own right. The keen eye will note the bookshelf in each drawing with a message specific to the cartoon written on the book bindings - a bonus addition to the cartoons. Funny and poignant - these cartoons can be enjoyed by writers and non-writers alike.

I know lots of writers, and they're all depressed. They're constantly getting rejected, having their work chopped to pieces, and generally suffering from a lack of self esteem. This book makes them laugh out loud; the relief is palpable...someone who feels their pain and makes it funny. And you can look at it more than once, because of the detail in the pictures; you see things in the background that you miss the first time.

I laughed, I cried, [...], and that was for my own work. Finally, someone who understands the pain, yes the joy of putting words to paper. Helpful to any professional or student and, amazingly, the insights come at a price your therapist can't match.

Well thought out and clearly articulated...you feel at home with Laurie. There are two tapes. On her Change tape she offers useful information and exercises that help you to decide the changes you want to make and then 10 steps to help you carry them out. Her tape on Communication hit some hot buttons for us and were good reminders about style differences, and how we can appreciate that in others. We both have creative activities we do, so her Creativity tape ideas stimulated fresh ideas that that are a big help.

Ms. Sheppard's tape, The 3-C's is a wonderfully organized & clearly articulated journey through the maze of challenges "elephants in the road" we face in today's success driven world. The tape is easy to listen to and gets you to think & participate in an active way to deal with those things that block us in our pursuit of achievement. Personally, I have a huge library of tapes by the masters & books in every "self-help" sub category; Ms. Sheppard's tape is clearly a new classic. I highly recommend it!

10 Stars for Terry Frei's Broncos Memories

If you ever lived in Denver, loved the Broncos, stomped your feet until they hurt and the stadium swayed, sat in freezing weather through winless seasons, but never gave up hope...this is the read for you! Terry Frei nailed it. The 70's in Denver after graduating from CSU were amazing, and nothing was better than the Orange Crush. We all looked terrible in orange, but we wore it all and often. I still have some Crush t-shirts and wear them proudly down here in Cowboys country. All the memories of Elitch's (the old, real one), greyhound races, and more came flooding back in time. I have read the book twice from front to back and especially like the chapter about "where they are now." I guarantee you it's worth the money. Go Broncos!!!

I was 10 years old at the time and my family lived in the heart of Denver. Benton street was filled with kids growing up knowing only 1 thing. The Denver Broncos were for real and Craig Morton was the real deal. If you have had any exposer to the lure of Bronco-mania you have got to check out this book. As I was humming through the pages I could almost smell the smog and feel the hope of a Superbowl victory for our mighty underdog team. Looking back I do believe everything I owned was Orange and it's a fact that Orange Crush pop was invented in honor of the team. About every trip to the mall meant meeting another team member and it was nuts how accessible these athletes were.

...and this book has allowed me to re-live the memories in more detail than I ever had access to. It was a wonderful romp down memory lane and reminded me that as a young boy living in Denver was truly special. If your from Denver or have ever seen it on the map and like the Broncos this is a must read! Totally enjoyable and complete this book delivered. For me this nugget of time and how the authors captured it struck pure gold in the heart of a great city.

This a great book about the 1977 Denver Bronco's. The book gives a history of the season from training camp to the Super Bowl and profiles the players that made it all happen. It also provides information about what was going on in Denver during this time and how the town was caught up in Broncomania and the Orange crush defense.
There are some black and white photos in the middle of the book and there are stats at the end which summaries the season. The book gives a behind the scenes look at what happened in the 1977 season from the prospectives of the players and coaches. There is much detail including a nice description of the player revolt that let to John Ralston's firing and Red Miller's hiring.
At the end of the book there is a summary of each player that tells what they did after 1977 and where they are now. Overall, this a very well written book. If you are a football fan of the 1970's, or the Denver Bronco's in general, this is a must read.

When I first heard about Mr Frei's upcoming book and the subject, I knew I had to have it. I received the book for Christmas and couldn't put it down! I have been recommending it to friends and family alike.

This newest book is a must for Broncos fans everywhere! Reading this book took me back to '77 and the excitement that the Broncos generated across the entire state, but it's not just for those who lived through that glorious season. This book will give current Broncos, and football fans in general, a fascinating look at the moment the Broncos became a "big league" team and the City of Denver evolved into a "big league" city.

Having been a Broncos fan for years and years, I was captivated by the the manner in which Mr Frei wrote about the backgrounds and histories of the players and coaches of that team and then filled us in on what those players and coaches are doing with their lives today. He also provides an inside look at the sports scene in Denver as seen through his eyes as a young reporter.

Mr Frei helped me re-live the moment and also catch up with the lives of those players who gave Broncos fans thrills for years and years!

A definite read for football fans everywhere.

If you are a Denver Broncos fan, this is a very fun read, and if you lived in Denver in 1977, then you have to have this. It brought back so many memories of that time, and the special feeling of the city that year.

Highly recommended.
