A very good autobiography, infact the best I have ever read. Goes through his life in detail. From Aliquippa to Pitt to Dallas and Denver and all the mishaps and action that happened in these places. It also gives good growing up details and how it was like in family. A very exquisite book.

One of the all time great running backs in the NFL Tony Dorsett leaves nothing to the imagination as he describes the his life from childhood, to the University of Pittsburgh, to the Dallas Cowboys and the end of his career with the Denver Broncos. A must read to learn about all the difficulties of being in the spotlight. One of the best books I have read.

A Voice For a Baseball Wife

I have often wondered how other women handle the baseball life. I have moved three times in the past year and a half. I looked up as I was driving yesterday and couldn't remember which town I was in. Reading this book has calmed me. I gained energy just hearing the struggles the Hargroves have had to endure. Sharon is correct when she says you have to have a since of humor about it all. You have your good, your bad, and your hope. If you are a baseball wife or fan this book will open your eyes to the other side of the game.

The best book for the money, and I have read them all! Clearly explains MP3 and other aspects of digital music. Great CD, too.

I have read several books on MP3, and this is definitely the best for beginners. It explains all aspects of finding, playing, and creating MP3 files. While it is easy, it contains enough technical information for advanced users, as well.

The included CD is worth the price of the book, and is the best suite of MP3 programs and utilities I have seen!

Schnakenberg makes learning fun!

My daughter and I read together regularly. She, like myself is a Bulls' fan. We both missed Scottie during his absence from the sport in the 97-98 season after being injured. I was not surprised when she brought this book home for a book report. To my delight, I found that Mr. Schnakenberg writes for children without talking down to them. While she learned more about her favorite basketball player, I found the author engaging and insightful. I know how Scottie plays. After reading Mr. Schnakenberg's book, I now feel I know WHO Scottie IS. I'll be looking for more Schnakenberg. I suggest other parents do the same!

A sweeping HISTORICAL novel
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-11-30
Secret Players is clearly a sweeping HISTORICAL novel. Although the plot/characters (five women and four determined men) are held together through Buck Steele's life, Sako his Japanese enemy, and the Cass dynasty, it seems to me not fair to market it other than as a great slice of American life during the COLD WAR.
HISTORY makes these American characters pivotal, with the Japanese and other characters in the wings, always waiting for their cue! HISTORY eventually upstages all other elements. Of course it's rife with international intrigue.
But promoting it as "a literary novel" that 'carries the weight of history' isn't enough.
I thought immediately of Gone with the Wind, Giant, The Forsythe Saga and Gettysburg.
During my read, again and again I came across fascinating cultural/historical/economic stuff, a great slice of cultural life, again, during the COLD WAR .
And I found allusions--accurate and fascinating--and perceptions about, for instance, the Marshall Plan, incredibly interesting observations about post-war Japan, Japanese-Chinese relations, the Bilderburg group, depicted as "a new world order with a global agenda, dominated by Europeans!---(wasn't Buck Steele a member?).
And, as was my luck, various snapshots of Americana popped out, such as the possibly apocryphal tale of Edgar Bergen and the bartender who became Charlie McCarthy's prototype in the Saginaw Club. Wow! This is wonderful, rich CULTURAL stuff!
I know Secret Players will do well---but it needs to be marketed for what it is---otherwise it tends to come across as another Danielle Steele novel. Wish I'd had more time to expound.
Congratulations on a really super book.

Secret Players

A Review

Secret Players is a marvelous read. Mr. Nelson has crafted a superb thriller with global implications: politically, economically and militarily. The adage "write what interests you and write what you know" is very apparent in the author's telling of his story, a cat and mouse game start to finish. The novel is a jewel and an excellent source of history, economics and politics beginning with World War II to the present.
Secret Players is one of the finest examples of what Elizabeth George (Write Away!) calls the hourglass plot, where two sets of characters bear equal weight in the novel and two plot lines run separately like two parallel lines. Our curiosity is aroused. We wonder how and when we'll see the relationship between the two characters and the two plots: all the time we sense that we are heading toward a convergence.
After finishing the novel, you'll sit back impressed by the characters and unique plot and at the same time enriched with a retelling (lesson) of world history.
Congratulations, Mr. Nelson. A wonderful novel worthy of a large reading public.

Ideas for instructional approach
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-06-08
Now in an revised, updated, and expanded second edition, Serious Players In The Primary Classroom: Empowering Children Through Active Learning Experiences offers insight into the Selma Wassermann (Professor Emerita in the Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, Canada) ideas for instructional approach: "Play-Debrief-Replay". This is a method for structuring curriculum experiences so as to promote children's active learning in cooperative groups and fostering independent thinking. A theoretical framework for implementing teaching for thinking in primary classrooms is provided, along with updated references and a new chapter on moral dilemmas. Serious Players In The Primary Classroom is an impressive, "user friendly" contribution to primary classroom curriculum development and teaching strategies.

Children are natural learners-teach them with respect

Review Date: 2003-09-11
I've been a kindergarten teacher for thirteen years. I pride myself on teaching with research-based methods which, above all, honor the developmental levels of children and their amazing ability to construct knowledge through play. I believe a teacher's job is to facilitate this natural learning through carefully structured, inviting exploratory play experiences. This book was one of the most influential when I was studying to be a teacher...in fact, I still refer to it occasionally and lend it to new teachers. It is based on the idea that all people need personal empowerment, and that with it, conflicts and the need to control others diminish (children and adults alike). It also suggests that the creative force minimizes the destructive one, and offers many practical ways, across the curriculum and including classroom management, to teach with these concepts in mind. It deals with concerns such as, "Won't it be too noisy?" and "How will I cover the curriculum?" It utilizes the research of Dewey and Piaget and for each activity, lists Concepts, Learning Goals, Thinking Operations and Materials. There are suggestions for helping children to reflect on their observations and for challenging their thinking. We are encouraged to remember that children who cultivate the art of play are likely to develop self-initiating behaviors, capacity for risk-taking, and inventiveness which will serve them all their lives. A teacher is more than someone who follows a lesson plan. Learn the art of teaching with this fabulous book!

I first read this book when I was eleven years old. I read it twice that year, and I'd sometimes read passages from it to pump myself up before a basketball game. Living in Australia, and without the Internet, I didn't know much about the NBA, but this book taught me a great deal.
I'm re-reading it now, and I'm surprised at how much I am enjoying it. Shaq has come a long way since then, and reading his comments on how he saw things when he first came in is interesting and illumining. The tone is relaxed and chatty, and there are plenty of funny and insightful anecdotes. This book is a gem, and at less than a dollar (second-hand), it's a must read for any basketball fan.

Outstanding history of women's basketball!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-04-28
This is a comprehensive and well written history of women's basketball at all levels from high school, industrial, AAU, college, pro. Great stories from its stars of yesterday and today, with many quotes and personal glimpses from players and coaches from every level and many major teams. The authors clearly understand the significance of Title IX and its significance to every female scholar-athlete and attempt to convey its continued importance with repeated references to it.

Highly recommended for any fan of the game, and a MUST READ for young girls and women who want to appreciate the pioneers of the game they play.

A "Must Read" for Anyone Interested in Women's Basketball

Review Date: 2005-10-07
This is a carefully and well-written book that provides an excellent and thorough history of women's basketball. The book is a good blend of some of the unknown players/coaches/teams and the usual suspects. While the book focuses on basketball, the authors do a great job of placing the sport into the social/political dynamic of the times. They trace the continuing tension between women's expected roles and behaviors with the seemingly contradictory skills and attributes that athletic competence requires. They also don't flinch from discussing the presence of lesbians in and the impact of homophobia on the sport. I'm just an ordinary fan and enjoyed this book thoroughly. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in women's basketball.

Students today at LSU call the Pete Maravich Assembly Center the P-MAC. I can't stand to hear that. If they read this book, they might give the building the devotion it deserves. "Shooting the Pistol" is a clever name and the cover of this book and its design are also clever. I was expecting only pictures, but was amazed at the amount of copy that went along with the games corresponding to the photos. Pete is shown in all kinds of situations and the descriptions are amazing. This will make a great Father's Day gift.
